A Summer in a Black Girl's Life 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A wonderful story of Ernestine, a young inner-city Black girl who dreams of taking a trip on the train. The story, appearing to be set in the 1950's or early 1960's, takes the reader into the daily life of Ernestine, exposing her hopes, dreams, and fears as she interacts with her friends and family. Simple activities and how life without many financial resources was lived during the time period are brought to life. A great book for Black History month or cultural awareness lessons.

Editorial Review:

Ernestine, the young heroine of Back Home, and her great-aunt Odessa often ride the trolley to the railroad station to watch the trains from North Carolina come in. When Ernestine finally travels on a train to the place of her birth, everyone in her family sacrifices something to make her trip possible. Gloria Jean and Jerry Pinkney together depict family warmth as bright as sunshine. Full color.

Perfect, except for the bit with the blood 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A wonderful little childrens book - if you don't mind a blood drenched last chapter. My little boy woke up screaming for a solid week. Stay away from that, is my advice. Otherwise, a light-hearted romp through a pumpkin patch of delights.

Editorial Review:

With his boisterous friends and rowdy enemies, Brer Rabbit is on the road to adventure. He gets a job and figures out how to get paid--twice a day! Times may change, but Brer Rabbit is forever! 32 illustrations, 8 in full color.

Editorial Review:

The children of the world are tired of doing what they're told. A mischievous dream whispers to them that they should stop listening to their parents, and adults everywhere are in for a whole heap of trouble. But it doesn't end there. Next the dream visits all the animals, and tells them they should do whatever they want, too. Soon animals are invading fine restaurants, taking up all the space on the couch, and leaving the water on when they get out of the shower. Can Albidaro, Guardian of Children, and Olara, Guardian of Animals, put everyone back where they're supposed to be?

The wit and lyricism of Julius Lester and the gloriously lush paintings of Jerry Pinkney unite to create a beautiful, humorous original fable that's sure to delight their fans.
