BORING!!!!!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I didn't like it because it was [slow]. It didn't have action. I thought it was WAY too short. The author could have improved by making a ending that had more action. It clearly was more of a love and sentimental book. Thank you.

Editorial Review:

Long ago, a young girl named Celia lived with her mother and a grumpy dog, Brumble, in a tiny house deep in the countryside. When Celia's beloved mother fell ill, Celia tried to make her feel better, but nothing seemed to help. "If only I could drink once more the sweet, sweet water of my childhood, my life would be saved," her mother cried. As Celia loves her mother very much, she sets out immediately with the complaining Brumble to find the precious water. Along the way, they meet several unhappy creatures: a wild child of the woods; a sobbing, wretched woman of the water; and a mad man of the mountain. Through kindness and enormous generosity, Celia manages not only to complete her quest, but to dissolve the sorrow of the three souls she has encountered on her journey.

This book is not only entertaining but enlightingly funny at times. This girl(Gilly) is of great courage although i would not have acted the same way in her position.

Editorial Review:

This selection portrays an orphan girl who has had to change foster homes many times. Gilly dreams of the day when Courtney, the mother she has never met, will come for her.

Editorial Review:

In 1942 Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, living in exile after the Nazi invasion of her country, spent the summer in Lee, Massachusetts, with her daughter and granddaughters. The following is based on a true story....

It#146;s summertime in New England during World War II, and a boy named William likes to imagine at bedtime that he is a brave knight fighting great battles to end the war. But in the morning he is always just William again, not big enough to contribute to the war effort like the rest of his family.

Then a real queen moves in just down the road: Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. William#146;s parents explain that the queen has been forced out of her country because of the war. Now William has his chance to do something. It may not be #147;war work#148; -- it#146;s more like peace work -- but that makes all the difference.

Susan Jeffers#146;s dramatic illustrations portray the compelling contrast between William#146;simagination and the real events in the story, which are based on an actual incident in John Paterson#146;s childhood. Visually stunning, with an evocative, poignant telling, this is the picture-book art form at its finest.

I thought this was a good story but there were some things about it I didn't like. For example, the godmother puts a spell on the princess at the begining of the book that prevents her from sleeping. However, in the middle of the book, the princess falls asleep after working with the peasants. I liked the begining of the book when the people were sleeping and the priness was awake. I was expecting the story to develop more around that theme but then it just jumped into different circumstances here and there. I liked the illustrations. The expressions on the characters' faces were done very well.

Editorial Review:

In this amusing, eloquently told story, created by Katherine Paterson specifically for artist Vladimir Vagin to illustrate with his beautifully detailed watercolors, there was born a wise little princess who was different from everyone else. Miranda had been granted the gift of being wide awake all her waking hours. Thus, unlike those before her, she was able to see that the peasants of the kingdom were overworked and starving while the nobles lived in selfish luxury. Miranda, with confidence and determination, forms an innovative plan to help her people overcome their oppression, and in the process reveals the power of words to vanquish ignorance and bring about change.

One of the Great Authors 5 out of 5 stars.

A book by Katherine Paterson is always difficult to judge. The main reason is because she has written a truly great book--"Bridge to Terabithia"--and a number of others that are nearly as great. Because of this, there is a tendency to be a tougher judge of her books as if every new novel should be a masterpiece. Fortunately, Ms. Paterson lives up to the challenge time after time.

I am constantly amazed at how well Ms. Paterson is able to write in the voice of young person, creating very realistic characters. Though a bit older myself these days, I can identify very well with Robbie as he stuggles with the difficulties in his life. I am particularly impressed with the depiction of Robbie's relationship with his father and how he struggles to understand him. Also, the difficulties he has in being himself while at the same time trying to be the son of a good man who has an important and public job in his hometown.

Though I don't think any good book is really gender-specific to an active reader, I can see where young boys would find this book speaking to them a little more. Still, I would encourage anyone with a love of good literature to read this book. It is a stong depiction of an interesting character.

Editorial Review:

Robbie is the son of a preacher in small-town America in 1899. People are saying that the world's going to end at the turn of the century, so Robbie decides that he'd better make the most of his life and have as much fun as possible - while he still can! But his outrageous behaviour does little to improve people's opinions of him, or his father. * Katherine Paterson is an internationally acclaimed author who has won the Newbery Medal (twice), the National Book Award for Children's Literature (USA) twice, and the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award

highly recommend 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very well-done bible story book, one of the best i've seen. The illustrations are gorgeous, and make an attempt to be accurate - eg the Israelites are camped in twelve tribes, three on each side of the tent of meeting, there are assyrian-inspired motifs under the assumption that these would have influenced the Moabites, etc. The retelling follows fairly closely the account in Numbers, but with the lengthy oracles consisely summarized, and Balaam's motivations particularly emphasized. It makes clear Peter's comment "Baalam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness." (2 Pet 2:15)

Editorial Review:

In this story from the Hebrew Bible, a stubborn donkey delivers an important message from the angel and helps her master, a powerful curse-layer, save the Israelites from the King of Moab.

Bridge To Terabithia review 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Bridge To Terabithia
Jesse Oliver Aarrons,Jr. and Leslie Burke are friends who made a kingdom called Teribthia. First, Leslie lead Jesse to a creek with a rope. Leslie started to swing across, so Jesse followed. When the kids enter Terabithia they get powers like to run very fast and to grab tree branches high in the sky.
Do Jesse and Leslie keep their kingdom a secret? No, because Jesse's little sister Maybelle, knows about the kingdom. Every day Maybelle would ask,"Can I go to Terabithia?" and they both would reply,"NO!"
Bridge to Terabithia is a great story! Some parts in the story are similar to the movie. But otherwise it is a great story. My partner in my Lit. Circle group says",It is a sad story, but the author usesmalot of creativity and imagination," I think the author uses alot of adventerous things also.
If you want an adentrous, imaginary, creative book, Bridge to Terabithia is the story for you!

Parental discretion advised 3 out of 5 stars.

Come Sing, Jimmy Jo deals with tough topics. Caution is advised when presenting this book to a child to read. The book offers innuendos that will be more understandable to adults than most children readers. These include an affair between his mother and her brother-in-law and a mother's jealousy of her son's success (more obvious to kids). But what will be most obvious to young readers is that James' daddy, who he idolizes, is not his father. This is revealed to him by a scary stranger who turns out to be his father.

Come Sing, Jimmy Jo Johnshon 4 out of 5 stars.

Katherine Paterson's book, "Come Sing, Jimmy Jo" tells a wonderful story, and really brings the characters to life. In this novel there are many triumphs and truths to overcome for one small, eleven year old boy. Jimmy Jo Johnson is really, James Johnson, a boy who was raised on a farm in West Virginia by his grandmother. Here he develops a gift of music. At the age of eleven he is a wonderful singer and guitar player. His family is in the business of singing and because of him they get a chance to play for a TV show.
After Jimmy Jo and his family find some sort of fame, things start to change. How his family members really feel about his success, and their singing careers. All in all, this book is a great book, which shows the true characters and feelings that often exist in family's who sing together. Jimmy Jo Johnson goes through a lot, with his mother, school, and when he finds out some interesting news. Jimmy Jo really finds out the people he can trust, and how life in the city really works. As his life changes, so does he, and along the way he discovers many things. I think his hidden friendship with Eleazer Jones is one of the best parts of this book.
End the end things work out for him, the best they can when any family faces problems. So without trying to give the whole book away, this was a very good read, and the author did a wonderful job, showing the real-life of this boy and his singing family

Editorial Review:

Joining the family singing group, eleven-year-old James is crowned ""Jimmy Jo"" by his determined mother and enters into a time of conflict when his talent brings fame to his country music family and another man claims to be his real father. Reprint. AB. C. H. SLJ.

Editorial Review:

This book explores with young readers what it means to be a child of God. Katherine Paterson discusses basic questions that she herself has grappled with: Where in the world is God? What about me? Where do I belong? Who is my neighbor? What is my purpose? Detailed illustrations complement the text.
