In BEST SHORTS, you never know what surprise you're going to get next. Unlike many short story collections, which usually revolve around some thread of a theme, the stories Avi selected for this anthology come from all over the genre spectrum. The one thing they all have in common, however, is that they are all great little adventures you can experience without the big time commitment of an entire novel.

Readers can get freaked out by seeing what happens when Dad loses his cell phone at Auntie's funeral, travel along with some city-smart boys who try to camp out alone, and root for an entire bank who adopts a baby abandoned in the night-deposit box.

It's pretty slick how a well-written short story can suck you in; before you know it, you're reading a genre that you are sure you don't like. An interesting thing that happened to me as I read this compilation of stories is that I enjoyed stories in genres that I may never have picked up if they had been labeled. As I read these stories to my sixth-grade students, they wanted to get copies of their own. They, too, enjoyed the punch in these stories and the wide variety of styles and genres.

How can you go wrong with a book featuring stories from such authors as Richard Peck, Lloyd Alexander, Washington Irving, Theodore Taylor, and even Avi himself?

If you're looking for a sampler of authors or genres, or a few short stories to read between novels, or something to read without committing to an entire book, or you just feel like something a little different, then try BEST SHORTS on for size. It is one of those one-size-fits-all kind of collections.

An adult review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book follows Gilly a foster child as she gorws up. Through her feeling of hate toward her foster mother and brother to her angst at school. Gilly learns that no matter how much anger, discomfort, and hardships you put people through the ones who really love you aren't going to stop because you did something bad.

Editorial Review:

Gilly Hopkins is a determined-to-be-unpleasant 11-year-old foster kid who the reader can't help but like by the end. Gilly has been in the foster system all her life, and she dreams of getting back to her (as she imagines) wonderful mother. (The mother makes these longings worse by writing the occasional letter.) Gilly is all the more determined to leave after she's placed in a new foster home with a "gross guardian and a freaky kid." But she soon learns about illusions--the hard way. This Newbery Honor Book manages to treat a somewhat grim, and definitely grown-up theme with love and humor, making it a terrific read for a young reader who's ready to learn that "happy" and "ending" don't always go together. NOT for CATHOLICS 1 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

François Roca is a renowned illustrator of over 30 children's books; his artistry is extraordinary. He lives in Paris, and subsequently most of the books he illustrates are written in French. When his beautiful illustrations on the life of Jesus were to be given English text, the publisher selected Katherine Paterson.

Unfortunate selection.

Ms. Paterson took it upon herself to change Jesus' words at the last supper to suit her own agenda.

Instead of children reading, "this is my body," they now get "this is LIKE my body." (Emphasis mine). Instead of reading, "this is my blood," they now get, "this is LIKE my blood."

What's next, "I am LIKE the light of the world"? "I am LIKE the savior"?

I bought this book to read to my daughters, based on the strength of a national reviewer's syndicated column, which, unfortunately, omitted Ms. Paterson's embroideries upon the text. I write this review to inform Christians of the writer's non-textual based insertions.

The Bible (King James version quoted below) is unambiguous regarding the words of Jesus at the last supper:

Mark 14:22 reads:

And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

Luke 22:19 reads:

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Matthew 26:26 reads:

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

John 6:52-55 reads:

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

John 6:58 reads:

This is that bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

1 Cor. 11:27-29 reads:

"Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord." But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Suffice it to say Ms. Paterson's additions to Jesus' words will be offensive to Catholics such as myself, and ruin an otherwise gorgeous publication. But I would suspect that non-Catholic Christians who consider scripture sacred, particularly the words of Jesus being read to children, will likewise appreciate being informed when a writer decides to augument Jesus' words.

If you buy this book for the beautiful illustrations, it would be truer to sacred scripture to white out Ms. Paterson's additions to Jesus' words.

Editorial Review:

"When the people looked at all the sadness and evil in the world, they had trouble believing that God was in charge. 'God's kingdom,' said Jesus, 'is as tiny as the smallest of seeds, but when it is planted it grows into such a huge tree that the birds make their nests in its branches.'"

Newbery Medalist & minister's wife Katherine Paterson retells the life of Jesus in simple, beautiful language for all ages, making the story new again through her trademark generosity and compassion. Iconic images from Jesus's life light the text with the same warmth and directness. A perfect gift book!

Editorial Review:

The story starts out simply enough: Jess Aarons wants to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade--he wants it so bad he can taste it. He's been practicing all summer, running in the fields around his farmhouse until he collapses in a sweat. Then a tomboy named Leslie Burke moves into the farmhouse next door and changes his life forever. Not only does Leslie not look or act like any girls Jess knows, but she also turns out to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. After getting over the shock and humiliation of being beaten by a girl, Jess begins to think Leslie might be okay.

Despite their superficial differences, it's clear that Jess and Leslie are soul mates. The two create a secret kingdom in the woods named Terabithia, where the only way to get into the castle is by swinging out over a gully on an enchanted rope. Here they reign as king and queen, fighting off imaginary giants and the walking dead, sharing stories and dreams, and plotting against the schoolmates who tease them. Jess and Leslie find solace in the sanctuary of Terabithia until a tragedy strikes and the two are separated forever. In a style that is both plain and powerful, Katherine Paterson's characters will stir your heart and put a lump in your throat.

Lyddie- a review by Kelsey 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Lyddie is a very poor farm girl who has a crazed mother who believes everything to be a bad sign. Her and her brother Charlie are very close and will do anything for each other. When a bear intrudes on the family Lyddie's mother takes it as a bad sign. She takes her youngest children to her sisters house and leaves Charlie and lyddie to take care of the farm. They end up surviving the winter only to find out their mother has found separate jobs for them. The children reluctantly leave each other as they set out for their jobs. Lyddie is to work in a inn where she gets payed about fifty cents a week. While working at the inn Lyddie gets her chance to change her life. Lyddie goes to work at a factory. Lyddie is known as "close to her money and her friendships" but you will never learn of someone who works harder.

Lyddie finally learns there are many things wrong with the world then and are still major problems today. First, that women are not treated equally. She goes through what seems like a very long journey to learn all the lessons that she ends up learning in this book. I liked this book a lot. It taught me how to react to different things and that we should give everyone a chance no matter what race or religion they are. This book gave me a perspective which I couldn't see before and it wasn't a really big change I saw once I had read it but it did effect me when I saw what men thought of women back then. I think people should read this book just because it has an interesting plot line and can teach you different things you didn't think you could learn from this kind of book.

Editorial Review:

I really enjoyed this book and felt like it dealt well with some real feelings children might have about moving. I liked how the parents handled their childs way of dealing with his problems.

My nephew aged 5 immensely enjoyed this book. It was a really cute story with a surprise ending. He read it very easily, but he has a fourth grade reading level. The kidnergartener in him liked the story though although the reading level was not a challenge. Good Book, Good read, recommended.

Not worthy of the award 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I am totally blown away by the thought of a 14-year-old girl being romantically attracted to and interested in a man old enough to be her grandfather. And all of this just "hit her" when she hugged him? Not very believable to me. Why would something like this be written for children?

Jacob have I loved 5 out of 5 stars.

An interesting read following the trials of a young girl and her struggle to find herself and her place in the world. This is a beautifully written coming of age story sure to instill hope and a little bit of faith in the young reader.

Decent, but not great 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It must be tough to be Katherine Paterson. She's won three Newbery Awards, and penned what is unarguably one of the most emotionally moving books of all-time, "Bridge to Terabithia." Since she has consistently written great stuff, people expect everyone of her books to be great. However, things don't work like that, and "The Flip Flop Girl" is an example of a decent, but not great Paterson book.

This book does contain many of Paterson's usual themes- her main character is a social/economic outcast with a troubled homelife which is almost a stock situation in Paterson's books. It's one of Paterson's most unique traits- her characters are not from well-to-do, stable homes, and it's one of her greatest strengths in that she enables young readers to empathasize with characters who in real-life they might ostracize.

Here the main character is Lavinia "Vinnie" Matthews whose father has just died, and whose family, consisting of a working mom and younger brother, has moved from the Washington, D.C. area to a small Virginia town to live with her step-grandmother. It's tough enough being the new kid, but money is tight so Vinnie goes to school in clothes bought from the Salvation Army. Also, life is even made more difficult because her younger brother, Mason, stopped talking after the death of their father and has developed into a serious behaviorial problem. Vinnie is further distressed by the fact that Mason's issues have gathered almost all of their harried mother's attentions.

A dead father, a "weird" little brother, a clueless grandmother, an inattentive mother, and a completely new (and not particularly friendly) environment have led Vinnie almost to despair. However, she finds solace in the attentions and praise of a kind-hearted teacher, Mr. Clayton, and the awkward "friendship" with a girl who is even more of an outcast than she is- Lupe Mahoney, "the flip-flop girl." Tall, quiet, and always wearing orange flip-flops, Lupe stands out among her classmates not only in appearance, but also in that there seems to be a stigma about her that has led the other kids to avoid her and adults, not as kind-hearted as Mr. Clayton, to suspect her first in any wrongdoing. By learning about Lupe and her life, Vinnie starts to come to terms with her father's death and the effects it's had on her family.

The strength of the book is that the characters are eminently believable, a Paterson forte. Further, it does a wonderful job of showing how the death of a parent can emotionally effect a child, and offers comfort that one can deal with the pain. However, the book wraps things up a little too quickly and neatly which is very unusual for a Paterson book. Also, the emotional high point just seems to be something recycled from "Bridge to Terabithia"- a child rescued by another which results in an understanding between siblings. It also contains a cheesy "made for tv movie" like transformation. Overall, this is a decent Paterson book, but she has written a lot better ones.

Editorial Review:

Wishing for a miracle that will bring her father back to life and restore her family, Vinnie Matthews protects her younger brothers from the bullying kids who tease him for refusing to speak and finds a needed friend in Lupe. Reprint. H. AB. SLJ.

Jip, a character who will make you cry 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Jip, his story is a book for children and young adults. Again Katherine Paterson does her best to offer her readers a really touching story.
Jip, the cental character, is an orphan who suffers from the cruelty of all adults around him in his struggle to discover his real identity. His adventures, his metaphorical journey towards self - identification captures the reader from the very beginning.
It's a historically accurate story placed in Vermont, in the mid 19th century. It presents vividly this dark period of America, dealing with the major theme of slavery and man's quest for freedom.
Undoubtedly, it's a novel which not only entertains but also informs and makes people think ...

Editorial Review:

When an aged lunatic named Putnam arrives at a poorhouse farm in rural Vermont in 1855, he is treated as little more than a beast by everyone except the orphan Jip, who himself arrived at the charity orphanage/asylum after being found abandoned by the roadside. Jip and Putnam become friends, then allies of a sort, as Jip struggles to improve his own lot and that of his friend Lucy, the unfortunate daughter of the late town drunk. This historical tale by Katherine Paterson involves its young protagonist in the great 19th century struggle between slave owners and abolitionists while sending him into a test of his own loyalty and courage. Paterson handles weighty issues with grace and verve, and does not shrink from terrible truths in this challenging novel for young readers.

Angels and Other Strangers--A treat to treasure 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is an inspiring collection of true Christmas stories by Katherine Paterson, author of the Bridge to Terabithia, Jacob Have I Loved, and other high-quality books. She has won numerous awards for her work. The stories in this book are not your typical meaningless holiday tripe. Instead, they deal with real people in real situations, and how they found hope, courage and faith in the midst of them. This is a book to be treasured.

Your heart will sing like a choir of angels upon completion of this joyful holiday effort 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Around the holidays, so many different collections of inspirational stories appear on bookstore shelves, that it's often hard to muddle through them all, in an attempt to find the gems. With Katherine Paterson's ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS, however, it was quite simple to discover that this was one of the gems, based on the first story alone.

ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS - After a series of aggravating Christmases spent in various strange places, including the hospital, Julia Thompson is happy to know that this year, there will be no interruptions from crabby Aunt Patty. However, on Christmas Eve, she receives a call, and suddenly finds herself, along with her infant, and young son, Kevin, reluctantly riding the dark roads of Washington on her way to pick up the renowned Aunt Patty. When she runs out of gas, a man she has never met before named Jacob, on his way (on foot) to visit his pregnant daughter Arlene. Upon their paths crossing, the two each receive a holiday miracle that they'll never forget. 4/5 stars.

GUESTS - Pastor Nagai has had a lonesome year, having been the victim of a terrible bombing that took his entire family away from him, simply because he believes in Christ, and the American holiday traditions. Traditions that are not embraced by the Japanese. Even so, on Christmas Eve, Pastor Nagai begins his holiday service, only to be surprised by guests who are interested in hearing what he has to say. 4/5 stars.

MANY HAPPY RERUNS - Elizabeth is sick of everything lately. From the screechy singing voice of her Sunday School teacher, Miss Violet, to the fact that she has to endure annoying Aunt Gladys until her mother returns from the hospital, a new baby in tow. However, none of that can compare to the fact that her parents are practically forgetting about Christmas, and Elizabeth altogether - spending too much time fussing over the new baby. So when Elizabeth decides to do something about it, she has no idea that she'll put herself in the position to learn yet another lesson just in time for the holidays. 4/5 stars.

TIDINGS OF JOY - Carol can't wait for her new baby to be born. The name - Joy - is already picked out for the little girl. But when she has a terrible nightmare three months into her pregnancy, she's shaken up, worrying non-stop until the baby is born, and her nightmare is proven true. Now, without the love of a newborn, Carol finds it hard to take care of her toddler, finding herself snapping at him at all different times, for no reason. That is, until she finally realizes that Joy was meant to do something better in life than stay here on Earth. 4/5 stars.

MAGGIE'S GIFT - When Mr. McGee is invited to spend Christmas in Hawaii with his daughter, and rich husband, he quickly turns down the offer, not interested in spending his holiday in the warm sun surrounded by hula dancers. So when he's offered the chance to open his home, and his heart, to two orphans (a brother and sister), he quickly accepts; only to find that his new charges are ungrateful, and searching for things that he can't afford. It is only when Mr. McGee (who is temporary family have begun referring to as Maggie) teaches the two children a lesson about giving back and sharing, that the holiday begins looking up. 4/5 stars.

STAR OF NIGHT - Carl has been searching for his drug-abusing son Jimmy for years, ever since he first left Chicago. Rumors of death have been floating around since then, but Carl has never been sure. So when he receives a phone call from one of Jimmy's old friends, saying that he was spotted in Washington, Carl, noting that it's Christmas, hops a plane, leaving his family behind, in an attempt to search for his son. When he arrives, however, he is surprised by something even more unexpected. Something that is sure to make his holiday bright. 4/5 stars.

HE CAME DOWN - Lydia has been suffering from depression ever since her husband passed away, leading her to lock herself up tight in her home, and shut everyone out. However, when her son Stephen, a pastor, invites her to spend the holiday with him, she feels that she can't refuse. Then she is asked to take care of a sick woman's baby as her daughter participates in the Church play, in the character of Mary. Lydia is wary, but soon realizes that spending time with this sick woman, along with her child, is exactly what both women needed. 4/5 stars.

WOODROW KENNINGTON WORKS PRACTICALLY A MIRACLE - Woodrow Kennington has always found his younger sister Sara Jane to be supremely annoying. Messing up his stuff, digging through his room. Which is why he's excited to learn that his parents are expecting a new baby - hopefully one who will respect him. When Sara Jane learns about this, however, she becomes obsessed with the Lord, and praying, and slowly begins to drive Woodrow out of his mind. So, in an attempt to bring the old Sara Jane back, he plays a trick on her; only to find that it questions her faith, and leaves her rejecting what she previously embraced. 4/5 stars.

BROKEN WINDOWS - Philip has been a pastor for over 35-years, but still can't manage to come up with a sermon for the holidays that will work wonders - which is what he's looking for. Then, something strange happens, a baseball breaks a church window, and Philip encounters two little boys and their mother (their father having left them), who want nothing more than a nice Christmas and their father back. Philip, having yelled at them previously, feels horrible for what he's done, and now plans on helping them to have the best Christmas they've ever had, while writing a sermon that will knock his congregation of their feet. 4/5 stars.

I was hesitant to read ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS when I first stumbled upon it, as there are so many holiday short story collections that rarely live up to your expectations. Which is why I am happy to say that ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS did not fall into this category. From the very first story to the very last, I was absorbed in reading these touching tales that flocked all over the world, describing families of all different nationalities, races, and more. With each story, you are filled with a warmth that stays with you long after the book is completed. The shining stars of this collection would most likely have to be WOODROW KENNINGTON WORKS PRACTICALLY A MIRACLE and ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS. However, each story must be read in completion, for they all possess their own traits, and miracles, which can't be missed. Katherine Paterson has woven an inspiring collection of short stories that will make you smile from ear to ear, and thaw even the Grinch's cold heart and soul. Your heart will sing like a choir of angels upon completion of this joyful holiday effort.
