The Nose Knows 5 out of 5 stars.

This richly illustrated Western retelling of "Cyrano de Bergerac" is fine fare for youngsters 3 to 9. Cyrano, in this scenario, is a sheriff with a somewhat large nose, and an even bigger crush on the belle of the town, Roxane, the sheepish (literally) librarian. Trouble is, Cyrano's deputy, Wolfie (yes, he's a wolf) has a thing for Roxane as well.

But that's not Cyrano's only problem: The Gila Monster Gang (umm, they're Gila Monsters) comes in a-shooting up and robbing the town. The story proceeds loosely along the lines of the original (with some action and sarsaparillas thrown in for Western authenticity) as the amorous but shy Cyrano writes poems for Roxane, signed by Wolfie. But, when the Gila Monster Gang threatens to rob the train at Purple Rock River, Cyrano (with the agility and power of a Kobe to Shaquille dunk) uses all his talents to capture the gang and win Roxane's heart.

I think Roxane puts it best: "Cyrano! Your great nose has taught you to be courageous, but your poetry has lassoed my heart!" Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Cyrano is a brave sheriff when he's chasing rascals and varmits, but his legs turn to jelly when he thinks about Roxane. Cyrano is sure she can never love him because of his enormous nose. When a handsome rival for Roxane's affections appears, Cyrano thinks all hope is lost. It takes a gang of desperadoes for the shy sheriff to realize his true worth. Full-color illustrations.

A lesson in ineffective parenting 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the most awful books I have ever read! Rotten Ralph is a cat. He does a long list of awful things, like putting toothpaste into his mistress's slippers. She keeps threatening to cancel his birthday party because he's been so bad. But she never follows through and cancels it -- he just keeps doing bad things, and she just keeps on threatening the same threat but not following through. At one point Ralph thinks that she really did cancel the birthday party and he is sad about it. But then it turns out that there's a surprise birthday party for him after all. His mistress says, "You know I love you too much to cancel your birthday party." It is such an exercise in ineffective parenting that it really makes me cringe. One of the basic rules of discipline is that you should only ever threaten consequences that you are willing to follow through on, and then if the child earns the consequence, you need to follow through on what you said you'd do, preferably swiftly, and preferably not after a bunch of bad behavior and endless threats. It felt to me like Rotten Ralph's mistress had really created a climate where Ralph could continually behave badly, where he knew he didn't have to listen to what she asked, where he came to think of himself as a Rotten cat who does lots of Rotten things.

So this book is not my pick for great children's literature.

Editorial Review:

Rotten Ralph is even rotten on his birthday, finally forcing poor Sarah to take drastic measures.

Editorial Review:

Rachel has theories about a lot of things – how she ended up
with humongous beaver teeth, why tourists who visit Miami
wear such ugly clothes, and why her father loves her identical
twin sister, Rebecca, the most. Still, there are many things in
Rachel’s life that even her best theories can’t really explain.
Why, for instance, does her grandmother insist on feeding her
honey cake every Sunday, when everyone knows it tastes
disgusting? Why did Rachel end up with the most ancient fifthgrade
teacher in the school, a woman with amoeba-shaped
stains under her arms? And why is Rachel always in trouble,
unlike Rebecca?

In humor-filled prose and pictures, Nicole Rubel introduces us
to a remarkably off-the-wall family – a father who sells novelty
maracas for a living, a mother who is so gorgeous even
orangutans fall in love with her, a sister who is a perfect genius,
and scattered Rachel – struggling to find her unique talent and
self-confidence.
