Best set for reluctant readers 5 out of 5 stars.

I had a heck of a time getting my six year old to WANT to read anything. It was constant whining and "do I have to?". I crossed one of these books by chance at my workplace and brought it home. Now my daughter can't get enough and begs to read. She reads in the car in the morning and at bedtime. In a few short months she has really built up her vocabulary and reading proficiency. I don't know how this author figured it out, but he knows what keeps a child engaged! I got the whole set of books and she read through them, a couple chapters at a time, over the summer.

Great book for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

Here's my 9-year-old son's review:

I think this book is appropriate for kids, because it has funny stories about kids you don't see every day and kids who do strange but hilarious things. It's even more fun that the author uses himself as a character in the book - the yard teacher. He must have thought the book through really well, because it's full of interesting details. I read all three books in 5 evenings.

Editorial Review:

"If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy." Such is the reigning philosophy at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility where there is no lake, and there are no happy campers. In place of what used to be "the largest lake in Texas" is now a dry, flat, sunburned wasteland, pocked with countless identical holes dug by boys improving their character. Stanley Yelnats, of palindromic name and ill-fated pedigree, has landed at Camp Green Lake because it seemed a better option than jail. No matter that his conviction was all a case of mistaken identity, the Yelnats family has become accustomed to a long history of bad luck, thanks to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!" Despite his innocence, Stanley is quickly enmeshed in the Camp Green Lake routine: rising before dawn to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet in diameter; learning how to get along with the Lord of the Flies-styled pack of boys in Group D; and fearing the warden, who paints her fingernails with rattlesnake venom. But when Stanley realizes that the boys may not just be digging to build character--that in fact the warden is seeking something specific--the plot gets as thick as the irony.

It's a strange story, but strangely compelling and lovely too. Louis Sachar uses poker-faced understatement to create a bizarre but believable landscape--a place where Major Major Major Major of Catch-22 would feel right at home. But while there is humor and absurdity here, there is also a deep understanding of friendship and a searing compassion for society's underdogs. As Stanley unknowingly begins to fulfill his destiny--the dual plots coming together to reveal that fate has big plans in store--we can't help but cheer for the good guys, and all the Yelnats everywhere. This is an absolute Louis Sachar classic! My own first grade teacher read this to me, and now I am reading it to my first grade students.

If you do not appreciate the weird mind of Sachar, you will probably not appreciate this book. If you do, however, this is a keeper. The stories are short, clever, random, and even sometimes with the occasional moral.

Kids can identify to the sufferings of the kids--there is such a huge selection--as well as laugh along with the insanity of a thirty-story building.

Plus, the reading level is perfect for up-and-coming readers. Awesome for read-alouds.

Editorial Review:

The Wayside School was supposed to be one story high, with 30 classrooms side by side; instead, it was built sideways, with 30 one-classroom stories. As befits such a strange school, these tales are a bit strange too. In one, Jason is stuck to his seat by a large wad of chewing gum. His teacher tries throwing ice water on him (to chill the gum to brittleness) and turning him upside down. She even contemplates cutting his pants off. Finally, though, he falls from his upside-down position when kissed (ugh!) by one of the girls in the class. Other tales include a bit of a moral, such as the story of Kathy, whose assumption that no one will ever like her is proved right, or the story of Bebe, who draws quickly but without artistic merit. The quirky humor in this book is appealing to children, and it makes a good read-aloud book for the younger set. (Ages 5 to 12) --Richard Farr

4th Grade Class Top Ten Winner 5 out of 5 stars.

This review is for There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom. It was written by Louis Sachar. This book is funny fiction.
Bradley Chalkers is a mean bully that bullies everyone in the school. He tells so many lies. Jeff Fishkin is a nice kid that is not a bully. Carla is a counselor who is trying to help Bradley learn to be nice. Will Bradley turn nice and be friends with Jeff or will he stay like a bully? Which boy enters the girl's bathroom? Read to find out more.
The author's message is if you want to have friends you have to be nice. The other lesson is to be yourself at a birthday party. It is on our class's top 10 because it is funny. Also it has some great lessons.

Must read 5 out of 5 stars.

I think every child, parent, and teacher should read this book - it is wonderful and inspiring - helping us to see the good in everyone. I read this to my kids when they were in elementary school, and I think it helped shape their concern for others - gave them the desire to look out for the underdog. Sometimes we have no idea the struggles that others are faced with - and it helps us all to realize that some folks burdens really are hard to carry. Maybe we will all be better off by being a bit more forgiving of others shortcomings. Hope this book is as beneficial to you as it has been for our family.

This is not a story 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My 10 year-old loves Louis Sachar in general and the Wayside books in particular. After devouring the 3 in the boxed set, he begged for more Wayside School stories. I searched amazon and found this and ordered it and he was so excited when it arrived that he dropped what he was playing and tore upstairs to read it.

He came down in 5 minutes - SO disappointed. He claimed the book 'is not the same'. I took a look and sure enough - it's a book of puzzles. There is no narrative, no story.

Maybe the puzzles are fun - but we were looking for a story. Personally I don't think that the description here made it clear that this is not in fact a story. I wouldn't have ordered this book if I'd realized what it was.

If you're looking for puzzles - go for it. If you're hoping (as we were) for another installment in the Wayside School stories - this is NOT it.

Wayside School is Falling Down by D18 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Do you like funny stories about school? How about books on zany teachers? If your answer is "yes" then this is totally the book for you! With 30 wacky stories, Wayside School is Falling Down, by Louis Sacher, is one of those `hard-to-put-down' books. The story all starts when the architect who built the school built it with 30 classrooms on top of each other instead of side-by-side. If you think that's a weird beginning, try imagining a teacher teaching her class to make pickles, a girl who saves a boy's life by pulling him in through a 30th story window by the girl's pigtails, and a class where nobody is weird because nobody's normal! With fantasy as its genre, Wayside School is Falling Down not only includes all those and more, but is a great book for comedy-lovers of all ages!

Editorial Review:

Donýt pick on Marvin ýcuz we all do it! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Let's face it, kids can be cruel. Marvin Redpost goes to 3rd grade where kids are kids and adults sometimes don't investigate the situation completely.

While playing ball, Marvin is accused of picking his nose by the class bully. Like most bullies, he is just looking for something to taunt Marvin with and nose picking happens to be it. Of course, Marvin wasn't, and of course, it upsets him. He tries to stand up for himself, but everyone is so caught up in how funny-gross it is that no one is listening. The trouble starts with neither Marvito the wound. Very soon, Martin himself, now friendless, begins believing that he's a disgusting person. That is, until inspiration strikes and he finds out that we're really all very much alike (I'll not spoil the ending for you!!)

Sachar has done a tremendous job of taking the subject of bullying and elementary school obsession and putting it into a very readable form for young children. Bullies will bully and try to turn everyone against that one poor soul they don't care for at any chance they get. What often gives them more power, oddly enough, is the victim denying the bully's accusation; in this case, Marvin vehemently saying that he DOESN'T pick his nose. By Marvin constantly talking about it, he's actually feeding into the situation without knowing it. Better in these cases to ignore it and let it drop.

However, most elementary school children don't realize the power of ignoring mean comments like that or realize that the person doing the bullying will soon get bored with the whole thing if you don't respond. Though this tactic wasn't taken in "Why Pick on Me?", it's still a good suggestion for the "alternative solution" crowd who may use this in schools.

Sachar also treats the subject matter with tact, knowing that nose picking can reduce a class to screams of "eeeeew!" in a heartbeat. He doesn't add unnecessary details about the act, but nor does he shy away from it. Therefore this book is very likely to draw in even reluctant readers because they'll want to see what happens next!! In a world where we could all use a little more respect, Marvin shows us that we're all the same: human.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in black-and-white. Marvin is shunned by his classmates, best friends, and teacher after he is unfairly fingered as a nose-picker by the class bully. "It will be an underground classic, an easy reader that kids are dying to read."--(starred) Bulletin, Center for Children's Books.

This Book Is Intersting To Read! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really like this book called Marvin Redpost: Kidnapped at Birth. Marvin is a 9 year old boy who is always getting in trouble. In this story Marvin is kidnapped by strangers. Marvin tries to get to mom and dad, who are the King and Queen. Marvin said he had the wrong family. Louis Sachar is the author. I like this book because it is sometimes funny and sometimes it has really cool pictures. Sometimes Marvin books are hard and sometimes they are easy. It is the right book for me and it is good for the other 3rd grade also.

Engrossing story 5 out of 5 stars.

My son is not a strong reader, dislikes reading immensely, and can usually get through only three or four pages of a book before he starts complaining to stop. However, he wouldn't put this book down - he read all 67 pages over the course of an afternoon without stopping, and then immediately began a report on the book. (He had already read a book for a book report; the report was complete, but he liked this book so much that he started over.)

Furthermore, he asked for the rest of the series! Multiple firsts; thank you, Louis Sachar.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in black-and-white. Marvin Redpost has finally figured out why he doesn't look like anyone in his family. He's not really Marvin Redpost--he's Robert, the lost prince of Shampoon! "The story is wonderfully logical and absurd, with a wit and attention to detail rare in an easy reader."--Bulletin, Center for Children's Books. "Fast paced, easy to read, and full of humor."--School Library Journal.

Lots of fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I love incorporating words with math! It makes it fun and interesting. I am not big on math (nor am I very good at it), but when you incorporate language, it makes it fun. I really found this enjoyable! You do neet time, paper, and a darn good eraser, but this was a blast! It has the same kind of stories as the other Wayside books, but it incorporates math problems to go with it. (BOYS + GIRLS = SILLY) And it's your job to figure out number substitutes for the letters. It's a lot of fun to do, and improves math skills and language skills. It's a blast!
It's harder than the first one, be warned! But it's also more fun and entertaining. I always used it as like a rainy day project, and I plan to do the same with my daughter.

Great Book for a Math/Logic Wiz 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I had this book when I was in fifth grade, and I absolutely loved it. I was already a big fan of the Wayside books, and I also liked math so these books were the perfect combination for me. I even remember working through the entire book multiple times. I especially loved the early problems wtih the convertion of basic math equations with letters to numbers like BOYS + BOYS = GIRLS and stuff like that. Now I am a physics major in college so I guess I came out pretty well. This book (and the first as well) is highly recommended for any kid who likes the Wayside books and also enjoys math/logic puzzles. Who knows, maybe this kid will be working with Schrodinger's equation in several years.

Editorial Review:

A sequel to the original collection of brain twisters and math puzzles includes ""How much is PEPPERS + PIG LIPS?"" and ""If Jenny's shirt has sparkles on it, will Todd have egg in his hair?""

Do you like secrets? Are you the kind of person who can keep secrets? If the answer to those questions is yes then Sixth Grade Secrets by Louis Sachar is the book for you.
This book is a relatively quick read, 201 pages, with lots of interesting characters. Some of the characters are Laura Sibi, Gabriel and Tiffany but there are a lot more. Sixth Grade Secrets is realistic fiction and the description was so real and thought out that it made me feel like everything was going on in my own school, or at least going on some where. I would have to say this book is the best fast read I have ever read. Sixth Grade Secrets is a good book for people ages 10 and up who like realistic fiction with a little action mixed in.
This book is very different from Holes or Small Steps, which are also by Louis Sachar. But in this case, different is a good thing. This is a really great story about what goes on in sixth grade and I can really relate to it because I am in sixth grade.
