This book is thrilling....but, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 9;too much violence. A psychic link between two 15 year old boys; one, almost a man, one a school kid struggling through adolescence. A young indian boy's spirit guides the kid to the place of spirits to release his restless soul.

Editorial Review:

Two boys, separated by the canyons of time and two vastly different cultures, face the challenges by which they become men.

Coyote Runs, an Apache boy, takes part in his first raid--the one that will usher him into manhood. He is to be a man for but a short time...

More than a hundred years later, while camping near Dog Canyon, fifteen-year-old Brennan Cole becomes obsessed with a skull that he finds, pierced by a bullet. He learns that it was the skull of an Apache boy executed by soldiers in 1864. A mystical link joins Brennan and Coyote Runs, and Brennan knows that neither boy will find any peace until Coyote Runs' skull is retumed to an ancient sacred place. In a grueling run through the canyon to retum the skull, Brennan faces the challenge of his life.

My Favorite Gary Paulsen book 5 out of 5 stars.

Can you tell me who had to survive on their farm during the winter? The only way you can find out is reading the book The Winter Room by Gary Paulsen. Well, it wasn't always like that for Wayne and his family. It was spring in Minnesota. Everything was good for Wayne who owns a farm with his family, but when it turned winter everything went wrong. Every winter Wayne is having trouble. He gets high fevers and coughs up blood. Wayne's little brother Eldon and Uncle Dan have to chop off the chicken's head in order to eat to eat for the winter, while his mother and father take care of Wayne. Then spring comes and Wayne gets mad at Uncle Dan. If you want to find out what happens read The Winter Room by Gary Paulsen. I think the author's message is to respect what you have and this is what Wayne learned because other people aren't as lucky as you. I give this book for the great book it is. Also it shows families working together.

Editorial Review:

The winter room is where Eldon, his brother Wayne, old Uncle David, and the rest of the family gather on icy cold nights, sitting in front of the stove. There the boys listen eagerly to all of Uncle David's tales of superheroes.

Then one night Uncle David tells the story, "The Woodcutter," and what happens next is terrible--then wonderful.

This book is horrible! Don't listen to your teacher or the other reviews on this site. The plot is strange, and oh SO boring. The is no humor. Wil's thoughts are so different from the average kids that it is totally impossible to relate to him at all. There is really nothing to be interested in. Where is the spark of excitement in other books by Paulson? In my opionion, you would be better off to go to the lake country in northern Wisconsin and learn about nature. (I have!) You would have alot more fun, too! Unless you love to read about some boy's profound thoughts about nature, life, mortality, morality and other subjects, this book isn't for you.

Editorial Review:

Every day, 15yo Wil Neuton gets up, brushes his teeth, leaves the house, and rows away from shore. He's discovered the island, a place where he can go to be alone and learn to know nature--and himself.Wil's only mission is to let go of the outside world. But the outside world refuses to let go of him. His family regards him as a puzzle. The town bully is determined to challenge him. And suddenly, even reporters know his name. He can confront them all, or he can embrace his solitude forever. Just one thing is certain now: Wil Neuton will no longer be relying on anybody but himself.

Call Me Francis Tucket
By: Gary Paulsen

The book I read was titled Call Me Francis Tucket. The author is Gary Paulsen. This book is a sequel to the story Mr. Tucket where Francis Tucket is captured by a group of Pawnee Indians on the Oregon Trail on his way out west. In this sequel Francis is surviving with a man named Mr. Grimes. Mr. Grimes is a man who rescues Francis from the Pawnees in this story. Mr. Grimes has been with Francis for a long time and teaches Francis lots of survival skills until something comes up and Mr. Grimes has to take care of some business. There are tons of events that happen in this story and it kept me on the edge of my seat. This book made me sad and made me laugh. This was a great book and I encourage anyone who wants to know more about what the west was like and for people who are interested in survival stories.

Editorial Review:

Alone. Francis Tucket now feels more confident that he can handle almost anything. A year ago, on the wagon train, he was kidnapped from his family by a Pawnee hunting party. Then he escaped with the help of the mountain man, Mr. Grimes. Now that he and Mr. Grimes have parted ways, Francis is heading west on his Indian pony, crossing the endless prairie, trying to find his family.

After a year with Mr. Grimes, Francis has learned to live by the harsh code of the wilderness. He can cause a stampede, survive his own mistakes, and face up to desperadoes. But when he rescues a little girl and her younger brother, Francis takes on more than he bargained for.

Editorial Review:

Newbery Honor author Gary Paulsen has long been an ardent supporter of books, reading, and literacy programs. To further the cause of ProLiteracy Worldwide, he asked prominent authors to write an original story; the only restriction was that each story was to include mention of a book. The result is this collection, Shelf Life: Stories by the Book. From Jennifer L. Holm's story of a girl on Mars trying desperately to return to Earth to Gregory Maguire's domestic intrigue; from Kathleen Karr's story of a thief in turn-of-the-century Chicago to M. T. Anderson's mysterious shipboard adventure; from A. LaFaye's tale of magical wonderment to Marion Dane Bauer's story of doing good, this volume provides a full range of reading for every taste. Other authors featured here are Joan Bauer, Ellen Conford, Margaret Peterson Haddix, and Ellen Wittlinger.

Sales of this book benefit ProLiteracy Worldwide, an international network with more than 1,400 programs in the United States and 79 partner programs abroad, whose mission is to change lives through literacy.

One of the Best Adventures! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was the first book I read in WORLD OF ADVENTURE. I read it during a vacation to my cousins' home! It had me hooked from start to finish. The action is good and there are several suspenseful moments as three kids try to escape a ruthless forest fire AND evil poachers at the same time. Read it!!

the best bok 5 out of 5 stars.

Escape from the fire mountain by Gary Paulsen is about 3 kids that ask there parents if they can go hiking. When they took the horse they got stuck in a fire. They got kidnapped by two guys in black they had guns and swords. I think that the theme is that you should never give up. Because they really never gave up escaping. One way they tried to escape was by running away from the place but then they got caught by the kidnappers. When they did escape with a four wheeler they ran out of gas. then they had to run the the oldest girls house. I really liked this book. I liked this book because Gary [the author] really gets me excited. The part that got me most excited was when they got kidnapped. I just wanted to keep reading because that part got my attention and it was exiting to read this book.

Editorial Review:

Thirteen-year-old Nikki Roberts tries to help two children trapped by a forest fire but finds her efforts blocked by poachers who want her to become one of the fire's victims.

He rides in trucks with the men.for me this was one of the best books I've read. I hope you enjoy it.

Editorial Review:

When?: World War II Where?: A cookcamp in the Canadian woods Why?: He's not really sure. One summer, a 5-year-old boy goes to live with his grandmother in a cookcamp. The camp is home to 9 men who are building a road through the woods. The boy misses his mother, but at the same time the camp becomes home--a special home where he learns to spit and rides the tractor. It's a wonderful summer, but then he lets slip to his grandmother about "Uncle Casey" and she writes seven letters to his mother. Seven letters that she mails "good and hard." A short while later, the boy returns home.

I love books that combine beautiful artwork with rich text. This is a winner in my mind! The words and pictures in this book make you feel like you're right there in the canoe, feeling and seeing all that the author describes. A dreamy little ride I'll enjoy taking again and again!

Canoe Days is entrancing! 5 out of 5 stars.

Opening this book is like getting into a canoe, taking up a paddle & gliding out into the beauty of a small lake for a day of peace & pleasure where the water & sky are one. Where neighborly deer, heron, mallards, foxes & raccoons come down to the water. A wonderful gift!

Editorial Review:

Opening this book is like sitting down in a canoe, taking up a paddle, and gliding out into the summer beauty of a hidden lake. In this picture book that is as refreshing and inviting as a perfect canoe day, a fawn peeks out from the trees as ducklings fan out behind their mother. Butterflies pause and fish laze beneath the lily pads. Ruth Wright Paulsen’s sunlit paintings and Gary Paulsen’s poetic text capture all the peace and pleasure of a day when water and sky are one.

The book is about a kid named Tucket. It takes place on a wagon train to California. For his birthday he is always moving to another place in the world. But this year they are going to California. But the next day it Tucket's Birthday so his mom made him a cake. Then he went to his dad out side the wagon train were he was controlling the horses. His dad got out a bra new shotgun made his size and had Tucket carved into the butt of the shotgun. His dad said he could try it out. So Tucket got out of the wagon train and loaded the gun. Boom!!!! The bullet hit a buffalo chip. Then a pack of Indians came and took him to the tribe. He tried to escape but they said, "If you try to escape we will cut of your hands. Then that night a guy on a hors with one arm said, "Come with me we are going to leave this place. So they left and escape.

When I read this book I gave it a 5 star. It was exciting and it was a cool adventure book.
I did not like how the Indians said, "I'll cut your arms off if you try to escape. But it was still really good. I loved how it was like an adventure and how he escapes. But the really cool part was when the guy shot his gun but he only had one arm. But he was really good.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen-year-old Francis Tucket is heading west on the Oregon Trail with his family by wagon train. When he receives a rifle for his birthday, he is thrilled that he is being treated like an adult. But Francis lags behind to practice shooting and is captured by Pawnees. It will take wild horses, hostile tribes, and a mysterious one-armed mountain man named Mr. Grimes to help Francis become the man who will be called Mr. Tucket.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen-year-old John Barron is asked, like his father and grandfather before him, to spend the summer taking care of their sheep in the haymeadow. Six thousand sheep. John will be alone, except for two horses, four dogs, and all those sheep.

John doesn't feel up to the task, but he hopes that if he can accomplish it, he will finally please his father. But John finds that the adage "things just to sheep" is true when the river floods, coyotes attack, and one dog's feet get cut. Through it all he must rely on his own resourcefulness, ingenuity, and talents to survive this summer in the haymeadow.
