Just because you *say* you're brave (or not) 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Spoiler alert: So many apparently gullible readers have reviewed this poem, that I'm going to tell you the entire plot. If you want to be surprised, then just move on to the next review.

(1) Belinda and three other pets *say* that they're very brave. Custard the Dragon *says* that he'd rather live some place safe. Based on what they *say* about themselves, the four "brave" characters tease the one "cowardly" character.

(2) When a pirate breaks into the house, the four "brave" characters instantly turn tail and run away. Cowardly Custard, however, stands his ground during the attack and ends up eating the pirate.

(3) Once the danger is past, all the so-called brave characters come back and thank Custard.

(4) Ultimately, however -- and this is more like the real world than a fairy tale -- Belinda and the "brave" pets go back to their habit of saying that they're really brave, and Custard goes back to saying that he'd really rather live in a nice safe place.

This poem is an interesting bit of commentary on our own willful blindness to our faults, our narcissistic dependence on erroneous self-talk, and one of our stupider working definitions of bravery.

This book is an excellent opportunity for you to talk to your kids about the difference between what people *say* and how they behave. Who's really the brave character after all? Is it always safe to trust a person's self-description? Is there anything wrong with Custard preferring security to danger? If you were there, would you want to tease Custard, or to tell that self-deceived Belinda to put a sock in it? If you saw someone picking on another person on the playground just because they're different, then should you be ganging up with the Belindas of the world, or sticking up for the Custards?

If you're at all familiar with the parable of the two sons in the vineyard (see Matthew 21:31's "Which of the two did his father's will?" question), then you won't have any trouble figuring out the difference between Belinda's brave words and Custard's brave actions. This poem may be beyond the ken of a two year old, but it shouldn't have been so confusing for so many adult reviewers. Just repeat after me: "Actions speak louder than words," and "Do not believe everything you hear."

Editorial Review:

Do you remember brave Belinda and her "realio, trulio, little pet dragon"? This Ogden Nash classic has been a favorite of children for more than 60 years and until recently was unavailable in a picture-book version. Artist Lynn Munsinger has rejuvenated the poem with her chuckle-inducing illustrations of no-nonsense Belinda and the cowardly green and purple dragon Custard. Belinda was a brave role model for young girls back when females weren't encouraged to stand up for themselves, and Custard's hidden reserve of strength has no doubt inspired children for several generations. Hooked on Custard? The next adventure unfolds in Custard the Dragon and the Wicked Knight, which followed this popular picture book. (Ages 3 to 8)

I don't read fiction very often, but I do pull this old book off the shelf and read it from time to time. I've owned this book ever since I was in the fourth grade, and I've read it too many times to count. It is a great little fiction book to read. Fun story, and so simple. A perfect "murder mystery" for young children.

Warning: Spoiler ahead.

The first time I read it I was sad to see Chester had apparently died, but then his crashing entrance into the closing chapters of the story is just fantastic... and funny!

Editorial Review:

Not a great place to visit, and you wouldn't want to live there

The Monroes have gone on vacation, leaving Harold and Chester at Chateau Bow-Wow -- not exactly a four-star hotel. On the animals' very first night there, the silence is pierced by a peculiar wake-up call -- an unearthly howl that makes Chester observe that the place should be called Howliday Inn.

But the mysterious cries in the night (Chester is convinced there are werewolves afoot) are just the beginning of the frightening goings-on. Soon animals start disappearing, and there are whispers of murder. Is checkout time at Chateau Bow-Wow going to come earlier than Harold and Chester anticipated?

I enjoy giving this book to 1st time Grandparents. It is good for both the Grandmother and Grandfather. My husband and I have enjoyed reading this to our two grandsons. With the bright pictures and animal characters, it keeps their attention and they seemed to enjoy every minute of it.

A friend showed me her copy of this book and I had to have one. I ended up giving it to first-time grandparents at a baby shower, and had to get another copy for myself.
I like the sentiment, the wording is cute, and the illustrations are adorable. I also love that it has what grandmas do best on one side, and what grandpas do best on the other, that was a nice surprise.

OK 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was going to be awesome, but I was a little disappointed. The first 15 pages or so are about what uncles do best, then the last 15 are about what aunts do best. Some of the activities that aunts/uncles do best are very similar and they are very stereotypical. For instance, the aunts are best at shopping with their nieces and the uncles are best at building. Wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, but it was OK. I'd recommend a book that was a little less stereotypical.

Editorial Review:

Aunts can do lots of things, like take you on rides at the amusement park, tell silly jokes, and help you pick out new shoes at the mall. There are so many things that aunts do, but what do they do best? You'll find out in this delightful celebration of the everyday things that aunts do best.

Uncles can do lots of things, like win prizes for you at the amusement park, play the piano with you, and help you draw. There are so many things that uncles can do, but what do they do best? You'll find out in this delightful celebration of the everyday things that uncles do best.

Great Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son got this book when it first came out, and we still have fun with it...even though he is now 17. It's a game I play with my children, can they say "underwear" 10 times without laughing...and usually they can't! I recently purchased this book for my neice and nephews, so they too can enjoy the fun!

I had this book when I was a little kid. My mom would read the book to my younger brother and I and we would laugh so much. Unfortunately we lost our house and all our belongings to a fire. The only thing that I really missed that got lost in the fire was my book. I'm now 23 years old and I still remember it. I was very happy to find the original hardcover print here and I order it.

Editorial Review:

"Just a'struttin' and a'prancin' and bedecked to beat the band in heart-splattered drawers comes Bismark the Buffalo--but only after a remarkable metamorphosis . . . Munsinger's zany pen-and-ink perky-colored illustrations are a perfect foil for the text. . . . A great read-aloud choice."--Booklist.

INCOMPLETE text; all images not included in board book edition. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

After reading this board book edition and then comparing the board book to the paper edition that has been much loved, I verified that the current board book edition is incomplete. Thus, I would recommend purchasing the paperback edition as the board book edition stops short and is not fulfilling in its prose. This incomplete board book printed edition is especially irritating when reading to intelligent children who have memorized the complete story and expect that the adult regurgitate it completely.

Editorial Review:

That's how this monstrous adventure begins. What follows is a hilarious romp through the house as a young boy tries to control his naughty but loveable guests, whose high jinks get wilder as the numbers get higher. Here's a rambunctious story, full of mischief and fun, that's sure to have young children giggling - and counting! This board book format is perfect for little hands.

Editorial Review:

Friendship comes in many flavors in the launch of a charming new series by a bestselling author and illustrator team!

Laura Numeroff, Nate Evans, and Lynn Munsinger bring readers a fun new group of sweet friends.

Just as jellybeans are different colors and flavors, each character in this heartwarming friendship story has a personality and pizzazz that young readers will love.

Emily loves to dance and can’t wait to meet the other girls in her class, who are sure to be just like her. But instead she meets Nicole, a tomboy who would rather be playing soccer; Bitsy, who loves arts and crafts; and Anna, a shy bookworm who has no interest at all in dancing. Realizing that they have to work together to make their dance recital a success, the girls learn to love each other’s differences and strengths as they band together and name their group the Jellybeans!

The latest picture book by beloved bestselling authors Laura Numeroff and Nate Evans is as sweet as sugar and features four adorable characters that all children will relate to. With joyful illustrations by Lynn Munsinger that dance off the page, The Jellybeans and the Big Dance will inspire readers to dance, prance, and boogie-woogie to the beat of their own drum.

Double Love and Challenging Parental Stereotypes! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This volume is two books in one, but with different illustrations built around identical texts (except one version talks about "mommies" while the other one talks about "daddies"). One cover has the mommies while the other cover has the daddies. The two texts and covers are printed upside down from one another. I've never seen a book quite like it. Just when you think that it's merely cute, you begin to notice subtle differences. The sex roles are mixed among the parents, and the illustrations mix it up even more. Mommies are messier than in the usual expectation in some cases, while daddies are neater than the usual expectation in other cases. The illustrations feature warm, funny anthropomorphic animals that will have you and your child giggling. The book will encourage much more involvement for both parents with your youngster. I recommend this book as a gift from a child for either mother's day or father's day.

The mommies' version begins with bears while the daddies' has hippos. I think the mommies got the advantage on that one. " . . . can teach you how to ride a bicycle, make a snowman with you, and bake a delicious cake for your birthday." The daddies' cake is much nicer though. Maybe the daddies did okay. What do you think?

The mommies' version goes on to use pigs. Hmmm. " . . . can help you make a garden grow, give you a piggyback ride, and take care of you when you're sick." But daddies are goats. I'm not sure either parent was advantaged here.

The mommies pick up as mice. That one had me laughing. " . . . can watch the sun set with you, sew the loose button on your teddy bear, and hold you when you're feeling sad." The daddies are foxes. I roared when I saw that.

In the next section, mommies are elephants. " . . . can take you trick-or-treating, help you give the dog a bath, and play in the park with your rollarblades." Daddies are rabbits. Mommies have the weight edge here.

In the final section, mommies become . . . porcupines. " . . . can read you a bed time story, tuck you in, and kiss you good-night." "But best of all, . . . can give you lots and lots of love!" Guess what daddies are? Crocodiles! Pretty sharp, eh?

However you decide to have fun with this book, it should add a whole new meaning to parenting in your household. Whether you are a mommy or a daddy, I suspect this book will give you the chance to do more things with your children. That's a great gift!

After you finish the book, you might ask your child to discuss what animals other people remind her or him of. You can extend the humor in that way, and also get many interesting insights into how you child sees and thinks about others.

Erase parental stereotypes with a big dose of laughter!

Before you buy Bugs!... 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book. It's gross and charmingly off-beat, just as the other reviewers claim. It also rhymes and makes a good out-loud read. And it is very, very outlandishly funny.

However, we also have David T. Greenberg's book Snakes! and it is just as appealingly gross and much funnier. Plus, the rhymes work a bit better for out loud reading. If you are only getting one of his books, I'd go for Snakes!

But before you buy, a quick warning! Neither this book or the Snakes! book are for kids who take things literally or who are easily frightened. I'd only recommend them for children who really "get" puns, word plays and jokes. It is the perfect book for older kids who still love to have books read out loud to them.

3 1/2 A Mostly Unimaginative Outing 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Popular author Laura Numeroff ("If You Give a Mouse a Cookie") and teams with the prolific Lynn Munsinger in this cute book about a dog who follows her brother to the library, but doesn't like to read. Henry drags his clearly unhappy sister, Beatrice to the library, where he needs to finish a paper. Beatrice refuses Henry's suggestion to read; instead, she just wants to watch him work, and she pours herself and her saccharine smile all over the increasingly frustrated Henry. Beatrice follows Henry for three straight days, until Henry has had enough. The reader may have had enough of Beatrice as well, for the humor of her unvarying, cloying smile is stale after awhile.

On the third day, Henry sees a library poster announcing a book reading that afternoon. Henry encourages his sister to attend, but Beatrice says, "I don't want to." Henry comes back with, "Too bad!" While waiting for the reading to begin, a dog introduces herself to Beatrice: "'Hello. My name is Wanda,' said the girl in the next chair. `This is the second time I've heard this story.'" "'Big deal!'" said Beatrice.

However (surprise, surprise), the book reading is a big hit. The librarian reads about Albert Mouse and his new roller skates, and Beatrice, who likes to roller skate, begins to show interest and even smile. Like Albert, she had once roller-skated in the house, and she listens and laughs and even looks over the book after the reading. When Henry comes to take her home, she replies, "I don't want to," hugging the book with her eyes closed dreamily and a big smile on her face.

The warm and welcoming story may encourage kids who have reservations about libraries or reading. Munsinger clearly depicts Beatrice's emotions, but she relies too heavily on Beatrice's somewhat comical expressions. The book's thin plot is fairly predictable. The pictures are too static and the colors are not very imaginative or exciting. Actually, Henry seems the more interesting of the two dogs, and the best scenes are those in which the brother interacts with his sister.

Editorial Review:

"Beatrice’s expressions are priceless. . . . This charming tale emphasizes the importance of finding the right book for the right reader." —- SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL

Beatrice doesn’t like books, and she doesn’t like tagging along with her brother to the library. She doesn’t want to get books from the shelf. She doesn’t want to let Henry work. And she certainly doesn’t want to sit in a room full of kids during story hour. Is there anything that could possibly change her mind?
