Great Story for Dog Lovers 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I say this is a great dog story for two reasons no dogs die in the story. This is always very important to me when I read a dog story. The other thing that makes it good is the adventures Josh and his dog, Manch, have in the story feel real. Anyone who is a dog lover, like me, always knows their dog will be there for them in a time of need and the reverse is true too. Josh is there for his dog and Manch is there for Josh.

Josh is a young man facing many difficult situations in his life. His father has died and his mother has remarried. His stepfather has moved the family to Vermont so Josh has no friends besides his dog,Manch. Both Manch and Josh face the same problem in the story, bullies. Manch had made friends with some other dogs in Vermont so at least he has friends but there is a pack of mean dogs that are threatening Manch and his friends. At the same time Josh is being pursued by a bunch of bullies from school. Luckily the dogs successfully save Josh from the school bullies but when Josh tries to help save Manch and his dog friends from the mean dogs things don't go so well. The good part is that Josh even though he is scared to death tries to help the dogs in the best way he can think of by stealing his stepfather's gun, but when things don't work out he lets go of his pride and asks for help, thank goodness.

THere is one element of the book that is interesting but I am not sure it fits in well. Josh discovers the dogs talk. Any dog owner always wishes their dog could talk so this seems neat at first but the dogs only talk to Josh a few times. It is as if Josh has invaded their private world and they don't really appreciate it. Don't get me wrong though I still think the book was great even though I'm not sure about this part of it.

Editorial Review:

How do you get rid of a bully?

Josh has just moved to cold, snowy Vermont with his mother, stepfather, and new baby brother. As if adjusting to a new home, a new family, and a new school isn't hard enough—Josh also has to adjust to a new bully, Wes Rockett.

Then one day Josh's dog, Manch, gets loose. When Josh follows him to the field where Manch plays, he is surprised to discover that Manch can talk, and his dog's got a bully of his own to deal with. Can Josh find a way to solve all of their bully problems without leading them to danger?

Newbery Medal—winning author Katherine Paterson delivers another touching and accessible story for young readers.

Love Takes Wing 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This beautifully illustrated book and equally beautiful story is very moving. It is set in old Japan and is a look at Japanese history and culture.

It is the story of love; of being willing to take chances to protect another and about kindness rewarding many times over. It speaks to the ripple effect of how one single act of kindness, in this case freeing an imprisoned drake will be rewarded lovingly.

Great Read Aloud! 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is great to read to kids! It has suspense and it also shows kids how doing the right thing can seem bad, but soon you'll get something back. I liked the moral of the story and I like the way they illustarted it to look just like ancient Japan.

Charming and affectionate 5 out of 5 stars.

This lovely book maeasures up to every standard one can reasonably expect. The artwork is skilled and enjoyable. The story has kindness, altruism, moral dilemma and resolution, reward, and a big touch of magic. There's a pleasant realism about story, too. It shows a number of details of Japanese life, in passing, to give a storybook kid views of a life [s]he might never have seen in person. And, although the words "happily ever after" never actually appear, the last page shows the young couple deep in their old age. The book, as a whole, meets every objective standard of what I like to see in a children's book.

For me, though, this book goes way beyond reasonable standards, well into the things I favor in a very personal and subjective way. I take immense pleasure ukiyo-e prints, the classical Japanese woodcut style that these modern artists imitate. I first saw the picture of the sleeping couple as a greeting card, and found it affectionate and romantic, with a tiny chaste hint of very grown-up love - that image led me to hunt this book down. The one-eyed samurai has meaning in my family, too. And the "madarin ducks" of the title, traditional symbols of fidelity, have a strong and affectionate significance for me for utterly personal reasons.

So I recommend this book to anyone with a read-to-me kid. It's very easy for anyone to like. For me, though, a striking set of coincidences make this a truly memorable work.

I didn't really like this book because it didn't make sense. It didn't make sense because he daydreamed so much you didn't know if he was daydreaming or not. I also didn't like it becuse the words werent discribed that well. Another reason I didn't like it was because it was confusing. It was confusing because it sounded all scrambled up.

flat characters, sexist, and not that fun to read 3 out of 5 stars.

This is not really a favorite of mine. It might have been the subtly...misogynist would be too strong a word...male biased perspective. (I don't think this was necessarily the author's intention, or if it was, if could have to do with creating a sense of realism that this is a boy with issues talking during the late 1980's, since he was also quite racist.) Even with this, it is an opportunity to uncover those subtle messages of blame and judgment on the female characters and talk about them and why men generally receive different treatment in the book, so if someone had to read it for class, for example, a Good teacher might bring up these ideas. Otherwise, it leaves you with a somewhat icky feeling, or at least it did with me.

As I mentioned, in a solid class environment, this book has plenty of themes and historical events to draw from, what with plot points revolving around the Vietnam War and Arthurian legend. As far as reading it for pleasure, I'd skip this one and pick something a little better with more dimensional characters with a more enlightening journey. This fell flat of my expectations...I think three stars is quite generous.

"Paterson offers her young readers a glimpse of the Vietnam War from what might be considered their own perspective: that of the next generation, the children of veterans, those for whom Vietnam is a vague historical event."--The New York Times.

Parzival ''`The Quest of the Grail Knight'' 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Parzival ``The Quest of the Grail Knight''

The book I read was Parzival ``The Quest of the Grail Knight'', Written by Katherine Paterson. The main character s Parzival. He lived in wilderness of Soltane.
At the beginning of the story Parzival is living with his mother. At that time he did not know he truly was the King. He left his mother in search of his identity. Along the way he met many people. He decided he wanted to become a knight for King Arthur's round table.
He went to see the King Arthur and while there he met a wizard who told him that Parzival didn't truly know who he was and that he needed to figure it out before he could become a knight. So he left the kingdom in search of his identify.
Shortly after leaving he met the Red Knight knew who Parzival was and tried to kill him. Parzival killed the Red Knight. Then he took the Red Knight's armor and horse and went on traveling for many years. He eventually met his sister, whom he had never know and found out he was a king, not a peasant man. He returned to King Arthur's court and was knighted.
On a scale from 1-5, I rate this book a 3 because it was hard to remember which character was who because there were so many different people he mat. If you like stories about knight, then you should read this book.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed storyteller Katherine Paterson breathes new life into this classic tale of action, adventure, and romance. Raised in the wilderness, Parzival knows nothing of his destiny as the Grail Knight--the one who is fated to seek the sacred vessel of hope and eternal life. To succeed in his quest, Parzival must struggle against countless obstacles. His triumphant story is one that will move readers to joy and despair, laughter and tears.

Fabulous pictures & relevant information 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book has great drawings that look more like photographs of some plants mentioned in the Bible. It is by no means an exhaustive reference. It quotes the biblical background first and then tells about the plant. It includes how it was used, how common it was, what it looked like and how it grew, etc. For example, it tells the wheat/weeds/mustard seed story from the NT parable, then has a full-page painting of wheat, mustard and darnel (the weed) next to each other, gives the latin name for each, and then writes this:
'For more than 8,000 years, various species of wheat have been cultivated in Asia Minor, and in Bible times, wheat was the main field crop. Since it was grown without irrigation, it suffered seriously in years of drought, and disastrous famines often resulted.

The 'weeds' referred to here were probably darnel grass or 'tares,' a hardy grass that grows only in grain fields. Before its seed heads form, it looks very much like wheat, and its seeds are about the same size and shape as wheat seeds, so they easily become mixed with the threshed grain. they not only adulterate the wheat but also can carry a poisonous fungus that causes blindness or even death.

The mustard seed in this passage is probably that of the common black mustard. In powdered form, these seeds have since earliest times been used for flavoring and medicine, but the Hebrews valued them chiefly for the oil they produce. In northern gardens, mustard is usually no more than three or four feet tall, but in hot countries it sometimes grows ten to fifteen feet high, with a stalk as thick as a man's arm."

I think it's a great book - great info, biblical relevance and great pictures (they're all like the cover basically).

Editorial Review:

Explores the symbolic significance of the flowers, fruits, and plants mentioned in various stories and passages of the Bible. Each passage is followed by a stunning full-color painting by one of America's most distinguished botanical illustrators.

great easy reader with a message 4 out of 5 stars.

Marvin arrives late on the first day of school . When he gets to his classroom the teacher tells him that hes one too many. She wasnt prepared for an extra student. Marvin thought that she didnt like him. As the school year goes on he is having troble learning to read. He finally talks with his parents about his problem and they help him.

I like the book because it opens up discussions on embarrassment and frustration. Children who are learning to read can relate to Marvins feelings. The will learn that if they keep trying reading will become easier to them.

I would recommed this book to kids who are learning to read. Its a part of the I Can Read Books Series. They will feel proud for themselves when they are able to read it alone.

Editorial Review:

Marvin is scared. It is the first day of school and everyone seems to know where to go -- except Marvin. Everyone seems to have a place in class -- except Marvin. And everyone seems to know how to read -- except Marvin.

Marvin's struggle with reading will ring true to reluctant and eager readers alike, and all will share his triumph in Katherine Paterson's reassuring story perfectly captured by Jane Clark Brown's illustrations.
