Editorial Review:

When the man with the yellow hat takes George camping, George is very excited. There is so much to do at the campsite—pitching a tent, gathering water, meeting fellow campers—that George hardly knows where to begin (he only hopes the day will end with a roasted marshmallow!). When George's knack for unintentional mischief gets him lost deep in the woods, George is scared . . . and being sprayed by a skunk only adds to the trouble. But George puts on a brave face, and he ends up saving the day when he puts out a small fire that could have endangered the forest.

Comical 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

George and the Man with the Yellow Hat are off to the grand opening of a brand new toy store!

They excitedly wait in line and, of course, curious George isn't content to just *stand* there! He sneaks through the crowd and enters the store amid the protest of the store owner ("this is no place for a monkey!"). George is dazzled by all the toys--checkers, slinkies, hula hoops--and begins playing with them.

The bystanders get in on the act, and George ends up getting toys off the shelf for the customers. Needless to say, George was very good for business!

Based on the stories by Margaret and H.A. Rey, Curious George Visits a Toy Store is illustrated by Martha Weston. The simplicity and amusing story is definitely within keeping of the Rey's, although her illustrations are often a bit heavy on the black charcoal.

However, this is a great story that George enthusiasts will no doubt love.

Editorial Review:

A new toy store is opening and George can"t wait. Once George gets inside, the owner thinks his antics may be bad for business. It"s not long before George has her jumping through hoops to try to contain his curiosity. Will George"s playful nature really drive customers away, or will everyone"s favorite monkey find a clever way to save the day?

A Classic Curious George Fiasco... 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The basic storyline is that Curious George gets himself into a heap of trouble, and the more he tries to fix the situation, the worse it gets.

I did not feel that the story advocated George's tactics (stealing, etc.). All of the things that George does are obviously the wrong way of going about things...he doesn't earn the medal for any of his foibles. In fact, when George is caught it says "he felt so ashamed, he almost wished he were dead."

Of course, as in other George stories, the man with the yellow hat shows up to save the day, and he redirects George to a more appropriate use of his intelligence.

It may not be one of the great moral masterpieces of our civilization, but it's vintage Curious George--a classic from a simpler era when everything wasn't hyper analyzed.

Editorial Review:

In this classic story, George tries to write a letter—but, when he spills ink everywhere, his cleanup efforts fill the room with soap bubbles. He also frees a pen full of pigs, rides a cow, hitches a ride on a pickup truck, crashes into a dinosaur, and finally, most importantly, soars into outer space, which results in the happiest day of his life—he gets a medal, of course!

Previously a book-and-cassette-tape package, the audio recording is now also available on CD.

Nice book, but read the editorial review above 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

That said, the editorial review is quite right. The attention to detail of the original George books is absent in this one. It also misses the lesson that is supposed to be taught in the books when George does something he wasn't supposed to. However, in this book, he winds up getting out of his seat to see where the movie is coming from, upsets the projector, but never gets punished for it. He's patted on the back and given free popcorn since he saved the day by making hand shadows on the screen. Not too sure what type of message they're trying to send with this book, but since it isn't written by the Reys, it's hard to tell. I wouldn't really bank on this one - the message just isn't there and doesn't stay true to the original George books. Don't really recommend this one.

Editorial Review:

The movie that George and the man with the yellow hat have been waiting to see is now playing! Once inside the darkened theater, George is curious about the light coming from the back of the room. As usual, George's curiosity gets him into trouble but his clever tricks save the day. The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books will appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and will feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.

Excellent, Cruelty-Free Book 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is a clever, witty, and ultimately cheerful book about how a Giraffe and nine monkeys unexpectedly help each other. Published in 1946, it's the first book featuring "Curious George." George was eventually taken from his habitat by the kind man in the yellow hat, but here we see George with his Mother and seven siblings. The book is filled with both verbal and visual humor (the nine monkeys all sleep together in a gigantically long giraffe bed). The giraffe helps the monkeys play by volunteering to play as a slide, a teeter-totter, and a sailboat. In all of these scenarios, the giraffe volunteers to play, is asked nicely to play, or looks pleased. There's one funny scene where the monkeys make a pair of stilts for Cecily, who is described as "terribly excited" (not coerced). In some deft self-referential humor, Rey draws the giraffe on the stilts "so high the page isn't big enough to show all of her."

There is only one slightly dissonant note in the book, when the monkeys have tied strings between Cecily's head and outstretched legs to make a harp. For some reason, Cecily's smile looks forced, and the array of strings make her look tied up. Moreover, while Cecily does not object, neither does she explicitly give her permission for this activity. Other than this possibly flawed scene (given the tone of the book, undoubtedly inadvertent), I see only mutual support and friendship. It is also possible that a young reader who is familiar only with the later Curious George books may be upset to know that Curious George apparently left a rather large family behind (I don't know how--or even whether--the author dealt with this in some later book), but you can judge whether this will be troublesome for your audience. Here, however, George and family happily make a new home with the giraffe (after saving her house), and the formerly lonely giraffe has a house full of new friends. This is a creative (but apparently overlooked) book that shows how imagination (and a long neck) can bridge the distance between strangers and lead to fun and mutual help.

Editorial Review:

A lonely giraffe with no playmates and nine monkeys with no home team up for adventure. Curious George is among the nine little monkeys playing with Cecily G.

Delightful! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My 9-month old loves this book! The short rhymed text is enough to pique his interest and to reach for the flap to find the baby animal. I have a feeling I'll have to buy another book when he wears these pages out. If your child enjoys being read to - especially flap books - and also enjoys animals, I would recommend this book.

Okay book, not as good as Curious George 2 out of 5 stars.

Not very sturdy for the price and the illustrations and story are so-so. Curious George books are much better.

Book is adorable and an easy read 5 out of 5 stars.

I collect Rey books so that was my main reason for purchasing this book. However it is a really cute story with page edges that lift up to reveal the "hidden" babies - this would appeal to young children who have a particular interest in animals.

Not as good as Colorforms 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my 3-year old who loves Curious George. The stickers look great but are very flimsy (not the same quality as Colorforms). They are a pain to replace onto the storage mats, especially the little birds, frogs, butterflies, etc, because the outlines for each shape are pretty faint. The background mats are also small relative to the very large stickers. I would not recommend this toy because the you spend more time replacing the stickers than setting the stages.

Editorial Review:

Hours of sticker fun in one adorable tote! Perfect for travel! Each tote includes 2 tri-fold board with two scenes, reusable stickers in a sturdy carry-along tote (6" x 6 1/2"). Makes a GREAT gift for friends and family!

A little creepy 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For some years this picture book by the great H.A. Rey (of Curious George fame)was out of print and now it's back. As ever, Rey's drawings are expressive and fun. However, the story itself is a little problematic; Elizabite is a carnivorous plant who keeps eating things she shouldn't and growing, which sounds funny but is actually kinda weird and frightening, especially when she tries to eat a scientist towards the end. Small kids who aren't put off by this kind of thing may enjoy it anyway, or slightly older kids, maybe. Like "Cecily G and the 9 Monkeys" which features a giraffe removing its own skin, there is something a little unintentionally disturbing about Rey's more obscure, offbeat efforts. Stick to the CG books and to the recently rediscovered "Whiteblack the Penguin."

Editorial Review:

Elizabite is a carnivorous plant who eats insects as appetizers and enjoys hotdogs for snacks. Whether it walks, talks, flies, or barks, Elizabite is ready to make a meal of it. Her cheerful, hungry smile and infinite appetite attract much attention - a scientist examines her, a professor studies her, and everyone agrees that she is one of a kind. In an effort to control her diet and her unpredictable temper, Elizabite's admirers chain and muzzle her. But not even a barbed wire fence can prevent her from following her heart's (and stomach's) desire! Only when her unique appetite prevents a crime does Elizabite win the respect she deserves. The story of Elizabite, written more than fifty years ago, keeps company with those of Curious George, Spotty, and others in the Reys' memorable cast of characters. Perhaps less well known than her compatriots, but equally well loved, Elizabite teaches the value of being oneself.

Entertaining! 5 out of 5 stars.

Tag along with George as he explores opposite ideas in this charming little board book. "Curious George's Opposites", demonstrates contrary concepts "George climbs UP, and then jumps DOWN," in an amusing and pleasing fashion. The colorful images and simple text will capture babies attention while entertaining small children too. Birth and up.

One of the greatest books of all time 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read this book over one hundred times, no kidding! This is one of the finest literary and illustrative works ever made. The anticipation and excitement of the page where George lets the pigs out will make your kids squeal with delight!

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 11-month old boy laughs every time I show him this book. I also enjoy reading this as you can actually create mini stories with each set of opposites so it's much more entertaining than usual oposite books.

Editorial Review:

Riding forward and backward on his bicycle and letting pigs in and out of their pen, George, in his typical inquisitive manner, explores opposites in this Spanish translation of a board book favorite.
