Early Pinkwater One of His Best 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

First published in 1981, the "Tooth-Gnasher Superflash" has all the ingredients that go into a "Pinkwater." These include silly sounding names such as "Mr. Popsnorkle" (other books include a "Mr. Plumbean" and "Mr. and Mrs. Submarine"); unusual visuals (Popsnorkle floats sideways over his worn out Thunderclap-Eight); improbable situations, exemplified here by the Popsnorkle-driven Superflash turning into a turtle, a dinosaur, and a flying chicken; and, most famously, Pinkwater's signature dry, subtle-yet-silly humor:

"'Look!' shouted the five little Popsnorkles.'The Tooth Gnasher Superflash!'" (NOTE: We see a picture of the Popsnorkles and a salesman wearing an orange suit standing next to a light blue racing vehicle.)

"'It is a pretty color,' said Mrs. Popsnorkle. (It was light blue)."

"'May I show you the new Tooth-Gnasher Superflash? We only have one left.'"

"'Is it the light-blue one?' Mrs. Popsnorkle asked."

That interchange may go right past some little ones' heads, but like the best kids' humor, it can be appreciated at many levels (think "Bullwinkle"). As mentioned above, when Popsnorkle takes the wheel and starts pressing buttons, the Tooth Gnasher Superflash transforms itself into a series of impossible (and sometimes extinct) animals. The exuberance of the Popsnorkles combined with the increasingly fearful face of the salesman in the back seat create a farcical scene made even more spectacular by the Superflash's many forms (though it always remains a nice light blue, even when it looks like a big elephant).

The very perplexed salesman takes "lots of money," and the Popsnorkles drive off in the Tooth-Gnasher. The last paragraph does not disappoint, as Pinkwater manages to inject yet another surprise in this creative, silly, and fun book. Highly recommended for almost anyone that can appreciate the Pinkwaterian style; this book may very well make a fan out of you! As there are several books by Daniel Pinkwater (some of the later ones beautifully, whimsically illustrated by his spouse, Jill Pinkwater), you'll be in for a treat.

Editorial Review:

The Popsnorkle family test drive the Tooth-Gnasher Superflash, pleased with the car's ability to turn into several different animals.

Very short. 3 out of 5 stars.

I wanted this book because I read a review that said it had a "liberal, left wing agenda." Sadly, I didn't see that, but maybe you had to be there.

A young girl creeped out by Santa Claus invents her own holiday gift-giver (Potato Claus) and writes a play about him that she and some friends put on for the class. There is a strange obsession with potatoes.

This book is really short with big type and lots of color illustrations, so there isn't much room for the usual Pinkwater weirdness. It's still kind of nifty, though.

Not our pick 1 out of 5 stars.

My 4 yr old son received this from his preschool teacher as a Christmas present. Both my husband and I had the same reaction to it when we read it to our son...disbelief! We are open to our sons learning about different cultures but this book is not one which will be kept in our home. Come on... Potato Claus!?! He doesn't care if the boys and girls are good or bad!?! I personally like letting my children know they'd better be good, for goodness sake! This book made me realize that I'd better make sure the books they are getting are appropriate and not leaning towards the left-wing liberal agenda.

I heard Daniel Pinkwater reading this book on NPR and going to recommend it to friends with children aged 7-12, it's truly a book children and adults can enjoy together. Seymour's travels with the goose, recipes for Corn Flake Soup, all memories I'm going to have for a while.

Happy 1st grader 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought three of these Werewolf Club books for my [...] son who just finished [...]. They are the first chapter books that he can read on his own, and he likes the stories so much and is so proud that he can read them, that he sat the rest of the family down and read a few chapters out loud to us. Some of the words are too difficult for him (e.g. except, solicitors), but for the most part he can figure them out independently. The chapters are very short (1-2 pages, usually) and this seems to help him not feel overwhelmed. I recommend these for anyone who likes silly but fun stories, and who is ready for easy chapter books.

Editorial Review:

Would you buy a used time machine from this man?

Mr. Talbot has taken the Werewolf Club to London! Unfortunately, they made the trip in Uncle H. G. Talbot's unreliable time-and-space machine, and they've arrived in 1890 London -- where it might be a tad difficult to buy the 212 double-A batteries they need for the machine to get them home. The Werewolf Club's goose is cooked -- and not for a good old-fashioned English Christmas dinner.

While they're figuring out what to do, the young werewolves have plenty of time to take in some sights usually missed by your average tour bus, and even help legendary detective Sherlock Holmes thwart the notorious Jack the Schlepper's attempt to steal the crown jewels from the Tower of London. There will always be an England -- but never one like the Werewolf Club's England.

I agree - how can this be out of print!?!! We love to give the miners different voices, and it's great that Aunt Lulu is so confident and loves her dogs so much. Pinkwater is so talented!!!

... 4 out of 5 stars.

Daniel Pinkwater read this on Chinwag Theatre and it sounds wonderful. What child's imagination wouldn't be captured by an Aunt who has no car but instead has her dog sled in New Jersey? As the owner of a middle aged Siberian, my daughter is fascinated by dogs who work.

The illustration are what we have come to expect from the Pinkwaters. Light, minimal, but sufficient. The dogs are sweet and personable. The Aunt is eccentric but someone any adventureous child would love to have visit.

another Pinkwater classic 5 out of 5 stars.

Author and illustrator Daniel Pinkwater dedicates this book to *good* librarians everywhere, and creates an unforgettable character in Lulu, librarian to some rather boring miners in Alaska until she grows tired of the grind and moves to New Jersey with her sled dogs Melvin, Louise, Phoebe, Willie, Norman, Hortense, Bruce, Susie, Charles, Teddie, Neddie, Eddie, Freddie and Sweetie-pie. But what to do about transportation? Aunt Lulu has an intriguing solution.

Don't forget, Daniel Pinkwater writes affectionate, hilarious books for adults too!

Editorial Review:

Tired of working as a librarian in Alaska, Aunt Lulu takes her sled and her fourteen Huskies and moves to Parsippany, New Jersey.

Hilarious story of bad bear antics. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Daniel Pinkwater writes BAD BEARS GO VISITING, a story of one Irving and Muktuk, who are cheating each other at cards when polar friend Larry drops by to visit. But the Bad Bears can't resist getting into trouble when they sneak into the zoo to pay their own visit to friends in this hilarious story of bad bear antics.

Three Silly Chicks Review 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks - Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids.

Irving and Muktuk are the kind of bad bears kids love to love. They cheat at cards, escape from the zoo, and generally make mischief every chance they get. When their friend Larry introduces them to the concept of "Visiting," these Bad Bears have to try it for themselves. They visit the Beachball family. Of course, they bring a present (the bush from the front lawn makes a lovely gift), snack on doughnuts with sardines, and play indoor volleyball until the zoo keeper and police arrive to take them back to the zoo. (Again.)

Irving and Muktuk are wry, playful, and silly. But best of all, they are sneaky. As Daniel Pinkwater writes, "Though polar bears are very large, they are among the best sneakers in the animal kingdom." Who knew? Jill Pinkwater! That's who! With the simplest of lines, she captures the mischievous heart of this daring duo and makes us want to join the fun! And there's plenty of fun to be had. BAD BEARS GO VISITING is fun, plain and simple.

Editorial Review:

Irving and Muktuk are cheating each other at cards when their polar bear friend Larry drops by for a visit. The bears eat cake topped with little fishes that Larry has brought, play a spirited game of volleyball, and afterward chat pleasantly until Larry goes home. "Visits," Irving and Muktuk decide, "are nice."

The next evening, when all is quiet at the zoo, the Bad Bears sneak out to pay a refined visit of their own. When they arrive at the home of the Beachball family, things—as usual for the baffled bruins—get out of hand.

Young Adult Novel 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is about a group of kids, the Dadists, that are completely different from everyone else they know and make their debut by slipping piles of cards with simple messages like "Kevin Shapiro Rocks!" into the boys and girls bathrooms and polishing a toilet seat to be exhibited in the gym. The Dadists tell stories about a boy named Kevin Shapiro who never gets things to go his way, and they are thrilled when they find out that there is a boy named Kevin Shapiro at their school. I like this story because everything in it is completely random. This story has a weird plot and is just my style. Extraordinarily hilarious, this is a book that I recommend to all comedy lovers everywhere!

Deeply twisted - inherently sick. Joyfully so. 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought this was one of the best possible reasons to have children -- or to have friends that have children -- just to able to give them a copy of this book. What fun! What boundless fun

Editorial Review:

The Wild Dada Ducks members cause all sorts of mischief around their junior high school, but although the boys are not bad, they like to pretend that they are true dadaists with unintentional and irrational behavior.

Excellent learning resource 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought my children this book, and they *love* it! Join Big Bob as he takes a visit into town, shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, and help him correct the calamitous spelling and grammatical errors he finds on his journey. From the "Donna" Kebab shop, to the "Fish and Chip's" shop, it's fun every step of the way. Laugh as he tries to rent "Fried Green Tomatos at the Whistle Stop Cafe" from the "DVD's and Video's" shop, wince as he reads a "Smile, your on camera!" sign above the till, and grin, as he ultimately ends up at the "grocerys store" to buy his "Thanksgiving Potatos". I just hope that the author's middle name isn't a spelling mistake as well!
Well worth a "reed".

Editorial Review:

Life can be difficult when you are big. And Big Bob is very big. He's lucky to find a friend in Big Gloria, who, like Big Bob, is a vegetarian. What's their favorite food, even for Thanksgiving dinner? Potatoes! Potatoes! Potatoes!

Werewolves, beat poetry, borgelnuskies - the stuff of life. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

One of my favorite books of all time, which may seem like an odd thing (It's in there with Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood and Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake)but no book to me so accurately captures the wonder of wandering around any city late at night, eating at skanky diners (both horridly magnificent and magnificently horrid) and having the sort of strange encounters that only seem capable of happening at 2a.m.

Werewolves, beat poetry, borgelnuskies, The Mighty Gorilla -- Mr. Pinkwater tells the truth, but tells it slant. Trust me, it's all in there. I just hope it comes back into print some day (I xeroxed my copy at the Royal Oak Public Library.

It may not be life changing but it sure is good 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow. I've read most of the Daniel Pinkwater books and this is one of my favorites. How can you go wrong with characters called Rat, Heinz, and Uncle Flipping? His obsession with strange names and chareacters and fast food definitely shows up in this book!
If you liked this book you would probably like the book Alan Mendelson, The Boy from Mars.
CHEERS!

ROTFL 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a really really really funny book. Really. There are not that many books that will make an adult and a child snort milk out their noses, but this is one.

It is also a very useful book to defuse any bedtime terror left over from inappropriate television viewing. If your child is scared of vampires, this book will make it better.

Cute book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 2 and 4 year old grandsons love this and zing one liners from it at me all the time. This and Where the Wild Things Are are their favorites.

As for adults, I think that the kid in the story is a lot like many of us were, so we can see ourselves doing the things he does. It takes us back to a childhood we either had or wish we had.

Editorial Review:

After watching a horror movie on TV, Jonathan decides he wants to be a vampire. He dresses up in a cape, puts salad oil on his hair, and even wears fangs to school. This amusing tale will have young readers in stitches, while easing any fears of "things that go bump in the night."
