This was the book that initiated my love for reading. 4 out of 5 stars.

This was the book that initiated my love for reading. As a fourth grader, I was drawn to the title as well as to its apparent 'novel-like' format relative to the slimmer picture books that were on the lower grade shelves in the school library. For the first time, I found myself being pulled into a storyline, so absorbed by the mystery that unfolds that I couldn't put the book down. (I think that it took me two or three days to finish as a nine-year-old, and I found myself re-reading it until I could recite dialogue: "Home," shouted Jed. "Milk and Cookies," shouted Bill. Liza ran to the front door....) I also remember being impressed by how well the family got along, including the three sibling protagonists.

I highly recommend this book as a starter 'novel' for young children who are prone to becoming avid readers. Follow-up with the more complex Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew mysteries, the Chronicles of Narnia, Robertson's "Henry Reed" series, and M. L'Engles "Time Quartet" (A Wrinkle in Time.)

Editorial Review:

Three children are uneasy when they learn their parents have bought a reputedly haunted house.

The Ghosts of Cougar Island 5 out of 5 stars.

...Have you ever had a spooky summer break? Well, I'll tell you this, Liza, Jed, and Bill had one spooky break that could go in the record books. Three siblings go on a vacation to their grandparent's house on Pirate Island. Bill, Liza, and Jed find a little opening in some bushes near their grandparent's house, which leads them right up to a beach that shows Cougar Island. After asking their Gran and Grandpa, they realize a rich family once owned it and when they died out, legend says whoever trespasses on the land will be haunted for life. That makes the three even more eager to go and see if the legend is true. Locals of the Island say they see ghost lights at night on Cougar Island. When Jed, Liza, and Bill find out its true, they aren't as excited about going to the Island. Then one of the neighbors, Hermit Dan, is missing some of his stuff. And the newspaper says that they still can't find the thieves who stole from several banks in the area. Do you think Jed, Liza, and Bill will have the guts to go and find who this ghost thief is?
I think this fictional book is excellent because it has many problems that come together into one big plot. It keeps you reading because when the book gets kind of boring with one problem, another one jumps in. One thing I don't like about this book is that there is so much dialogue that it gets annoying.
This book is great for mystery lovers and scary ghost book lovers. Both boys and girls would like this book. I enjoy, "The Ghost of Cougar Island," and hopefully you will too.

An Educator's Recommendation 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an entertaining summer adventure theme. Great light reading for a summer program, this book could also be a good back to school discussion starter or writing prompt to freshen up the traditional "What I Did On My Summer Vacation." Young readers will be surprised to learn that Peggy Parish wrote about characters other than Amelia Bedelia.

Editorial Review:

Summer vacation at Pirate Island! Liza, Bill, and Jed can’t believe their grandparents’ wonderful surprise. The excitement begins even before they reach the island, as Grandpa gives the first clue to the unsolved mystery of a long-lost family “treasure.”

Whether it’s their frightening run-ins with Hermit Dan, a wild and scary romp with a swooping bat, or a midnight trip into the woods, tracking the series of weird picture clues leads the children all over the island and into all sorts of adventures.

Hi I am 6 yrs old and you may have seem my reviews before. I am a great fan of I can read books. This one is really one of my favorites. I like what Todds parent's did for him. I also like how helpful and patient Mrs. Star was to Todd. But most of all I loved Scruffy! This book also taught me things about cats I didn't know. If you love animals or want one you should read this book. Again the best part is you can read it to your parents and not have them read it to you.

Fantastic information al book 3 out of 5 stars.

I am a first grade public school teacher who believes strongly in humane education. One of my children brought this book to school for book share. I was delighted to hear the acturate information that was presented. Many important animal welfare topics where touched upon. It was a wonderful discussion starter for how to be a responsible pet owner. The children were able to ask many relevant questions and get realistic answers. What a great book to read with children who care about animals. My children asked to hear it again and again.

Editorial Review:

There are lots of different cats for Todd to choose from at the animal shelter. But there's only one Scruffy.

Editorial Review:

After a frightening run-in with Hermit Dan earlier in the summer, Liza, Bill, and Jed are determined to stay away from the old man. But the stories the islanders tell about him make them curious. Were Hermit Dan’s ancestors really pirates? Why does he avoid people? What’s in the box he keeps buried in the dunes? Liza, Bill, and Jed stir up plenty of excitement when they set out to discover the secrets of Hermit Dan’s past.

Editorial Review:

In this vibrant edition, newly recolored by the original illustrator, Amelia Bedelia's job search gets her into another ‘homonym hot seat because she does what she's told'literally. For example, she gets a job as a file clerk, only she takes out a nail file and shreds the papers she's supposed to file away! The comic convolutions are endless and endlessly enjoyable.'The Baton Rouge Advocate Magazine.

Granny and the Indians is an entertaining book for a child of 7 years old. I read this book to my daughter for the first time when she was 4 and now she reads it to me. It is a delightful book. Too bad it is out of print.
