Editorial Review:

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has been wildly popular with children and adults for over 50 years. Children adore her because she understands them--and because her upside-down house is always filled with the smell of freshly baked cookies, and her backyard with buried treasure. Grownups love her because her magical common sense solutions to children's problems succeed when their own cajoling and yelling don't. For the child who refuses to bathe, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle recommends letting her be. Wait until the dirt on her body has accumulated to half an inch, then scatter radish seeds on her arms and head. When the plants start sprouting, the nonbather is guaranteed to change her mind about that bath.

Hilary Knight's (Eloise, Sunday Morning) delightful pictures provide lively, droll accompaniment to Betty MacDonald's refreshing stories. Whether Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is curing Answer-Backers or Slow-Eater-Tiny-Bite-Takers, her remedies always work like a charm. More than one parent over the years has surreptitiously turned to Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle when Dr. Spock failed to come through. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book for my two nephews, ages 5 and 7, because I had such wonderful, vivid memories of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series as a child(I am now 45!); I wanted them to experience it as well. I was an avid reader as a child(I still am)and was exposed to hundreds of titles and have many favorites that I read to my children and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle still stands out in the top 10 and I still get a smile on my face when I remember reading about the little girl that had radishes growing out of the caked on dirt on her arm because she refused to take a bath!

Editorial Review:

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has a trick up her sleeve

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle loves everyone, and everyone loves her right back. The children love her because she is lots of fun. Their parents love her because she can cure children of absolutely any bad habit. The treatment are unusual, but they work! Who better than a pig, for instance, to teach a piggy little boy table manners? And what better way to cure the rainy-day "waddle-I-do's" than hunt for a pirate treasure in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's upside-down house?

We love Mrs. PiggleWiggle 5 out of 5 stars.

I grew up reading Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, and she was my favorite. Now I am so excited to read these stories to my children. My oldest son is 4, and we just started reading them this week. He loves the characters and the cures. I love to listen to him talk about the various bad behaviors and then watch him as his brain ticks through the times he is whiny, bossy, etc.. I also love that these stories use big words-great for building vocabulary in a very natural way. At 4, he is only just old enough to be read these, so I anticipate many more happy years of enjoying Mrs. Piggle Wiggle together!

Full of laughs 4 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book very well. I think it takes you back to the original Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, in that the "cures" are reverse psychology or clear demonstrations, rather than "magical" powders and potions. Being with a loving, confident adult works wonders on the children in the stories. This is a good book, and it's fun to read aloud.

Editorial Review:

Ms. Piggle-Wiggle's left her upside-down town house and has moved to a farm in the country. With the help of her cows and pigs and horses, she's still curing girls and boys of their bad habits. So whatever the problem-from pet forgetter-itis to fraidycat-ness-the parents all exclaim, "Better call Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle!"

Charming and eternally wise 4 out of 5 stars.

I'm actually sorry to say that I preferred this to the first Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle book. Or maybe I just like the magical cures in some cases. Anywho, this is a delightful addition to the wonders of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and is ful of thoroughly entertaining and hilarious stories that gently nudge everyone (not just kids!) into recognizing not-so-good habits. It's sweet, friendly, and never condemns, though it will always bring a smile.

Maggie's meaningful review 3 out of 5 stars.

Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is a humorous book! Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's husband died and left her a trunk of magic cures for children's horrible habits. Parents in town often phone her about their children's bad habits. A few examples of terrible habits are slow poke, whisperer, and bully. For the bully, there are leadership pills, and for the whisperer, there are whisper sticks. They taste like candy, but you can only whisper after you eat one. For the slow poke you spray on their clothing. Will the cures work? " I recommend this book for young girls, because I think it's best suited for their maturity," I said.

Editorial Review:

The incomparable Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle loves children good or bad and never scolds but has positive cures for Answer-Backers, Never-Want-to-Go-to-Bedders, and other boys and girls with strange habits.`[Now] in paperback . . . for a new generation of children to enjoy.' —San Francisco Examiner Chronicle.

I loved reading the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books as a child, and I loved reading "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle", "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic", and "Hello, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle" again in this wonderful collection. The only problem is that "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Farm" is not included.

My family has enjoyed this book for a long time. We purchased this volume to share with a 13 year old friend who has been housebound and wheelchair bound for awhile, because we knew she would find a "ton" of good times with Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and her friends.

Editorial Review:

"Nancy and Plum" is a children's book written by the world famous author Betty McDonald, who wrote four popular "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle" children's books, and also the adult books, "The Egg & I", "Anybody Can Do Anything" and "Onion in the Stew".

"Nancy and Plum" was first published in 1952. It is a story Betty told her daughters, Joan and Anne, each night at bedtime, making it up as she went along. It is a delightful old fashioned Christmas story about two sisters, Nancy, 10 and Plum, 8, whose parents died in an accident. Their surviving relative is Uncle John, a wealthy bachelor with little patience or time for children. He puts the girls in Mrs. Monday's Boarding School in Heavenly Valley, persuaded by Mrs. Monday's promises and unctuous manner.

But Mrs. Monday is an ogre who pampers her niece, Maribelle, and persecutes the other girls in her custody.

Of the two sisters, Plum is the spunky one, leading Nancy on forays for food and initiating their running away. Plum like that more famous orphan, ,Annie, is brave, innovative and energetic.

There are lovely characters who are sympathetic and help the girls: Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, who find the girls on their farm and rescue them; Miss Waverly, the school teacher; Miss Appleby, the librarianl and Old Tom, the caretaker at the orphanage. For contrast their is Miss Gronk the Sunday school teacher, who shares the role of villianess with Mrs. Monday.

"Nancy and Plum" and "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle" were made into plays by the Seattle Children's Theater which were done exactly the way Betty would have wanted. They appealed to adults as well as children and are now being performed by other children's theaters throughout the United States.

more of same silly but wise fun 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

the book I read is the newest in a series 50+ yrs old, the last of the 4 originals was published in 1957; after the author died, her daughter found unpublished work & added to it to create another bk following the same format as the originals; Mrs Piggle Wiggle was married to a pirate who died; she lives in an upside down house w/5 pets & gets along great w/children; she seems like all she does is play, but she teaches lessons along the way w/magic "cures" for all kinds of problems parents have w/their kids; I think the bks appeal to children of multiple generations because kids are the central characters, there are silly names, animals, & issues common to children & parents, but w/the fun of magic touches & solutions; a key ingredient to the success of the "cures", aside from the magic, is the fact that Mrs Piggle-Wiggle has intimate knowledge of each child & teams w/parents to solve problems wo/the kids knowing she has a role; though the original bks were published in the 1940s & 1950s & set in what was typical for that mid 20th century era, the newest bk carries out the same idea successfully because the issues common to children & parents remain constant through multiple generations - over indulgence in media, bedtime struggles, won't brush teeth, insulting peers, picky eater, fear of failure/afraid to try new things, messy habits, not following through on tasks, etc; as a parent of an ADHD child, I could not help but clearly see that the 4th grade girl in the "never-finish" vignette suffers from ADHD; instead of "accomplishment powder" sprinkled on her hands & feet during sleep to help her stick to tasks till completion, medication might be in order!; fun to see parallels between real life elements & those in the latest bk, such as cereal & media star names; as a parent, it was frustrating to see parents in the bks so helpless as to how to address kids behavior issues, however, this is part of the story; you have to forget about the parents needing to use common sense & get firm holds of situations where kids are out of control, because this where Mrs Piggle-Wiggle comes in to save the day w/magic & behind the scenes child psychology in each scenario; the latest bk in the series was published by the original author's daughter 50 yrs after the last one by her mother; it is fitting that the title & ending vignette are celebrating the unknown birthday of the timeless central character; I read the newest bk to prepare me as a parent to oversee & aid my 3rd grade child in doing a fantasy book report; the target audience of the Piggle-Wiggle series is early elementary age children, however, there is definite appeal to adults/parents too; these would be excellent for parents & kids to read together, or for teachers to use to launch creative thinking/writing projects in class

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is the widow of a pirate, which at once sets her apart from ordinary people. Besides that, her house is always crawling with children. She likes little boys to dig for buried treasure in the garden. She likes little girls to wear her high heels for dress-up. She's always ready to stop and give a tea party, and she also has an attic truck full of valuable rocks with gold in them.

4 cassettes/5.5 hours. From the back cover: Ten-year-old Nancy and eight-year-old Plum live in Mrs. Monday's Boarding Home for Children. Uncle John sent them there six years ago, right after their parents died. He thinks they are enjoying delicious home-cooked food and tender loving care. Nancy and Plum must wear ragged dresses and stuff their worn out shoes with cardboard. But one Christmas they find a large empty box with their names on it. Do they dare confront cruel Mrs. Monday with their discovery?

I read this book at the Children's Story Hour in our town. This is the first Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle I read to the children. They were on the edge of their seats, laughing and participating! They begged me to bring more Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle stories. I have and they just as big a success!

My 3 year old loves this book! I really enjoyed Mrs. Piggle Wiggle stories as a child, and wanted to share them with my little one. However, it is hard to get her to pay attention without pictures. This book follows the orginal story closely, while adding pictures. I hope to see more books featuring Mrs. Piggle Wiggle for preschoolers in the future!

Editorial Review:

For years children and adults alike have delighted in Betty MacDonald's classic book about Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, who loves and understands all children and always knows just how to get rid of their bad habits. Now for the first time, the youngest readers can share Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's zany adventures in these picture books adapted from the original stories. Hubert Prentiss won't pick up his toys, but Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle knows that the only cure for him is to just let those toys pile up--until Hubert can't get out of his room anymore. Full color.
