Great Classic Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 3 year old son loves this book. When we go for a walk around the neighborhood, he wants to pretend that we are going on a "bear hunt" and we recite the book. Great book for imagination.

We love this book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is apparently a classic camp song - not one I ever heard growing up, though.

My nieces request this book a *minimum* of once a week (and usually, once they request it, they want me to read it over and over again to boot!), and we love it every time. Then they often want me to help them reenact the story - I'll be the bear, then they'll be the bear, then the teddy bear will be the bear....

If you're paying attention as you read it, you can even see the various members of the family change their mood as the story goes on and they get hit with various forms of minor disasters.

Editorial Review:

"We're going on a bear hunt. / We're going to catch a big one. / What a beautiful day! / We're not scared." So begins Michael Rosen's award-winning read-aloud romp We're Going on a Bear Hunt. In this lovely boxed gift edition illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, a small paperback version of the book is packaged with the softest, most fabulous little brown bear we've ever seen. Reenacting "Splash splosh! Splash splosh! Splash splosh!" across the river is much more fun with an actual bear on hand. (Ages 4 and older)

Here's one for the Wolves 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as a gift for the younger daughter of a friend. Since I had ordered Harry Potter for her sister, I wanted her to have something too. It turned out to be one terrific gift in many ways. As a parent and teacher, I would never give a book to a child without checking it first for suitability. I found the story delightful -- warmhearted and humorous. "And the moral of the story is . . . " even better than the original.
The best part for me was that the wolves, those so unfairly maligned family animals, are the Good Guys.
And oh yes, she loved it.

Editorial Review:

When it comes time for the three little wolves to go out into the world and build themselves a house, their mother warns them to beware the big bad pig. But the little wolves' increasingly sturdy dwellings are no match for the persistent porker, who has more up his sleeve than huffing and puffing. It takes a chance encounter with a flamingo pushing a wheelbarrow full of flowers to provide a surprising and satisfying solution to the little wolves' housing crisis.

Eugene Trivizas's hilarious text and Helen Oxenbury's enchanting watercolors have made this delightfully skewed version of the traditional tale a contemporary classic.

This book is one that gets your child excited for book time. If you get into it when you're reading it and act out the sounds, your child will to! It's a great story and my daughter walks around saying, "We're going on a bear hunt, we're going to catch a big one"....it's a favorite book that she asks for. The pop ups are great, too!

Great story! 5 out of 5 stars.

BORING!! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 14 people found this review helpful.

There is nothing sweet, charming, endearing or amusing about this book. Illustrations are nice and large. It's just dry and boring. Yes it is written for tiny ones and one cannot expect too much in such a short book written for a baby. Completely lacking in imagination, in my opinion, this book is blah. There is so much better out there. Don't waste your money.

not what I expected 3 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this to add to my son's sleepytime book collection. I thought it would be filled with babies sleeping, looking sleepy or getting ready for bed. WRONG. The only page ( and image) of sleepy babies is on the cover and the last page.

Elena loves this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Our sixteen-going-on-seventeen month old is in love with Helen Oxenbury's books. These are the ones she brings to us when she wants a quick reading fix. She knows and enjoys them, and it seems to me she even recognizes herself in the images of toddlers (even though they all seem to be boys).

Good book for under 18 months 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I would have liked this book for my son when he was younger, but made the mistake of buying it for him at age two. Though he was slightly amused by the ending "tickle, tickle" it is difficult to hold his attention. Also, since my child does like to spend time looking at pictures in books, it is difficult for him to hear the rhyme because they are spaced out on different pages.
Not for children older than two.

Oxenbury is the best! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great book for babies, great as a gift, too. Babies love the sing-songy verse and adorable pictures in this book and the other three in the series.

Laugh Every Time... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter LOVES this book! It's very simple and sweet, but it makes her laugh every time we read it. We often recite it from memory- just for a little giggle. The illustrations are great, multi-cultural representations of cute little babies. We have a stock of these books to give as gifts for all the new babies in our life!

Mesmerized! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is my 8 month old's favorite book. Everytime I read it to her, which is everyday for the past several months, she goes into a state of bliss. She loves the big, happy, bouncy multi-cultural babies and I always sing the words to her for added pleasure. Great choice for infants.

Captivating to a baby! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have all 4 of these Oxenbury books and both of my kids have been absolutely captivated by them. It is the only book that they will just sit and actively listen and follow from between 6-15 months. Watch their faces while another reads it to them and you will be amazed at how the respond to the simple, large pictures and rhymes. As an adult, I am attracted to more detailed and complex illustrations, but this is what a BABY likes! Any of her books are a perfect way to introduce you child to book reading.

Captivating for little ones 5 out of 5 stars.

We have all of Oxenburys books in this series (Clap Hands, Say Goodnight, All Fall Down & Tickle Tickle). We also have her Big Baby Book as well. My daughter is 13 months old and loves books, but the books she continually picks out and hands to me are the books in this series. She adores them. My husband and I have probably read these hundreds of times to her, and she is captivated by the art work and the rhyme. A definite must have for your little one!

My Baby's Got Rhythm--Fun and Realistic Toddler Play! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The talented and prolific Helen Oxen bury ("We're Going on a Bear Hunt," the "Tom and Pippa" series) is a master at board books as well as picture books aimed at a slightly older audience. Clap Hands is a large format board book (there should be more of these!) showing four adorably dressed youngsters at play and snack time. For once, we see kids as they really look: Wearing oversized hand-me-downs that show evidence of the kids' pulling and tugging at them, and generally flopping around.

"Clap Hands" has a joyful feeling, and somehow Oxenbury captures the spontaneity of baby and toddler play, and the conflicting demands of seemingly unlimited energy and inevitable fatigue. Our four kids dance, eat snacks play cardboard "horns" and pots-and- pans percussion, and give big hand waving smiles to Daddy and Mom.

Board books are so brief--eight pages here--that they're like short stories, the best ones pay attention to every word and detail. Oxenbury uncannily gets it all right, from the above-mentioned clothing, to the off-kilter movement, the mix of solo and cooperative play, and even the utensils and slices of fruit at snack. The uncluttered, large format pictures have a nice color balance, and the playful text reads easily ("Clap hands, dance and spin, open wide and pop it in...") One of several in Ms. Oxenbury's baby book series, this is just right for reading to either one listener or a group.

Great First Book(s) 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Our son received the boxed set of four tiny board books including "I Can", "I Touch", "I Hear" and "I See" as a gift when he was born. These were the first books we ever read to him and we started when he was just a few months old.

Being small board books, they were great for a first book because our son could hold them and even chew on them and really get interested in the idea of a book. He could hold one while we read another. Being simple picture books with a cute baby as the focus, the books seem to hold an infants attention and we had lots of opportunity for interaction. I talked a lot about what the baby was doing and feeling -- as well as the other objects on each page.

When our son started standing and walking, he started imitated the actions in "I Can." At 23 months, he still picks these books up and goes through them by himself from time to time. The books have gotten so much use that they are falling apart!

I'm online looking for the boxed set to give to friends with a newborn...

Editorial Review:

A long-awaited reissue of a classic board book for babies offers both humor and charm as it follows a child delighted by his ability to stretch, jump, and dance. For children under two.

TREVOR BROWN IS IN NO WAY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS BOOK, I AM A TREVOR BROWN FAN AND THOUGHT THIS BOOK MAY HAVE DRAWINGS OF HIS TO COMPLEMENT THE BOOK....WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! THE ONLY THING OF TREVOR BROWN IS THE COVER, THAT'S IT. THE REST OF THE BOOK IS A BOOK, NO PICTURES OR ANYTHING ELSE, JUST A STORY. DONT GET THIS BOOK THINKING THAT THIS IS TREVOR BROWN'S EDITION OF ALICE.

What does Trevor Brown have to do with Helen Oxenbury's edition? 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

There are three reviews to this edition that talk about Trevor Brown's contribution, including the cover, to this book. Surely these comments should have been attached to a different book. This book is illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, and there is no attribution anywhere, including the cover, that has to do with Trevor Brown.
By the way, the Oxenbury illustrations are typical of her style. Frankly, as a collector of Carrolliana, I find Oxenbury's illustrations to be far too precious to hold the interest of adults, but others might find them to be appropriate for a child. The edition is well printed, on good paper and with solid color.

Editorial Review:

Welcome back to the world of Helen Oxenbury’s Alice! An exuberant edition of the Lewis Carroll masterpiece, lavishly illustrated by one of the most beloved children’s book artists of our time.
