Editorial Review:

"To know things, for us to know things, is bad for them. We get to wanting and when we get to wanting it's bad for them. They thinks we want what they got . . . . That's why they don't want us reading." -- Nightjohn

"I didn't know what letters was, not what they meant, but I thought it might be something I wanted to know. To learn."--Sarny

Sarny, a female slave at the Waller plantation, first sees Nightjohn when he is brought there with a rope around his neck, his body covered in scars.

He had escaped north to freedom, but he came back--came back to teach reading. Knowing that the penalty for reading is dismemberment Nightjohn still retumed to slavery to teach others how to read. And twelve-year-old Sarny is willing to take the risk to learn.

Set in the 1850s, Gary Paulsen's groundbreaking new novel is unlike anything else the award-winning author has written. It is a meticulously researched, historically accurate, and artistically crafted portrayal of a grim time in our nation's past, brought to light through the personal history of two unforgettable characters.

Stunning 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Beautiful illustrations and vivid, descriptive sentences! I purchased this book to teach my first graders about descriptive writing. They were in awe of the book! Living in the south, most of them have never even seen snow or even heard of dog sledding. After having been dog sledding myself I knew I had to find a way to share the experience and this book was it! It is truly one of my favorites!

An excellent picture book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

DOGTEAM is a beautifully illustrated, as well as beautifully, simply, dramatically written book. It is not exactly a children's picture book, but more for lovers of dogs of all ages. Gary Paulsen is the author and retired dogsledder, who is most remembered for his young adult books such as HATCHET and DOGSONG. Ruth Wright Paulsen is his wife and the spectacular watercolor illustrator of the book. The picture book seems to be based on Paulsen's midnight adventures with his beloved dogteam, and readers will feel as if they are running alongside the dogteam, the sled whispering behind them. A great book.

Editorial Review:

On a moonlit winter night, a team of dogs pulls a sled, taking the narrator and readers on a wondrous ride through the snow, into and out of the woods. It is a ride you'll wish would never end.

Through this exquisite prose poem, Gary Paulsen shares the joy, the beauty, and the grandeur of the outdoors. With his joyous text and Ruth Wright Paulsen's exuberant and expressive illustrations, Dogteam is a celebration of nature, a dance that invites everyone to join in.

I thought that I could totally relate to this book because I am also his age and I thought it was awsome to compare each other. This book always kept you on the edge of what they would do next.It was a funny book and was a book with morals. If your the type that likes funny and true stories, this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

WHEN YOU GROW up in a small town in the north woods, you have to make your own excitement. High spirits, idiocy, and showing off for the girls inspire Gary Paulsen and his friends to attempt:

• Shooting waterfalls in a barrel

• The first skateboarding

• Breaking the world record for speed on skis by being towed behind a souped-up car, and then . . . hitting gravel

• Jumping three barrels like motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel, except they only have bikes

• Wrestling . . . a bear?

Extreme sports lead to extreme fun in new tales from Gary’s boyhood.

A Teenager in the Civil War 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In 1861 Charley is fifteen years old, living on a farm in Minnesota with his mother and little brother. Everyone has heard the rumor that there is to be a war, with those in the North fighting to stop the Southern rebels from doing damage to the country. No one is quite sure if the war is really going to happen, but Charley is determined to be a part of it if it is.

He convinces his mother that he can handle himself as a soldier and tells her the eleven dollars a month he'll be paid will help her out, and she agrees to let him go. He signs up, lying about his age so they will let him into the army, and begins his training.

At first things are horribly boring. The volunteer military spends much of its time sitting around, doing drills that don't use up their ammunition, and eating really bad food. Charley is considering deserting and simply going home, when finally his unit marches into battle.

Their first battle is a bloodbath--his unit tries to march across an open field while rebel soldiers shoot at them from above. Charley isn't sure what he thought a shooting war would be like, but it was certainly nothing like this. As the war continues and Charley is a part of more and more battles, he learns what war really is, and sees more than his share of the horror of it.

I liked that war wasn't glamorized at all in this book--the narrator spoke of the boredom between battles and the horror of the battles themselves. Nothing was made out to be fun about it. I also liked that Charley was so shocked and couldn't get over what he had seen. He was just a kid when he went into war and it wouldn't have been realistic for him to handle it well.

However, this book was a little too simplistic. It didn't give any of the nuances of Charley's thoughts and feelings, and didn't explore the feelings of anyone except this one main character. I would have liked a bit more depth.

Editorial Review:

Gary Paulsen introduces readers to Charley Goddard in his latest novel, Soldier's Heart. Charley goes to war a boy, and returns a changed man, crippled by what he has seen. In this captivating tale Paulsen vividly shows readers the turmoil of war through one boy's eyes and one boy's heart, and gives a voice to all the anonymous young men who fought in the Civil War.

A lovely story 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I found this at our local library and it's one of my 3 year old son's favorite books. I've now bought a copy because he knew it by heart after we returned our library copy. I've read other Gary Paulsen books and have enjoyed them as well, but this simple story with it's beautiful illustrations is one of our family favorites.

HONORING THE CYCLE OF LIFE 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Simply but movingly Gary Paulsen honors the cycle of life. Beginning with the earth, the seeds, and then the plants, he traces the making of flour and then bread.

Thirty-two illustrations in ripe harvest colors add a richness to his story.

Editorial Review:

In clear and eloquent language, Gary Paulsen pays tribute to a cycle of life--from seed to plant to tortilla. Workers till the black soil, operate the clanking machinery of the factory, and drive the trucks that deliver the tortillas back into the hands that will plant the yellow seeds. With Ruth Wright Paulsen’s expressive paintings, The Tortilla Factory brings forth the poetry and beauty of a simple way of life. “This title is beautiful to look at, and will also fit nicely into units on food, regional culture, art, and many other topics.”--School Library Journal

Driving Adventure 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Fourteen-year-old Terry's parents have always fought with each other a lot. Finally, though, they've had enough. One day neither one comes home, and in the evening Terry gets two phone messages--one from his mother, telling him to tell his father that she has all of her stuff and isn't coming back, and one from his father, telling him to tell his mother that he has all of his stuff and isn't coming back. Terry is left alone.

Terry doesn't mind at all the fact that he is by himself. His parents have always ignored him, so he doesn't really miss them. He thinks they will probably eventually figure out he is alone and one of them will come back home. And now he has the opportunity to do what he's wanted to do for a long time--build the car out of the kit his father has in the garage, the car kit his father has refused to build himself and has forbidden Terry to build.

It doesn't take Terry long to build the car, and with a set of wheels, he decides to go on the road, to drive from Ohio to Oregon to see an uncle he just barely remembers. Terry packs up the car and leaves, being careful to drive at the speed limit so he won't have to risk getting pulled over. Soon into his trip, he meets a hitchhiker who convinces Terry he would be able to help him on his journey. The man's name is Waylon and almost without intending to, Terry decides to bring him along.

Before long it is Waylon who is guiding the trip, advising Terry where to drive and teaching him many things he will never forget, about friendship, history, and himself.

I really liked the interactions among Waylon, Wayne and Terry. The three of them fit together really well and were able to learn from each other. I liked that Waylon was a mystery; Terry never quite knew what was going on with him, so the reader was never sure, either. I thought the ending left too much unresolved, though. I liked that the book was about a journey, but I also wanted to see the characters get somewhere.

Editorial Review:

Neglected by his parents, fourteen-year-old Terry Anders is used to taking care of things on his own. He even manages to assemble a car kit by himself. When the car is finished, Terry sets off from Cleveland to Portland in search of an uncle he barely remembers. Along the way, he is joined by a wise Vietnam vet who turns his journey into an adventure in learning.

Five Books in One 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It's a good thing they are all five together. This book was so good even I (mom) didn't want to stop reading it! I even cried at the end. My son (9 yrs) and I read this together. It is a very good book to read aloud because you can explain things if you need, and you (as an adult) can really add some drama with your voice. One night my son had a friend stay overnight (8 yrs) and he wasn't excited about having me read to them (especially in the middle of the book and all) but he was hooked after one chapter. I think this would be a good book for those who "hate" reading because the story just pulls you in and keeps you wanting to know what happens next. There is even a little bit of historical information and things to learn (but don't tell the kids!) I would recommend it to grades 3 and up. My 6 yr old had trouble sitting still for it.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen-year-old Francis is heading west in a wagon train on the Oregon Trail when he’s kidnapped by Pawnees. His adventures during the two-year search for his family teach him how to live by the harsh code of the wilderness, and give readers an exciting panoramic vision of the West at a time of settlement and of war with Mexico. Along the way, Francis meets up with Mr. Grimes, a one-armed mountain man, and later rescues Lottie and Billy, children abandoned on the prairie. Together the three encounter bandits, soldiers, storms, eccentric travellers, and discover an ancient treasure. But the real treasure lies at the end of the trail—Tucket’s home.

Danger on Midnight River 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulsen is an adventure story. Daniel was a strong swimmer, but the swift-moving current was too much for him. It was all he could do to keep his head above the surging waves. A couple of times he thought he heard someone yelling. But for now he had his own problemes. The river was freezing cold and it offered no way out

Cameron's Review 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever been thrown into a river in a car when it is sinking? Well Daniel has in Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulson. Daniel is with some of the boys from his school. Although he does not like them, he still helps them on their adventure. If you want to find out if Daniel survives you will have to read the book Danger on Midnight River.
The age group for this book is between 10 & 12. This book is very adventurous, and it is also helpful for camping. One of the weak points in this book is the ending. And one of the strong points is the crash.

Editorial Review:

Slow learner Daniel Martin escapes peer teasing by spending most of his time outdoors, and when a van crash plunges him and a gang of bullies in the river, Daniel must choose between saving himself and risking his life to save the others.

But they keep thinking of his face and didn't want to ask him what happened because they didn't want to be rude. He told them that he wouldn't be there in the morning so they could just leave. Morning came. Gary and Carl got their boots and jacket. There was a note on the table and it read had to go check the traps, fox man. A minute after they left they looked back and saw the fox man come out from behind the woodpile and went into the shack. They thought because he didn't want him to see his face
When they got back to the farm they got in trouble for being out but they were also happy to see them. About a two weeks later Gary decided to go back to the shack he was curios to see what happened to his face.
