This is one of my favorites by Mercer Mayer. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I teach preschool aged children and we use this story when talking about fears. When I read it I start in a whispered tone, and when she sees the "something" in the atic I yell at the same time she does. The children jump a mile and laugh like mad. We then take a good look at the "something" and the girl. We all belive the "something" is more scard than the girl. I recomend this and any of Mayer's Little Critter books to any one with children.

Mercer Mayer knows how kids think. but more importantly he knows how to help them use imagination to deal with real porblems. New places are scary but if you face them head on you can tie them up and show them who is boss. Just remember to keep an eye on your teddy bear.
Wonderfully illustrated with all the little Mayer touches.

A wonderful kids book with rich and humorous illustrations. 5 out of 5 stars.

The story of Frog's adventures and mis-adventures in the park are told with subtle and humorous illustrations. Toddlers, pre-schoolers and even beginning readers will smile and laugh at the encounters between Frog and other park visitors.

Frog on his own 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a wordless picture book that involves an adventure of a frog and a boy. Mercer Mayer has several wordless picture books in this series and my favorite is Frog Goes to Dinner. I particularily like these for use in a writing station. I am a second grade teacher and I have relunctant writers and using wordless picture books allows me to get them to write. Students can start out short and then expand on their stories by adding adjectives and adverbs. It also helps me to assess vocabulary of my students. I use these books to have students "read" to me so they can understand and practice fluency. Delightful books!

Editorial Review:

Following the re-release of the first three books in this beloved series, here are the final three classic wordless tales in attractive, low-priced hardcover editions. A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog, the first book in this series, launched Mercer Mayer's distinguished career over twenty-five years ago, and also helped to create the wordless picture book genre. Full of warmhearted mischief and play, the books express the humorous trials and tribulations of friendship and the joy of summertime discovery. Readers will want to collect the entire set.

AWFUL!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I work in a Pediatric Dental practice. I ordered this book for my son and for his class, my niece and nephews. I threw them all away b/c they show the needle, which NEVER happens and is one way to get your child to be afraid of going to the dentist. In the end, Little Critter gets a lollipop for being so good, and granted the jar in the background says "Sugar Free", preschool aged kids cannot read. I was very disappointed b/c I love Little Critter, but not a good idea to get your child excited about going to the dentist.

just going to the dentist 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very cute book that is great for little kids getting ready to go to the dentist for the first time. Some of the terms used are a little out of date but, this is an overall great book for little ones.

Editorial Review:

Mercer Mayer's very popular Little Critter is on his way to the dentist. It's a thorough check-up, complete with dental x-rays. When Dr. Ghum insists on filling a cavity, Little Critter goes through it bravely. The visit is painless to the reader because of Little Critter's funny, honest way of look at things -- including the world of dentistry.

Should Be Way More Famous Than It Is 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a near perfect example of what a children's book shouold be. In this day and age, when celebrities write children's books because they are easy, Mercer Mayer shows that it's a talent in and of itself. The story, language, and structure are top notch, and the illustrations are wonderful.
My uncle kept this book in a box for years (it had long since fallen apart, but he couldn't find another copy, and his kids couldn't bear to part with it), and then the man I married had a hardback copy all his own, and I got to read the whole story for the first time. Even at 25, let me tell you, I was exicited.
It was my husband's favorite, and now both my kids love it.
On a side note, there is another benefit to this book: the human characters, who are all African American, look like accurate representations of real Black people. So many children's books make non-white characters look odd: either characture-like, or like Black Barbie- white features but different skin tone.
Not so with this story. Liza Lou in particular is a wonderful example of an Afrocentric standard of beauty, being very cute with natural hair and relatively dark skin.

Editorial Review:

With her quick thinking Liza Lou manages to outwit all the haunts, gobblygooks, witches, and devils in the Yeller Belly Swamp.

Just Mt Friend And Me 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Just My Friend And Me was a great book. It told you how you would play with your friend when he/she came over. It showed how to help your friend when he/she gets hurt. In someways once you have a friend come over you can't wait for them to leave so you can be a lone and do stuff you want to do and not have someone else want to do something different. Well, I hope this gives you a good idea of what this book is about. I hope all of the little children will enjoy this book. I know I did.

very cute 5 out of 5 stars.

This put a smile on my face --- and I'm over 30!!! The illustrations are colorful and funny and the story line and writing are very good.

Editorial Review:

The very popular Little Critter has a friend over to play and tries his best to be a good host. It's a long afternoon. After his friend damages Little Critter's bike by accident, leaves him in the tree house without a ladder, and doesn't help clean up his room, Little Critter decides that playing alone isn't always bad. Mercer Mayer's dry and gentle humor provides another funny-but-true picture-book treat.

My kids love this book 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

While this book does not say monsters are a figment of a child's imagination, it is a great kid's book. I have two boys and they both love it, despite one of them being frightened of virtually everything. Rather than telling kids monsters don't exist, which no monster-fearing kid will believe anyway, this book demonstrates how one boy found a way to overcome his fears and scare them off himself (he took karate lessons). Don't let the other reviewer scare you off...it's a good book that will not give a kid nightmares, even those who are fearful of monsters. It might however leave them begging for karate lessons.

Editorial Review:

What kid doesn’t suspect that there are monsters lurking under the bed, behind the shower curtain, in the basement, and even outside by the garbage cans? Mercer Mayer brilliantly and hilariously captures this classic childhood fear—and conquers it! Kids will cheer as the young hero of the story takes matters into his own hands by learning karate. Soon he has the monsters running scared! There’s a Nightmare in My Closet and its two terrific sequels are cherished favorites that have amused millions of readers, and continue selling year after year. Now Mercer Mayer has created a fresh new story and fabulous illustrations that will thrill and empower kids, a story that taps into a universal experience but with a super satisfying, karate twist!
