Bad Kitty! 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Ralph is a very bad kitty, as is generally what cats thrive on being. He is often rude, knocks things over, disrupts social occasions, makes sport of preying on pet birds, fish or rodents, and purposely exacerbates the one annoying, albeit universally inherent, trait in dogs: obnoxiousness. After one especially horrid, feline-induced fiasco at the circus, Sarah's father determines that he's had enough of Ralph and gives him the boot. Ralph's consequential homeless journey thus necessitates him a good look inwardly, seeking the key to whatever could possibly save him from being lost forever to his comfortable home and family...

Not so very many years ago, I had the very great pleasure of reading over and over and over, and over immeasurable, this fine tale of haphazardness, naughtiness, chastisement, and redemption. So I'll now tell you a little tale of my own - a personal pathway, of sorts, toward eminent endearment of this sweet little book:

Several years ago, a little child went with her mother and father to a book signing in downtown Chicago. The name of the book escapes me now, but alas, it's irrelevant to this story. John Lydon ("Johnny Rotten" of Sex Pistols fame) was doing the signing for some newly published writing affair at a trendy north side bookstore. As Mr. Rotten has always had a great dedicated following, the line for this book, to be graced with his signature, was immensely long. The little girl, wearing a pink winter coat and purple ribbons in her hair, was the only child present in a snaking line omnipresent in the aisles throughout with multiply tattooed and body-pierced fans. Yet she was neither intimidated nor gainsaid as she quietly recited her favorite nursery rhymes, picking up to browse each prettily covered book she saw. She was ever patient, and even after over an hour of waiting would smile sweetly to strangers' questions and comments as she held onto her mother's hand.

Finally, after what seemed like an infinitesimal wait, she and her parents reached the front portion of the line. Then, all hearts fell as the gentleman just ahead of her family, a tall thin young man with long silky black & blue-streaked hair and an earring was told the featured book had just sold out - that there were absolutely no more copies. Dejected and deflated, all those remaining in the line began to take their leave.

This little girl, however, would have nothing of it. "But we came here for a book!" she cried loud enough for anyone in the store to hear, "I want that book!" Before either of her parents could chastise her for this outburst, Mr. Rotten spoke up with that beautifully enunciated British accent he has, and said, "You want a book? I'm sorry...uh, but we...Wait - This child wants a book! - Oh yes, never fear, little one; I will get you a book." A consummate gentleman, he merely snapped his fingers to one of his assistants and pointed to a nearby display at the edge of the children's section, and said, "I want to give her that book."

ROTTEN RALPH was the chosen book's title. My daughter's copy is signed by Johnny Rotten, the inside jacket adorned with a Polaroid photo taken of herself, her new book, and the kindest punk rock star on earth. Truly, upon many a night for perhaps the next two years that followed, ROTTEN RALPH was included in our nightly ritual of bedtime stories. And though our cat George was often annoyed that he was forced to sit, listen and learn, neither my girl nor I ever tired of reading it.

Rotten Ralph's Rotten Christmas 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Perfect for mischievious children who need to know they are always loved. Jealousy as an emotion is dealt with at a young child's level. Illustrations are comedic. My second graders gave it a thumbs up.

Up To His Normal Tricks 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loves all the Rotten Ralph books. Rotten Ralph might act bad sometimes but by the end of the story, he is reminded that his life is good and he should be thankful for the love he shares with his owner Sarah. My son can definitely relate to Rotten Ralph! And the illustrations always keep his attention. :-)

Rotten Ralph is not at all nice to the Christmas visitor.

A Great Combo of Fun and Fact 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Nicole Rubin (a twin herself) offers a multiplicity of twinship facts and "factoids" from biology, history, psychology, math, and zoology (all easier to master than those words might imply!). The varied format and perspectives keeps things moving, and will appeal to a wide audience

Rubin answers scientifically-oriented questions as "Where Do Twins Come From?" and "What are the Odds" clearly and factually. However, she also presents many entertaining anecdotes and stories about twins, often of the "Gee whiz" variety: The twins separated at birth who discover astounding similarites when they meet years later, the 3,000 sets of twins (there's a photo of them) who meet annually in Twinsburg, Ohio, and famous twins such as Abigail Van BUren and Ann Landers, bad guys Reggie and ROnnie Kray, Robin and Maurice Gibb, and Mary-Kate and Ashley (too famous to need a last name).

Aside from the humor (e.g., two pages of riddles such as: Q. "What do you do if twin tigers are running towards you?" A. "Run twice as fast!"). the most important sections deal with the advantages/disadvantages of twindom, and how to deal with these, either as a twin, or as an adult caregiver. Through interviews with young twins, humorous examples, and straight-on tips, we learn that while twins MAY have a special bond, others' silly questions and expectations can be a real burden too. Kids are offered some snappy comebacks ("What's it like being a twin?" "I don't know. What's it like not being a twin), and twins (and their parents/guardians/teachers) are encouraged throughout to celebrate the special bond, but develop their individuality as well. A one-page acknowledgements page contains books and a few websites (e.g., twinsmagazine.com) for further exploration.

Rubin, creator of the "Rotten Ralph" series as well as many other superb books, gives us an intriguing, light, but informative book that explores the relatively rare (no pun intended) phenomenon of twinhood, while understanding and respecting the experience.

Editorial Review:

Double the fun

Fraternal twins Bonnie and Ronnie take readers on a whirlwind tour of twinship, interspersing informative segments on everything from "Where Do Twins Come From?" to "What Are the Odds?" with amusing sections of twin riddles, advice to twins, twin interviews, and snappy answers to dumb twin questions ("Wow, am I seeing double?" "Yes, maybe you should get your eyes checked"). Also included: a retelling of the story of two of the most famous twins of all time, Jacob and Esau, and dozens of fascinating snippets about amazing twins from history and the present day, among them Castor and Pollus, Abby and Ann, and Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Drawing on her own experience and thorough research, Nicole Rubel has created a book that is brimming with details, eye-popping artwork, and extensive notes on interesting Web sites and reading material.

Walk Like A Rotten Feline! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Jack Gantos' adorably mischievous feline, Rotten Ralph, is at it again! Sarah has a big project due for school about Ancient Egypt and she desperately wants Ralph to assist her. In typical Ralph fashion, however, Ralph wants to do anything but what his ever-so-patient "owner" Sarah wants him to do. Gantos uses the conversations between Sarah and Ralph to inform readers about various aspects of life and culture in Ancient Egypt, but does so in such a way that it doesn't come across as "teachy," but entertaining instead. From the fact that Ancient Egyptians regarded cats as super-special deities to the fact that Ancient Egyptians were the first to invent pancakes, the material presented in this new chapter-book approach from Gantos and Rubel will interest and appeal to children who are ready to graduate from the previous Rotten Ralph books to something they can manage on their own. Rubel's artwork is as charming as ever and Gantos' wit is matchless as Ralph takes on a whole new format of fun and frolic! Sooooooooo cool! A definite winner.

Editorial Review:

"Rotten Ralph is one cat who can make reading fun for kids. And he does!" --Marc Brown

Sarah needs a topic for her school project on ancient Egypt. Her rotten red cat, Ralph, thinks history is a bore. Only after he spoils a research trip to the library does Ralph decide to help. According to Sarah, the ancient Egyptians believed cats were wise and had special powers. And Rotten Ralph knows he can prove them right!

This antic adventure is the first Rotten Ralph Rotten Reader, a rambunctious new series for beginning readers.

Rotten Ralph is funny 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 5 year old daughter finds this book hysterical. I like reading it to her. I agree with the other person that the cat should have consequences for hurting the other persons's feelings and being so bad. His owner should give him consequences for his bad behavior.

Rotten Ralph Rules!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I Love Rotten Ralph! I have been working in libraries for quite some time. I was elated when I discovered my pal Ralph as an adult. I was also shocked to discover that most people do not know about him. I didn't either while growing up. Ralph has been around since the 1970's. All of the old school library ladies that I knew never ordered Rotten Ralph books because they just didn't get it! Rotten Ralph is just good fun. Ralph doesn't mean to be Rotten. He gets carried away like many children do. Also, no matter what Sarah loves him anyway. Isn't that the best moral of all for children? Children need to know that we may not like what they do but we still can love them. Ralph is just cool.

Editorial Review:

Sarah wakes Ralph up with a great big kiss. "Happy Valentine's Day!" she says. Rotten Ralph hides under his pillow. Sarah is very excited to take Ralph to Petunia's Valentine's Day Party. But Ralph will do almost anything to avoid the party and drippy Valentine kisses!

Explores sibling jealousy in a unique way 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Here's a book about the first day of school that doesn't have the main character dreading her first day of school. On the contrary, Sarah is excited at the thought of making new friends.

But not everyone in the household is as happy for Sarah. In fact, Ralph, Sarah's rotten red cat, is doing everything he can to sabotage her school day: he sets back her clock, draws all over her new school dress and tries to trick her into staying home by faking an illness.

When Ralph gets the bright idea to follow Sarah to school, his antics get her in trouble and keep her from making new friends. Fans of Rotten Ralph--this is the ninth book in the series--know that all's well that ends well, but first-time readers may be a bit put off by Ralph, who seems just a tad too mean.

Rubel's chunky illustrations are colorful and bold. Her rendering of Ralph captures his true spirit right on the money...he's bright red with pointy ears and a devilish grin.

Gantos' book would be a good way to explore the jealousy that younger siblings might feel when an older brother or sister gets to try a new and exciting experience that they don't. Younger children might not recognize themselves in Rotten Ralph and his outrageous tactics, but I'm betting that parents will.

Editorial Review:

The character Rotten Ralph was created more than twenty years ago. Now the worlds most rotten cat and his friend, Sarah, set out again on a variety of capricious capers. In three brand-new boisterously entertaining stories, Rotten Ralph is sure to weasel his way into the hearts of another generation of readers. In Back to School for Rotten Ralph, summer is over, and Sarah cant wait to start school and make some new friendsother than her rotten cat, Ralph. But Ralph wants to be Sarahs only friend, and he won't be left behind. When Sarah boards the school bus, he disguises himself as a student, follows her to class, and starts his scheme of sabotage. Ralphs plan works brilliantly until his true identity is revealed and the entire class wants to be friends with Sarah and Ralph!

Grody's not so Golden Rules 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Nicole Rubel once again displays her artistry and humor with Grody's not so Goden Rules. Grody is every parent's worst nightmare. Tired of his parents and sister constantly telling him what to do, he puts together his own "rules" and reaps what he has sewn with hilarious and apt results.
Thankfully, his last rule is not to follow his rules. Grody learns his lesson and readers will laugh and learn with him.
Rubel ventures into a new realm artistically with Grody. She uses ink, markers, colored pencils, watercolors and strategic splashes of collage. The result is wonderful, with each page a treasure hunt to find the various collage pieces. My personal favorites are the orange fuzzy slippers. With this book, Nicole Rubel offers children and parents a visual bouquet and a zany new character to love. Grody is a hit.

Editorial Review:

Why do kids have to follow so many rules? Everyone in Grody's life gets to tell him what to do: his mother, his father, his sister, his teacher. . . . He's tired of it! Determined to take matters into his own hands, Grody comes up with his own set of rules. Clean socks? Who needs 'em? Use a napkin? What's the point?
Beloved author-illustrator Nicole Rubel has created a character who will have kids howling--and maybe, just maybe, seeing the reason behind some of those awful rules grown-ups like so much.
