Survival of the fittest (i.e. person with the largest ears) 5 out of 5 stars.

Shhh! Don't make so much noise. I don't want you to scare it off. What I am holding in my hand, at this very moment, is something so rare and precious that I'm afraid to make any sudden movements for fear of startling it. What we are witnessing is the very rarely sighted Phyllis Reynolds Naylor stand alone children's book. It's not part of a series or the first in a great long line of "Roxie" books. No sir. This here's an only once-in-a-lifetime glimpsed... what's that? You want to point out that Ms. Naylor has produced AT LEAST twenty-four stand alone novels for kids in her lifetime? Oh fine. Be like that. I was trying to make a point about how many series titles Naylor has produced since she began writing (six series with forty-four books in total by my count). It's amazing she has time to eat, let alone come out with anything of quality. I guess that's the most striking thing about Ms. Naylor. Some authors who shall remain nameless (unless you e-mail me, and then I'll spill everything) write tons of books and their quality goes down. Ms. Naylor writes tons of books and if anything they get more and more original and enjoyable. "Roxie and the Hooligans" is just the latest example.

"Roxie Warbler was neither fat nor thin, short nor tall, pretty nor plain, smart nor stupid". Her ears, on the other hand, were extraordinary. Large and lovely, they unfortunately attract attention from the wrong sort of people. Hooligan-type people. For you see, at Roxie's school are four nasty bullies (or hooligans) that like nothing better than to tease poor Roxie whenever they get the chance. And as intolerable as such a situation might be, it's made all the worse when the hooligans and Roxie accidentally wind up on an abandoned island when an attempt to glue underwear to Roxie's head goes awry. Now our heroine is trapped with the four people she fears the most on an island where there are murderous cutthroats who are perfectly prepared to kill ALL the kids if they can get their hands on them. Roxie hasn't any food or any water, but she does have one thing. A cool head and lots of knowledge from the book, "Lord Thistlebottom's Book of Pitfalls and How To Survive Them". Everything is up to her.

There's a certain level of readership that gets ignored time and time again by publishers and authors alike. In my library system they're called Young Readers. They're the kids who have progressed to chapter books, but they still need simple words, pictures, and large fonts to help them through their reading. Books for this group exist, but they aren't always that ... um ... good. Lots of series books like "The Chronicles of Droon" or "A to Z Mysteries" fall under this definition. So you can imagine how happy I was to find "Roxie" not only a delightful read, but a rather thoughtful one as well. Characters begin as stereotypes (Roxie excluded) and then grow small souls for themselves through their sufferings. The book also has the amusing idea of having Roxie repeat advice taken from Lord Thistlebottom's book when she has the need. If I were to summarize this book, I might call it the practical application of all those how-to-survive-a-crocodile type books that adults seem so enamored of.

Now as a children's librarian I often get requests from concerned parents asking me to recommend books for their children that talk about dealing with bullies. This, obviously, would not be the first book to leap into anyone's head. Be that as it may, it's a great anti-bully statement. Naylor acknowledges right up front that for those kids that don't conform to the rigid sameness of their peers, they are bound to wind up bullied in some way at some time. The hooligans, however, are given their humanity when they constantly find themselves relying on their earful companion. Accompanied by amusing illustrations by artist Alexandra Boiger (of the recent smash hit picture book title, "While Mama Had a Small Little Chat) the book is pure enjoyment through and through. For any kid that likes adventure, cutthroats, and kids surviving on their own, this is a great read. And you know what? If Naylor wants to make this a series and add another chapter to Roxie's adventures, I don't think I'd mind one bit. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Do not panic.

Lord Thistlebottom's Book of Pitfalls and How to Survive Them has taught Roxie Warbler how to handle all sorts of situations. If Roxie's ever lost in the desert, or buried in an avalanche, or caught in a dust storm, she knows just what to do. But Lord Thistlebottom has no advice to help Roxie deal with Helvetia's Hooligans, the meanest band of bullies in school.

Then Roxie finds herself stranded on a deserted island with not only the Hooligans but also a pair of crooks on the lam, and her survival skills may just save the day -- and turn the Hooligans into surprising allies.

CERTAINLY NOT JUST FOR KIDS. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is one of those works I classify as a "universal cross-over." By that I mean that while it was written for the young boy or girl, it can nevertheless be read and enjoyed by older folks just as well, and indeed, after talking to quite a number of my reading friends, it is!

This is the story of an eleven year old boy living in rural West Virginia, a small beagle, a not so nice man who has abuse the dog and a cast of very believable characters. The boy rescues the dog and the entire story is about the young mans quest to same and keep this likable pup.

The story plot though is only the tip of the iceberg in this case though. The true charm and strength of this tale is the author's writing ability. The entire story is told in first person, via the little boy and we see the world through his eyes and share his thoughts and his logic. I am not sure how an adult could nail the personality of a kid so well, but she certainly has. The relationship between the small boy and the small dog is a wonder and makes the read worth the small effort it takes.

Ms Naylor has also been able to capture the vernacular speech of this area perfectly. Having traveled through that area and spent considerable time there, it was like music to my ears. Our local accent and language use here in the Missouri Ozarks is quite similar so I always feel right at home and when I talk to people, I don't stand out like a sore thumb. Her description of life in that area is perfect from local customs and attitudes to her physical description of the area.

Quite a number of ethical problems are presented in this book; some quite simple, some quite complex. This is an excellent work to read with your child; not to your child, but with him or her. There is much to discuss here.

The author is also a master at character development and obviously knows people. There was not one character in this book that I have not met face to face, some almost on a daily bases. As I read, I felt like I actually knew the people and was instantly able to put a face to each of them. Even the "evil guy" in the story was portrayed perfectly. I personally know of at least six men right this day that could step into his shoes and fit perfectly.

This is a fast read and you really owe it to yourself to pick up a copy and enjoy a reading treat. While the movie was sort of nice, it simply was no where near the quality of the actual book. Very much recommend this one. There certainly are worse ways to spend a couple of hours! For the life of me I cannot think of a negative thing to say about this work.

The King of the Playground
By: Phyllis Renolds Naylor

This book can inspire little kids to stick up for themselves. It teaches little kids that a bad situation can always turn out good. A friend is always around the corner.

There are a lot of funny exaggerations.
On page 23 Sammy chases Kevin in a tank.

The illustrator did a good job of elaborating the colorful pictures.
On page 2 the author did a really good job of explaining his spider-man shirt and his horseshoe pants.

The writer really captured the roll of an elementary school bully.
On page 3 Sammy kicks Kevin off the monkey bars.

My opinion on this book is that it is a good lesson to stick up for yourself. There is always a friend out there for you. You just have to compromise a little bit and you will find someone.

Editorial Review:

"Kevin repeatedly faces the terrorist tactics of Sammy, the self-appointed king of the playground. . . . Kevin returns home each time to an encouraging conversation with his father, (who helps) Kevin use his wits in an imaginative showdown with Sammy. . . . Humorous and realistic."--The Horn Book. First in a series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"The Boys Start the War" is a hit in my small Catholic library. After the first girl returned the book, she asked for Book 2, "The Girls Get Even." I had acquired only the first one, waiting to see the reaction. She was so delighted that I bought the entire set. The rest has been popular history!
As with this series, let one student read and spread the word, then a reading frenzy follows!

In historical lore the Hatfields and the McCoys lived in West Virginia across a retaining wall on the river from each other. Bitter feuds ensued. One reason this story is so notorious is that the origin of the feud is buried in time. No one remembers, yet the war continued for generations. See Wikipedia for more information.

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor chose intriguing family names for the "war" in the book: The Hatfords and the Malloys. The setting for the book is West Virginia. The two families live across a loop in the river from each other. The two families are connected by a swinging bridge across the river. For a much shorter route to school, the Malloys must cross the bridge, going alongside Hatford property.

This is how the war starts: The former neighbors, the Bensons with five boys moved, leaving their house up for rent. The Malloys take it. The Hatford boys are overjoyed because they think a family with three boys are moving in. Perched on top of their house and carrying binoculars, the four boys eagerly await moving day. Instead of three boys, three girls get out of the new family's car.

The boys decide to leave dead animals on the Malloy side of the river to make them think the river is polluted and leave to go back where they came from. This is not the day of wimpy, prissy girls. The three Malloys have gumption. They create their own form of retaliation. The war has begun!

What Wally, the middle son and brains of the boy feuders, later concludes is that this will be a war of wit. The skirmishes are often humiliating to one or another of the two clans, even though humorous to the reader. I will say that pranks go into the school, each family house, the neighborhood, wherever they can plot a new embarrassment.

That's as much as I'm telling. One prank after the other. One-up-manship. Match queen. However, by novel's end, the reader grasps the tiniest gleam that the reason for the feud will be forgotten. Origin: To drive the girls back from whence they came.

Note: Except for the historical allusion, this series is simple entertainment, yet anything that gets reluctant readers to engage in a book is a winner. This series should appeal equally to girls and boys.

Excellent reading 5 out of 5 stars.

The Girls' Revenge is a really good book. I like the way Phyllis Reynolds Naylor can continue this series to the fourth book without having the excitement or comedy drag. I especially liked the fact that Peter keeps going over to the enemy camp, much to his brothers' anger and embarassment. I would recommend this book to any Phyllis Reynolds Naylor fan.

Editorial Review:

It's December and Christmas is coming, but Caroline Malloy and Wally Hatford aren't singing carols around the tree. Instead these sworn enemies must interview each other for the dreaded December class project. Caroline, as usual, has a trick up her sleeve that's sure to shock Wally in front of the entire class. That's just the first step in her gross-out Wally plan.

In the meantime, Wally and his brothers find a way to spy on the Malloy girls at home. The girls vow to get revenge on those sneaky Hatfords with a trap the boys won't soon forget. To make matters worse, Caroline and Wally are really in for it when the gross-out gifts meant for each other end up in the most unexpected places.

Overcoming Evil With Good 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great story, not only about a dog but about how people can change and good can overcome evil. It is the third of a series which really should be read in order starting with Shiloh. ( Ab 10 J.).then Shiloh Season - 2000 Kids' Picks. Marty decides to befriend Judd and help his other dogs too by putting up a fence so they don't have to be chained all the time and then Judd steps on his best hunting dog's paw while putting in a gate and dog bites his leg and won't let go. Judd kills dog and fells real bad. Judd ends up saving Shiloh after he jumps in the creek to save Marty's sister.

--Karen Arelttaz Zemek, author of "My Funny Dad, Harry"

Editorial Review:

DOES EVERYONE DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE?

Marty's parents think so -- even Judd Travers, whose history of drinking and violence keeps Marty from completely trusting that his beloved dog, Shiloh, will always be safe from Judd.

"Some people just seem to attract trouble," Marty's Ma says, and Judd attracts the sort of trouble that makes it hard to believe he's really changed. First, the police find the body of a man who'd fought with Judd. Then, a vicious attack forces Judd to kill one of his dogs. But just when it seems Judd will never be able to escape the shadow of his past, a dangerous accident gives him the chance to prove himself. Can Judd Travers actually become a hero?
