Editorial Review:

Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan.

What's remarkable about the stories in this wonderful collection is the emotion James Marshall infuses into his understated, charming text and illustrations. Each brief tale is always humorous, never preachy, and his drawings--deceptively simple in appearance--are guaranteed to spark feelings of empathy, delight, and self-recognition. Maurice Sendak, in his foreword to this 25th anniversary compilation edition of all 35 stories, notes, "Those dear, ditzy, down-to-earth hippos bring serious pleasure to everybody, not only to children. They are time-capsule hippos who will always remind us of a paradise in publishing and--both seriously and comically--of the true, durable meaning of friendship under the best and worst conditions." I am going to be Miss Viola Swamp 5 out of 5 stars.

I told my second graders that if they don't start behaving that Miss Viola Swamp will be their teacher. They don't know who she is, so I am buying them the book to read ASAP. Hopefully, this will work! Thanks!

An old favorite 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was one I remembered my gradeschool teacher reading, so I bought it for my kids. They enjoyed it, but I think it makes a much larger impact when read in a school, to a class of kids. My 4 year old hasn't quite figured it out yet... but my kindergartener did. Solve the mystery and enjoy :)

Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

My nephew loves this book, reading it to him 10 times was not near enough, he never gets tired of it, oh its so nice to have a nephew at this age, how cute they are at 4. They are no longer "free" years old.

This book is one of my student's favorites. Enjoy her review below:

Miss Nelson is Missing

In Miss Nelson is Missing, Miss Nelson noticed that her children in her classroom were disrespectful. Then she goes away and a new teacher Miss Viola Swamp visits. They were all very frightened. They wished they hadn't been disrespectful now. They go some place to see if they know where she is. Miss Nelson is Missing is a scary story because Miss Viola Swamp is mysterious.

One reason she is mysterious is because of the way she dresses. For example "They can see she was a real witch." Also, because she wears dark make-up and dresses in black. It's scary because she looks goth.

Another reason is that she loaded them up with homework and it's not like regular teachers. For example on page 13 you can see them carrying homework that covers their heads. Also, you can see her with a homework list and she just got there. It is scary because she makes them hur their backs. I won't want ot be in her class.

A last reason is that she doesn't like playtime. For example she demanded them to sit on page 14 instead of story hour. They were sitting there for an hour. Also, she made them do math problems. It covered the entire board. It is scary because she doesn't like it but, she does it to them.

Miss Nelson is Missing is a frightening story because Miss Viola Swamp is mysterious. So if you want to read a book that is mysterious in 3 ways get off that couch and buy Miss Nelson is Missing.

Miss Nelson Is Back-The Timeless Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

~I read this book for the first time as a choice for storytelling in my forensics class, and as i developed the characters, voices, and knowledge of this book, the more i loved it! This book tells of school kids whose teacher leaves for a week to get her tonsils taken out, they think (on the assumption of an older kid) that they will get a mean horrid teacher named Viola Swamp!!! They end up getting the boring principal, eventually they get rid of him (I wont tell how) and they go out for fun~~ days galore. Its a hoot!~

Miss Nelson is Back 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Miss Nelson Is Back is written by James Marshall and Henry Allard, and was made for Miss Audrey Bruce.
This short story is about a group of nine children in classroom 209 with a teacher named Miss Nelson. When Miss Nelson is out for a week the children get a lesson taught to them that they will never forget.
Children will enjoy this book, because it is dealing with things that kids have to go through.
Children can learn a good lesson for school about not messing with a substitute teacher, because one time you might get a teacher that wont put up with any nonsense, and could punish them very bad by possibly putting them in detention or worse.

Editorial Review:

Miss Nelson is Back\nHarry Allard. When their teacher has to go away for a week, the kids in Room 207 plan to "really act up. this is an artful spoof that's not to be missed." - Booklist

As fabulous as the others 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I just couldn't bear to let a middle school kid give this book an "average customer review" of one star. This book is a side-splitter. Absolutely hysterical. My children were rolling on the floor. Also get Marshall's "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and "Red Riding Hood" for a set of some of the best retellings ever. Marshall's wry sense of humor makes him a favorite in our home school.

every child should read a least one book about the 3 pigs 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2.5 year old loves this book. Now he asks everyone what their house is made of.

Excellent version of a classic story 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This version of The Three Little Pigs is witty, engaging, and easy for younger listeners to follow. The illustrations are also fantastic; fans of James Marshall will not be disappointed. The only flaw to this book, in my mind, is the font. The font is fine for adult readers, but for novice readers just learning how to negotiate books on their own, it is a little distracting and unclear.

Editorial Review:

Marshall breathes fresh new life into this familiar favorite with funny new dialogue and exuberant cartoonlike illustrations. As Publishers Weekly raved, "There are fairy tales, and there are Marshall's tales. Readers can be forgiven for preferring his over all the rest."

I am eleven years old, and I love Miss Nelson Has a Field Day because it was funny and interesting. I liked it when Miss Viola Swamp called one boy, "Smarty". It made me laugh!! I think other kids should read this because it is a really good book. I think it is even better than the first two Miss Nelson books. All kids would love this book!!

Your kids will love the Miss Nelson series!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Miss Swamp reappears at the Horace B. Smedley School

The Horace B. Smedley School's football team is awful-and their big game with their major rival is on tap. Can anything be done to get the guys into shape in time for the game? Miss Nelson has a plan and, out of the blue, Miss Swamp is on the scene. But where is Miss Nelson??????

This is a truly delightful series that the whole family can enjoy. Good stories, great characters and the indomitable Miss Nelson all add up to great fun and great reading for kids.

Editorial Review:

The notorious Miss Swamp reappears at the Horace B. Smedley School, this time to shape up the football team and help them to win at least one game.

Editorial Review:

"See the piggy, / See the puddle, / See the muddy little puddle. / See the piggy in the middle / Of the muddy little puddle. / See her dawdle, see her diddle / In the muddy, muddy middle. / See her waddle, plump and little, / In the very merry middle." So begins Charlotte Pomerantz's irresistibly catchy verse story The Piggy in the Puddle. It's the classic "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" tale, as the little she-piggy's father, mother, and brother take turns exhorting her to exit the mud puddle in which she is frolicking, only to have her respond with a happy "Nope!" One by one, they give up and plunge into the puddle where they too discover the joys of the "squishy-squashy, mooshy-squooshy, oofy-poofy" mud.

James Marshall, creator of the George and Martha books, provides the perfect visual accompaniments. True to form, he depicts the admonishing father pig ("See her daddy, / Fuddy-duddy, fuddy-duddy, fuddy-duddy. / 'Don't you get all muddy, / Muddy muddy muddy muddy") as a large, fez-wearing, mustachio-sporting hog, standing on a box of soap. All you can see of the scolded little pig is the end of her snout and the word "Nope!" Young children will delight in the silly, repetitive verse of this Reading Rainbow Book--and of course the forbidden pleasures of being in the middle of a messy, messy muddle. (Excellent read-aloud for preschoolers, but perfect for early readers ages 4 and older) --Karin Snelson

"It's important to sample new products" (Martha) 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

George and Martha, two hippos who are best friends have amazing adventures in this easy to read, fun to experience set of short tales.

I think, no, I'm sure that my wife likes this book more than our children do, and our children love it. There are now several quotes from this book that have become common place at our home.

One is, "It's important to sample new products."

Try this book, you'll enjoy it thoroughly. The art work appears simple, but it's appropriately wonderful to the tone and stories of these two good friends.

5 stars, no question about it.

Interesting in a very very very very good way 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a terrific book for anybody, even though its marketed as a young children's book. I love this book, (and I'm 12) and my parents and older sister, (who pretends not to) do too. This book chronicles the stories of two best friends, who just so happen to be hippos. They relate moral messages, but in a far from preachy way. The illustrations are colorful and the two hippos are shown as cute and cuddly. (awwww.... they sell these really cute George and Martha dolls somewhere) In short this is a great book for anybody. So read it!

The stupids step out 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The stupid step, out Written by Harry Allad, was the funniest book I have ever read. Stanley Q Stupid had an idea. He called all stupid and said `we are stepping out's they took a bath. Petunia asked way there wasn't water. The reason was that with water they would get their clothes wet. They got in the car and went to their grandparents house. The grandpa didn't know who they were. `Where is grandma? Asked buster. In the closet, said grandpa. Then they left. They saw themselves in the mirror. `Don't stare at those people, kids " they said. Then they went to eat and then they went home. They got ready for bed and thanked god for a nice day liked it because it was funny and it had a kid's sense of humor like when the dog drove the car. I recommend this book to people who like to laugh and be silly. You should read this book it is great!

Don't see a problem... 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have found that The Stupids isn't necessarily a BAD book. It really points out to children the things that shouldn't be done, and any sensible person will know to tell their children not to go around calling people names just because of the book. I would also say that this book should be read for age groups of no younger than 2nd grade...so that they can understand the nature of the story and the context in which to take The Stupids. I hope this helps people. :)

Once there was a nice little girl nam--Oh wait a minute! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Whoever knew a day would come when Goldilocks', sweet little Goldilocks' squeaky clean image would be finally tarnished. I mean this chick stole and tresspassed and no one ever said a word. But in this James Marshall retelling, Goldilocks is potrayed as, well-a brat. When a new lady moves into town, she comments to a man about how sweet the little girl looks. He replies with, "That's what YOU think."

One morning our antagonist is asked by her mother to go buy some muffins in the next village, making Goldilocks promise not to take a shortcut, due to bears. But since the story is called "and the Three Bears," we know Goldilocks takes the shortcut. Meanwhile, the three bears are sitting down for breakfast-porridge, of course. But the porridge is too hot, so they go off on their three-seat bicycle. Minutes later Goldilocks finds herself at the bear's house, and the famed porridge tasting/bed sampling episode begins. I'm sure you know what happens afterwards(The bears come home, and so on...)

James Marshall(of the George and Martha books) has crafted a fresh new take on a famous fairy tale and succeded, with a Caldecott Honor Medal to boot.

As always, R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer.

Editorial Review:

What a sweet child, says a newcomer in town about Goldilocks. That's what you think, a neighbor replies. For Goldilocks is one of those naughty little girls who does exactly as she pleases--even if that means sampling the three bears' porridge, breaking Baby Bear's chair, and sleeping in his bed. James Marshall's offbeat and inventive telling of this familiar tale will enchant readers, young and old. A delightfully irreverent retelling of an old favorite is illustrated with delicious humor and contemporary touches. -- Booklist, starred review
