A Favorite for Sleepy Time 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book has become very special in our family and is our favorite bedtime book. The author takes a child through the nighttime with animals and people in the garden, the city, on the ocean, in her own home. Easy to read or to read to, easy to memorize, and such calming and gentle verse that you'll find yourself repeating it to yourself at day's end: "Up above the earth so far, Hang half a moon and one whole star, Hang one whole star and half a moon: Nighttime will be coming soon.

Bed Time Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great book to read kids before bed time. It's about a girl named Susan as she sleeps in her bed at night. It describes a lot of the things that are going on at the same time in the world like animals in the woods, Johnny playing his saxophone, and a boat on its way to dock. It has the rhythm of a lullabye and is a great nighttime book. I have nothing to add to this book because it's perfect the way it is. So I'm giving it 5-STARS and I recommend you read it, too!

Up above the earth so far
Hang half a moon and one whole star
Hang one whole star and half a moon;
Nighttime will be coming soon.

And while a young girl sleeps, nighttime deepens all around her -- in the woods and garden, on the ocean, in the city, and on the porch, where her parents sit.

Crescent Dragonwagon's soothing, evocative poem is brought to life by the lush artwork of Jerry Pinkney in this bedtime treasure.

Brer Rabbit may not be as big as Brer Bear or as strong as Mr. Man, but no creature has ever had sharper wits. Young and old alike will laugh out loud at his outrageous antics as he once again outmaneuvers his old foes.

God Bless the Child 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Accompanied by a CD of Billie Holiday singing "God Bless the Child" the reader is given a visual interpretation of the proverb "God blessed the child that's got his own," in which the illustrator has displayed the happenings of the Great Migration. Repeating the chorus of the song, we glimpse inside the lesson of making a way for yourself.

"Mama may have,
Papa may have,
But God bless the child
That's got his own!
That's got his own."

The illustrations capture the words in the story and serve as a tribute to our past as well as to those reading now who are committed to self-reliance and not only making do with what they have, but striving to become better. GOD BLESS THE CHILD is a wonderful book that I think children would enjoy, but more in a read-aloud atmosphere combined with the playing of the CD enclosed.

Editorial Review:

The song "God Bless the Child" was first performed by legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday in 1939 and remains one of her enduring masterpieces. In this picture book interpretation, renowned illustrator Jerry Pinkney has created images of a family moving from the rural South to the urban North during the Great Migration. This extraordinary book stands as a tribute to all those men and women who dared so much to get their own.

Watership Drowned 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A curiously uneven pairing of Jerry Pinkney's dark, textured illustrations with Nancy Willard's inaccessible poetry. Marketed as a book for children ages 4 - 8, Willard's words are too erudite for her audience, Pinkney's drawings too lacking in qualities apt to enrapture their targeted age group.

Presumably an attempt to marry what was best in both contributors to this sleeper of a book (Pinkney is a two-time Caldecott Honor recipient, Willard a Newberry Medalist), the final product falls flat.

Not recommended unless you are trying to put your children into a sleep characterized by dull, unimaginative dreams.

Poetic License for kids 5 out of 5 stars.

If adults are allowed to dream, to appreciate art and nature and to muse about poetry not quite understood, why not a book for children that allows them the same. Leave regimented rhyme to the institutional school books. This book makes a child think and appreciate.

The Man Who Kept His Heart in a Bucket 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Not many stories deal with "feelings" or"emotions". Some stories may evoke strong feelings--and thisis no exception--but very few consider "if our hearts are in the right place." In this enchanting, beautifully told tale, a man keeps his heart tucked safely in a bucket until a smart and pretty girl "steals" it away. She tells him that she will keep it for him until he can answer a riddle. Solving this intriguing riddle requires that the man visit a series of people in his village--a baker, a musician and a poor farmer's wife and child. In each case, the man and the people he encounters became richer for the experience and find the magic of giving, sharing and loving. At the end of the story, the man finds that his heart has been in the "right place" all along and that he no longer needs to hide it in a bucket. Not only does he find his heart but is able to easily give it to the girl who stole it from him at the beginning of his "journey". A charming, heart-warming and memorable tale that is bound to be a classic! A lovely story that speaks to the heart. The illustrations are beautifully wrought and evoke a "once a upon a time"less quality. A true story treasure!

Editorial Review:

Ever since his heart was broken, Jack has kept it safe from harm by carrying it in a bucket. One day a magic carp leaps from a pool of water, turns into a beautiful maiden and steals Jack's heart, challenging him to solve a riddle to win it back. His search leads Jack to discover the surest cure of all for a broken heart. Full color.

Editorial Review:

Do vegetables grow in trucks? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Adan, a Puerto Rican-American boy, lives on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He hates rainy days and, while working in his parents' bodega, he learns from the postman that rainy days are great days - they are yagua days. Before he can ask what a yagua day is he finds out that his family is taking Adan's first trip to Puerto Rico. On his trip Adan meets an extended family members he had never known, learns the farming tradition of people and experiences yagua days for himself.

Jerry Pinkney creates a distant setting of lush vegitation and exotic fruits and vegetables using only pen and ink. The images are light, black and white markings on a simple cream background. While the plot is simple, it is not predictable. Martel's characters are well developed and seeing the mountains of Puerto Rico for the first time with Adan is both informative and exciting. This culturally conscious book tells an authentic story representing the language, values and traditions of this group of Puerto Rican people. I highly recommend Yagua Days for use as part of a school lesson or for a leasurely read.
