It is the best Halloween book ever. It has just the right amount of creepiness to get kids really excited about Halloween. A fun book with simple rhyme schemes and memorable illustrations, it will keep kids interested. I'm 27 and I still love it.

and we shall see what can't be seen / on any other night 5 out of 5 stars.

my mom enjoys telling this story:

when i was about four, she checked "it's halloween" out at our local small-town library and brought it home. i made her read it every night, memorizing every word, and if she tried to skip a page, i'd call her on it.

when it came time to return the book, she couldn't find it and had to pay for a new copy for the library. some time later, she was cleaning my room and discovered where i'd stashed my copy under my bed.

greatest halloween book, and among the greatest children's books in general, ever.

Great poems for Thanksgiving. Fun to read aloud with one child or a group of children. I used it in my classroom for many years. I bought this copy to donate to the library at my church.

Fun, Fun, Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

What a terrific, fun, lively book! As much fun for me and my husband to read as it is for our son to have it read to him. Even though he is still small, he loves the rhyming cadence of it and the pictures. A nice change from Dr. Seuss - I just love Awful Ogre! Especially when he dances...or courts a grrrrl...or goes out to dinner...

This book would be a terrific addition to any childs library.

Truly a Dream Team! 5 out of 5 stars.

Fans of Prelutsky and fans of Zelinsky, rejoice! This devoutly-to-be-wished combination comes off just as well as you might imagine. It really does present a day in the life of a one-eyed ogre in poems and pictures. And by all means, read it out loud! It's so much more fun that way. My favorite -- "When elves and gnomes encounter me, / They often shriek, `Grotesque!' / I bow with magnanimity / And murmur, `Statuesque!' " And the pictures! There are a lot of things going on in the four-color pictures. And kids will have fun finding them all! Some of the language is hilariously gross and disgusting -- and not for the squeamish! Prelutsky obviously has always loved the sound of words -- and big ones, at that. And as always, he doesn't write DOWN to kids. There is a glorious perfection in his rhythms. Kids will love to grimace and wince along with the gory subject matter. This book is so much fun!

Editorial Review:

I'm an awful, awful ogre,

Absolutely awful ogre.

I'm so awful, Awful Ogre

Is my awful ogre name ...

Awful Ogre is huge, hungry, horrible –– and totally lovable. Larger than life, Awful Ogre packs into one day enough excitement, imagination, emotion, and sheer ebullience to last most of us a lifetime. In his awful, irresistible way, he steals the heart of every reader.

A Fun and Whimsical Tale with Beautiful Illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I LOVE this book! It is a rhyming story book with many beautiful illustrations about a baby who decides to go to sea in his mother's washtub and takes along his stuffed animals. I love all the imagination put into making it seem that the baby really is at sea and not just inside a washtub on top of his mother's blue scatter rug. It makes it so real, that at the end of the story, the mother can't figure out where one of the baby's animals came from---a new one has appeared that she doesn't know about. The rhymes are great, and imagining a little baby on such a big dangerous adventure makes it all the more fun. THis book could be for grownups to enjoy as well as children. I LOVE this book!! It's so full of whimsy and fun.

A most interesting book, truly... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I remember reading this book when I was in elementary school. I was an interesting lad that had a fascination for dreams and nightmares and how they worked, even at such an early age. When I came across this book, I couldn't help but read it. The poems I always enjoyed and could never forget, even at my current age of 31. Imagine my teacher's surprise when it was my turn to bring up a book to be read to the class, and I started spouting these poems. The other kids never looked at me the same again. Recently, I just happened to do a search for it, and here it is at Amazon, along with the other book (that I had no knowledge of..it was always the one book I remember). So after a hasty order, I'll be happy to add these to my collection of things to remember, and close another chapter in my own life and memories.

CLASSIC! 5 out of 5 stars.

I basically grew up on this and "Headless Horseman Rides Tonight". This is something that you can appreciate whether you're a child or an adult, especially if you're like me and you checked it out of the school library religiously. There was a review that said it was "unsuitable for children", ummmm yeah sure. As someone who was reading this book at the age of eight years old I can say that it helped expand my imagination and got me really interested in literature. One day I hope my little nephew will read this book and experience the same joy I did when I was little.

Alfred A. Knopf is proud to present this stellar collection of over 200

poems for animal lovers of all ages. Culled by Jack Prelutsky from the works of

more than 100 highly acclaimed poets of the twentieth century, here is a poetic

parade of the animal kingdom that ranges from the lowly earthworm to the

majestic whale and just about every creature in between. Some of the poems are

playful and funny; others are insightful and thoughtful--but all are brief and

fun to read aloud. Whether by Ogden Nash or Seamus Heaney, William Carlos

Williams or Marianne Moore, the striking images of each poem are captured in

the deft brushstrokes, sure sense of color, and lyrical compositions of Meilo

So, a brilliant young watercolorist. The Beauty of the Beast is a big,

Editorial Review:

Here are more poems bursting to be listened to, chanted, laughed over, and remembered.

It would be hard to find a school-age kid who has not read or heard a Prelutsky poem and who does not want to hear another. He plays with the language and encourages listeners to revel in the game. Puns, jokes, wordplay and shape play, wit, silliness, slapstick, and joy abound. Some of the poems are about people, some are about animals. And some are about things that never were (and that one hopes never will be). Be warned: Listen to a poem once and you will love it. Listen to it several times and it will be part of you forever.

Fun book! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book! It's got fun rhymes about all different kinds of sports and games. I would recommend it for kids that are 4 or 5 and older, though -- my 3 year old has a hard time focusing on the art and following the rhymes. I'm sure he'll love it when he's a bit older, though.

Editorial Review:

Exhilarating, all-new, kid-friendly rhymes capture the range of emotions, from winning to losing to the sheer joy of participating, that children experience as they discover the games of their choice. Jack Prelutsky, a virtuoso at making poetry fun for the elementary school crowd, includes in this inspired collection poems about baseball, soccer, football, skating, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, karate, and more. His signature lighthearted humor in verse that trips off the tongue is coupled here with the 2006 Caldecott Medal winner Chris Raschka's lickety-split, stylized (and stylish) watercolors. Every page is a blaze of color and motion. Whether Good Sports will create good sports remains to be seen, but it will prove to young boys (and girls) that reading poetry can be fun.

Exuberant fun 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"Me I Am!" by Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by Christine Davenier, celebrates the individuality in every child.

Based on a single poem by Prelutsky, "Me I Am!" follows the exuberant personality of several children as they show their stuff--baseball stances, roller skating, bike riding, insect-studying, ballet dancing, and dressing up. The kids are gleeful as they pursue their passions in a chaotic, kinetic kid-like style.

Here are the first eight lines of "Me I Am!":

I am the only ME I AM
who qualifies as me;
no ME I AM has been before,
and none will ever be.

No other ME I AM can feel
the feelings I've within;
no other ME I AM can fit
precisely in my skin.

"Me I Am!" is the perfect choice for a child who is feeling a little out of place. Best suited for children ages three to seven, "Me I Am!" encourages children to find the special within themselves. Christine Davenier's illustrations are simply wonderful--colorful, busy and full-of-life. Children will search for kindred spirits in these pictures. Davenier includes not only active, busy kids, but also the detritus of their lives. Books, frogs, flowers, items of clothing, and art supplies litter the pages, just as they do the lives of young children. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

I am the only ME I AM
who qualifies as me;
no ME I AM has been before,
and none will ever be. Three very different children reveal their individual personalities in a series of visual mini-adventures. Readers meet a mischievous tomboy who would rather roller-skate than wear a frilly dress, an inquisitive nature-loving boy, and an artistic ballerina who puts her own spin on Swan Lake. Finally, in a wild and funny climax, the three collide – only to discover a world full of unique and special “ME’s.”

With exuberant art and gleeful verse, this empowering celebration of individuality and diversity is just right for any young child discovering his or her own self – and the fun of being ME!
