Wonderful verse, but politically incorrect 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a fun read - I enjoy reading verse, and this flows nicely and doesn't feel forced. But there are sections that would now be considered politically incorrect. Combine it with "The Caboose is Loose" for a young train lover.

Ingenious story with enchanting drawings. 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a delight to read and to share this story with young ones. It's now a favorite of ours from the Bill Peet cannon. Though a child in the sixties, I was completely unaware of Bill Peet's work and 'Smokey' was the happy introduction to this author and artist.

Great Childrens Books 5 out of 5 stars.

The Author Bill Peet has the gift to spark the imagination of all children. His stories are amazing. There are over 30 kids books by him and I recommend them all!Smokey (Sandpiper Books)

My son and I love Bill Peet books. The author seems to have a terrific mix of humor, creativity and good artwork. This book is wonderful. The rhyming text is enjoyable to read. My son talks about things he sees in the artwork which he doesn't do with most picture books. Am really glad I picked up this book.

I used to check out this book when I was child. My friends and I used to race to the P section of the school library to check out all of Bill Peet's books. His stories are so fun and imaginative. The illustrations pop off the pages and are completely captivationg. I can't wait to read this story to my little boy. I know he will love it as much as I still do!

Every child should read this 5 out of 5 stars.

The illustrations in it are great and each animal will make a kid giggle with delight. Oozing with imagination this a book anyone can enjoy, and it really turned me on to reading as a child. Please get this for your kid.

My 6 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. It's quickly become her favorite, and we read it multiple times at bedtime every night. I find his writing and illustrations to be very imaginative, creative and clever. A fun book.

My personal favorite "No Such Thing" creature is the cross between the bear and the fox that has backward feet, walks on its hind legs, leaving tracks in the snow that lead the hunters the opposite direction from which he's actually walking.

Great book. 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

My 8 year old daughter has just discovered Bill Peet books and she loves them. She loves to read, but these are the first books that she has expressed an interest in keeping and collecting. She has even asked for his autobiography! Bill Peet has brought a light and an excitement for reading that is wonderful to see! Not only are his books entertaining, but they have a moral to the story that is appreciated by the reader.

My daughter, Kelly, wrote her own comments about the book. They are:

"I liked the part when Eli saved the bird. I also liked it when the birds saved Eli! It was a very, very good book! I liked it very much!"

She just can't wait to get the next Bill Peet book that I can find for her! It will definitely be the summer of Bill Peet at our home.

A book from my childhood 5 out of 5 stars.

While not aimed at someone my age... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I nevertheless found it quite fascinating and engrossing.

Peet is a self-professed reluctant student, especially of English classes, but he is nonetheless quite the good writer. Peet's illustrations add a lot to the pace and feel of the book and are a joy in their own right. His stories of life in Indianapolis before World War II will be interesting to any native Hoosier (as am I).

However, the most interesting part details his jobs at Walt Disney studios. His descriptions of how they made movies in the old days as well as the insider's look at Walt Disney himself are fascinating. Peet worked on several Disney movies, including Pinnochio, Fantasia, Cinderella (he created the lovable mice) and the original 101 Dalmations.

Peet brushes over his life after he left Disney a little too quickly. I would have liked to have read his descriptions of life in the publishing world as well. Also lacking is much history of his family life.

That being said, it was still fascinating, entertaining and totally worth the reader's time.

I give this one a grade of A-

A lesson about change 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a gentle tale about a woodland community who must find a new home because of encroaching urban development upon their land. It is a story about small creatures who must be brave and seek out a new safe place for themselves, despite the unknowns ahead.

The courageous decision of the group to leave their familiar home and embark on a journey to find a new "safe place" really speaks to my five year old who is nervous about the change from Preschool to Kindergarten this fall. She loves the "nice old brave raccoon," and says, "all the animals are so brave!" This book has helped show her that although transition can be scary, it can also be worked through; it has been comforting and reassuring for her.

I recommend this for any young child who is approaching a transition in their life.

Cute 4 out of 5 stars.

He's One of the Family 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Capy's got feelings. He's a ham. He knows how to have fun. He loves the other members of the family. The cats think he's a giant mouse and he takes advantage. When he grows up the family is faced with a dilemma. It's a charming story and the illustrations are delightful. My 6 year old daughter laughs with every page no matter how many times we read it. A sure hit with any kid who loves animals.

CHILDHOOD FAVORITE 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book was my favorite as a child. Capyboppy is so cute and loveable what child wouldn't like him? Every time we went to the library, I'd beg my dad to check it out and read it to me. Even as an adult in my twenties, this book is just as entertaining as ever and I still think of myself as my dad's little capybarra. I'm so glad copies of it are still avaliable so I will finally be able to have my own copy and one day read it to my children.

The real thing! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been working professionally on capybaras since 1981 and this book is a beautiful portrait of what a capybara is like. The drawings, the details of the capybara's behavior are exactly what I would have expected a capybara would be as a pet. The story is also very nice, very well written and fun. Excellent book.

Timeless and Touching 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

In this remarkably readable book, Bill Peet captures such an important lesson of life through his straight-forward writing style and exceptional artwork. The story suggests that while one's physical size might not matter all that much, perhaps the size of one's heart does. And you can never be too small to help someone else. This is certainly a wonderful lesson for children of all ages- toddler or adult. This is the second book in what I hope to be a full shelf of Bill Peet books in my home one day. I encourage you to read it.

Nice attempt at a lesson, but too many "stupids" for my taste 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is the story of an elephant who travels the forest doing good deeds for the grumpiest, most ungrateful group of animals imagineable. Eventually the elephant needs help and it is the tiny ant (the only creature with integrity besides the elephant) and his ant friends who come to his aid. So the "little things and small creatures mean a lot" theme is nicely presented. Possibly the point of the other arrogant animals is to show that the elephant helps out regardless of the thanklessness of the jobs and maintains his own good attitude throughout (a very evolved elephant).

This book was published in 1972 which explains why the word "stupid" appears four times, as well as the phrase "Dad blame it" (which can sound like "god damn it" to little ears who have heard it said in anger already). Years ago, editors weren't always as careful as they are today. I admit I am a bit puritanical about this but I personally would rather not hear "stupid" out of a 5yr old's mouth; children's literature should model the richness and beauty of the language. While this book does contain many great vocabulary words, I would have liked a version with some creative substitutions [maybe there is an updated version; just be aware if you get this version what is here].

If I read this book in class or at home I will "edit" a bit as I go. I like the intended meanings, but I won't be uttering "stupid" in front of bunches of kids anytime soon.

Bill Peet charms again! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you have yet to become acquainted with Bill Peet books, you're in for a treat! His vibrantly colorful illustrations are fantastic and his stories very engaging. I remember as a child how my imagination would run and frolick around in his wonderful stories and pictures.

Prewitt Peacock's story is no exception. It's a tale of a... well... a tail. Prewitt's tail is different from the other peacocks' tails, and he's subsequently an outcast. His tail isn't quite what it seems, however, and what was once his weakness becomes his greatest strength. Without being melodramatic, Bill Peet's story can teach a child that it's OK to be different - what sets you apart can make you special, too!

This book comes highly recommended for all kids (and their parents)!

Sooo funny!! 5 out of 5 stars.

What an amazing book!! I was laughing out loud when I read it!
My son, who's two, sat througth the whole reading! He loves the illustrations!! Bill Peet is so amazing. He has such an amazing way of breathing life into his characters.

When Prewitt's shamefully scraggly tail develops the appearance of a scary greeneyed monster, the other peacocks decide it has to go.

Not One of Bill Peet's Best 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book begins with a very dissatisfied looking Chester contemplating his fate as a young pig. Considering the likely direction of his life, he determines to act rather than to be acted upon. "But before I end up as so much sausage and ham, I intend to try and amount to something", he says.

This decision sets off a series of adventures, near misses, and mishaps that expose the proactive porker to the harsh and cruel world outside his farm. Soon his attempt to transcend his identity is replaced by the more immediate struggle simply to survive. This leads Chester to ultimately abandon himself to his destiny.

And then, when he has ceased all striving, the direction of his life changes, in a positive and unexpected way.

While this book has a happy ending, the world it portrays is dark and forbidding. Chester is spared as a result of chance rather than his own good works or grace. As a parent reading Chester to my children I found this world view to be quite disturbing. For this reason I'd recommend other Bill Peet books (for instance The Pinkish Purplish Bluish Egg) over this one.

Editorial Review:

Chester longs to be a performer in the circus, but the road to stardom is rocky until someone discovers Chester's true "worldliness."

One of Bill Peet's Best 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Written entirely in rhythmic rhyming couplets, excellently illustrated, The Pinkish, Purplish, Bluish Egg sets a very high standard in children's literature.

Myrtle (an appropriately named turtle dove) is working to overcome a depression following the departure of her offspring from the nest when she happens upon what appears to be a gigantic and very strange egg. With the assistance of some frisky young squirrels the egg is relocated to her empty nest and Myrtle commits herself to sitting on it until it hatches.

Our little dove, "The symbol of peace and of motherly love" endures the scorn of the other birds which intensifies after the egg does indeed hatch...

And once more the birds crowded Myrtle's treetop
To watch as the egg cracked apart with a pop.
Then a feathery thing poked his little head out.
Bewildered and frightened, he looked all about.
"Happy Birthday!" the dove whispered softly to him
And he felt more at home and hopped out on the limb.

At first all the birds were just too stunned to speak.
But finally a jay blurted out, "It's a freak!
Just look! The thing is half lion, half eagle.
I'm sure that it must be unsafe or illegal."

"No, no," said the owl, with a long, thoughtful look.
"It's a creature straight out of a fairy-tale book.
The thing's called a griffin. It doesn't exist,
But as a precaution I firmly insist
That we ought to get rid of the brute right away
Or it might grow up or cause trouble some day."

Myrtle chases the accusers away, names the little griffin Zeke, and begins a loving process of mentorship set against the relentless and mocking condemnation of the other birds. Eventually Zeke comes into his own as a heroic and powerful deliverer and earns the admiration and respect of his former antagonists - even the owl (though he can't resist taking one final shot).

"But I'm right," the owl said, "on one thing at least;
He doesn't exist, he's a mythical beast."
"Does he mean," worried Zeke, "that I'm not really here?
That most any minute I might disappear?"
"It's nonsense," scoffed Myrtle, "he's a silly old bird.
But if it makes him feel better, let him have the last word."

Editorial Review:

Everyone in the forest is afraid of Zeke the griffin until he does them all a very big favor.
