great for older siblings 5 out of 5 stars.

my son is 4 and we recently turned him on to the little critter series. he absolutely adores the whole line and now that we're expecting another baby he's gotten really excited and loves for us to read this book to him.

Pretty good 3 out of 5 stars.

Enjoyed the ideas for how big sibling can interact w/new baby.
My 2-yr old wasn't impressed though, and is still too physically rough to do the suggestions, which are more for an infant + big sibling than a newborn + 2 yr old.

Not the usual Little Critter book 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my 2-year-old before we brought baby #2 home from the hospital. It's a cute book, as all Little Critter books are, but it lacks the substance and creativity in the other books.

Editorial Review:

In this well-loved Little Critter picture book, our funny young hero has to get used to a new baby sister. What a problem. The baby doesn't pay attention when Little Critter reads to her. She cries when he makes silly faces. And she can't understand the jokes he tells. It's seems like an impossible task, but Little Critter finally figures out what you CAN do with a new baby -- and becomes a very good brother.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

My son is 8 yrs old and loves this series of books. The reading is fairly easy and the stories short so it keeps his interest. We read them as bed time stories and they are perfect. We own several of this series and we like them all.

Just My Dad and Me 4 out of 5 stars.

Our young son can't get enough of Mercer Mayer. He kept checking this book out week after week. We decided it was finally time to have a copy of our own in the home.

I love Mercer and his books and she saw a couple and went wild, great job and fast service.
Thank you

cute, in a strange, unexplainable way 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my daughter to give to my husband/her dad on Father's Day this year. She seems to like it, and enjoys when he reads it to her. It is a short, straightforward story that is easy for her to follow, and she likes to point out all the little spiders and grasshoppers lurking in the corners of every page.

I find the illustrations to be quite goofy, and not so easy of the eyes, as the characters are all so raw and odd looking - so it's appeal is sort of lost on me. But, it gets it's point across, showing a special time spent between a dad and his child, so I guess it serves it's purpose. : )

Editorial Review:

This well-loved Little Critter picture book has become a modern classic. It's the tale of a father-and-son camping trip filled with Little Critter's mistakes and good intentions. In spite of difficulties, however, the happy father and son manage to put up their tent, catch fish for dinner, and sleep beneath the stars. In spite of minimal text, the story is full and rich, with endearing illustrations from start to finish.

A great read but BEWARE. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful protrait of 19th century rural America, but people should be aware that it was written at a time when there was much more freedom of speech than we have today. Topics in the book include suicide, religious intolerance and fear of immigrants. There is a scene where the boys go skinny dipping and also one story concerns John mating his dog, so this book probably should not be brought to a public elementary school for fear it might offend someone. Also there are no African-Americans in the book, and while the book does portray Jews, Moromons, Protestants and Catholics coexisting, there are no Muslims in this book, so it is not very politically correct. Also the "I" word is used casually and no mention is made of the plight of native Americans, except to say that they are the only non-immigrants in America. Women are displayed in subservient roles, always cooking, cleaning and taking care of the sick, although all the boys are portrayed as having chores. [...]

Editorial Review:

The best con man in the Midwest is only ten years old. Tom, a.k.a., the Great Brain, is a silver-tongued genius with a knack for turning a profit. When the Jenkins boys get lost in Skeleton Cave, the Great Brain saves the day. Whether it’s saving the kids at school, or helping out Peg-leg Andy, or Basil, the new kid at school, the Great Brain always manages to come out on top—and line his pockets in the process.

Actually a sweet story 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My daughter likes these books and of course we had to get this one.

Little Critter is not happy because he can't have the Super Streak scooter. His mother tries to tell him there will be always things he can't have and he should appreciate what he has.

Of course a new kid moves into the biggest house. HH has a super streak! A maid, a cell phone, and just about anything he wants.

Little Critter sees all this when he is invited for a sleep over and thinks HH is the luckiest guy around.

His mother smiles and tells him to invite HH over. HH has a grand time playing with Little Sister, helping with chores, cooking and being quizzed by Little Critters grandparents.

When HH leaves; he tells Little Critter he is the luckiest guy around.

Confused Little Critter figures it out that having a family beats having possessions and no family.

The plot line could be considered trite but overall the story is handled well.

Editorial Review:

There's a new kid in town who has everything Little Critter wants -- a Super Streak scooter, his own cell phone, and even a limousine! But Little Critter soon realizes that he has something money cannot buy -- a family who loves and adores him.

cute and fun 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is cute because (as always) Little Critter tells the story, and what Little Critter says is not quite what Little Critter does - and the kids catch on. For example, he drops the hot dogs in the sand and cleans them off by rinsing them in the ocean. He thinks this is fine - Grandma does not look convinced. And his description of his own swimming abilities does not match the frightened Critter wearing a floaty and clinging to his Grandma in the picture.

This book always gets laughs from my 4 year old and she loves pointing out the things that aren't quite right.

Editorial Review:

Little Critter and his grandmother spend the day at the beach in this funny-and-true picture book about Mercer Mayer's popular character. Little Critter is a good helper, even at the beach. When his grandmother's hot dog falls in the sand, he washes it off in the ocean. He promises to blow up the inflatable seahorse but needs a little help in the end. The joys and mishaps of a special summer day with Grandma are all brightened by Little Critter's sunny disposition.

My Mom 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

When I was three or four years old, I saw this book in the window of a book store and asked my mother to buy it for me. Fifteen years later, the book still brings me incredible joy. Beyond the events in the story itself, it represents the connection between a child and his mother; she is analogous to the giving tree in the Shel Silverstein book. She created me, and with that creation, created the incredible world as I am now able to see it through the eyes and mind that she created. Despite any and all of one's faults (losing a train ticket, making a mess in the museum and the fancy restaurant), mother still lives with unconditional love and dedication to the child (smiling off the faults, buying more train tickets, eating a hot dog from a vendor instead of the fancy restaurant). A wonderful book, truly makes one appreciate the world and its female creator.

Editorial Review:

Mercer Mayer's popular Little Critter enjoys a special day in the city with his mother. Little Critter means well, but he gets himself in trouble all along the way. His mother is oh so patient when Critter loses the train tickets, picks up a dinosaur egg in the natural history museum, and misbehaves at lunch. In spite of his difficulties, Little Critter falls asleep happily on the train going home, exhausted from the big outing with his mother.

Excellent Children's series! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Little Critter is not having a great day but by the end of the book it becomes better for him. These are great read-along books for your budding readers. I have at least two whole sets of this series as my children plan to pass them onto their children to read.

For a 3-year-old or a 20-year-old 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my grandnephew that is 3 years old and has a very quick little temper. My son who is now 20 grew up with Mercer Mayer books and he enjoyed reading this short story too. The next thing I knew I was looking through boxes for all of his old books from childhood. Mercer Mayer clicks with kids.

Editorial Review:

Mercer Mayer's very popular Little Critter stars in a picture book about feeling angry. With minimal text and funny illustrations to spell out every new situation, the book shows the Critter family saying no to everything Little Critter wants to do. He can't keep frogs in the tub. He can't help paint the house. Finally, mad at the world, Little Critter announces he will run away. When pals come by and ask him to come and play baseball, our young hero's mood quickly changes. He grabs his bat and heads off for the game, telling himself he can run away another day if he is still so mad.

One of my favorite Little Critters! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

And we have a lot of them :) They're short, they're funny, they're topical, and they're cheap.

Little Critter in this one keeps improving his nighttime routine by playing make-believe. And his dad, patient man, plays along with his make believe while moving Little Critter along to the next stage to sleep.

Eventually, it goes too far and his parents just put him in bed - but they still tuck him in nicely.

Very realistic, and very funny.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend 5 out of 5 stars.

Little Critter and mouse return.

Little Critter is a cowboy who can lasso anything. Dad says "It's time for the cowboy to come inside and get ready for bed." Indoors; Little Critter, without his cowboy hat, boots, vest neckerchief and guns, sports a paper 'admiral's hat.' On the floor, his soldiers, tanks and mouse with a cannon look forward to their orders. "It's time for the general to take a bath."

An irritable Little Critter clothed in his 'jammies', toting his Bunny and none too anxious for bed is heading for the stairs on the cover of this Mercer Mayer work. Mouse is found sitting on the bottom tread. Just inside the cover on the title page we find another view, Little Critter is just as grumpy, however, the jammies are dragging on the floor behind Little Critter, stalwart mouse tramps at the side of buddy.

And so it goes, with his rocket in hand, Little Critter is a space cadet. Dad appears, and he carries the little space cadet to the bathroom where mouse is diving into a bubble filled tub. Before long; Little Critter is a sea monster doing violence to his bathtub ship. A slightly damp mouse is clinging to the ship when Dad appears holding LC's bath robe.

Snacktime finds Little Critter in the kitchen, peanut butter sandwich in one hand, chocolate chip cookie in the other. Mouse enjoys his cookie, surrounded by a horde of 'zoo animals' needing to be fed.

"Feeding time is over. Here are the zookeeper's pajamas."

Super Critter flies over the town, the train engineer is pursued by bandits. Once again Little Critter's patient dad reappears, little pajamas in hand, and a neckerchief masking his face.

"The bandit chief has caught you so put on your pajamas."

And, in a flash, a race car driver just speeds away.

A stern faced dad holds those pajamas, LC looks as though he may at last be bound for bed.

"I'm a bunny hopping around my garden."

Dad says, "Just go to bed!"

Protesting to the end, LC, quilt pulled up to his chin protests, "But I'm a bunny and bunnies don't sleep in a bed."

And the last page shows where a tired Little Critter bunny sleeps with his mouse buddy snoozing on his tummy.

I will admit, I read the Little Critter books a lot when my own children were little boys and again in my K - 1 classrooms in California. Because I love them as much as those children, I kept the books when I left teaching, perhaps forever, when husband and I moved away from California over a decade ago.

It wasn't long before I realized, 'you can take the teacher out of the class, but you cannot take the class out of the teacher,' or something like that. Every fall as the new school term rolled around the same old tug began. How hard, I wondered, will it be to turn a California Life Credential into one that will allow me to teach in Oklahoma... very hard I was told. So, filled with some trepidation I checked out the Oklahoma School site, downloaded the application and sent off my money order, found a position, and began teaching.

"You will hate it." I was told. "Kids today are a lot different."

I wondered whether to take Mercer Mayer with me to my classroom. These young, worldly wise, computer game playing kids may want something with a lot more jazz.

Yeah, right.

Little Critter, his family, Mouse et al are preferred as often as ever they were for 'free time reading,' for 'I'm the leader and I want this book read today,' and for anytime we have a little free time and choice is given as what to do.

"Read Little Critter to us." Is heard often and L O U D, in Mrs. Martin's first grade class.

The first graders in my class all giggle, talk about younger siblings or cousins doing precisely as does Little Critter when trying to prolong bed time. And, with sidelong glances they divulge that they too make use of countless of the maneuverings as well.

Mercer Mayer is a writer/illustrator who truly recognizes the psyche of young children. He presents child pleasing images adding to a most child pleasing read. Together that was an unconquerable combination twenty years ago, and it remains so today.

Permanent favorite Just Go To Bed is a must have for the pleasure reading shelf of little folks ages 2 - 6 and 7. Older kids may well sneak a peek when they think the grown ups are not watching. My former 4th graders, now 5th grade grown ups take pleasure in reading Mercer Mayer to 'the little kids.'

Happy to recommend Just Go To Bed for the classroom library, school, home school and public library catalogs.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

Editorial Review:

One of the classic Little Critter picture book titles by Mercer Mayer, this simple story shows our preschool hero resisting his father's efforts to get him ready for bed. By the end of the book Little Critter's understanding father has finally succeeded in moving his energetic, imaginative son through bathtime and pyjamatime into sleeptime.

So Much to Do --- Anytime for a Snowman? 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's a fun, snowy day at Little Critter's place and a day off from school means lots of time for snow fun. Little Critter wants to build a snowman, but finds himself being asked to do just about everything else instead. Little Sister wants to have a snowball fight, his friends want to go skating and sleeding --- will there be any time to build a snowman?

This is a great picture book that captures the fun of a snowy day. The illustrations are brightly colored with pleasing color choices such as deep textured blues and pinks. Various animal characters in the scenes such as birds and mice add plenty of visual interest.

Just a Snowman by Mercer Mayer 5 out of 5 stars.
