Loathing Beyond Words 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I don't exactly know how it has happened over the years but Tamora Pierce is the one author I loathe...with a fiery passion. I've tried reading The Song of the Lioness and Protector of the Small series. It's been years since I've read them simply because I found them to be utter junk. I loved Alanna but the series just slid downhill from there. They are completely immoral.

I suppose this would be OK except that Tamora Pierce's books are targeted to teenagers. I know lots of teens are sexually active but I don't think it's necessary to market books to them where the characters are morally depraved in that area. I really haven't found any other series in teen lit that seems, in my opinion, to condone sleeping around like the Lioness series does.

This series is utter junk.

Just thought I would throw in my two cents.

Editorial Review:

Alanna, the only female knight, sets out across the desert of Tortall and is

captured by desert tribesmen. Forced to prove herself, Alanna triumps in a

magical duel to the death, becoming the tribe's first female shaman. But

another battle rages in Alanna's heart--she must decide whether to marry Prince

Jonathan, her first love, or stay with her longtime friend George, the

handsome, charismatic King of Thieves. "Lively and enjoyable, with a strong,

vigorous heroine."--The Horn Book

Editorial Review:

In the final thrilling installment of Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small series ( First Test, Page, and Squire), our sturdy young heroine, Keladry of Mindelan (a.k.a. Kel), has finally been knighted. Never one to rest on her laurels, Kel champs at the bit, ready to tackle the horrific magic killing devices she was shown in the Chamber of the Ordeal during her knighthood initiation. The huge, insectlike machines, "made of iron-coated giants' bones, chains, pulleys, dagger-fingers and -toes, and a long whiplike tail," feed on the souls of dead children and are systematically killing off the citizens and warriors of Tortall.

Thoroughly disgusted to discover that not only is she not going to be assigned a combat post, but she has been placed in charge of a refugee camp instead, Kel, in her usual noble, stoic way, swallows her disappointment and sets out being the best refugee camp commander possible. Of course, destiny has a way of sneaking up on a young woman like Kel, and soon she is fulfilling the ordeal the Chamber set out for her... and then some.

Tamora Pierce once again draws her legions of fans into her story, blending humor, pathos, exhilarating battles, and gripping drama with a very real, very appealing protagonist. It's easy to make war appear black and white, a matter of good versus evil. Pierce finds the shades of gray. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter

okay ending 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The series was amazing over all but the very ending of it with her settling down was very unrealistic she had said from the very beginning she wanted to have adventures so yes I didn't like the ending. The rest of the book was good/okay.

Why is this series listed for 6-9th grade???? 3 out of 5 stars.

The 4th book is not suitable for 6-9th grades. I can see the appeal to 6-9 graders in the simplicity of the story. I am an adult that likes to read fantacy/magical fiction. My problem with this series is that the main character (Alanna) sleeps with the prince and 2 other guys in the fourth book.

A review from a girl 5 out of 5 stars.

This was the first series that my new friend ever recomended to me. I was skeptical at first but then I read the first chapter. Suddenly I was pulled into the world of Alanna. Finally my eyes stopped, frantic I searched for the next page of words. There were no more. I had reached the end of the first book. I sprinted into school the next day and begged my friend to bring in the second. This series was one of the best I ever read. I am really glad that the character's in these books appear in the Immortals series and Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen.

Editorial Review:

After achieving her dream of becoming the first female knight, Alanna sets

out to find the Dominion Jewel, a legendary gem which possesses limitless power

for good. But the evil Duke Roger has returned from the dead to wreak havoc on

the kingdom, and only Alanna has the power to prevent utter destruction. "Full

of slam-bang action...young readers will rejoice."--Kirkus

Ahmazing. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

About four years ago, I got this book for my birthday. And at that time, I had no interest in fantasy, so I swear it sat on my nightstand for weeks--no, MONTHS before I even opened the thing. Eventually, I opened it. And I read a couple sentences, put the book down and started on homework. Then the calling came, my mind started edging towards ideas of what would happen to Sandry. Why was she in a cell, what did she do with the thread? I ended up crawling onto my bed and reading it. I couldn't stop. I fell in love with Sandry and Briar, Tris and Daja. I loved how everybody seemed to clash and then smooth over. That is when I fell in love with fantasy, with Tamora Pierce.

I reccommend this book for anybody who wants a good fantasy. Just give it a try.

Editorial Review:

When four strange, and strangely talented, youngsters are brought to Winding Circle by master mage Niko they find themselves drawn together in a Circle of Magic—a circle that binds them despite their differences.Tamora Pierce, America’s most popular writer of young adult fantasy novels, weaves her own special magic in the opening volume of her wildly popular Circle of Magic quartet. Tammy herself narrates this recording, supported by a cast of nearly thirty actors, including Bruce Coville appearing as Niko. The rich web of voices bring this intricate story to life in a way that listeners will never forget.

Great Review by a young adult reader 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Well, the way I discovered Tamora Pierce's book 'The Circle of Magic; Tris' book' was by going into the library at my school. I was really looking for my friends and searched the library (probably making a lot of noise as the librarian kept scowling at me) I was about to leave, when I saw her get up towards me. I panicked so I quickly ducked behind a shelf to hide, as well as knocking off several books. I picked them up and the last one to put back was 'Tris' Book'which caught my eye and so I quickly read the first page, so far ao good! It was just the kind of book a girl like me likes, as well as a few boys, it was also about magic which would annoy my dad so I thought that I might as well take it out, the librarian had already gone off somewhere so I was in the clear. When I got back to my class, without the librarian biting my head off, I got back to reading it. It only seemed like a minute after I had lost myself into the first two chapters, and it was a fabulous book! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone. It was so great, I even failed my small Latin test. I was so into the story and plot, that I didn't even care!
The book is amazing! It's like Tamora Pierce hipnotizes you, so that you keep reading and find yourself tied into the characters lives! All I can say after I finished it is buy/borrow it while I re-read this magical fantasy again and again!!!

Editorial Review:

Merchant’s daughter Trisana Chandler is at the center of this second book of Tamora Pierce’s wildly popular Circle of Magic quartet. Tris and her friends from Winding Circle Temple are just learning to control their magic; now they must use it to protect the coast of Emelan from a deadly pirate attack. Tamara Pierce—America’s bestselling young adult fantasy writer—narrates this exiting and emotionally stunning recording.

A fitting conclusion to the series 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is the final chapter in Pierce's Circle of Magic series. When Briar discovers a street urchin with a strange new disease, he is quick to notify his teacher, Rosethorn. The sickness, later dubbed the Blue Pox, begins to spread and soon becomes a widespread epidemic. As hundreds of people die, Briar must work together with Rosethorn and Dedicate Crane to find a cure for the new disease. When Rosethorn catches the sickness, Briar races against time, desperate to find a cure before his teacher dies.

By the time this book rolls around most of the characters have been fully developed enough to be able to explore the plot more fully. As a result this book focuses mostly on the suspense of the race against time and on Briar's relationship with the usually aloof Rosethorn. Rather than dealing wholly with magic, the quartet of young mages is forced to face nature; in this case a plauge. This is by far the best of the series, it is worth it to read the other three just to get to this one. A true fantasy classic, don't miss out!

Editorial Review:

The stunning conclusion to the Circle of Magic quartet finds the young mages Sandry, Daja, Tris, and Briar facing their greatest challenge yet—a devastating plague that is sweeping Emelan.

major Tamora Pierce fan 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. Briar is my favorite charecter, so maybe that's why I loved this book so much. Unlike SOME people, I am not going to give away the ending and stuff. Briar, after training as a mage for 4 years, is traveling with his teacher, Rosethorn. while he is traveling, he meets Evvy,a girl who is apparently a stone mage. He must teach her how to controll her magic and avoid other gangs so he can live. A rich lady decides to kidnap Evvy, and Briar gets mad... Anyways this is totally my favorite book that Ms.pierce has written.

Good book 5 out of 5 stars.

In the second book of the Circle Opens quartet, 14-year-old Winding Circle temple resident Briar Moss and his teacher Rosethorn take a trip east to the city of Chammur. Wandering through a market place, Briar finds a street girl who is using powerful magic to polish stones. He decides to find her a teacher. But when gang warfare breaks out, he learns that the fiercest gang is looking for a stone mage to help them find hidden treasures, and he might be the only protection Evvy will get. When Briar hears that the enemy gang has a benefactor he knows that to stop the war he must stop the benefactor. Then Briar learns that the benefactor is also a murderer, he realizes that the fate of Chammurs gangs might rest in his hands. Exciting and entertaining, this is a perfect book for 5th-8th graders.

Editorial Review:

Plant mage Briar Rose has saddled himself with a teaching job. A young stone mage, Evvy, who he spotted working magic in the market - when she had no idea that she was doing anything more than polisihing crystals for a few coppers. Unfortunately for Briar - who doesn't want to teach anybody anything - he's got too much curiosity in him, and he can't just ignore it. He doesn't know what he's letting himself in for...

Editorial Review:

Readers who have followed the fortunes of Daja and her foster siblings in Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic and The Circle Opens sequences will not be disappointed by this continuation of Daja's adventures as a smith-mage. As her foster siblings Sandry and Briar struggle with their reluctant apprentices (Magic Steps, Street Magic), Daja and her teacher, Frostpine, settle into the northern Namorn city of Kugisko for a restful winter break. Not surprisingly, their illusions are promptly shattered, as Daja discovers that the twin daughters of her host have "ambient magic." As the discovering-mage, Daja is obliged to teach the fidgety girls the rudiments of magic. Meanwhile, Kugisko seems to have fallen into the hands of a ruthless arsonist, and Daja is determined to help her new firefighting friend, Bennat Ladradun, get to the bottom of the mystery. As always, Pierce's writing is both personable and thrilling. Kaja, a strapping, dark-skinned 14-year-old, is tremendously genuine; her powers seem to reflect inner strength rather than an arbitrary gift. An excellent, many-layered read. A great book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really great book. It's the first of a 4 book series called Protector of the Small and we think it's Tamora Pierce's best series. It's about a girl who overcomes adversity in the male dominated field of learning to become a knight. There is a lot of information about medieval times as well. I always say the easiest way to learn about things is through reading fiction. My daughter read a lot of Tamora Pierce books a year or two ago and she still say, "they talked about that in such and such Tamora Pierce book."

Editorial Review:

To the great joy of her many fans, Tamora Pierce with this book begins a new saga of Tortall to add to The Song of the Lioness Quartet, the Immortals Quartet, and The Protector of the Small tetralogy. At the center of each of these books is always a strong and resourceful young woman who masters the arts of swordplay and knightly warfare in the magical medieval country of Tortall. Alianne, or Aly, daughter of the warrior queen Alanna the Lioness, has all these skills, but also a delicious sense of humor, which serves her well when she is chosen by the trickster god Kyprioth to serve as his secret agent and a slave for a year in the embattled Copper Isles. There the dark-skinned natives, or raka, have been conquered and crushed by the laurin, light-skinned people from the mainland. The burning raka resentment is fueled by prophecies of a twice royal queen who will free them, aided by the "wise one, the cunning one, the strong one, the warrior, and the crows." Just how each of the colorful characters and Aly herself fit into this prophecy and Kyprioth’s tricky plan keeps readers guessing. Aly plots to show her skill at spying as she flirts with the god and is courted by Nawat, a crow transformed into a handsome young man, who is puzzled when she rejects his attempts to mate-feed her with grubs and ants.

The pages of this long but fast-paced adventure zip by, enlivened by intrigue, skirmishes, comedy, romance, and lots of dramatic clothes. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell
