Pizza, Pigs, and Poetry: How to Write a Poem

This new Prelutsky book is absolutely fabulous! Every year I engage my middle school students in creating an extensive "Poetry Package" as one of their major projects for the year, so this book has been a GREAT resource! THANK YOU, Jack Prelutsky! THANK YOU, Amazon.com!

Editorial Review:

Have you ever tried to write a poem about a pizza? How about a pig? How about a pigeon, penguin, potato, Ping-Pong, parrot, puppy, pelican, porcupine, pie, pachyderm, or your parents?

Jack Prelutsky has written more than a thousand poems about all of these things—and many others. In this book he gives you the inside scoop on writing poetry and shows you how you can turn your own experiences and stories about your family, your pets, and your friends into poems. He offers tips, advice, and secrets about writing and provides some fun exercises to help you get started (or unstuck). You'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at the ingredients of some of his most popular poems. If you are a poet, want to be a poet, or if you have to write a poem for homework and you just need some help, this is the book for you!

Love this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I had a soft copy for my two kids and they trashed it from use. I was thinking about it when we decided to theme the office programming area the "Dragon's Lair". So I bought two copies, one for my daughter and one for our artist. My daughter immediately remembered the book and it is now read 1-2 times a week for her. My artist draws dragons for fun so she is about as happy as my daughter!

My Son's favorite Dragon book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. When my son was a preschooler I would read this to my son at bedtime cover to cover. Now as a second grader, he is reading it himself and also used one of the poems for a poetry reading at his school.

As an adult I too enjoy the poems. They are well written with a lot of imagination. I love this book as much as my son does. If you looking for a great book about Dragons this is a must. It also makes a beautiful gift for other children. A must have for every childs library.

Editorial Review:

An "excellent collection....Prelutsky and Sis...bring to life so many sorts of dragons: the large, the small, the ferocious, the technological, the gentle, the ominous, and the disconsolate. There's a `just right' quality to the verse that makes it a pleasure to read the words aloud. Their sounds fit together with seamless craftsmanship and their sense rewards listeners with humor, imagination, and occasional poignancy....Because it appeals on so many levels, this is one poetry book that won't siton the shelf for long."--Booklist.

For All Ages 5 out of 5 stars.

A Pizza the Size of the Sun was by far my favorite book of poetry when I was a child. I memorized "I'm Usually a Speedy Horse" for an audition for a play once. Recently, I saw this book in a store and immediately snatched it up (along with an "It's Raining Pigs and Noodles" umbrella). Reading through it again, I found that the poems aren't just for children. Granted the themes maybe be childish, the language itself is more sophisticated. Some poems are very adult (not in an obscene way, of course) such as "I'm Drifting Through Negative Space" and "When I Am Full of Silence." I adore this book once again and I recommend it for all. Five stars, six if I could!

Editorial Review:

Jack Prelutsky is widely acknowledged as the poet laureate of the younger generation. (And many people would happily see him crowned with no age qualification.) The New Kid on the Block and Something Big Has Been Here are household words wherever there are kids.

Here is another wondrously rich, varied, clever - and always funny - collection. Meet Miss Misinformation, Swami Gourami, and Gladiola Gloppe (and her Soup Shoppe), and delight in a backwards poem, a poem that ever ends, and scores of others that will be changed, read, and loved by readers of every age. The Prelutsky-Stevenson duo is irresistible. Whether you begin at the beginning or just open the book at random, you won't stop smiling.

Perfect for teachers 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an awesome book. The poems are very clever, funny and appealing to kids, along the lines of Shel Silverstein. The difference is the very sophisticated vocabulary that Prelutsky uses. I use a poem per week from this book for my remedial middle school students for oral reading fluency, plus I create our weekly vocabulary word list from words from the weekly poem.

Editorial Review:

Something big is right here!

It is this book of wonderful, funny new poems by lack Prelutsky. If you've read The New Kid on the Block, you have some idea of the treat ahead. And if you haven't, all you have to do is start reading!

Here are four vain and ancient tortoises, a rat of culture, Super Samson Simpson, a meat loaf that defies an ax, five flying hotdogs--and many, many more people, animals, and things that are destined to become part of the lives of everyone who loves to laugh. Say them, chant them, learn them by heart, or just read them--Jack Prelutsky's poems are incomparable.

The long-awaited companion to The New Kid on the Block. "A wealth of funny new verse from a favorite poet. Prelutsky's comic muse is at its best here....Another winner."--Kirkus Reviews. "Prelutsky has done it again."--School Library Journal

I only recently discovered Jack Prelutsky and would just like to say, "where have you been all my life?" His books are a delight to read, especially aloud, because of the spectacular words he chooses. It's like the verbal equivalent of the best dessert you've ever had.

Enjoyable for children and adults, great humor 5 out of 5 stars.

My kids, girl age 8 and boy age 11 both enjoy this cd. Its has the right amount of absurdity and humor to appeal to both of them. It has 56 tracks, three total books. Behold the Bold Umrellapant, What a Day it was at School and Scranimals for an hour long cd. Your kids will want to look at the books while they listen, at least the first time. If your kids like Shel Silverstein, they will like this cd as well.

A Total Delight for Young and Old 5 out of 5 stars.

Shopping for a birthday present, I came across this book. I have never been big on poetry for children (don't ask why; I guess because I didn't like it as a child), and I almost didn't open this book. What a mistake that would have been.

Every single page of this wonderful, fanciful and subtly geographical collection is better than the one before. Here we have a poem that extolls the virtues of Indianapolis (one doesn't see too many Indianapolis poems!) in a ridiculous but so- sweet poem. There are elephants in trees, and frogs in suspenders, and all the other lovely ideas that children can accept and love without question.

The drawings by Petra Mathers make the book. I can't list a favorite; each one, so colorful, so fanciful, and so very endearing, compliments the poem it illustrates.

What I like best about this book, however, is that it encourages a love of the English language without ever letting the child know it is doing so. The wonderful tongue-rolling combination of words, the silly (but not really) images the words evoke, and the simple joy in every poem are tailor-made to enchant a child and encourage him or her to read more.

Highly recommended!!

Editorial Review:

Twenty-eight rollicking rhymes from the undisputed master of hilarious verse for children, Jack Prelutsky, are matched with enchanting illustrations by Petra Mathers in this uproarious poetry collection. From Minneapolis to the Grand Canyon, Tuscaloosa to Seattle, families across the country will love this irresistiblemodern classic!

Crazy Animal Fun 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

During the story a boy and a girl went on a trip the Scranimal Island. They saw a lot of animals such as the RHINOCEROSE, a group SPINACHICKENS, a caravan of CAMELBERTA PEACHES, a lonely POTATOAD, one CARDINALBACORE, couple of HIPPOPOTAMUSHROOMS, talkative PARROTTERS, a sweet PORCUPINEAPPLE, fierce BROCCOLIONS, a nimble ANTELOPETUNIA, an unsuccessful STORMY PETRELEPHANT, content TOUCANEMONES, then the vicious RADISHARK, a yellow BANANACONDA, the fast OSTRICHEETAH, a shy PANADAFFODIL, and the playful MANGORILLA and his friend the ORANGUTANGERINE. The extinct AVOCADODO wasn't smart, strong, or fast, it is no wonder you are extinct.
This book is my favorite picture book because all the animals were mixed up. The craziest animal was the PORCUPINEAPPLE because it was cute and the poem was funny.

Editorial Review:

We're sailing to Scranimal Island,

It doesn't appear on most maps....

Scranimal Island is where you will find the fragrant Rhinocerose, the cunning Broccolions, and if you are really, really lucky and very, very quiet, you will spot the gentle, shy Pandaffodil. (You may even hear it yawning if the morning's just begun, watch its petals slowly open to embrace the rising sun.

So put on your pith helmet and prepare to explore a wilderness of puns and rhymes where birds, beasts, vegetables, and flowers have been mysteriously scrambled together to create creatures you've never seen before –– and are unlikely to meet again! Your guides –– Jack Prelutsky, poet laureate of the elementary school set, and two–time Caldecott Honor artist Peter Sis – invite you to join them on an adventure you will never forget!

Sheer delight! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My three sons, now teenagers, (and I,) were fortunate to have been introduced to this book by their first-grade teacher...and it brought us together for some very enjoyable reading! These poems are just downright funny, in the most innocent and slightly ornery way! My oldest son became an instant fan of Jack Prelutsky, and was even inspired to make up his own poems! Marylin Hafner's illustrations are just right to complement Prelutsky's poems--she captures the essence of each poem! You (uh, and your children!) will most assuredly enjoy this book!

Great poems for Christmas. Fun to read aloud with one child or a group of children. I used it in my classroom for many years. I bought this copy to donate to the library at my church.

Vintage Prelutsky 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's Snowing! It's Snowing! is a collection of seventeen poems about winter. The poetry has strong meter and rhythm and has definite child-appeal. The poems cover such topics as signs of winter, winter activities, and a child's necessary adaptations to survive the cold. The illustrations are small, but effectively rendered in muted tones which give the book a sort of "winter atomosphere." A favorite of my eighth grade students is "A Snowflake Fell" on page 41: " I wondered at the beauty/ of its intricate design,/ I breathed, the snowflake vanished,/ but for moments, it was mine."

Best Ever 5 out of 5 stars.

An absolute delight...! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For those who appreciate silliness, whimsey, and the supple flow of language used well, this book is an absolute delight. While many children's book authors try using rhyme in their works, few do it with the gracefulness and sense of sheer fun that poet Jack Prelutsky brings to the form. Add to his words the colorful, kooky draftsmanship of artist Garth Williams, and you've got an instant classic. These ditties combine elegant feel of A. A. Milne's poems with the giddy abandon of good, old-fashioned limericks. Most of all, they are fun to read, and equally fun to listen to... And don't be surprised if you and your kids wind up memorizing a few of them, to recite for years to come. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

It is hard to believe that Cincinnati Patty, Justin Austin, Pennington Poe, and the little pink pig in Arkansas have not been chanted and sung about by children for generations. But it is not hard to believe that they Will be chanted and sung about for generations to come! Jack Prelutsky and Garth Williams have created a nursery world, peopled with unforgettable characters. Come and meet your new friends. They will be old friends soon!
