Editorial Review:

Christmas at Henry and Mudge's house means cookies and carols and presents, and the whole family gathering for a delicious breakfast (with lots of food falling on the floor for Mudge). It may just be the best Christmas ever -- but Henry's favorite present is the big, lovable dog he's had all along.

HAUNTING AND ENCHANTING. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you love walking at night, in the woods, fields, meadows and mountains like I do, you are going to love this work. Using the wonderful lyrical, almost mystic words of Cynthia Rylant, the artist Mark Siegel has given us some truly amazing visuals that are absolutely haunting. This book was written for children but is as enchanting for adults as it is for the little ones. I cannot imagine a book better suited to read to a child before bed.

Ms. Rylant has taken the custom of Native Americans and given a name to each full moon, one for each month of the year. They include:

January the Stormy Moon
February the Snow Moon
March the Sap Moon
April the Sprouting Grass Moon
May the Flower Moon
June the Strawberry Moon
July the Thunder Moon
August the Harvest Moon
September the Coon Moon
October the Acorn Moon
November the Frost Moon
December the Long Night Moon

The artist, Mark Siegel and drawn wonderful representations, taken from nature; from the out of doors, and given us twelve charcoal renderings and impressions of each of these full moons. He has captured the feeling and essence of each perfectly. The deep blues, grays, purples and blacks have hit the mood perfectly for each season of the year. Each picture is accompanied by Rylant's haunting words...

In January
The Stormy Moon Shines
in mist,
in ice,
on a wild wolf's back
find it
and find your way home.

The combination of word and picture is quite profound and you can actually feel yourself as a part of the illustration and words. Now mind you I have spent a great deal of my life as a chronic walker in the night and probably feel more at home during this period than any other time, during any season. I suppose I felt particularly at home with this work and am drawn to it.

Moon light is said to show us the other side of what we see during the day. Moon light has the ability to change the shape and mood, the very essence of what is and what is not. Somehow the artist has captured this through his work and has interpreted the author's words perfectly.

One of my favorite children's books is When I was Young in the Mountains by the same author, Cynthia Rylant, and the same quality that is found in that work shines through in this one.

This book should indeed be a part of ever child's library, and indeed, ever adults. I cannot recommend it high enough. Read it and then go out walking in the field, far from any city or town and you will know what I am talking about!

Text and illustrations depict the varied seasonal full moons that change and assume personalities of their own throughout the year.

Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked this book out at our local library for my two year old daughter because she loves dogs and the beach. It turned out to be such a big hit that I am buying it! She of course can't read, but enjoyed the story and pictures very much. She loves Mudges playfullness and had just been to the beach recently so she could relate to Henry and his father playing in the water. The length of the story is just right also for her. It's a wonderful book and we are buying two more from the series besides this one!

Great Beach Reading for the Younger Set 5 out of 5 stars.

My 1st grader just loves Henry and Mudge books. They are "chapter" books-- and not "baby" books. But, they are easy to read. (Easier than Magic Tree House, for example.) Plus, this series appeals to both boys and girls (but especially boys).

This particular books captures the essence of going on a trip to the beach: the anticipation, the long drive, the waves, the crabs. This book would also make a good read-aloud for a younger child about to go on a trip to the beach.

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

With this Level 2 focus on independent reading skills, kids will more readily move from beginning reader to enjoying more complex tales with paragraphs and short chapters. What better place to start than with Henry and Mudge & The Funny Lunch, Cynthia Rylant's zany story of kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch ever ? against all odds?color drawings add to the appeal.

Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat". My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day. If you love the series, get it. If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.

Editorial Review:

Every year Henry and his dad (with help from Mudge, of course) make Henry's mother a funny lunch for Mother's Day. Shopping for their juicy, crunchy surprise is fun, and preparing it is even more fun. But sharing it with Henry's mother is the most fun of all!

In Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble you'll see how kids sometimes don't listen to their parents even when they want to. When Henry doesn't listen to his mother's advice about the Morning Glory will he able to fix the problems it causes? Find out why listening to your parents is important when you read this book. If you are the kind of kid who doesn't listen to your mom then this is the book for you. Check out other books in the Henry and Mudge series like Henry and Mudge and the Best Test.

These are such wonderful books about a boy named Henry and the frienship that he shares with his big 180 pound dog Mudge. Nice Illustrations and easy to understand stories. They are great books and my 9 year old nephew loved these when he was in second grade. I bought some of these for him when he was 7. Now my son Ramon who is 7 loves them too.

My nephew Wyatt Condon who is now 9 loved these books when he was in second grade. Now my youngest son Ramon who is 7 and in the second grade now loves them. He loves the stories, the illustrations and they are easy to read but not too babyish for children in 1st to 2nd grade. Henry and Mudge books are loved and enjoyed by both of these cousins.

What's wrong with Henry's new tree house?

In Henry and Mudge's twenty-first adventure, Henry's Uncle Jake has built him a tree house. Henry loves tree houses, but Mudge can't climb trees. What fun is a tree house if you can't share it with your best friend?

wonderfully evocative book to share with your child 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is such an enchanting book to read to a child! The illustrations (realistic in style) are beautiful and the text is lyrical, reflecting the mood of the season perfectly. My son loves this book and I love reading it to him. The pictures and story remind us both of the family gatherings that are so much a part of November and December. We read many books together and this is one of our lasting favorites.

Beautiful Artwork 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love the art in this book. One of my major complaints with a lot of kids books, is that they are too cartoonish. This book is NOT like that at all - very rich watercolor drawings make this enjoyable for adults as well as kids.

Editorial Review:

In November, the air grows cold and the earth and all of its creatures prepare for winter. Animals seek food and shelter. And people gather together to celebrate their blessings with family and friends.
Cynthia Rylant's lyrical language and Jill Kastner's rich, cozy paintings capture the cherished moments of this autumn month--the moments we spend together and the ones we witness in the world around us.

An Angel For Solomon Singer (by a 5 year-old reviewer) 5 out of 5 stars.

I think it is one of the most perfect books ever. Since my mom bought it, well,I'm encouraged. Because I'm a student, I could have it for my schoolbook. If I could give it ten billion stars, I'd yell out, "Hey, Solomon Singer!" (Giggle!)

An Angel for Solomon Singer (By Christopher,a 7-year-old homeschooler) 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I like this book because it's very creative. It shows a lot of thought. Solomon learns a lesson to use his imagination more. He knows he cannot have balconies, change his walls a different color. And that is why he did not like his hotel at all. The author doesn't use simple words. For example, he doesn't say "a quiet voice said..." He says "a quiet voice like Indiana pines in November said..."
I recommend this book for all people.

WHAT A HAUNTING, PROFOUND STORY...... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is one of those works that will stick with you. It is rather difficult to discribe. I do note, after talking to several people, and reading several reviews on this site and others, that each person who reads this one finds something a bit different. Myself, I was haunted, in a good way, and yet disturbed at the same time. The wonderful prose pulls you into this unknown mans life. The wonderful art work keeps you there. I personally love the work. I do recommend though, that it would probably be best to read this one with the young reader rather than let them try it by themselves for the first time. I find it difficult to think that a very young person would be able to identify with the lonely man in this story nor understand just what is happening (as a matter of fact, after several readings, I'm not all that sure myself, and I am as old as dirt). Be that as it may, this is certainly one worth giving a read, several reads as a matter of fact!

Wonderful stories!! Life as it is!! Having read these stories aloud to adults in nursing homes on numerous occassion and found them to satisfy our need to hear good resolves, we can all recommend this good read. "A Bad Road for Cats", one of the favorites, that hits the hard realities of human relationships and good resolves in our dealing with others when things aren't right. Stories of people finding there way through realationships with others and the place that animals play in our lives to make bridges. Read them! You will love them if you love people and animals. Write more of these Cynthia!

Touching stories about people and animals 4 out of 5 stars.

"Every Living Thing," by Cynthia Rylant, is a collection of 12 short stories. Although different characters appear in each tale, the collection as a whole is unified by style and by theme. Each story deals with an encounter or ongoing relationship between a human being and one or more non-human animals. Since the book is only 81 pages long, each tale is quite brief.

This is a gentle, moving book. Rylant has a gift for capturing resonant details. She also writes with great compassion for both her human and non-human characters. Her non-human characters come in many different species: a turtle, dogs, a parrot, squirrels, and more. Her human characters are also diverse: both adults and children, both male and female. I found one of the most memorable characters to be an alcoholic wartime veteran (from "Drying Out").

My overall favorite story in the collection, "A Pet," is about a girl who becomes the owner of a blind old goldfish. I would recommend this book especially to those interested in the short story as a literary form and to those interested in literature about animals. If you like this book, I would also recommend Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's novel "Shiloh."

Editorial Review:

Here are twelve deeply moving short stories from the perceptive pen of Cynthia Rylant. Each captures the moment when someone's life changes -- when an animal causes a human being to see things in a different way, and, perhaps, changes his life.

As always, Poppleton is a joy to read 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This latest book of Poppleton is just as sweet and gentle as the others, and it is easy reading for my 2nd grader. You can't go wrong with this book. "The Bust" chapter is the funniest with Cherry Sue, in which Poppleton wants to sculpt a bust of Cherry Sue, but can't remember what she looks like. "The Icicles" chapter in which he meets a clumsy little finch, Patrick, and the "Sleigh Ride" are also good-natured stories that bring the feel of winter to the reader which is perfect for the upcoming snowy season.

Editorial Review:

In this easy-to-read chapter book, Poppleton the pig charms young readers with his quirky adventures and whimsical ideas! Poppleton grows an icicle garden and ends up with an icicle fence instead. He sculpts a bust of Cherry Sue without explaining his constant visits just to look at her face. And he wonders why he can't find a friend to go on a sleigh ride with. No one can go, because they're all preparing Poppleton's birthday party!

These hilarious stories feature simple language, everyday experiences, and beautiful illustrations--perfect for beginning readers!

Praise for the POPPLETON series:
