a lovely book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

i got this out of the library and read it to my kids, 6 and 4 years old -- we all enjoyed the images it contained and my kids were eager to add their own impressions, which made for a memorable experience -- the book itself is poetic, moving, and often amusing, and the resulting conversation i got to have with my kids was an added, invaluable bonus.

Beautiful message for all ages 5 out of 5 stars.

I came across this book while Christmas shopping. The story asks Children of all ages "What does peace feel like", "...look like", "...taste like" ect. I had tears in my eyes while reading it,children have such amazing and off the wall answers to questions like these. I believe that people of all ages should read this book, especially with everything going on in the world at the moment. Stories like these give me hope for a brighter future.

It worked 4 out of 5 stars.

I got this book to help my 4 year old class understand the world around them just a little better. 4 year olds are just realizing others have feelings and to care for their friends. This year's group just wasn't getting it. I read this book to them. Afterwards I asked what Peace felt like for them. I got some great answers. I offered the book to another teacher and she too felt the children understood the book and got a lot out of it. It isnt a book you read and just put back on the shelf. Lots of talking about each page and the class adding their thoughts. So if you want a book that helps a child to think get this one.

Too obvious for me 3 out of 5 stars.

I do think this book is very pretty, but there are a lot of pretty books,as well as a lot of books about magical beings. This one was so predictable I felt pretty disappointed. Oh well. Maybe we just spend too much time with these creatures at my house

a great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently wrote and published my first children's book. I am especially interested in
children's books' role in early childhood development. I have "Where the Giant Sleeps" in my collection. It is a wonderful tool. Mem Fox and Vladimir Radunsky have produced a book that fits perfectly into a collection of traditional nursery rhymes, and the illustrations capture a child's imagination as no film ever could. I can assure that it has staying power through it's warm imagery and charming text for bedtime and classroom.

Editorial Review:

Do ogres snore? Do pirates have blankies? Do fairies suck their thumbs? We may never know the answers to these questions. But if we're lucky--and very observant--we might be able to catch a glimpse of some fantastic creatures, all fast asleep.
In soothing rhyme, bestselling author Mem Fox explores the sleeping habits of our favorite inhabitants from the world of fairy tales. Vladimir Radunsky fills a dreamy, picturesque landscape with surprising and fun details. Fairies, wizards, goblins, and even children all find peace under the same bright moon.

Here it comes to save the day. The mighty asparagus is on its way. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Prior to this book, Radunsky was probably best known for his illustrated children's books (picture and otherwise) and his insipid, "What Does Peace Feel Like?" of 2003. Nothing, in short, that set him apart from the pack of children's illustrators everywhere. Then he got an idea. He decided to create a picture book much in the style of such ribald and witty artists as Jon Scieszka and former partner Chris Raschka. A picture book that strains at the edges of convention. In short, a crazy amalgamation of classic Italian portraiture, the old Giant Turnip turned asparagus tale, and some mixed media for spice. The result is a book that may not always work in the ways Radunsky may have wanted it to, but at least it takes a gamble on being a little different. Other picture books should be so brave.

If you know the story of the giant turnip, then this tale will come to you as little surprise. One day the king is walking around his backyard when he spies a gigantic asparagus, fully grown, standing in the middle of things. Everyone admits that it is amazing, but the king is determined to remove it forthwith. Says he, "It sticks out like a sore thumb". No amount of pulling or tugging so much as budges the vegetable, however. His wife, the queen, finds the asparagus to be a beautiful sight. Her wish is to place it in the center of the palace but both she and the king are unable to move it. Add on the princess, the bravest the knight in the kingdom, and a mighty rhinoceros, but for all these the asparagus remains. Finally the king consults his mother and she sends a single tiny bird, who brings the tasty green tall thing crashing down. The moral, hidden amongst a lot of jabbering by the king's subjects, boils down to, "Even the smallest effort counts". End of tale.

It doesn't sound that weird, does it? Sounds pretty darn typical. Then you get a gander at the illustrations. Radunsky usually goes in for crazy original drawings. Here however he seems to have taken a page from Terry Gilliam's book. Characters, places, and things are all culled from classic Renaissance paintings, then given extra eyes, crazy noses, and sometimes entirely original faces. This haphazard conglomeration combines to produce a mighty weird tale. Then there are Radunsky's words in and of themselves. A fan of writing in script and saying things like the fact that he himself was born in 1589 and "became a participant in, the heroice battle of the Mighty Asparagus (March 1, 1602)". It's possibly the first picture I've ever seen made specifically for children that had honest-to-goodness footnotes in it. There are also a lot of fun throwaway lines here mixed within the story.

Honestly, I haven't a clue if kids will like this story. Adults certainly will, though the sheer scale of silliness will keep if from being universally beloved. For originality, however, it's hard to beat. A fun if somewhat haphazard tale.

Editorial Review:

Long ago in Italy, a mighty asparagus grew smack-dab in front of the king's castle. Was the king happy about it? No. The asparagus had to go. But how does a king reason with an asparagus of such stature?

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Vladimir Radunsky tells the uproarious tale of an almost immovable vegetable. Drawing on Italian Renaissance art, the esteemed artist creates a breathtaking magical kingdom, where it's easy to imagine that such an asparagus existed. His artwork is as gorgeous as it is funny. Although the old masters may turn over in their graves, readers of all ages will clamor for more of The Mighty Asparagus.

In the beginning there was a doodle. A doodle named Dude. Unfortunately for Dude, no one likes a doodle on a clean white wall, even if he is a blue elephant with lovely brown shoes. So our hero is chased off and forced to search for a new home. Rejected by the circus, pursued by hunters, and nearly washed out to sea, Dude never loses hope. Finally, by remaining true to his heart, he finds the love and respect he deserves.

The highly acclaimed creator of The Mighty Asparagus brings us a compelling tale of courage, perseverance, and finding beauty in unexpected places.

Fire! Fire! Said Mrs. McGuire 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The rhyme and story in this book are so much fun to read, they would keep young children asking to read it over and over. However, I do not feel I can use it in my classroom because of one illustration. A sexy blond is using her body to get what she wants from firemen-very inappropriate for young children! Bill Martin, please bring back your original version of this wonderful book.

Please review your reviews, this isn't the book you say! 3 out of 5 stars.

Please pay attention! The book "Fire, Fire said Mrs. McGuire" by Bill Martin Jr. and Vladimir Radunsky is not the book to which amazon has attached these two reviews. These reviews refer to another edition of the book. Also, almost every comment is directed toward the OTHER edition of this book. Bill Martin's book features not a blonde woman, but mice and kitty cats. Please be conscientious of what you write. This is fine book for children.

Editorial Review:

A modern adaptation of an old nursery rhyme, Fire! Fire! Said Mrs. McGuire combines the whimsical illustrations of Caldecott Award-winning illustrator Richard Egielski with the playful one-liners of Bill Martin. When Mrs. McGuire, a television news anchor, hears about a fire from a reporter flying over the city in a helicopter, a hilarious transfer of information begins. "'Where? Where?'" said Mrs. Bear. 'Downtown!' said Mrs. Brown." The story climaxes as the fire department arrives in a flurry to extinguish a blaze that turns out to be the candles on elderly Mrs. Wear's birthday cake.

A book to sing 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As a children's librarian in a public library, I'm always on the lookout for a good storytime book. This one is just right for singing out loud together. As a follow-up activity, the group can draw a picture of themselves building a house. The only fault I find with this book is the sheet music has been placed on the reverse side of the book jacket. In a library the patrons cannot get to that part of the book as it will be covered up.

Editorial Review:

Attention young architects and builders: Check out the house that Woody Guthrie and Vladimir Radunsky built!

Run bring rocks
and I'll bring bricks.
A nice pretty house
we'll build and fix

Making something together has never been this much fun! Legendary singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie is the architect; graphic artist Vladimir Radunsky and his young friends are the builders. You can be sure the house they build—full of zany humor and vivid color—is a fun house. So, ZING-O ZANG-O, come on in! Any child who has built something out of bits and bobs of anything or known the joys of creating will feel right at home!

The greatest. 5 out of 5 stars.

Nonsense in the best sense. Rhythm and clown. How can you miss with this, when, in the middle of the madness "He stops. He mops his brow"?

My Kids' Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was my daughter's favorite when she was a baby. Now her new little brother has reacted in the same way. Little ones don't often have to patience to sit still while you read every page of a book, but for some reason they find the Maestro so captivating that they request it over and over again. Our little crawler will drag it across the room and plop it in my lap. How can you say no to a request like that?

Editorial Review:

"The Maestro plays. He plays proudly. He plays loudly. He plays slowly. He plays oh-ly."Bravo to the three maestros who created this virtuoso picture book! There is Maestro Bill Martin, who writes cunningly, punningly, winningly, grinnnigly, unsinningly. There is Maestro Vladimir Radunsky, who illstrates smartly, artily, grandly (never blandly). And there is the Maestro of the story himself, who amuses wryly, informs on-the-slyly, and encourages children to see how masterfully they can play with words.

Editorial Review:

An Edward Lear Alphabet was first published in 1871, illustrated with the King of Nonsense's own incongruously matter-of-fact pen-and-ink sketches. Evidently Lear composed this rhyming alphabet for some children he befriended in a hotel, leaving a poem a day on the family's breakfast table. "A was once an apple pie, / Pidy / Widy / Tidy / Pidy / Nice insidy / Apple pie," he begins jauntily. Kids will love repeating the verses out loud--"E was once a little eel, / Eely / Weely / Peely / Eely / Twirly tweely / Little eel"--particularly early readers just learning to sound out words. Vladimir Radunsky's modern, explosively colorful, rather Monty Python-like collages (reminiscent of Yucka Drucka Droni) complement Lear's simple verse remarkably well, considering the century-long leap in style and attitude. These bold illustrations, many of which conjure a bald, bearded, bespectacled Lear, make the whimsical poet's verse all the more accessible. Readers who adore Lear and his joyful frivolity should also investigate the 1846 classic A Book of Nonsense, a rollicking, ridiculous poetic romp that no child or adult should be without. Captivating! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I started reading this book to our newborn son, who was immediately taken with the silly, repetitive words, and was captivated by the fabulous, large, multi-color illustrations. Now, at 15 months, this is one of the only books we can be guaranteed that he will sit through to the end...it's a repeat favorite and is an excellent read aloud for even the youngest infants. A great gift idea, especially for parents and/or caregivers who want to share and instill multi-cultural values in their growing children. This very lighthearted story is about the 3 brothers and the 3 sisters with silly names who marry and have kids -- all are of different ethnic persuasions, have different interests and occupations -- and all are different sizes and shapes.

Fun to read! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I read this book to my 4 year old neice, and to my two year old son. They both LOVED it. They asked me to read it over and over again! It has silly rhymes that can twist your tongue if you go too fast! The pictures aren't what you would expect for a children's book, but they are wonderfully done and even I like to look at them. I now have the book memorized and can tell it in no time flat. My husband likes to hear it becuase it makes his brain think if I tell it to him quickly. A must have for any book shelf!

Editorial Review:

After three brothers marry three sisters they, and their babies, six cats, six dogs, six pigs, and one frog, all live together in a big and crazy house.

Counting Armadillos..... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"Here is the town where Mr. and Mrs. Armadillo live. They just got married, and they are crazy about each other..." They play in the park and rest on a bench when they're tired. They greet other armadillos passing by, and they dream of a family and what to name their future babies. And then one morning Mrs Armadillo notices her tummy is getting bigger, and bigger, and even bigger, and she announces that she's going to have a baby. Mr Armadillo rushes her to the hospital where she delivers not just one, but ten new green and pink little ones. Overwhelmed with the prospect of naming ten babies, they decide to call them One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, and Ten. "Perfect names. I am so happy." Ecstatic relatives arrive with gifts. Grandma brings ten potties...just in case everyone has to go at the same time. Grandpa brings ten baseball caps...he really likes baseball. Uncle Elmer brings ten tutus, because he's so happy he feels like dancing, and Uncle Elmer's wife brings ten pets. One great big, very, very happy family..... Vladimir Radunsky's entertaining, wacky story is engaging, and filled with joy, humor, and the author's witty asides. But it's his bold, bright, and busy illustrations that really steal the show. Each expressive, playful spread is rich in dazzling color, intricate patterns, vibrant, eye-catching details, and lots of opportunities to practice your counting skills. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Ten is a captivating, fun-filled, manic romp that is sure to charm and delight young and old alike.

Editorial Review:

Mr. and Mrs. Armadillo are blissfully happy newlyweds. Only one thing is needed to make their happiness complete-a child. And if one child is good, won't ten be better? Of course that means ten of every single present will be needed, whether it's potties, pets, tutus, or baseball caps.

Only the amazing mind of Vladimir Radunsky could have created this wonderfully silly story about the fun-loving Armadillo family. Lots of little-known details about armadillos are revealed here. Did you know that armadillos wear ear socks? Always clean, always in bright colors. Did you know they paint their noses blue? (No one knows why.) Children and adults alike will be captivated by the antics of the lively Armadillo clan
