Illustrate with modeling clay 5 out of 5 stars.

An excellent book to help children learn how to illustrate a book with modeling clay. Easy step-by-step directions. Related book where illustrator uses modeling clay: Papa Diego by Benjamin Saenz, illustrated by Guillermo Garcia

A Great Book Especially for Kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

My mom bought me this book back when I was little and it was the starting point for me in learning the art of sculpting. The lessons are easy to understand and fun to do so both kids and parents can sculpt together. It can really inspire a creative side in your children that you may not have known was there. Little did my mom know when she bought me this book, years later I would run my very own successful sculpting company. Thank you Barbara Reid for creating such a wonderful book for children!

Lots of Pop-Up Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book hoping to find out a few tricks beyond the simple "strip" style pop up. I was very pleasantly surprised to find instructions for turning circles, 3-D cages, and sliders, among others! Given the number of projects included in the book, I feel it's an exceptional value! Instructions and diagrams were clear and easy for me to follow and I look forward to sharing some of these projects at my local elementary school, where I volunteer as art director for a 5/6th grade combination class. Children will definitely enjoy creating these simple, but impressive ideas!

CCSU Students 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The illustrations in this story are unique in form and inivite the reader to turn the book's pages. The richly textured illustrations make the author's words come alive in three dimensional effect. Children will enjoy the storytelling from the mouse's point of view of life on the subway track. The plot takes the protagonist on an adventure from the security of his mouse burrow to the uncertainity of "Tunnel's End". Each character he meets along the way is portrayed realistically through vivid dialogue exchanges and accompanying images. However, the overuse of simple and choppy dialogue clouds the plot line. As you read, the question "Will he make it to "Tunnel's End?" lingers in your mind and sustains interest.

Editorial Review:

Nib is a subway mouse. As a young mouse, he loved to hear the stories about Tunnel's End: a beautiful yet dangerous, roofless world. One day, Nib decides to set off, away from his dirty, crowded home, to find his dream. Along the way he meets a girl mouse named Lola, who joins him. Together, they navigate the long and dangerous tunnel, until, one night, when they have almost given up hope, they hear a small chirping sound. . . it is Tunnel's End, more beautiful than Nib ever dreamed.

fun and unique clay illustrations!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've been reading this book since I was young and still immensely enjoy it, mostly because of the illustations. Edith Chase uses a different kind of medium for the pictures...clay! The blended colors and textures are eye-catching and witty...very appropiate for children of all ages.

The text is actually a rhyme written by a different author before the whole book came together. I'm pretty sure Edith Chase rewrote it, though. The rhythm of the words make them fun play for your voice.

The story itself is about a cute calf and his loving mother living on a farm. The calf nurses, eats, runs, plays, and grows...children can definitely relate to this book.

Beautifully Illustrated! 5 out of 5 stars.

My child is now a teenager. I'd lent her original copy of The New Baby Calf to someone, and realized I was saddened by not having a copy of this lovely book in the house any more, so I bought this partly for old time's sake, and partly because Barbara Reid's illustrations are so rich and cleverly detailed, it's a pleasure just to sit and look at them from time to time. What she's done with clay is like nothing I've ever seen. The text is also sweet. Her work is much enjoyed by adults and children. Also check out the Zoe books, Subway Mouse, and others.

Editorial Review:

A baby calf is born, and under his mother's guidance grows happy and fat.

Wonderful Illustrations & Story 5 out of 5 stars.

My three year old and I love this book. Full of color and motion, it is our favorite of her large (and growing) library.

Discovery 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful book that both children and adults will love. My daughter 6 has brought it again and again from her school library. The story is realistic and one to which children can relate easily, they all love parties especially with chips, deserts and lots of fun, including their grandma. The illustrations details are breathtaking, absolutely wonderful, a true piece of art. Sentences are short and easy to read for your child, but also challenging. We also recommend the French translation. You will want to see more from the same author, just as we did.

A book to remember 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is one that I will remember for a very long time. My daughters borrowed it from the library several times until I finally decided to buy it. They absolutely love it. The book enables me to reminisce about my own childhood and the wonderful times with my extended family.

Two sisters don't want to go the the annual family summer party, but after they get there, they have so much fun they do not want to leave.

This book was WONDERFUL!! My 8 year old and I read it together. We LOVED the rhymes!! I am a Noah's Ark collector and my daughter checked it out of the library for that reason. She thoroughly enjoyed it-- especially the illustrations!! (Please let me know if there's any way I could purchase any of the pictures from the book to add to my collection!! They are great!!) Thanks!!

Creativity At It's Best 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great for people of all ages. The attention to detail and the great craftsmanship in the artwork is awesome. Being a clay artist myself, I can really see that Barbara has some real talent. If you like her style, she has done many other children's books. Especially fun is the "Zoe" series. They are hard to find but a treasure to have and share with your children.

Editorial Review:

An award-winning author/illustrator retells the tale of Noah's Ark in lively rhyme and warm, sumptuous illustrations in this ALA Notable Picture Book. A musical score and verses to sing the story are included.

Great tales of globetrotting with amazing illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Join a vibrant granny as she globe-trots around the world and brings her granddaughter gifts from her travels. It will make you itch for adventure and (without giving too much away) will bring tenderness to your heart.
I read this book to my kindergarten class after a year of "visiting" different countries through literacy, music, art, food, and language. My students thoroughly enjoyed the book ... it gave them a strong sense of accomplishment because they were able to identify each of the countries the grandma visited through the award-winning plastercine illustrations. A must have for any child interested in learning about the world.

Wonderful for All Ages 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was Great! My mother bought it for me as a "Gift", (I collect Barbara Reid Books-I'm a clay artist as well), I found the book to be artistically perfect and the story captivating. Another book well done by Barbara Reid!

Editorial Review:

A whimsical introduction to faraway lands and cultures is told from the perspective of a young girl, whose adventurous grandmother brings her back such treasures as an African baobab seed, an Australian didgeridoo, and a Hawaiian rainbow.

I have used this book over and over and over again! It was very helpful during my high school years in art class. I still find it useful today (I'm a clay artist). It teaches the simple fun ways of creating clever designs with plasterseen. GREAT FOR KIDS learning the art of making creatures big and small with clay.
