Editorial Review:

Deep in the heart of a big city...

All of Mabel's sugar cubes have disappeared. And when you run Mabel's fancy Tea Room, missing sugar is a disaster! Who would pocket sugar cubes? And why? Someone with a sweet tooth? Or is there another reason?

This sounds like a case for the High-Rise Private Eyes -- Case #008, to be exact,

The Islander by Cynthia Rylant is one of the best books that I've read that she has written. This beautiful and engaging story tells about death and love, mixed with fantasy and mystery. The Islander is a great book for 4th Grade and up. It's a short read, so go to the library and check out this book!

An exciting tale 5 out of 5 stars.

One of my son's favorite books 5 out of 5 stars.

When we first found this book at the library; the beautiful cover illustration first caught three-year-old Matthew's eye. Once home, it became his favorite book among the 20 or so that we had borrowed that week. I am not sure, nor can he verbally elaborate for me the draw of this book for him, but I will offer my own opinion. The tender, loving approach of the painter to the shy young boy, Charlie, is quite appealing. That the painter is male is all the more special as he becomes a wonderful role model for young boys bombarded by so many conflicting messages in the popular media. Matthew seemed to identify with the child in the story and began walking around with a pencil behind his ear, just the way Charlie and the painter do in the book. He also wanted to "get my paints, Mama" after reading the book. Lastly, the awakening of the affective and expressive side of this boy is a lovely process to observe and is elaborated beautifully by the watercolor illustrations throughout. I am confident that these too led Matthew to love this sweet, gentle book.

Editorial Review:

"A dreamy piece about a young boy's awakening to artistic vision through his friendship with a lakeside painter. . . . The developing relationship parallels Charlie's inner process of getting to know the private, creative part of himself. . . . This is romantic, but not sentimental. It is eloquently done, and the whole--words and pictures--speaks and lingers."--School Library Journal, starred review. Full color.

Editorial Review:

Here is Cynthia Rylant's most memorable writing yet -- a spiritual novel about the wonders of life and the afterlife. In this book, a series of touching vignettes, she paints a moving picture of the stopping place between heaven and earth -- and in the process, she reminds us that life is an extraordinary gift, and that those we love are never really far away.

A Fine White Dust 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A Fine White Dust is about a boy named Pete who is afraid to going into hell.He meets this guy whom he thinks is a crimnal but it turns out that he is a preacher. The Preacher found out that Pete is very religious, so he helps him through his fear. The Preacher invites Pete to come along with him.Now he has to choose his parents or the Preacher...
I think that Cynthia Rylant wrote this book to teach us that you have to make choices.I also think she wrote this book because in our life we have to give up somethng to gain another.
I liked the book because the author describes it so well.I also like the suspense.I kept reading until I finished it.

This book is about a boy named peter that is very interested in god but his parents are not really into that. One day this boy is going out of town and he saw a hitchhicker. when he drove by the hitchhiker he felt as if he is god in a disquise. While Peter is in church one day a precher takes the stand and to his surprise the man is the hitchhiker he saw when he was leaving town. Peter got into church and god alot while the preacher is there for 3 days. On the second day peter is in church the preacher gets him on stage and does somthing that maked him and many other people pass out. The next day peter is in his room and his friend Rufus was over and all peter was talking about was how he got saved last night Rufus was very confused with what he was talking about and Peter got very mad with him and kicked him out but they made up the same day. also on the last day the preacher got Peter up on the stage and asked him to go with him and Peter said what so the both went walking and the preacher stoped and looked at somthing Peter could not see. Peter said what are you doing and the preacher said will u come with me and peter wanted to say no but he said yes. So that night Peter wrote a note to his parents that explained why he left. The next day he went to where he was spossed to meet the preacher. They were spossed to meet at 11 but he did not show up so peter stayed till 1 and he still did not show up. But all the time Rufus Peters friend was waiting in the bushes. When peter was about to head back Rufus popped out and walked him home. They got home and they got him to bed. The next day Rufus came over and Peter and him got in a fight about the preaher bacause Rufus told him what happened he said that the preacher left with a girl. The next 3 weeks for peter were very dark. All of a sudden the girl the preacher left with came back to town but still this day she isnt talking. Peter still goes to church but not like he used two.

Editorial Review:

The visit of the traveling Preacher Man to his small North Carolina town gives new impetus to thirteen-year-old Peter's struggle to reconcile his own deeply felt religious belief with the beliefs and non-beliefs of his family and friends.

A warm rhyming book about a bunny family and their new home 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Both my toddler and I really enjoy this book about how a bunny family sets up its new home - all members working and playing together in the process. The pictures give quite a bit of detail while maintaining a cozy feel. Accompanying the visual are sing-song rhymes(about 4 lines per page). It's a very nice book to wind down.

Pleasant 4 out of 5 stars.

"Bunny Bungalow" isn't so much a story as a celebration of cosy domestic life. In well-turned verse couplets, it explains how the bunny family (Mom, Dad, three kids and baby) set up house in a bungalow and "made it all their own" by decorating it (including a carrot weathervane) and living in it (baths, picnics, playing, bedtime, etc.) All of this is skillfully illustrated with simple strokes and appropriate washes of color. This is a quiet, cheerful book with no conflict in it, and will make a soothing singsong read-aloud for preschoolers.

Love it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Annie loves teacups. She loves their pretty shapes. She loves their painted flowers. She loves their dainty little saucers. Her cousinand best friend, Henry, doesn't love teacups. Henry isn't interested in dainty things. Henry's dog, Mudge, weighs almost two hundred pounds, which is definitely not dainty!

Can Henry help Annie find friends who love teacups as much as she does?

Editorial Review:

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote nine Little House books about her childhood growing upon the western frontier. But there were two years she didn't write about, two missing years that take place between On the Banks of Plum Creek and By the Shores of Silver Lake.

Now, Newbery Award-winning author Cynthia Rylant has imagined what those lost Little House years were like, based on Laura's unpublished memoirs. The result is the first Little House novel about Laura as a young girl in almost 60 years, and a wonderful addition to the classic series.

When the grasshopper plague returns to Plum Creek, Pa knows all the crops will be destroyed again. He decides to take the family east to Burr Oak, Iowa, where he has found work running a hotel. But Laura tongs to return to the tall-grass prairie and the unsettled west, to a place where Pa can play his fiddle in the open air and where she can feel free again.

Old Town in the Green Groves continues the story about Laura Ingalls -- a story whose wonder and adventure have delighted millions of readers.

Little Whistle Comes to the Rescue 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Other reviews have said these books are rather treacly in flavor, but not so to children. In its own pleasing simple and kind words, these books tell the story of Little Whistle, a little guinea pig, who is the only live animal in a toy store. But magical things happen at night and the toys come to life and along with Little Whistle they play and listen to their good friend, Soldier's nightly stories.

In this third book, though, Little Whistle has to don his medical gear because Soldier cannot tell the bedtime story as he is ill with a headache.

Little Whistle comes to the rescue! After hopping into a toy train, he finds a toy first-aid kit and helps his friend with bandages and toy medicine. Little Whistle has cured his friend and Soldier is now able to tell his night stories to all the toys--and to Little Whistle.

Wonderful drawings and a wonderful book for children.

Editorial Review:

Little Whistle loves listening to his friend Soldier read stories to everyone in Toytown. But one night Soldier doesn't feel well enough to read anything at all. Can Little Whistle find a way to help Soldier get better--and save story time?
