Richard Scarry's Best Word Book 5 out of 5 stars.

My adult children grew up with an ealier version of this book. I taught 1st and 2nd grades for 30 years and realize the value of literature in the home. Even though this book is not a form of literature, it is a great tool for vocabulary building. I bought this current book as a Christmas present for my new grandson, who will be 3 1/2 months old at Christmas.

Odd but useful 5 out of 5 stars.

While there are some oddities in the book (like the parents sleeping in separate beds and Mommy Cat always wearing a dress), it's still a good and solid introduction for vocabulary building. Every page has every item labeled in a variety of situations and places: home, the kitchen, the living room, the laundry room, school, the grocery store, an ice cream parlor, and so forth. It also introduces the basic parts of the body, color theory and counting.

Richard Scarry's books often times contain a running gag of some sort. In Cars and Trucks and Things That Go, readers are asked to find Gold Bug on every page. In this book, readers can follow Mr. Fumble as he tries to catch his windblown hat.The question of where's Mr. Fumble's hat and the often times surreal things depicted and labeled are what make these books so much fun to read.

My kids love it! 5 out of 5 stars.

We've had to buy another copy of this book as the first one had to be given away when we moved overseas. Our kids begged us to buy another one so our youngest child would not grow up without it!

my baby loves her biggest book- it's strong and covered 5 out of 5 stars.

my baby loves her biggest book- it's strong and covered with the pictures and words she loves, and for me, I grew up with Scarry, so I feel good about what she is learning.

Biggest Response Ever 5 out of 5 stars.

we gave this to our four-year-old grandson. we then spent much of the days that followed reading and laughing at its contents (and learning some things too).

understatement: it was a huge hit. even if you have other scarrys -- and the content of this one does overlap the content of some other titles -- its format makes it special.

recommended without reservation!

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "Two feet high, this board book is as tall as a toddler. Scarry packs countless pictures of his characters on the wide pages, each perky creature identified by a short word or phrase. Strongly constructed, it's a can't-fail item for small boys and girls."--Publishers Weekly.

love richard scary but some of these nursery rhymes are sexist 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm 6 months pregnant and while I know I'm a little early, I had to order my beloved Richard Scary books from childhood. They did not disappoint--especially the Best Little Word Book Ever-- and were just as I remembered them...however, upon thumbing through some of the nursery rhymes, I noticed that at least a couple were sexist. I know, I know, they were written long ago and that's the way things were (and still are in most cases). But "I met a man with seven wives?" Or the hen one in which the rooster sits in the chair and tells how great his wife is because she is his maid and cook? Or the bear one in which the bear tells how he had to go "to London to buy a wife?" There are so many other nursery rhymes out there that I wish they'd replaced these few with...

Great presentation of nursery stories 5 out of 5 stars.

So many mother goose out there, and most are very nicely done. This one, however, caught my attention because it utilizes the familiar busytown characters which I feel children so easily identify with as opposed to books with illustrations of children from long ago. Those are great too but this one should not be overlooked.

Superb--Great First Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The storyline is very simple, a good complement to illustrations that are colorful and detailed enough to hold the attention of very young children. We got this when my first son was about 9 mos. old; within the next year he had it memorized and could "read" it to us. My son is now 22 (YEARS old) and my husband and I can still recite the book . . .

this is a great book to teach aobut seasons and bring in new vocabulary and it is a great book because it is for toddlers but it is a board book so it can withstand younger siblings.

It's dry and it doesn't smell bad 5 out of 5 stars.

This book arrived very dry, which is good. Also, it doesn't smell bad like our other one did. Not that it smell good, mind you. I don't know if I'd say that it smells good, but it sure doesn't smell bad. Our last one smelled like cat pee and was wet. This one is way better. Besides, our boy loves this book.

Editorial Review:

I am a bunny. My name is Nicholas. I live in a hollow tree.

In the spring, Nicholas likes to sniff the flowers, and in the summer, watch the frogs in the pond. In the fall, he watches the animals getting ready for winter, and in winter, watches the snow falling from the sky. This beautifully illustrated, gentle story is one of Golden’s most beloved titles.

Great activity book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have taught Kindergarten and never liked the use of activity books/sheets, etc... . My 4 yr old daughter loves busytown and asked for this when she saw it on Amazon. I bought it against my will only to find that it actually had some really nice things for her to do. It wasnt just filled with "practice" sheets; although there were some of those with tracing letters and numbers. It had a section for her to make a mobile, make a paper town and even had an assortment of national flags that she could decorate with. The ideas and projects are very traditional and most children dont get to do these kinds of projects or have ever heard of them. When she made the flags, other children that came to our home didnt even know that other countries had flags. She learned quite a bit from this book such as: flags to other countries, holiday pracitces, writing her letters and numbers, sequencing and patterning. There were pages that were just for coloring which she didnt have an interest in but I thought they were nice illustrations that most children would enjoy. Dot to dot was also in the book, as was making mothers day cards, fathers day cards, valentines day cards, and thank you cards which was nice to teach children to do after receiving something. There was also a place to make bookmarks, bookplates, and easter decorations (other holiday decorations too). Most of the projects, for my daughters age required me working with her as opposed to her working on her own, but it was enjoyable for me as well as Richard Scarry does a nice job with his writing and illustraions.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My three year old twins are enjoying this new book. So far their favorite stories are "The Naughty Reindeer" and "Terrible Teddy Bear". I can see that this will book will be read during the Christmas season for many years to come!

Golden Books reprints 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Four stars because this book is so wonderful, but Golden Books has a nasty habit of making some deletions when reprinting their classics. There are also a few pages missing from the reprinted "Santa's Toy Shop," another Christmas favorite.

Four stars anyway because the deleted stories were not particular favorites of mine, but people who remember the original will be disappointed. Better this, however, than no Richard Scarry, and I do not want to discourage anyone from purchasing this marvelous book and reading it to the current generation of children. This is my 60th Christmas, and few of my Christmas memories are more precious than those wrapped up with this book.

Editorial Review:

Golden Books is proud to reissue this beloved Christmas collection, chock-full of funny animal stories and poems. This oversize format features Scarry’s earlier, more painterly style and makes a perfect gift. A true holiday treat for Scarry fans!

Long Search Finally Ends 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I must have read this Little Golden Book book to my daughter over 1000 times. She absolutely loved it as a child. Even though she had memorized the words she insisted on having it read to her every night and she caught me every time I tried to turn two pages at once.

For several years, she had unsuccessfully searched for this book so she could read it to her two sons aged 1 and 3. I was thrilled to see that it was recently re-published and available on Amazon[.com].

The story line involves a baby bear who hides on his father's shoulders when it is time for him to go to bed. The father bear "searches" all over the house for "little bear" who is nowhere to be found. At long last, the father bear looks in a mirror and discovers "little bear" who is perched on his shoulders. A simple story, but one which absolutely fascinated my daughter.

Another great little golden book 5 out of 5 stars.

I love the old little golden books, but I got a set for Christmas that are actually so annoying to read! This one is great, my daughter laughs out loud at this story.

More fun Scarry! 5 out of 5 stars.

My preschooler received this book in his Christmas stocking. We tuck it away to pull out on rainy days. Classic Scarry illustrations in a very creative format. This book is an A+++ in our home!

One of the best combinations of story and manipulatives for children 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is very entertaining, young children will be fascinated by it. Although it is only nine inches long, it folds out to an eight foot train. The premise is that Bananas Gorilla has lost his bananas and is searching the train for them. Bananas Gorilla goes from car to car, and there are captions at the bottom of the pages describing the search. As a combination of story and advanced manipulatives for young children, there is no question that this book is one of the best.

Editorial Review:

Poor Bananas Gorilla! He can't find his bananas anywhere!

Kids will delight in helping Bananas Gorilla find his lost bananas somewhere aboard this busy 8-foot-long freight train! Thanks to Richard Scarry's well-loved illustrations, lots of flaps to lift, and a movable crane, this hilarious pull-out book is sure to be a hit with children of all ages.

All aboard!

Disappointed in pop ups and story line. 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Many of the popups were stuck and had to be loosed. Then, some of the sliding tabs were so stiff, my 4 year old became frustrated. Most disappointing was the plot of trying to arrest Bananas Gorilla for stealing bananas. So many other fun things could have been the subject matter for this book. For example, the video of Mr. Frumble chasing his hat or the video on occupations (Busy People). Even the video with Sergeant Murphy chasing Bananas Gorilla ends up showing that the bananas really were Banana's Gorilla's bananas. At least that shows that we all can make mistakes.
The book appeals to children in preschool, yet most do not understand the intricasies of chasing someone all over town. Furthermore, wouldn't it have been better to have a view of the police that is helping, instead of punishing for this age group?

Editorial Review:

WHEN BANANAS GORILLA steals a truckload of bananas, he leads Sergeant Murphy on one of the most exciting chases ever! Follow the trail of banana peels through pages jam-packed with pop-up surprises, pull-tab thrills, and lift-the-flap silliness. Fans of Richard Scarry will love seeing his beloved Busytown characters literally pop off the pages!

LOVE IT! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My mom used to read this book to me ALL the time, and then we would talk about what she thought HER "baby bunny" would be. I'm now 27, and she still refers to me as "the baby bunny" because of this book. I am a 1st grade teacher, and today I got a good evaluation, and mom said, "Well, it sounds like the baby bunny has grown up to be a great teacher!"

Important careers 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This lovely story is about a bunny family who take turns guessing what the baby bunny might want to be when he grows up. Moving through a range of immediate and extended family members including Mum, Dad, brother, sister, Aunt, Uncle, Grandad, Grandma and cousins this is a great way to introduce concept of family and provide a talking point about family ties. The book also moves through a range of careers and ending with one of the most important jobs of all.. being a parent.

Editorial Review:

A daddy bunny plays with his baby bunny and says, “What will our baby be when he grows up?” Everyone, from the baby’s mother to big sister to Great Aunt Bunny, seems to know: a clown, a policeman, a candy store owner. But the baby only nibbles on his carrot and looks wise . . . for he knows he will grow up to be a nice daddy bunny!
