love these books 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

i grew up with these books. When i was a child my mom would take me to the library and i could not wait to get them. Every week i would come home and look at the pictures and tell my own stories and even come up with new adventures for the boy and his frog. i can not wait for my son and daughter to open them up and begin their imagination adventure. THe pictures are so cute the trouble that frog gets into with the boy is too funny. For children with great imaginations and love to read but can't yet on their own let the adventures begin.

Excellent wordless book 5 out of 5 stars.

This review is in response to a previous reviewer's comments that she did not realize that the book was wordless. She gave the impression that she was disappointed by receiving a wordless book, which her nephew cannot "read."

I agree that it should be more clear that this book is wordless, but I would encourage you not to discount it on this basis. The book is very funny, and wordless books help children develop linguistic and narrative skills. Have the child "read" the book to you, or his parents. You can also tell the story to him at exactly his linguistic level (or slightly above it), not with the one-size-fits-all vocabulary and syntax of other children's books. It would be great if you could notice where he struggles in his descriptions when reading the book, and then expand upon his attempts the next time you read it to him. If you give it a chance, you might like a wordless book.. and so might your nephew.

First came a boy and his dog.

Then they found a frog.

good information for children 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's Earth Day! (Little Critter)I am using this book with young children to increase awareness of ways they can help take care of the earth. It is both entertaining and informative. I recommend it for the classroom or for reading and discussing at home.

Could be better 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is nicely illustrated and I like the concept but the author misses some wonderful opportunities to teach more about what we can do to take care of the earth. One of the illustrations shows the main character standing in front of the refrigerator with the door wide open for what appears to be an extended period of time as he contemplates climate control. (seems counter intuitive} Then the main character makes a bunch of ice and uses an electric fan all day and into the night to blow air over the ice to cool the planet. Hmmmm... more waste of electricity. Would have been nice to include things we can do in our every day lives in our homes to reduce our carbon footprint like turning off lights, driving less, carpooling, changing light bulbs, solar power, etc etc I should note that the author does do a nice job of going over reduce, reuse, recylce, so it's not entirely bad, just misses the mark.

Editorial Review:

Little Critter is on a mission! After watching a film about climate changes at school, Little Critter decides to do his part to slow down global warming. With the help of his family and friends, Little Critter begins to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Together they learn about the importance of not wasting water or energy. Join Little Critter as he plants a tree, makes a climate control machine, and helps the polar bears.

Use with Occupations theme. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Little Critter's sister tells about what she plans to be when she grows up. She imagines herself being able to have a variety of occupations when she gets older. I teach ESL (English as a Second Language). I found this book when I teaching about occupations. All children seem to love Little Critter, in this case his sister, so they are motivated to want to read about the occupations mentioned in the book. The pictures are great, full of lots of clues about the words on the pages. There is a minimum of text which makes it easier for children who are just starting to read to manage. I like the book and would sure like to get more copies to use in Guided Reading groups.

My 2-1/2 Year Old LOVES this book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Right now my daughter has 5 books that she carries around with her at all times begging for us to read to her 24/7. One of those books is "When I Grow Up." We've must have read this book to her about 1,000 times. We line up her "favorite" books on the window sill next to the rocking chair and have her pick out a book one after the other. She always picks this book as the first book and last book to read. I make funny noises or comments for each of the occupations...ie: When she says she'll be a truck driver, I will pull my hand down and make a HONKING noise and then say, Get out of the way. My daughter just cracks up. And when she is a race car driver, I make speeding car noises and then a screaching noise to make the stopping sounds. She loves it and says, "You're funny mom." She LOVES it and I would recommend it to any toddler.

Editorial Review:

Little Critter’s sister dreams about all the wonderful things she’s going to do when she grows up. She imagines being a great ballet dancer, a world-famous doctor, a race-car driver, and more!

Lifetime's ambition to re-trace this great childhood read completed! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how excited I am - I'm fit to burst! I remember a creepy little book with fab drawings from when I was about 7ish (I'm now 34 years old!). I read it with my mother repeatedly in our local library when I was little. It even became a bit of a family tale as one of the characters says 'nothing to concern yourself with' and I used to say that to my mum in a joking way. Anyway, I could never remember what it was called and for about the past ten years have been trying to trace it (I've even paid money to net websites to try to trace it!). Today I looked up to top shelf of a bookshop and there it was! It's such a brilliant story and the illustrations are beautiful. I instantly bought two copies - one for my mum and one for our future child. What a brilliant book.

Editorial Review:

When Wizard Extraordinaire, Z. P. Alabasium, rents a room at Mrs. Begg's boarding house, things go mysteriously awry. First, a windstorm blows away the laundry. Then rain falls inside the parlor. Soon strange creatures float through the air, and lizards appear in the guests' beds. But Mrs. Beggs has a secret up her sleeve. Her great-aunt Celia was a witch and left behind a book of magic spells. Before things get any worse, Mrs. Beggs whips up some magic of her own and gets rid of her wizard problem! But watch out! Her new tenant--a dragon--looks to be even more trouble!

A bit about the history of this book . . . 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"Rats!
They fought the dogs, and killed the cats,
And bit the babies in the cradles,
And ate the cheeses out of the vats,
And licked the soup from the cook's own ladles,
Split open the kegs of salted sprats,
Made nests inside men's Sunday hats,
And even spoiled the women's chats,
By drowning their speaking
With shrieking and squeaking
In fifty different sharps and flats."

Robert Browning (1812-1889) first published his poem "The Pied Piper of Hamelin, A Child's Story" in 1842, based on an old German legend which may or may not have had some basis in historical fact. Browning was a serious poet; even in a poem filled with playful rhymes written specifically for children, he did not "dumb down" his language, but expected his readers to do a little work in understanding some of his "big words."

Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was one of the most famous and popular illustrators of children's literature in the latter part of the 19th Century. She had grown up loving Browning's poem, and shortly before his death she requested and received his permission to republish it accompanied by her own illustrations. This edition was initially published in 1888 under the imprint of George Routledge & Sons, which was at that same time in the process of splitting between Routledge and Frederick Warne. Starting in 1889 all subsequent editions carried the Warne imprint. The book continued to be popular, and Frederick Warne has issued reprints from time to time, well into the late 20th Century. This Warne edition is not in print at present, but used copies with various reprint dates are available from Amazon Marketplace sellers.

However, two different reprint editions are currently available, each with the complete original text and illustrations, and each presented with loving care from an eminently respectable publisher, in well-made but modestly priced editions. The Dover reprint (ISBN 0486296199) is full-size, in a sturdy paperback; the Alfred A Knopf/Borzoi/Everyman's Library reprint (ISBN 0679428127) is part of their Children's Classics series, in a very sturdily constructed hardcover with sewn sections that will not crack with use, but the page size is somewhat smaller. Both are beautiful books, and either is an excellent value.

As noted in the Editorial Reviews above, there have been other editions of "The Pied Piper," with different illustrations, and at least one seems to have been issued with the poem itself "retold" to make the language simpler; neither of those reviews is discussing this original version. Some readers may prefer one or another of these different versions. But anyone wanting to stick with Browning's original full text and Greenaway's original charming, muted and subtle illustrations should choose between the Dover or the Everyman's, or visit Amazon's Marketplace sellers to look for a copy of the Frederick Warne.

Editorial Review:

The Pied Piper pipes the village free of rats, and when the villagers refuse to pay him for the service he pipes away their children as well.

Little Critter Braves a Hospital Trip 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's 2005 and the "Little Critter" series is still going strong. This very new release (as of the writing of this review), part of the "New Adventures of Mercer Mayer's Little Critter" series is written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer and deals with Little Critter taking a trip to the hospital following a sports injury.

Little Critter is playing soccer. He scores the tie-breaking, winning goal, but hurts his leg. The call comes out for an ambulance and Little Critter is taken to the hospital.

This is a great book that will show kids what a trip to the hospital is like and that it really isn't something to be too afraid of. The characters are anthropomrphic, but fairly representative of real-life. The illustrations are, as usual, detailed, with plenty of things to read and observe at the hospital that Little Critter visits.

This "Little Critter" book comes with five adhesive bandages, a sure hit with Little Critter's littlest fans.

Editorial Review:

When Little Critter breaks his leg in a soccer game, he has to make his first trip to the hospital. Follow brave Little Critter as he rides in an ambulance, meets the doctor, and gets his first X-ray and his first cast.

Very cute! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my five year old great niece, so I have not given it to her yet. I love the illustrations and think she will too!

Editorial Review:

During the holiday season, many of us can be caught humming along to the catchy and dearly loved Christmas carol "The Little Drummer Boy." Now Mercer Mayer revisits this tale of the first Christmas with a wonderfully endearing twist. In a quaint woodland setting that bustles with animals and activity, the timid little drummer mouse plays his acorn drum wherever he goes. Then, one night, a bright star leads him to a stable. To the mouse’s amazement, Mary invites him to play his drum for the new king. Children will relish the moment when the little drummer mouse realizes that no matter how small he is, he is a part of this exciting event.

Mercer Mayer’s glowing and friendly artwork brings enormous charisma to this cozy version of the Nativity, and parents will appreciate this retelling that makes the meaning of Christmas accessible to little ones.
