This book was the best of the series! It showed what a great
athur gary paulson is. Francis and billy and lottie all pulled
together and survived. Francis even made it home to his family!
I think the end was the best part where it showed all of thier
lives afterward. Great job, Gary Paulson!

Editorial Review:

Francis Tucket, Lottie and Billy have survived extraordinary, hair-raising adventures in their quest to find Francis's family, lost when he was kidnapped from a wagon train on the Oregon Trail. Now they meet up with a British explorer, bloodthirsty soldiers, and in a tragic, heroic encounter, with Jason Grimes, the mountain man. Their way is made more treacherous still by the secret they carry, the ancient gold they discovered in a Spanish grave. In this final adventure they head home at last, and an epilogue tells what happens to them on the Oregon frontier.

Bringing The Outside In 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book truly brings nature to your fingertips. As a reader, I felt as if I was out in the wild, experiencing everything of which Paulsen wrote. With the descriptive settings and easy-to-relate-to tales, Paulsen makes the reader feel as if they have entered the woods along with the characters in the story. The essays on fishing and hunting in the northern woods are definitely his best work yet! This book is easy to follow, yet has very deep and interesting accounts.
I recommend this illustration to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors. If you want to learn about cold, winter morning fishing excursions, or hot, summer days in the woods, this is the perfect book to help fulfill your curiosity. Father Water Mother Woods is worth your time of reading and is definitely a classic.

Editorial Review:

Survival in the wilderness--Gary Paulsen writes about it so powerfully in his novels Hatchet and The River because he's lived it. These essays recount his adventures alone and with friends, along the rivers and in the woods of northern Minnesota. There, fishing and hunting are serious business, requiring skill, secrets, and inspiration. Luck, too--not every big one gets away.

This book takes readers through the seasons, from the incredible taste of a spring fish fresh from the smokehouse, to the first sight of the first deer, to the peace of the winter days spent dreaming by the stove in a fishhouse on the ice. In Paulsen's north country, every expedition is a major one, and often hilarious.

Once again Gary Paulsen demonstrates why he is one of America's most beloved writers, for he shows us fishing and hunting as pleasure, as art, as companionship, and as sources of life's deepest lessons.

In this novel White Fox Chronicles you are introduced to Cody and learn his nickname is the White Fox why? Well he has white hair like a fox. He also has the ability to learn very quickly. So he is stuck in this prison for kids who are American. Sort of like a Prison or a jail which is the same thing. The guards poison their minds thinking that the Americans rebels have no weapons like they only have sticks and stones. So Luther, an adult he and Cody want to break out. How? Well Luther works by digging cesspools. Now little do the Guards Know that Luther makes holes near the barb wire so that they can go in the cesspool and escape. Cody wants to break out with a prisoner of war, a rebel major, who Cody thinks can help him escape to a rebel base but at a cost Luther Gets shot. Do they get to the base or do the enemies catch him? Find out By reading the book like any body else!
Now my opinion of this book well...... It's GREAT!! If you're a Gary Paulsen fan and or enjoy Action, Get this book. This book is the best book I ever read. Since its 281 pages it is long, but don't worry you finish the book quickly since the book is so good and thrilling. Most action books start out with a slow start but this book starts strong and ends strong!

Editorial Review:

The year is 2057. Endless wars have torn the USA apart and enslaved Americans to the CCR, the Confederation of Consolidated Republics. Growing up in the wasteland of war has made 14-year-old Cody Pierce wise in survival skills, and now he's the White Fox, rebel leader of the children's barracks in a CCR prison camp. Once he escapes, life with the underground teaches him new skills in weaponry and strategy as he plays cat-and-mouse with the CCR. Every day brings him closer to capture, as well as to his goal: to return and liberate the children he left behind.

Tucket's Ride is about a 15 year old boy named Francis Tucket who's on a western adventure to find his parents. In Mr.Tucket,Francis gets a rifle for his fourteenth birhday. He drops back to practice shooting when he gets kidnapped by Pawnee indians. He goes to the indian camping grounds and gets rescued by a western man named Mr.Jason Grimes. He is one-armed man who teaches Francis to live by the way of the wilderness. After all that, Francis and Grimes part ways.On Call Me Francis Tucket, he saves 2 kids from dying.Their father died from a sickess called Chorela. Francis takes the two kids with him on his journey to find his parents on the Oregon Trail.

I really liked Tucket's Ride because it's so exciting and a really good book. I think that every good book should be read and reviewed. So I think you should pick up a copy of Tucket's Ride and get to reading.

Editorial Review:

Francis Tucket and his adopted family, Lottie and Billy, are heading west in search of Francis's parents on the Oregon Trail. But when winter comes early, Francis turns south to avoid the cold, and leads them right into enemy territory--the Mexican War of 1848. Francis and the children are captured by desperadoes, but loyalty, courage, and the element of surprise offer hope for survival.

A follow up to The Hatchett 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loved The Hatchett. This was a great follow up to what would of happened if Brian wasn't rescued before the onset of winter.

Entertaining and Informative 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Gary Paulsen has doen it again. Brian's Winter continues the original "Hatchet" story supposing Brian were not rescued before Winter set in. My children and my boy scout troop have enjoyed this immensely. I purchased the unabridged audiobook. Actor Richard Thomas, who portrayed Johnboy Walton on TV, narrates this excellent production. A small amount of appropriate music accompanies the narration. Paulsen's writing and Thomas' reading are so good that I think there must have been sound effects, but upon reviewing a few exciting sections of the story I found none; if used, they are used sparingly and never detracted from the story.

I'd previously imparted some my military experience to those I lead. However, I believe my children, my scouts, my fellow scouters (other scout leaders), and even I am better able to understand what real survival entails after reading (and now hearing) the Hatchet stories.

These books are the perfect couterpoint to Tom Hanks character in the movie "Castaway." Side-by-side, the two offer a superb illustration of the fundamental characteristics of survival, while each offering it's own perspectives on surviving within diverse circumstances.

Other survival movies and stories that I love include Walkabout coming out of Australia, Shackleton's Adventure in the Antarctic, and Paradise by Joan Elizabeth Goodman. There are also many real-life accounts online at

[...]

for example.

Editorial Review:

In Hatchet, 13-year-old Brian Robeson learned to survive alone in the Canadian wilderness, armed only with his hatchet. He was rescued at the end of the summer. Brian's Winterbegins where Hatchet might have ended: Brian is not rescued, but must build on his survival skills to face his deadliest enemy--a northern winter.

The Boy Who Owned the Scool 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Boy Who Owned the School by Gary Paulsen keeps you on the edge of your seat. Jacob Freisten, a middle school student, was an extremely unusual boy. Jacob does not like to be noticed by any of his friends and peers. He makes a fool out of himself in front of the girl of his dreams. The story leads up to Jacob getting embarrassed.
This book is a must read because at the end of every chapter it leaves the reader hanging. The end was unusual to read youll just have to pick up the book to see how unusual. There were so many exciting details.
Gary Paulsen is an outdoor man. All of his books are based around nature. He had to fend for himself because his parents drank too much. Once he walked into a library to get warm. If you want to know more about The Boy Who Owned the School check it out in your library

Editorial Review:

Jacob Freisten's goal in life is to go about unnoticed. He's perfect at gliding past the jocks' lockers and sneaking into his English class. That was, until now. If Jacob wants to pass English, he must work for extra credit on the stage crew of the school production of The Wizard of Oz.

Jacob, who is usually in a fog anyway, has the the job of running the fog machine. The problem is that Maria Tresser, the girl of his dreams, is cast as the Wicked Witch. Jacob's already made a fool of himself in front of Maria. How can he face her again?

The Monument 4 out of 5 stars.

Gary Paulsen's The Monument is a very eccentric story of a young African American girl with a leg brace in an orphanage. Rocky (the young girl) feels as if no one will ever adopt her and one day a couple walked in and said that they wanted to adopt her and she fills with a magical feeling inside herself. Rocky lives the life she never thought she would have.In this magnificent book you go on with her through everything that is as new to her as it is to you. By Mackenzie

The sleepiest monument 2 out of 5 stars.

The book I read was called The Monument by Gary Paulsen. TRhe problemof the story is that the boy in the story named Mick has to build a monument for a city in Kansas, but everyonein the town has to like it. The main characters are Mick, Rachel, and Micks dog Rocky. The rising action is whern mick is getting to the deadline and he has to hurry up. the climax of the story is when problems arise and by the time they clear up the deadline is already there. They make it but they almost dont. The resolution is when all the people see the art and admire it. This connects to me because last year we had to draw pictures and the whole school had to like them. We made it in time and we got to have the joy that mick got in the book.

Editorial Review:

Thirteen-year-old Rocky, self-conscious about the braces on her leg, has her life changed by the remarkable artist who comes to her small Kansas town to design a war memorial.

Caught by Sea 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Caught by the Sea written by Shahd El-Khatib
Gary Paulsen

In Gary Paulsen's book he learns to keep trying and never give up on your dream. I choose this book for many reasons for the first reason I love to read books about journeys on sea and of all the tough obstacle courses they have to go through. I have read another book by Gary Paulsen, Hatchet, I really enjoyed this book and I love how Gary adds great detail that makes you feel you are right their with the character. He also uses great descriptive words that help you see the pictures in your head. Gary has always wanted to own a boat and by wanting this he has to learn about the sea and how to sail.
Though Gary has never sailed a boat before he decides to buy his own boat and go on an adventure. By experimenting and trying everything on the boat he learns what many things on the boat do. When having a boat, the boat is not the most important thing to know about, you have to learn about the sea and winds. When sailing Gary notices the water gets very still but without knowledge he just thinks the water has calmed down but he was wrong, it was a big sign that a huge storm was coming. Gary is faced with a huge storm and has to try his best to survive it.
Every experience or accident on the boat really helped Gary out. He gets to learn from his mistakes and never does them again. When he got in the storm he notices that next time he should pull up on his sails and stay calm. Gary also should be equipped with all the materials he needs during a storm, and also to learn how to sail a boat. When buying his boat Gary knows that a lot of people try to trick you into buying a very bad boat for a high price, Gary figures out he has to check the boats very carefully.
"Another such wave could easily be the end of us. I had to do something, fix something, save the boat, save myself. But what"?. This statement shows you how Gary felt during the storm he didn't feel confident that he would make it alive. "That if you take a plank of wood from the ship it would sink". When shopping for boats Gary is faced with thieves trying to steal his money. "I met several people who wanted to help me sail a boat" many people were willing to spend their time and make sure Gary was okay sailing the boat by himself. "Calm winds, their must be a storm coming". Gary knows more about the sea so now he can predict when storms are coming.
Confident is a great word to describe Gary. He believes he knows a lot and is willing to perform any task. One of the biggest things that Gary learns is to always try his best and never give up. He has to be willing try his best even if he is in the worse situation in the world (sea storm). Gary also figures that you have to always be prepared for anything that might come across you. Gary knows he should have first learned how to sail the boat before he went on his first voyage. He also believes that it is possible for him to accomplish anything he wants to.

Editorial Review:

Another such wave could easily be the end of us. I had to do something, fix something, save the boat, save myself.

But what?

Gary Paulsen takes readers along on his maiden voyage, proving that ignorance can be bliss. Also really stupid and incredibly dangerous. He tells of boats that have owned him—good, bad, and beloved—and how they got him through terrifying storms that he survived by sheer luck. His spare prose conjures up shark surprises and killer waves as well as moonlight on the sea, and makes readers feel what it’s like to sail under the stars or to lie at anchor in a tropical lagoon where dolphins leap, bathed in silver. Falling in love with the ocean set Gary Paulsen on a lifelong learning curve and readers will understand why his passion has lasted to this day.
