Editorial Review:

There's something very strange about the rats living under the rosebush at the Fitzgibbon farm. But Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with a sick child, is in dire straits and must turn to these exceptional creatures for assistance. Soon she finds herself flying on the back of a crow, slipping sleeping powder into a ferocious cat's dinner dish, and helping 108 brilliant, laboratory-enhanced rats escape to a utopian civilization of their own design, no longer to live "on the edge of somebody else's, like fleas on a dog's back."

This unusual novel, winner of the Newbery Medal (among a host of other accolades) snags the reader on page one and reels in steadily all the way through to the exhilarating conclusion. Robert O'Brien has created a small but complete world in which a mother's concern for her son overpowers her fear of all her natural enemies and allows her to make some extraordinary discoveries along the way. O'Brien's incredible tale, along with Zena Bernstein's appealing ink drawings, ensures that readers will never again look at alley rats and field mice in the same way. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Haunting 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I first read this, I was totally and deliciously creeped out. I already knew O'Brien had a talent for nabbing a bit of sci-fi and throwing it into an opposing world. It all winds up being utterly horrifying and I guess I can't help but like it.Instead, this time, of working with cute little forest animals NIHM-style, O'Brien takes on the apocalypse, a sleepy valley that has pretty much survived the end of humanity and is now ready to for a little Twilight Zone-ish last-man-on-earth excitement. This book is nothing if not creepy, with very real emotions and intelligent references to religion, science, and literature--all still at a teen level. The human thought process is fascinating to watch and I was unable to guess as where the story would lead. Definitely worth a read.

Editorial Review:

Is anyone out there?

Ann Burden is sixteen years old and completely alone. The world as she once knew it is gone, ravaged by a nuclear war that has taken everyone from her. For the past year, she has lived in a remote valley with no evidence of any other survivors.

But the smoke from a distant campfire shatters Ann's solitude. Someone else is still alive and making his way toward the valley. Who is this man? What does he want? Can he be trusted? Both excited and terrified, Ann soon realizes there may be worse things than being the last person on Earth.

A Fantastic Dark Fantasy Story 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I first this book when I was about 12, and it remains on my shelf to this day (I'm now 35.) I highly recommend it for kids who enjoy fantasy books. Yes, it's dark and has genuinely creepy moments in it--but I see no reason that should discourage young readers or their parents, as it's an extremely engaging tale of a little girl battling the forces of evil. Resourceful girl characters are in short supply in children's fantasy literature, so this shouldn't be passed over.

The issues raised in another review here (regarding the unhelpfulness of adult authority figures in the book, and Ellen's bad descision to accept a ride from a stranger) would be points well taken if this were a book for 5 year olds. However, any child old enough to read and appreciate this book should be well past the point of learning that policemen are generally good and that hitchhiking is unwise. Give kids some credit! And give them good books, like this one.

Editorial Review:

Ellen awakens one morning with a mysterious silver frown on the pillow beside her. What magic powers it possesses she has not yet discovered, but the sudden changes in her life are unmistakable: her house is burned down, her family has disappeared, and a man in a dark uniform is stalking her. Can Ellen ever find her family? Can she use the power of the silver crown to thwart the powers of darkness? What diabolical force hides inside the mysterious castle in the woods?

Mice and Rats 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"The Secret of Nimh" is an exciting fantasy that pulls you in. This book is full of twists and turns. Everything is so clear you'll feel like you're really, there- watching everything that happens. As you get farther, and farther into the book you get more and more attached.

Mrs. Frisby is worried about her youngest son Timothy. Moving day is coming, and with Timothy sick in bed with a pneumonia she can't move him. It seems like there is no hope, until Mrs. Frisby meets a crow named Jeramy. He tells her to see the Owl. The Owl tells her to go to the rats. Mrs. Frisby is puzzled but does as she is told. It turns out that the rats knew her husband, Johnathon Frisby. They decide to help her move the cinder block (her home) to safety. Everything seems to be going great until Mrs. Frisby has an unplesent visit with the farmer's son.

Mice, rats, Nimh, all it takes to make a great story by Robert C. O'Brien. You'll love the funny, likeable characters. You'll love reading this book, and as you learn more about the charaacters, the more you love the story.

Editorial Review:

Mrs. Frisby, a field mouse, asks the rats of NIMH to help move her family's home from the path of the farmer's plow.

Very good sequel 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a sequel to the excellent "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H." This second book is not written by the author the first, Robert C. O'Brien: this author is his daughter. Despite that, this is a very creditable sequel to the first book. Fortunately, the poor animated movie sequel to "The Rats of N.I.M.H." is *NOT* based on this book. Only minor inconsistencies exist with O'Brien's work. The book generates less of a sense of wonder and mystery, but is nevertheless highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed the first book. The third book in the series, "R-T, Margaret and the Rats of N.I.M.H." is not as enjoyable, and I only recommend it to die-hard fans of the Rats of N.I.M.H.

not in the same league as the original 3 out of 5 stars.

My kids and I enjoyed reading together, but doesn't measure up to the original.

A shadow of the original 1 out of 5 stars.

This entire book was weak, from the characters to the battle against the construction company. I've read better fanfiction than this collection of character archtypes, Racso the Mary Sue, and the stultification of the solid characters that made Mrs. Frisby so rich. The damn builders could have been replaced with any number of "bad companies out to maim and destroy" including NIMH.

Editorial Review:

Timothy Frisby, a field mouse, teams up with the adventurous young rat Racso as together they try to prevent the destruction of a secret community of rats that can read and write.
