A Pedal of the Chrysanthemun 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The book starts off with a boy named Muna, the nameless one, whos mother just passed away. He now wants to look for his warrior father so that he would be able to be highly respected and change his name of his 14th birthday to a name more proper for a man, but the only thing he knows about his father is that he has a chrysanthemun tattoo and a he is a Heike warrior.
I thought this book was quite good. It had many dialogues, a good storyline, and some action. Most of all, I liked how the book was easy to understand.

Editorial Review:

Muna has never known his father -- a samurai, a noble warrior. But Muna's mother has told Muna how he will know him one day: by the sign of the chrysanthemum. When his mother dies, Muna travels to the capital of twelfth-century Japan, a bewildering city on the verge of revolution. He finds a haven there, as servant to the great swordsmith, Fukuji. But Muna cannot forget his dream: He must find his father. Only then will he have power and a name to be reckoned with. Only then will he become a man.

Don't waste your time... 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"Of Nightingales That Weep" was a book that I read purely because I had to, at school. The plot is weak and at times confusing. The main character is so selfish that it's not even funny, and her selfishness, unlike some bad traits of characters, doesn't help the plot. In the end, she has a baby with her stepfather, which disgusted most of the kids in my English class.

If you really want to read something about Japan, try a piece from Japan. It is much more accurate and the characters are most likely not selfish.

Great but complicated book. 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book as a child and still enjoyed when I reread it as an adult. This is a great story about a girl who grows into a women. It does contain some adult themes however when I was a child and my mother read it to me I did not fully understand these parts. A lot of people do die in this book and it is not light hearted. As a child I didn't understand that the ending was somewhat of a happy one. This is a story of the destruction of lives and how they come back together and how happiness does not always come in the form you expect.

Editorial Review:

The vain young daughter of a samurai finds her comfortable life ripped apart when opposing warrior clans begin a struggle for imperial control of Japan.

Angels and Other Strangers--A treat to treasure 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is an inspiring collection of true Christmas stories by Katherine Paterson, author of the Bridge to Terabithia, Jacob Have I Loved, and other high-quality books. She has won numerous awards for her work. The stories in this book are not your typical meaningless holiday tripe. Instead, they deal with real people in real situations, and how they found hope, courage and faith in the midst of them. This is a book to be treasured.

Your heart will sing like a choir of angels upon completion of this joyful holiday effort 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Around the holidays, so many different collections of inspirational stories appear on bookstore shelves, that it's often hard to muddle through them all, in an attempt to find the gems. With Katherine Paterson's ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS, however, it was quite simple to discover that this was one of the gems, based on the first story alone.

ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS - After a series of aggravating Christmases spent in various strange places, including the hospital, Julia Thompson is happy to know that this year, there will be no interruptions from crabby Aunt Patty. However, on Christmas Eve, she receives a call, and suddenly finds herself, along with her infant, and young son, Kevin, reluctantly riding the dark roads of Washington on her way to pick up the renowned Aunt Patty. When she runs out of gas, a man she has never met before named Jacob, on his way (on foot) to visit his pregnant daughter Arlene. Upon their paths crossing, the two each receive a holiday miracle that they'll never forget. 4/5 stars.

GUESTS - Pastor Nagai has had a lonesome year, having been the victim of a terrible bombing that took his entire family away from him, simply because he believes in Christ, and the American holiday traditions. Traditions that are not embraced by the Japanese. Even so, on Christmas Eve, Pastor Nagai begins his holiday service, only to be surprised by guests who are interested in hearing what he has to say. 4/5 stars.

MANY HAPPY RERUNS - Elizabeth is sick of everything lately. From the screechy singing voice of her Sunday School teacher, Miss Violet, to the fact that she has to endure annoying Aunt Gladys until her mother returns from the hospital, a new baby in tow. However, none of that can compare to the fact that her parents are practically forgetting about Christmas, and Elizabeth altogether - spending too much time fussing over the new baby. So when Elizabeth decides to do something about it, she has no idea that she'll put herself in the position to learn yet another lesson just in time for the holidays. 4/5 stars.

TIDINGS OF JOY - Carol can't wait for her new baby to be born. The name - Joy - is already picked out for the little girl. But when she has a terrible nightmare three months into her pregnancy, she's shaken up, worrying non-stop until the baby is born, and her nightmare is proven true. Now, without the love of a newborn, Carol finds it hard to take care of her toddler, finding herself snapping at him at all different times, for no reason. That is, until she finally realizes that Joy was meant to do something better in life than stay here on Earth. 4/5 stars.

MAGGIE'S GIFT - When Mr. McGee is invited to spend Christmas in Hawaii with his daughter, and rich husband, he quickly turns down the offer, not interested in spending his holiday in the warm sun surrounded by hula dancers. So when he's offered the chance to open his home, and his heart, to two orphans (a brother and sister), he quickly accepts; only to find that his new charges are ungrateful, and searching for things that he can't afford. It is only when Mr. McGee (who is temporary family have begun referring to as Maggie) teaches the two children a lesson about giving back and sharing, that the holiday begins looking up. 4/5 stars.

STAR OF NIGHT - Carl has been searching for his drug-abusing son Jimmy for years, ever since he first left Chicago. Rumors of death have been floating around since then, but Carl has never been sure. So when he receives a phone call from one of Jimmy's old friends, saying that he was spotted in Washington, Carl, noting that it's Christmas, hops a plane, leaving his family behind, in an attempt to search for his son. When he arrives, however, he is surprised by something even more unexpected. Something that is sure to make his holiday bright. 4/5 stars.

HE CAME DOWN - Lydia has been suffering from depression ever since her husband passed away, leading her to lock herself up tight in her home, and shut everyone out. However, when her son Stephen, a pastor, invites her to spend the holiday with him, she feels that she can't refuse. Then she is asked to take care of a sick woman's baby as her daughter participates in the Church play, in the character of Mary. Lydia is wary, but soon realizes that spending time with this sick woman, along with her child, is exactly what both women needed. 4/5 stars.

WOODROW KENNINGTON WORKS PRACTICALLY A MIRACLE - Woodrow Kennington has always found his younger sister Sara Jane to be supremely annoying. Messing up his stuff, digging through his room. Which is why he's excited to learn that his parents are expecting a new baby - hopefully one who will respect him. When Sara Jane learns about this, however, she becomes obsessed with the Lord, and praying, and slowly begins to drive Woodrow out of his mind. So, in an attempt to bring the old Sara Jane back, he plays a trick on her; only to find that it questions her faith, and leaves her rejecting what she previously embraced. 4/5 stars.

BROKEN WINDOWS - Philip has been a pastor for over 35-years, but still can't manage to come up with a sermon for the holidays that will work wonders - which is what he's looking for. Then, something strange happens, a baseball breaks a church window, and Philip encounters two little boys and their mother (their father having left them), who want nothing more than a nice Christmas and their father back. Philip, having yelled at them previously, feels horrible for what he's done, and now plans on helping them to have the best Christmas they've ever had, while writing a sermon that will knock his congregation of their feet. 4/5 stars.

I was hesitant to read ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS when I first stumbled upon it, as there are so many holiday short story collections that rarely live up to your expectations. Which is why I am happy to say that ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS did not fall into this category. From the very first story to the very last, I was absorbed in reading these touching tales that flocked all over the world, describing families of all different nationalities, races, and more. With each story, you are filled with a warmth that stays with you long after the book is completed. The shining stars of this collection would most likely have to be WOODROW KENNINGTON WORKS PRACTICALLY A MIRACLE and ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS. However, each story must be read in completion, for they all possess their own traits, and miracles, which can't be missed. Katherine Paterson has woven an inspiring collection of short stories that will make you smile from ear to ear, and thaw even the Grinch's cold heart and soul. Your heart will sing like a choir of angels upon completion of this joyful holiday effort.

Patterson radiates the true meaning of Christmas 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Turn down the volume to Bing Crosby's "White Christmas " C.D.! Gather the family 'round the Christmas tree! Katherine Patterson has done it again. Patterson shows her versatile writing style in her collection of short stories, A Midnight Clear: Stories for the Christmas Season. From a pregnant woman in Marion, Virginia, to a political prisoner in Red China, these stories radiate the true spirit of the Christmas season. Enjoy this work of Katherine Patterson as you roast your chesnuts over the open fire!

Editorial Review:

The true meaning of Christmas can be found in this lovely gift book of twelve modern-day stories inspired by the hope and peace of the season. Over the years, the author wrote these stories for her husband, a reverend, who read them to his congregation every Christmas Eve. The stories encompass a variety of themes--from a tale of a child coping with disappointment, to a proud, lonely widow befriended by a well-meaning boy, to a couple awaiting the birth of their baby. Each story possesses a warmth and spirituality which could only come from Katherine Paterson.

Decent, but not great 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It must be tough to be Katherine Paterson. She's won three Newbery Awards, and penned what is unarguably one of the most emotionally moving books of all-time, "Bridge to Terabithia." Since she has consistently written great stuff, people expect everyone of her books to be great. However, things don't work like that, and "The Flip Flop Girl" is an example of a decent, but not great Paterson book.

This book does contain many of Paterson's usual themes- her main character is a social/economic outcast with a troubled homelife which is almost a stock situation in Paterson's books. It's one of Paterson's most unique traits- her characters are not from well-to-do, stable homes, and it's one of her greatest strengths in that she enables young readers to empathasize with characters who in real-life they might ostracize.

Here the main character is Lavinia "Vinnie" Matthews whose father has just died, and whose family, consisting of a working mom and younger brother, has moved from the Washington, D.C. area to a small Virginia town to live with her step-grandmother. It's tough enough being the new kid, but money is tight so Vinnie goes to school in clothes bought from the Salvation Army. Also, life is even made more difficult because her younger brother, Mason, stopped talking after the death of their father and has developed into a serious behaviorial problem. Vinnie is further distressed by the fact that Mason's issues have gathered almost all of their harried mother's attentions.

A dead father, a "weird" little brother, a clueless grandmother, an inattentive mother, and a completely new (and not particularly friendly) environment have led Vinnie almost to despair. However, she finds solace in the attentions and praise of a kind-hearted teacher, Mr. Clayton, and the awkward "friendship" with a girl who is even more of an outcast than she is- Lupe Mahoney, "the flip-flop girl." Tall, quiet, and always wearing orange flip-flops, Lupe stands out among her classmates not only in appearance, but also in that there seems to be a stigma about her that has led the other kids to avoid her and adults, not as kind-hearted as Mr. Clayton, to suspect her first in any wrongdoing. By learning about Lupe and her life, Vinnie starts to come to terms with her father's death and the effects it's had on her family.

The strength of the book is that the characters are eminently believable, a Paterson forte. Further, it does a wonderful job of showing how the death of a parent can emotionally effect a child, and offers comfort that one can deal with the pain. However, the book wraps things up a little too quickly and neatly which is very unusual for a Paterson book. Also, the emotional high point just seems to be something recycled from "Bridge to Terabithia"- a child rescued by another which results in an understanding between siblings. It also contains a cheesy "made for tv movie" like transformation. Overall, this is a decent Paterson book, but she has written a lot better ones.

Editorial Review:

Wishing for a miracle that will bring her father back to life and restore her family, Vinnie Matthews protects her younger brothers from the bullying kids who tease him for refusing to speak and finds a needed friend in Lupe. Reprint. H. AB. SLJ.

Book Review. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Angel had a hard life, with an unreliable mother, her father in jail, and a seven year old brat of a brother, Bernie. When she was only eleven, her mother, Bernie, and her, moved in with their poor grandmother. One night, her mother disappeared, without warning. Angel was very responsible, she made sure Bernie read, did his homework, ate right, and was more of an adult than her own mother. One day, Bernie didn't come home from school. He was missing for quite a few weeks when he called Angel and asked if she could visit him in the hospital. He was in an accident with his mother and her drunk boyfriend. The man didn't like children at all, and he left Verna, Angel's mom, and Bernie. The only thing Angel had to look forward to in life, was seeing the Star Man every night she could. He taught her about the stars, and how we are made of the same stuff as stars. Angel always wondered how the stars could be so humongous, and make her feel so tiny. The Star Man taught Angel about the North Star, Polaris, and the Andromeda Galaxy. That's all he could teach her because he died soon after, and Angel was so sad, everyone in her life was deserting her. Her mother, her brother, her father, and now her best friend, the Star Man. This book was very interesting, and could make someone realize how great their life is, and teach people to be more thankful. This book was really interesting and not at all boring to read. I recommend this book to people that like reading about stars and not-so-average families.

Angel had a really hard time growing up, but still she managed to survive. It teaches a lesson to be lucky for what you've got, and not complain about petty things. She was deserted by almost all her family, but still she kept with it, and did the best for her family and their health. She was more responsible than her mother and her grandmother combined. Thanks to her persistence and effort, Bernie was safe, healthy, and happy. This book was very good.

This book was very interesting because it keeps the reader guessing what is going to happen, but what really happens is totally unexpected and exciting. It was not boring at all because she had such an interesting life, definitely difficult, but nonetheless interesting. She never cared what people thought about her, as long as she was being herself. She didn't care that she had no friends, all she needed was her family, and the stars. It was very interesting.

I recommend this book to people that like stars, and reading about them, because it is very informative, and very neat to learn about many stars, pretty much everything about them. To Angel, the stars are her only friends, besides the Star Man. I also recommend this book because it was funny at some times, sad at others, etc.

I definitely recommend this book to readers that like stars, or just if someone wants to read a great book about a poor family that survived all thanks to an eleven year old girl, Angel.

Editorial Review:

Angel Morgan needs help. Daddy is in jail, and Mama has abandoned her and her little brother, leaving them with their great-grandmother. Grandma is aged and poor, and doesn't make any attempt to care for the children—that's left up to Angel, even though she is not yet twelve. The only bright spot in Angel's existence is the Star Man, a mysterious stranger who appears on clear nights and teaches her all about the stars and planets and constellations. "We're made out of the same stuff as the stars," he tells her.

Eventually, Grandma warms to the children and the three begin to cobble together a makeshift family. Then events in Angel's life take yet another downturn, and she must once again find a way to persevere.

Katherine Paterson's keen sensitivity and penetrating sense of drama bring us a moving story of throwaway children, reminding us of the incredible resilience of childhood and the unquenchable spirit that, in spite of loss, struggles to new beginnings.

Jip, a character who will make you cry 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Jip, his story is a book for children and young adults. Again Katherine Paterson does her best to offer her readers a really touching story.
Jip, the cental character, is an orphan who suffers from the cruelty of all adults around him in his struggle to discover his real identity. His adventures, his metaphorical journey towards self - identification captures the reader from the very beginning.
It's a historically accurate story placed in Vermont, in the mid 19th century. It presents vividly this dark period of America, dealing with the major theme of slavery and man's quest for freedom.
Undoubtedly, it's a novel which not only entertains but also informs and makes people think ...

Editorial Review:

They tell Jip he tumbled off the back of a wagon when he was small, and no one ever came back for him. He never had reason to question this tale—but then a stranger shows up and begins asking about him around town. Who is this man, and could he possibly know something about Jip’s mysterious past?

The Art and Craft of Children's Writing by Connie Epstein 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is an indepth look at writing from an editor's point of view. I found it very helpful.

An inspiration 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The first reviewer may be referring to a different book, as I don't remember the name Connie Epstein being on there.

This book is not a lesson on the craft of writing for children, despite what the title might tell you. There are no diagrams for an arc of conflict or character questionnaires. Instead, it contains the essays of six famous children's book authors on the sources of their inspiration. It's very funny and at times, personal--a great read for both aspiring writers and people who just enjoy children's books.

I recommend this book as a chaser to a more technical nuts-and-bolts of writing book. It will remind you of the spiritual and personal side of writing, rather than simply plot, conflict, and characters.

Editorial Review:

Six acclaimed authors of books for children discuss their works in this latest volume in the critically praised Writer's Craft series. The authors include Jean Fritz, Maurice Sendak, Jill Krementz, Jack Prelutsky, Rosemary Wells and Katherine Paterson.
