Good book. It's one of the older George stories and drawings, not one of the newer George stories and drawings.

Editorial Review:

George is excited to be in the city- it's the day of the big parade! But when the parade is delayed, George is distracted. He is also hungry. When it looks like a snack is just within reach, George has an idea. Soon the ball is rolling through another mischievous adventure.

A fun read 5 out of 5 stars.

My 5- and 3-year old sons enjoy this book. They received it at the same time they received a Curious George play rocket, so the storybook was very complementary to the toy. The story is simply told and wonderfully paced, and that monkey sure wins you over.

Great for Toddler 4 out of 5 stars.

George Wishes He Were Taller--But Then Realizes He's Just the Right Size! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

At some point, a child will confront the fact that he is too small or too short for *something*. This is evident at amusement parks, where there are height minimums required in order to ride.

In fact, we were at a local amusement park several years ago, and my son was very disappointed that he wasn't tall enough to ride the bumper cards (but WAS tall enough to ride roller coasters...go figure!)

This past weekend we visited a bookstore and my son wanted not one, but SEVEN Curious George books to add to his collection (he already had several at home). Curious George's Dream was one of the books we bought.

This 24-page book illustrated by Vipah Interactive begins with an exhausted George entering his house. He just spent the entire day at the amusement park with the Man With the Yellow Hat.

As George sits down for dinner, he reflects on the fact that he was too small for many of the rides and activities during the day. After dinner, TMWTYH puts in a movie (from the TV shot, it looks like King Kong) and George falls asleep while he's watching.

George then dreams that he is HUGE (so it was probably King Kong after all!)--certainly big enough to ride the rides. However, he cannot fit into the roller coaster seat--and he's too big too hold the rabbits. He even scares some of the people!

TMWTYH wakens George. George was thrilled that it was just a dream--and he leaps into his friend's arms. As the man with the yellow hat tucks him in, George is happy to be in his little bed. "It was not very big, he thought. But he fit in perfectly. George was just the right size."

This wonderful tale encourages children to accept their limitations--and shows that all shapes, sizes and physical traits can have both advantages and DISadvantages in life. Many children face obstacles resulting from being too short or too young, so this is an encouraging story for ALL children.

This book is geared towards children ages 4-8, so it's a good book for beginner/intermediate readers--and makes a great bedtime story!

Editorial Review:

After a long day at the fair George is frustrated. It seems he is always too small! But when George falls asleep and wakes up BIG, he discovers being too large can be difficult, too, and maybe he's the right size after all. The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.

My Favorite Curious George Book Thus Far 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Written in the spirit of the classic books by Margaret and H.A. Rey, Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory features the clean, simple illustrations of Vipah Interactive. (Other George stories are written/illustrated by Mary Weston, who gets enthusiastic with the black charcoal--resulting in dirty looking illustrations.)

One day, the man with the yellow hat and George go to tour a chocolate factory. George is enthralled to learn that there is a special coding system used to indicate various types of chocolate or fillings. For example, the chocolate with a squiggle is a truffle, the one with a little swirl on top is fudge, and the one with the N on it is for nougat.

In a scene reminiscent of the classic I Love Lucy episode, George accidentally turns a machine on "very fast"--sending chocolates speeding down a conveyor belt. He then helps the workers box up the chocolates (eating while he works!), and ends up saving the day.

George doesn't even accept a box of chocolates as a reward--because he has a tummy ache!

This delightful book also has a neat game on the back, with the different chocolates as game squares. All you need is two coins to play the simple game--three if you're playing with a friend.

Maybe it's because I'm a chocolate lover, but this is my favorite Curious George book! My son seems to love it, too.

Editorial Review:

When George and the man with the yellow hat stop to shop at a chocolate factory store, George becomes curious about how chocolates are made. Though he begins to follow the factory tour, George is soon off on his own to investigate. The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books will appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and will feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.

nice halloween alternative, with George 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This Curious George book is a nice alternative to other Halloween books, because it explores Halloween traditions other than trick-or-treating.

Curious George and the man with the yellow hat go to a friends house for a Halloween party, and it is a costume party. George and his friend have to borrow costumes from the hostess, and of course George's curiosity gets him in trouble. The guests play games like bobbing for apples.

This book is funny, like most curious george books. Children aged three and four who are just becoming familiar with Halloween will appreciate George's antics, and learn about halloween and costume parties at the same time.

There is nothing in this book that scared my son, aged 3. I don't think there is anything in here that would scare the average child of 3 or 4 years old. It's wholesome Halloween fun.

Editorial Review:

George and the man with the yellow hat arrive at a Halloween party—but they aren"t wearing costumes. No matter—there are plenty in an old trunk upstairs, and soon George is trying on all kinds of outfits. But when he wants to look in the mirror, George finds he has to jump on the bed. Downstairs, the partygoers begin to hear noises. Then the lights go out and they hear a crash! Uh-oh. Did someone say the word ghost?

H.A. Rey uses good learning skills 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

H.A. Rey uses good learning skills to teach children the alphabet. He uses visual education by making the letters into animals and people that the letter resembles. And he also uses good repetition after introducing the letter by using phrases that have the perticular letter in it and he highlights the letter used to make it stand out for the child. This book makes learning the alphabet fun and easy. It is original and playful, but what book with curious george isn't?

Learn letters with Curious George 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

In H. A. Rey's Curious George Learns the Alphabet, the man in the yellow hat teaches George how to read. George learns each of the letters of the alphabet as the man in the yellow hat relates both the upper- and lower-case letters to an object it resembles, starting with the letter. So, "A" is the open mouth of an alligator, while "a" is a piece of an apple; "M" is a mailman and "m" is a mouse; "R" is a rabbit and "r" is a rooster. Each letter receives a two-page spread. The illustrations are typical Rey drawings with a great deal of personality; within the object representing the letter, the form of the letter is easily recognizable, superimposed on the object with thick black lines. Some of the letter-objects are a little peculiar, but children who are just learning that letters represent sounds and objects will delight in the wacky illustrations of a spotted "J"-bodied jaguar, a man with an "n" for a nose, and the "q"-headed quarterback. The narrative lessons on letters are interrupted a few times with interludes for George to play football and buy doughnuts. Beneath the illustrations, each time the featured letter appears in the text (whether at the beginning, middle, or end of the word), it is highlighted with color. In the story, George and the man in the yellow hat helpfully model the instructional process. Although focused on letters and their shapes, because this book also tells a story, Curious George Learns the Alphabet offers a good way to first introduce the concept of letters, sounds, and words to children who are not yet focused directly on the alphabet. More advanced readers will also be able to focus on letter sounds and letters in the context of words and sentences.

Editorial Review:

Readers learn the alphabet along with George as the man in the yellow hat teaches the curious monkey how to read.

Take your child to the circus and never leave the couch! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I love ALL of these H.A. Rey "Lift the Flap" books. They are just well done and appealing. His art work is so innocent and perfect for children, a rare thing in this modern world of distorted, cartoon caricature-type art so prevalent in children's books today. I have 3 children, ages 19, 10, and 4 and ALL of them loved these books at certain times in their childhoods. In this one, it is very colorful and varied in its pictures of what you would see at the circus. It is one of our favorites in this series. I have never given this book to a child and not seen the child enthralled by it and going through it again and again, opening the flaps each time. If you are looking for a sure-fire hit for a small child (2-6 or so) then get this book. They can enjoy it themselves, and even if it becomes a favorite that mom and dad have to read over and over and over....(it's happened to me lots of times!), Mom and Dad will love it too, because it is not too long to get tired of. It is a very good price, and while a paperback, I find it sturdy. Our first set was bought 14 yrs. ago or so, and just now we had to replace them. These new ones are made of much sturdier paper. I guarantee you will like this book! And your child will too.

Great Way to Teach Emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book was not at all what I expected. At first I wasn't sure I would like it, but the response from my one year old son was excellent. He really enjoys learning about all the different emotions George feels. We also spend a lot of time talking about being naught and getting a time out. I think it helps a little with understanding.

Delightful! 5 out of 5 stars.

Accompany George on a tour of feelings and emotions where he is sometimes sad, and sometime silly. "Are You Curious," explores the curiosity of children in an amusing and delightful way, "Have you ever been naughty, so that you need a time out?" This entertaining little board book will hold your babies interest through colorful illustrations and simple text. Birth and up.

The twins loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book for our slightly-more-than-2-year-old twin grandsons, and they loved it. At this age, they're more interested in identifying the pictures than following the story, but that's ok. There's something about the monkey image that is endlessly fascinating to them. All two-year-olds love monkeys. Go for it!

Editorial Review:

Do you ever feel like George? Are you curious? Are you mischievous? Curious kids can read along with their parents to see if they behave like the monkey best known for getting in and out of mischief.

A Nice Primer for Younger Children who are Advanced Readers - a review of "Curious George Flies a Kite" 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Unlike many other Curious George books, this one is meant for kids to read for themselves. The Accelerated Reading designation is given as 2.7 which means the text is suitable for children reading at an advanced Second Grade level. [2.7 translates as a book that some average and mythical child should be able to read when in the 7th month of 2nd Grade. It can be enjoyed by people of any age, of course.]

My own observations about this book as a primer, is that it is sort of long, and at nearly 80 pages, although there isn't a ton of text on each page, I doubt most youngsters will be able to get through it in one sitting. But on the plus side, at our house we found it engaging and funny and it kept my son motivated to keep plugging away until it was done.

Conclusion ::: Although written as a primer for fairly advanced youngsters - at the almost 3rd Grade level - the actual plot may be too babyish for more precocious children. It was perfect though for my son who is now 6. He was laughing and chuckling throughout the book and was very motivated to keep going.

Curious George without the naughtiness! Yippee! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I adore Curious George but had struggled with the idea of buying the books for my son because George is always so naughty but ends up being a hero in the end. That is not a great lesson for the pre-school set, I think! He NEVER gets in trouble. In fact, great accolades are usually the result of his failure to behave and follow instructions to stay home. The only bad review for this book is from someone who writes, rightly, that this board book is just an excerpt from Curious George Flies a Kite. That's true but that's why I LOVE THIS BOOK! It gives me the opportunity to expose my son to this much beloved character without teaching him the lesson that misbehavior is acceptable. This version is fabulous. It is a great length and has the lovely illustrations that I remember so fondly as a child. That said, the way in which George "helped the bunny out" of the hole (by pulling the bunny's tail) provides a good opportunity to discuss handling animals gently with your kids! :>) Otherwise, terrific!

Inspired by a vignette in the classic Curious George Flies a Kite, this sweet story of hide-and-seek is now available in Spanish.
