A Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a childhood favorite of my family. I can't believe it's out of print. It's a great book for kids (and adults) of all ages.

It's a Shame that This Book is Out of Print! 5 out of 5 stars.

I first bought this book in the late 1980s when looking for good read aloud books for my youngest brother. It made me laugh out loud reading it in the bookstore so I bought it for him and he enjoyed it immensely too. It's almost impossible to read this aloud without cracking up, with the absurd story (dad brings home a cat that keeps growing bigger, and then he brings home progressively larger animals to compare it to) and especially the brilliantly weird names (Lunchbox Louie, King Waffle, Papercup Mixmaster, Exploding Poptart). This is a classic of zany kid humor that is great fun for adults to read over and over, too. I'd love to buy it for my little nieces and nephews---please bring it back into print!

Out of print? Say it ain't so! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the all-time best children's book ever written. No, it's the all-time best book ever written, period. I bought my first copy in 1987 to read to my baby daughter, and the first time I started to read it, I laughed so hard that I couldn't finish. The kid didn't find it all that amusing, but her nickname still, though she is a Junior in college, is Wuggie. The names of the characters are absolutely ridiculous, and I could so relate to Lunchbox Louie, the dad who is the only one who seems to notice the obvious. I've bought hundreds of copies of this book to give away over the years, and I like to keep a few on hand for that purpose, and now I can't. It's just not right.

Editorial Review:

The family's new pet kitten grows at such a ridiculous rate that the father must bring home animals to compare its size each day.

a great introduction to the quirky world of Daniel Pinkwater...... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think that this was the first book I read, written by the great humorous author, Daniel Pinkwater. Though, THE WORMS OF KUKUMLIMA could be read to young children, it is also appealing to adults. That is the beauty of most of Pinkwater's writing. He succeeds in appealing to his younger reading audience without patronizing them, and still entertaining his older readers who might be reading along.

Ronald is a quirky young guy whose eccentric uncle, Sir Charles Pelicanstein, takes him on a quest to Africa, seeking super-intelligent worms who reside in Kukumlima. Of course, chaos occurs, but it is very entertaining chaos. This is the kind of chaos you will stay up nights reading about, just because you can't put the book down. The first time I read this, I saw it as some sort of surrealist movie, playing in my mind. I could hear the voices of all of the characters, including one particular worm that they encounter (!). I won't devulge more plot details, so as not to ruin the experience of reading this book for you. I was honestly surprised that not more people had reviewed it before me. it's probably one of Daniel Pinkwater's best and underappreciated novellas. Highly reccomended!!!

Editorial Review:

Ronald accompanies his grandfather, the salami snap magnate, and the world famous explorer Sir Charles Pelicanstein, on an expedition to Africa to search for the intelligent worms of Kukumlina.

More than just a simplistic book about sharing 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is my favorite kids book and really, it's much deeper than the usual 'morality lite' type of sharing message. I have read "Doodle Flute" to most of our nine kids dozens and dozens of times. We never tire of it. Some of my kids have adopted weird kid, Mason Mintz, as their personal hero because the guy has guts-- real guts to be exactly who he is, no apologies. I have read "Doodle Flute" to high school catechism classes teaching the tpoic of human dignity. The highschoolers loved it and discussed it at legnth. Daniel Pinkwater infuses some solid truths about human dignity into this book in a nearly brilliantly understated way. Our family owns at least a thousand books, hundreds of childrens books. "Doodle Flute" should be on every book shelf-- children's and adults' alike.

A pretty good book 4 out of 5 stars.

Review by 6 yr old. A good book about sharing. Teaches you about being nice and the importance of friendship.

If you only buy 1 kids' book ever... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Doodle Flute should be the one. Pinkwater has an ear for what matters and an eye for making it clear on a wide variety of levels. The book appeals to the very young kids it gets rated for, but picks up a fresh audience again in the early teens. As an adult, I loved it the first time I read it aloud, and every time since. Mason's stock, "Because that's just the kind of guy I am," has long since become a catch phrase in our family, and stands as a great summation of the book. Read it. Your day will immediately improve!

Shaggy Dog Story 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The Pinkwaters' extraordinary combination of dry and silly humor begins with the sentence, "Mr. and Mrs. Submarine were sitting at the kitchen table on a rainy morning," and never lets up (in fact, it just gets wilder). The pictures are just as engaging: The opening line is accompanied by beautiful bright colors and a composition that manages to show both the interior of the Submarines' house and the large backyard.

Into this backyard, on this rainy morning, come a variety of wet , hungry animals. Mr. and Mrs. Submarine give shelter--and corn muffins-to a cat (there's a beautiful picture of a cat surrounded by autumnal leaves, with bright green eyes gazing into the house), a huge shaggy dog, a tawny brown horse, crows, a wild coyote, chickens (who wisely stay away from the coyote) and then:

a wildebeest , Ludwig van Beethoven (who speaks in German, translations provided), the United state Marine Band, and more! It gets as crowded and flabbergasting (and perhaps even more surprising) as the Marx Brothers' stateroom in "A Night At the Opera."

Jill Pinkwater's lustrous, fun illustrations are brimming with excitingly vivid colors and a senses of animal energy. Daniel Pinkwater, as always, is a master storyteller, and his quietly outrageous humor will make you one too. Very highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Mr. and Mrs. Submarine sit in their cozy kitchen on a rainy morning. One by one, a variety of animals shows up at their door hoping to get in out of the rain: a cat, a dog, a horse, and a wandering wildebeest, among others. Then there are humans who appear in their yard hoping to find a dry place themselves, including Beethoven and the U.S. Marine Band. A new picture book that will have Pinkwater fans howling with laughter. Full color.

Rediscovered Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

Bought this book used after hearing D.M. Pinkwater read a portion of it on NPR. It has become a favorite read-aloud book in our home. It is charming and hilarious-- fun for the young and the young at heart.

Charming line drawings augment the story of a domesticated, yet wild, moose that becomes head waiter at a forest restaurant.

A welcome assistant 5 out of 5 stars.

I just love this book. I read this book when I was a child. It had so many comical parts that even now as an adult it will be one that I read to my children and include in our home library.

This story is about a blue moose that starts out being a nuisance to a restaurant/inn keeper and ends up a welcome assistant.

Children will delight in this book.

Wonderful, funny and warm classic 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a fantastic, creative children's story that I treasured as a young boy 30 years ago. It resonates with warmth, coziness, and subtle humor that always made me chuckle. It's a perfect bedtime or story-time book, cozied up with the kids and everyone sharing in it with a huge smile on their face. Imagine a huge moose, frozen blue from the Canadian cold, barging into a little restaurant in northern Maine one day and asking for a job as head waiter. My dad would ham it up with the voices, and now I do the same for my own kids. I was thrilled to come upon a copy on Amazon, as my original copy was lost over the decades. This book is a treasure, and now MY kids love it as much as I did.

About a really funny dog from outer space who can talk to people and other animals. This dog is really smart and it prefers to eat food that humans would eat, especially roast duck with all the fixings. It made me laugh a lot.

Excellent. 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

LASSIE, GO HOME -- MUSH IS HERE!

Now that Kelly Mangiaro's family has moved out of their apartment into a house, she figures her parents will finally let her get a dog. Instead, her mother gets a job, and Kelly gets a baby-sitter.

Then Kelly comes upon Mush, a mushamute -- a breed not recognized by the Westminster Kennel Club, or by anyone else for that matter, possibly because mushamutes come from the planet Growf-Woof-Woof, in the solar system of Arfturus. Mushamutes can talk, tell time, cook up a storm, and even clean up the kitchen afterwards. Who needs a baby-sitter when there's a mushamute around? Now if only Kelly can persuade her parents to let her keep Mush....

Wicked Fun 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Inspired by "The Portrait of Dorian Gray," this book retells Wilde's classic story for children. The illustrations are enjoyable, if a bit gross. The storyline feels a lot like something that Pugsley and Wednesday Addams would do. The mischief that Morty and Ray get into is appropriate for 1st through 4th graders - if your kids are going to do it anyway, you might as well impress upon them the effect poor behavior has on one's character early. The moral of the story is left for parents to impart as needed, or for the reader to infer on his or her own.

I bought this as a gift for a friend's son, a 1st grader, and he really enjoyed it. I will probably buy another to add to my son's library in a few years - I may buy it now and just enjoy it myself until he gets old enough to appreciate it.

Editorial Review:

A classic horror movie on TV inspires Morty and Ray to paint a picture of themselves for all the wrong reasons. You may be tempted to cry out, "Stop!" But the boys are having too much fun to listen.

Bubbling with questions of pickle juice and Art, Daniel Pinkwater's riotous tale tells of nice boys heading for trouble and friendship put to the test. Visual virtuoso Jack E. Davis pulls out all the stops to give readers a wild ride.

Were this a movie, it would win an Oscar.

A must read book! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

THIS BOOK MUST BE REPRITED! I remember having a teacher read this book to my class and it was really funny. Who would ever dream up about a blue moose who does the things that he does except Pinkwater. We need more books like this one! I would love to have a copy of this book and of THE BLUE MOOSE RETURNS. Everyone should read this book.

My favorite book of all time! 4 out of 5 stars.

Blue Moose is an excellent short book for kids to learn on. I first read it at the age of 12, when I was reading quite well, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I haven't met any other Blue Moose fans other than my friends and myself, and that disappoints me.This book should definitely be reprinted. I am not a tame moose!!!

This book is beneficial to having a stable Canadian child. Even if you are an American you and your child will enjoy this book. The Blue Moose is a character that still to this day makes me comment"Iam not a tame moose". Pinkwater shows a wonderful sense of humor and immagination that you don't see too often any more.

Wingman is slinkster fun, but also has a poignant message. 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

When I was 11 years old, my Aunt Mary bought me Wingman, by Daniel Manus Pinkwater. I am greatful. Disguised in Mr. Pinkwater's funky, quirky, belivably flawed, beautiful human characters is a story about family, heritage, prejudice, and the power of the imagination.

The story centers around a young Chinese boy who loves comics. His father is supporting the family after his mother becomes ill. He is picked upon in school. Soon, he is playing hooky to read his comics in the "saftey" of a bridge span. It is there we meet Wingman. He swoops the boy off to ancient China. He is tall, powerful, handsome, invincible. . . and Chinese.

The book shows powerfully, without being preachy, values such as cultural pride, and the feelings of being "different." It is an incredible read, whether you are 11 or 70.

A beautiful book for kids 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm sorry to see that this book is out of print - I had to get my copy from a library that was getting rid of their copy. This will be a biased review, because this was the first book I ever read by myself from beginning to end, at around age 6. At that age, I thought it was magic. I carried the book around until it fell apart.

"Wingman" is a beautiful book. Pinkwater tells a story that has a lot of pain in it - the loneliness of the main character is intense and real in the same way it might be in a book by Dostoevsky. There are a lot of stories about not fitting in, about being different, but "Wingman" tells its story with no sentimentality, and with no attempt to soften the facts for children.

There's a lot in this book to counterbalance that pain, though - this is a story about imagination. Pinkwater leaves the figure of Wingman as a mystery that lingers after the book is done. The main character manages to weather his hard times, and his gifts find a place in the world.

Pinkwater's drawings are done in a comic book style and they're a perfect match to the story.

Editorial Review:

To escape the problems of being poor and Chinese, Donald begins to cut school to climb the George Washington Bridge where he meets Wingman, a sort of Chinese Superman.

Space travel, black holes, river rapids, singing, sledding.. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This author reminds me of two authors: Richard Brautigan (for adults) and Daniel Pinkwater (for kids). Just like Brautigan and Pinkwater, Pinkwater gives us a comic tale mixing realistic dialogue and surreal situations. This kid Steve is miffed because his mom is redecorating the house, and he doesn't like it until she shows him some spaceship wallpaper. You would not think a story about wallpaper could be exciting, but think again! Steve and his mom paper his bedroom with it, and that night, Steve has amazing adventures with some remarkably carefree spacemice, exploring the planet of the Bunnies ("don't do anything to get them mad"). Boldly illustrated by Jill Pinkwater. The hardcover jacket says "ages 6-9," but I am 43 years old and I really enjoyed this book.

Editorial Review:

Steve hadn't liked it when his mom had started changing everything at home. She had gotten rid of his table and chair, and hadn't even asked him if he wanted his bathroom stool. But the new spaceship wallpaper in Steve's room was...well, fantastic. When Steve went to bed that night, he found out just how fantastic it was.

Another riotous ride through the heavens, piloted by veteran space captain Daniel Pinkwater, and his trusty co-pilot, Jill.
