Oh the places these goats go! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A tale of three escaped goats on an adventure. Though it follows the style of going on a bear hunt, the goats are not hunting anything. Nonetheless, they find an ogre who scares them back home. The text has a comfortably repetitious style that will invite listener participation. Karen Woodworth-Roman

Surprisingly Delightful 4 out of 5 stars.

I love Patricia Polacco but when I read this story, I thought it lacked in originality. The bear hunt has been done again and again, and for me, Polacco is so much more wonderful and orginal than that. However, as the goats approach the fair, and then the funhouse mirror, the fun really starts, especially for my 2 and a half year old. He can't get enough of this book! As the pages turn and the ogre gets nearer, he can hardly contain himself! It is so much fun!

Editorial Review:

The famous Polacco goats are back! In this playful interactive chant, three mischievous little goats find their way out of the gate (squeak, squeak, squeak!), over a bridge (click, click, click!), through some mud (squish, squish, squish!), onto a carousel (um pah pah pah, um pah pah!) . . . and right into the path of an angry ogre! Of course, they are happy to turn right around and run straight back over the path they traveled, until at last they are back home again, safe and sound.

Patricia Polacco’s color palette is bright and springlike in her second goat adventure (G is for Goat) for very young readers.

How sweet !!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I saw this book title I just had to have it for my Granddaughter. Her name is Emma Kate and she is now 6 months old so I guess grandma will enjoy reading it to her until she is old enough to enjoy it herself. And...I loved the ending !

A delightful read-aloud book 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a reading specialist and I shared this book with several classes. They loved it! It is a sweet, fun book.

The name says it all 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book because the title is my daughter's name , so had to have it. The book itself is OK. I'm not in love with the artwork and the story was pretty basic. At first couldn't tell if it was being told from the elephants perspective or the girls. Finally decided on the elephants. After reading the authors notes I understand the reason for the book. Anyway only bought it because of the title. We read it ofton but not one of our favs.

Editorial Review:

That adorable Emma Kate has an imaginary friend. They walk to school together every morning, and sit together in class. They sleep over at each other’s houses, and do their homework side by side. They even have their tonsils out and eat gallons of pink ice cream together. But a hilarious twist ending will have readers realizing there’s more to this imaginary friend than meets the eye!

Another of Polacco’s immensely popular younger books, Emma Kate is a wonderfully original story of pretend play and real friendship.

Another fun Polacco book. The sequel to the Graves Family. Teaching kids that different is great. Wonderful fantasy unit read aloud.

Absolutely Hilarious 5 out of 5 stars.

If you've read several of Patricia Polacco's books before, you might think this book would be along the same lines as her other books. You're in for a surprise. This is an awesome book, filled with great illustrations and a great story. It is a great book to read around halloween, but it could also be used in thematic units dealing with family, or being greedy or rude. I laughed out loud several times while reading this book, and I know you will too.

Editorial Review:

A new adventure for Patricia Polacco’s Graves Family.

When the Graves family goes camping, so do all their ghoulish sidekicks—bats, spiders, and even their Venus flytrap. Yet nothing can prepare them for their latest companion: a fire-breathing dragon. The Graves family knows they’ve got to get rid of the dragon—especially after the giant beast accidentally soaks all the town’s fireworks just before the big Fourth of July celebration. The explosive solution is pure fun.

I loved this book! As I was sitting in a children's library reviewing picture books, I tried to keep myself from bursting out in laughter as I read In Enzo's Splendid Gardens. This book is so fun and creative, and filled with a humorous, rhythmic storyline. The pictures are excellent as well, perfectly matching each hilarious episode. This book is a must read for young and old alike!

Enjoyable Page Turner! 5 out of 5 stars.

Enzo's Splendid Garden was a hillarious book. I think I enjoyed it as much as my daughter. We laughed and couldn't wait to see the next event come to the page. I recommend for the person who's had a bad day or just wants to keep the good day coming.

Polacco is superb, as always 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

In Polacco's rollicking, urban version of "The House That Jack Built," the story begins innocuously enough with a tiny bee landing on a tree near an outdoor cafe. A little boy leans over to examines the bee and eventually--of course!--all hell breaks loose, spiraling out of control from this original, innocent action.

Kids will love the rhyming, rhythmic pace of the book, and adults will appreciate the tiny, out-of-the-way details such as the fountain cherub eventually coming down out of her stiff stance at the center of spraying water and helping everyone else at the restaurant gawk at what's going on--not to mention the fact that the original offending bee appears throughout in every single picture.

Polacco has--no surprise here--done it again!

Editorial Review:

A series of hysterically chaotic events begin when a bee stops on a tree in Enzo's Italian restaurant, causing the boy who looks at it to drop his book and inadvertently trip a passing waiter who is carrying spaghetti.

I read this book as a read aloud to my class and they couldn't get enough. They loved the illustrations and the story. Patricia Polacco is one of their favorite author and this book shows you why.

Patricia Polacco is the best! 5 out of 5 stars.

Two weeks ago, I was introduced to Patricia Polacco and "The Graves Family" when the PSAJ at my Library in Chagrin Falls, Ohio came out of the Staff Room laughing. I asked her what made her so joy-filled and she showed me this book. Well, I read it and since then have read every other book in our Cuyahoga County Library System that Patricia has written. I have ordered the book for several friend's grandchildren as well as one of my own. Patricia is a wonderful, creative author and illustrator and simply a quality human being. At 67, I am still a kid at heart and right now, it is my pleasure to know about her, read her books and introduce her and her life work to others.

Editorial Review:

When the Graves family quietly moves into a house in Union City, things start to happen in a big way. They paint their house red, their dinner moves on their plates, and some of the townspeople start acting like cats! The Graves family is a little "different," but this doesn’t stop Sara and Seth from becoming their friends. And sometimes when you accept people’s differences, they can end up creating a unique and special place of their own.

Great literature kids relate to! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I'm a speech-language specialist who is very picky about which books I use in therapy sessions. Polacco's books draw kids into the very identifiable characters. We spent 3 weeks on the story, reading it, retelling it and drawing a story map about it. Great around Halloween! Highly recommended for grades 2-5.

Swamp Thang 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a magical ghost story/young romance /comedy by one of the very best children's book writers, Patricia Polacco. Here she creates a wonderfully drawn `folk tale' about a group of kids and their almost encounter with the ghost of Quicksand Bottoms. Polacco is at the top of her narrative and artistic game.

On pages 3-4, for example, Polacco foreshortens the perspective, in a manner that evokes Grandma Moses, to show the dozens of towns `folk" making Halloween preparations. (Patricia Polacco is also Dr. Patricia Polacco, with a doctorate in art history). On the very next two-page illustration, Polacco returns to her familiar loveable loopy style. She is a master at conveying emotion and character just through splashes of color accenting expressive broad faces.

The story is both leisurely and suspenseful, as the Halloween contests and pre-adolescent William's attempts to show Hester a thing or two (i.e., woo her) play against the looming presence of the legendary ghost. William can't seem to get anything right, and he gets "mad as the dickens." Polacco uses colloquialisms to good effect, especially with names: There's Hester Bledden, the object of his affection, as well as Mr. Stillwater, Lula Mae Cobb, Eulaylee Tester, Boof and Bertie Schiffer, all portrayed without condescension.

Williams' big opportunity arrives that night "as an eerie blue light came up out of the swamp." Polacco's drawing of the swamp gas--or is it?) give us some spectacular blue tones and evanescent effects.

The exciting, well-plotted denouement gives frustrated William a chance too show his bravery and win the heart of Hester, as they share a plate of ice cream. This is a beautifully drawn and written story, and is one of the best of the Polacco's many superb books. Teachers, parents, other adults, and kids will also want to check out her fun and informative website.

Editorial Review:

The annual Halloween picnic at Mudsock Meadow takes a zany turn as William finds his enjoyment ruined by pain-in-the-neck Hester Bledden and by the arrival of the ""ghost"" of Titus Dinworthy, whose appearance terrifies the celebrants.

Una buena leccion. 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this to my second grade bilingual students and they made an immediate connection with Patricia and her difficulty in reading and how she was bullied by other students because of this difficulty. They definitely felt empathy with her situation. They were then deeply impressed to find out that she is the one who writes children's books.

Mommies Say Shhh! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The second I saw this book in my professor's office I became jealous of babies everywhere. I've been dying to give this to my cousin's year-and-a-half old sweet pea because I cannot think of a more precious story (well, Hug and MAMA: a TRUE story, in which a BABY HIPPO loses his MAMA during a TSUNAMI, but finds a new home, and a new MAMA certainly give anything a run for its money).

With the understated grace and meadowside whimsy we've come to rely on from Polacco, Mommies Say Shhh! takes a peek at some young children working and playing at a farm in all its acre-ous (it's a word) glory. We watch them go about their chores and knitting accompanied by their animals' sounds. "Dogs say buff, buff, buff. Sheep say baa, baa, baa. Geese say honk, honk, honk. Bunnies say nothing at all."

Little ones will love the bright colors and silly animal antics which provide even more story than the text. Readers will love the comforting rise and fall cadence of noisy animals and silent, twitchy-nose bunnies. Sure to be a repeat.

Editorial Review:

Goats say "Maa-Maa-Maa." Birds say "Cheep-Cheep-Cheep." Horses say "Neigh-Neigh-Neigh." Rabbits say nothing at all! But when all of these animals get together and raise a honking, braying, neighing ruckus, what do mommies say? "Shhhhhh!"
With the simplest of texts and a variety of fun animal noises, Patricia Polacco has created another read-aloud winner for the preschool crowd.

Editorial Review:

Trisha has learned the "sweetness of knowledge" from her grandfather. Eager to taste that sweetness for herself, she is excited to start school. Soon she will know how to read! But things don't go perfectly. Even though she is a wonderful artist who makes beautiful pictures with her crayons, Trisha can't figure out how to read. The other kids make fun of her, calling her terrible names like "Dummy." Then one day, a new teacher arrives. Mr. Falker doesn't think Trisha is dumb at all. In fact, he knows he can help her learn to read. Award-winning author Patricia Polacco based this story on her own childhood and the heroic teacher who helped her overcome her learning disability. Children, parents and teachers alike will be deeply touched by the moving tale, which is enhanced by the heartfelt narration of Kate Forbes.
