This book should be read to every preschooler & by everyone! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The number of children being bit by dogs is astronomical. This could be drastically reduced, by showing children (& adults) the right way to approach a dog. A child's only experience may be with a friendly dog, or her own dog. Many dogs see an unknown child running up & reaching out at them as a threat and become fearful &/or aggressive. Both responses can cause a dog to bite. Dog bites and attacks can leave lasting physical and emotional scars on a child. Please, read this to your toddler, to your kindergarten class, to any child you are in contact with. Tell everyone you know, that dog bites can be significantly reduced, IF when we see a dog, we know to STOP, ASK the owner if you can pet their dog & only then approach the dog in a non-threatening way. This book is an awesome tool to intruct this information.

Editorial Review:

Children encounter dogs wherever they go: in the park, on the sidewalk, at their friends' homes. Sometimes it's love at first sight, on both sides—but not always. The right way for a child to approach a dog to ensure that the first connection is a complete success begins with this question to the owner: "May I pet your dog?" Using Harry the dachshund as a gentle guide, Stephanie Calmenson addresses this valuable yet overlooked topic with care and precision, and Jan Ormerod's warm illustrations portray a wide variety of breeds and personalities and depict situations that are realistic but never scary. Unique and straightforward, this is the essential guide to bringing children and dogs together—for kids and parents alike.

Beating to Our Own Drum! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my daughter in England as a surprise gift. From the moment we put it on, she loved it! Almost every day she asks for the "Bop Book" and I happily oblige. It's a wonderful book and CD to get your preschooler away from the t.v. and into some exercise!

Editorial Review:

Here comes a festival of brightly hued animals, and they all love to dance and sing! Better yet, a music CD is enclosed with this book, so kids can dance and sing along with the animals. The big ostrich dances with feathers that bounce . . . the silly snake slithers with a hiss and a wriggle . . . the monkeys bop with a jump and a jiggle . . . and even the elephant dances with big stomping feet. This funny picture book with its music compact disc is for kids who love to dance—and if there are any boys and girls out there who don't like to dance, this book will change their minds. They can jump and jiggle, jive and wriggle. Doing the Animal Bop is certain to make them laugh and giggle. Big, extra bright illustrations on every page come with a humorous, rhyming text, and the enclosed CD provides the music!

Wow! What fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is the most fun I've had with my kids in a while. It's a great story to get everybody together and upbeat, one the kids can even "play" in the car together. Be careful though, not a bedtime story!

A nice spin off on the If your happy & you know it song 5 out of 5 stars.

If you loved the " If your Happy and You Know It" song this is a really cute book that also helps children to hear rhyming words as well.

It starts out with a little girl who is happy and to show it claps her hands. Well, along come other animals and their idea of how they show they are happy. The dog swirls, twirls, whisks and wags it's tail, the elephant who has a very thin tail decides it's his/her ears that shows by flapping & flopping. Then there is the crocodiles that snip, snap, & clip their teeth, followed by 2 toucans clicking, clacking, snip & snap their beaks. The gorilla beats his chest, the kangaroo jumps, bumps, pings, pong and bongs around, the blue macaw screeches, shrieks, shrills, screams, sceeches and yells and the hyena giggles, chortles, cackles, chuckle and titers. And in the end the little girl says If I am Happy and I know It - I can do my own thing, that's right all the animals say together. It's a cute book that is bright illustrated. I am not sure where the other reviewer says this is not a night time book because there is really nothing scary unless it's the crocodiles... but they are not drawn mean looking.... in my eyes. A very cute book that has my daugther acting out the actions with her stuffed animals.

A beautiful, magical Christmas story! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a warm and wonderful Christmas story for animal lovers and children of all ages. The short, lovely story is magical and marvelous, and the illustrations are among the most beautiful I've ever seen.

Editorial Review:

It's Christmas Eve and it's cold outside. A lonely old donkey limps through the frozen grass, searching for food. To him, Christmas is just another day. Then suddenly he hears the sound of sleighbells and galloping hooves. Could this be Father Christmas? Ormerod's artwork is dazzling, with details enhanced by silver metallic ink. Full color.

Sylvie and Bonnie are sisters who love to dance, but Sylvie is too young for ballet school. One day, Sylvie follows Bonnie to class and can't help peeping her head in! Miss Trisha sees her. "Can you point your toes?" she asks.

With her sister's encouragement, Sylvie steps into the spotlight and proves herself a dedicated ballerina ready for lessons. Sylvie earns a spot in Miss Amy's ballet class, and Bonnie congratulates her with a present--her own leotard and tights!

Acclaimed author and illustrator Jan Ormerod pairs simple text with charming illustrations for a fun easy-to-read story.

realistically written and beautifully illustrated 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I checked this book out at the library not knowing the subject. The cover shows a small boy playing with his mouse, but the first page starts out with the boy waking up to find his mouse "asleep". Written in the first person (of the boy), this book is sensitive and realistic in how a parent might help a young child deal with the death of a pet. It relates the father's tenderness in talking with his son, who goes through the range of emotions, including denial, sadness and anger. The boy appears to be of the preschool age, and while he seems to understand the finality of death, he also wants his mousie friend to be warm, well fed, and entertained after they bury him. The words are comforting to read and the illustrations are simple and beautifully done.

My 3 yr old boys have not personally experienced the death of a pet, but they've asked to read it several times. Our next door neighbor's dog died this summer and relate the mouse and the dog. They are very aware of the fact that the mouse died and is gone to "mousie heaven" (their words, not the books). They ask questions and empathize with and comfort the boy. We personally have an older bunny and dog, so I will certainly have this book in mind when they pass on.

Editorial Review:

One morning a boy finds that his pet, Mousie, won't wake up. The truth is Mousie has died. At first the boy doesn't believe it. He gets very mad at Mousie for dying, and then he feels very sad. But talking about Mousie, burying Mousie in a special box, and saying good-bye helps this boy begin to feel better about the loss of his beloved pet.

Enchanting sequel 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

What a shame this delightful book is out of print - do try to get a copy if you can!

This is a sequel to 'Sunshine' by the same author. It is a picture book without any words, so the story can change slightly, be built with the words of your child and yourself. The small girl lives with her parents, has dinner, "helps" with the washing up, has a bath and gets ready for bed. Dad tucks her in and reads a book, then goes into the living room with Mum. The little girl, however, cannot settle to sleep, and there are a few things going "bump" in the night, and a need for a last minute glass of water!

The illustrations in this book are PERFECT. The expressions and physical attitudes, as well as the events are easily recognised by anyone with kids.

At time the sequences are like a comic strip - conveying small shifts in the narrative. This illustrator has observed young children I am sure....

This book was for a very long time a bedtime favourite with my son, from about age 2 on.

Editorial Review:

It's nighttime, and the little girl from the companion book Sunshine is now winding down her day: she eats her dinner, takes a bath, and says good-night to her dolls. Her dad reads her a bedtime story, but she's not quite ready to go to sleep - she gets up for a glass of water, a hug, a reading session with her mom, and then, when both of her parents fall asleep, she's ready for bed again. Kids love routines and will be able to see themselves in this simple, wordless illustrated story.

Editorial Review:

It's morning, and the first rays of sunlight shine into a little girl's bedroom, waking her up. She gets out of bed and matter-of-factly starts her day. This award-winning wordless picture book follows the girl as she goes about her morning routine and watches as her parents do the same. She eats cereal, climbs in bed with her parents who read the paper and drink coffee, brushes her teeth, gets dressed, and goes out the door ready for school. Preschool-age children will enjoy providing their own commentary and comparing their personal routine to hers.

Brilliant for Babies! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My 8 month old daughter loved this wonderful book and claimed it as her favourite. It features wonderfully illustrated images of babies of different races, all enjoying a game of peek-a-boo in which the reader can join in by pulling down the flaps to uncover a different smiling toddler on each page. Being an English mother of an Anglo-Chinese baby, I was delighted to find illustrations of Oriental babies in this book and I have enjoyed asking her 'Where's the Baby?' in Cantonese too! The best book I've purchased for her so far!

Editorial Review:

This oversize board book by a favorite illustrator, Jan Ormerod, is great fun to look at and provides plenty of things for baby to do, too. Baby's favorite game comes alive with exuberant tots peeping from behind bright flaps. On each spread, a baby hides his or her face with a bib, a teddy bear, a pair of mittens. When readers pull the flaps down, the baby peers out with a broad smile. And there, too, is the punch line that never fails to delight little ones: PEEK-A-BOO! Jan Ormerod captures the toddlers in her charming, uncluttered style, showing just enough of baby's world to make young readers feel right at home.
