Great for pre-schoolers! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter is 3 and LOVES all of the Poppleton books. The three stories within one book combine fun and silliness with subtle points about friendship, sharing or kindness. Rylant's "Mr. Putter and Tabby..." series are also at the top of our Favorites List.

If you read the Poppleton series you will learn from how to he treats his friends and how his friends treat him. Do you want to be tough and helpful? Then read Poppleton. Even though Poppleton looses his temper sometimes, he is still a good character. So check for Poppleton in the library, at the store, or read it at school. Poppleton is the book for you.

Review by Maelle

If you want to learn about friendship, you should read Poppleton Forever. Poppleton learns if you're mean and you're sorry friends will usually forgive you.

If you ever thoght Poppleton doesn't loose his temper, you were wrong. He looses his temper in Poppleton Forever in the chapter Wallpaper. His friends didn't put up the wallpaper like he wanted. And Poppleton yelled at them. They were nice and came over just to help him. I don't think you should yell at your friends. It might make them not want to be his friends.

Read other Poppleton books. These are good for second graders and 6-7 year olds.

Editorial Review:

In three charming new stories, Poppleton the pig gets help from his friends when his new tree begins to wilt; when he catches a cold; and later, when he decides to wallpaper his house. Learning is great for Poppleton, but it's much better when it's done with friends. Full color.

Read to your Kids! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What can I say about the Henry And Mudge series? What can't I say about it? It's wonderful, delightful, sweet, and gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling when reading it aloud to your kids! I have read all of the books to my son when he was little and we both loved them. Mudge is big and lovabale and Henry is smart and kind and his parents give him good morals and values to live by. It's very funny and I would recommend this series (which are well into the 20's) for people with children between the ages of 3-5. I do have to say though, that I like the books that are illustrated by Sucie Stevenson the best. She draws Mudge with a much gentler expression to his face. All in all, I highly recommend Henry and Mudge! And if you do like this series, you may also enjoy the Mr. Putter series...also by Cynthia Rylant.

Editorial Review:

Henry and his 180-pound dog Mudge are best friends forever. And in this seventh book of their adventures, they spend a scary but reassuring day at the vet.

Amazing New Book for Young Readers 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Pandora the cat; Seabold the dog; and Whistler, Lila, and Tiny, the orphaned mice, make-up the wonderful, Lighthouse Family. Together they live amongst each other in an old Lighthouse on the water, where they help to direct ships. However, one day Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a whale, a baby beluga whale named Sebastian, to be exact. Soon they have found that poor Sebastian has lost his Mother, and doesn't know where to find her. It's now up to Whistler and Lila, with the help of the rest of the Lighthouse Family, and a cranky old cormorant named Huck, to find Sebastian's Mother, and bring mama and baby together once again.

In this wonderful, adorable new series by Cynthia Rylant, we are introduced to various wonderful new animal characters, who are sure to rival those found in classics such as THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. Each character is unique, and possesses his or her own quirks, yet they all share one thing in common, their love for each other, and caring nature. Filled with wonderful sketches by Preston McDaniels amongst almost every page, as well as a delightful plot that will please all young readers, THE WHALE is sure to be a hit.

Editorial Review:

Pandora, Seabold, Whistler, Lila, and Tiny have all been enjoying the love and comfort that being a family brings. It is a comfort they are unexpectedly reminded of when Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a lonely baby beluga whale named Sebastian. When they learn that he has lost his mama, the Lighthouse Family, with the help of a cranky but noble old cormorant named Huck, does all it can to bring Sebastian and his mother together again.

"There will be light in every dark place" 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

In her usual lyrical style, Cynthia Rylant reminds us that all will be well as long as the important things in life are available: people who love us, pets curled up close, peach pie, and stars that shine. The rhyming text takes the readers through the year, outlining the constants that will come to pass: the stars will shine, flowers will bloom, birds will fly. And in her life-affirming worldview, Rylant reminds us that "there will be goodness...there will be grace." Beeke's soft watercolors illustrate family and friends and flowers and stars in all their colorful variety. This would be a lovely bedtime read-aloud -- or even a bedtime prayer -- for people of all ages.

Editorial Review:

Comforting affirmations of the goodness life offers.

Written in response to troubled times by one of the most celebrated children's book authors of all time, this comforting book is one that children and parents will want to return to when outside conflicts seem overwhelming. Rejoicing in the goodness of daily life with unforced spirituality, Cynthia Rylant's gentle verse becomes more powerful with each reading. Matching the pure reverence of the voice, Tiphanie Beeke's luminous watercolors bring a peaceful and uplifted feeling. Like a prayer, this is soothing at bedtime and is a meaningful gift for anyone facing a crisis or starting anew.

Great book, heavy subject matter 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This story is about a young girl who loses the closest thing she had to a mother and how she grieves. The book is very well written, obviously, as it is a Newberry winner. It really shows the stages of emotion that Summer, the main character goes through and helps children to understand how to hang on to hope. For children that do not have many ideas about death, the book may seem pretty uneventful since a lot of the pages are simply filled with Summer's thoughts about losing May. For children that maybe have experienced a loss and are ready to grieve or children that want to know more or are concerned about death (which they do need to learn about sometime), this book is a beautiful story about accepting loss and choosing to live life day by day, knowing you will keep the memories, but that not all hope is lost.

Editorial Review:

When May dies suddenly while gardening, Summer assumes she'll never see her beloved aunt again. But then Summer's Uncle Ob claims that May is on her way back--she has sent a sign from the spirit world.Summer isn't sure she believes in the spirit world, but her quirky classmate Cletus Underwood--who befriends Ob during his time of mourning--does. So at Cletus' suggestion, Ob and Summer (with Cletus in tow) set off in search of Miriam B. Young, Small Medium at Large, whom they hope will explain May's departure and confirm her possible return.

Riding a train. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a reminder of how pleasant it is to ride the train, even though they do smuggle their pets on-board.

Charming but be aware the message you're sending 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love the Mr Putter books as well as Cynthia Rylant's work in general. This book is a charming addition to the series, and one especially good for kids who love vehicles/trains as my little boy does. **However, if you're trying to be super-careful about what moral messages you send your kids, you should know the plot before you buy this story. Pets are not allowed on trains, so Mr Putter & Mrs Teaberry _smuggle_ Tabby and Zeke onto the train with them. Not so good for teaching kids to respect rules...**

The bottom line: I read this book with my son because we both enjoy it, but eventually he will start to notice how Mr Putter breaks the rules and we'll have to have a discussion about it.

Editorial Review:

Mr. Putter and his fine cat, Tabby, are going for a train ride with their neighbors, Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog, Zeke. They've planned the perfect afternoon trip. But when they get to the station, they're in for a big surprise: No pets are allowed on the train! It looks like the trip is off, until Mr. Putter comes up with a clever idea.

Cobble Street Cousins - Special Gifts 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The "special gift" is this book and the entire series of Cobble Street Cousins. I am the proud mother of four lovely daughters and what a pleasure to find such a sweetly written book. I have recommended this book to friends with daughters and they have loved it as well. It is hard to find a morally appropriate, light, non-violent book for young girls. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the type of book all little girls should grow up on.

Editorial Review:

MEET THE COBBLE STREET COUSINS

Lily, who wants to be a poet.
Tess, who wants to be a Broadway star.
Rosie, who wants a little cottage with flowers by the door.

It's winter vacation and there's no school for three weeks, but the Cobble Street Cousins aren't worried about being bored. They're learning how to sew from their neighbor Mrs. White. And they're starting to keep a diary about their year living in the wonderful attic room in Aunt Lucy's little blue house. Best of all, there's a Winter Solstice party at Aunt Lucy's boyfriend Michael's apartment, with special presents for everyone.

fun and feminine 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My daughter loves these books! They are filled with warm, happy relationships, fun craft projects and girlish adventures she can relate too. Junie B. Jones is a lot of fun, but my daughter is a softer, gentler person, and these gentle books fill her imagination. She loves to imagine herself in the attic with Tess.

fabulously written, very appropriate content for younger readers! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is nearly five and reads these on her own, so it's very important to me that the content is appropriate for her to read without parental guidence. Not only is this entire series content appropriate, they are wonderfully written! My daughter simply could not stop reading until we finished the entire series. These books may be read out of order, though it's best to read book 1 first and book 6 last. The others could be jumbled and read in any order. :) The other day I asked my daughter what she wanted for her birthday, and she said she'd like another "cobble street cousin" book for every day of the year. I wish Cynthia Ryland had written as many. They are truly little gems of literature!

COBBLE STREET COUSINS

  • Lily, who wants to be a poet

Lily has a wonderful idea -- to surprise Aunt Lucy with a dollhouse that looks just like her flower shop. But first the girls have to buy a few things at The Olde Craft Shoppe, and with the Cobble Street Cousins, even a little shopping trip can turn into an adventure!

A delightful tale about rediscovering the joy of living through companionship 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a story about a fundamental human need, that of companionship. Mr. Putter is an old man who lives alone, has muffins in the morning and tea in the afternoon. He works in his yard during the day, but there is no one to do it with. Therefore, Mr. Putter decides to get a cat.
He goes to a store, but all they have is kittens, which have too much energy for him. The clerk suggests that he go to a shelter, which he does. While there, he finds an old yellow cat whose bones creak; hair is thinning and appears to be a little deaf. All characteristics shared by Mr. Putter.
Once he gets the cat home, he names him Tabby. They hit it off immediately, becoming the best of friends and Mr. Putter is once again enjoying life. It is a charming book with a powerful and correct social message about how the elderly live their lives.

Editorial Review:

"The gentle, affecting first volume introduces elderly Mr. Putter, who decides that a cat will keep him from feeling lonely. Rylant’s texts reflect admirable concern for brevity and meticulous consideration of every word. They are in perfect sync with Howard’s expressive sketches, which slip abundant visual jokes into sunny, transparent watercolors and gouaches, and fluid pencil and pastel scribbles."--Publishers Weekly
