1st Birthday Memories... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for both my youngest daughter and our cousin, both who were turning one.

Of course this book is way too advanced for them but I brought it to their 1st birthdays and had everyone who was in attendance sign it. I love looking at all the adorable things people have said and can't wait to show it to them as they get older.

Doc's Most Imaginative Tale 5 out of 5 stars.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

When I was a child, this book took my breath away. I felt like I was living the incredible adventures in the story, from riding the Birthday Bird to choosing the tallest pet to eating the giant cake. I think this story inspired the adventures I try to create in my own writing.

Now that I'm a mom, I still love this book. It is a little long to hold the attention of toddlers or preschoolers, though, so I recommend it for Kindergarten & up.

fine children's book with lots to be learned 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! Is a charming book by the immortal Dr. Seuss who wrote many fine children's books in his time. Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! is no exception. This book encourages children to imagine and eventually explore the world without fear.

The book has excellent illustrations that amuse children--and adults; and the rhyming text always impresses me.

The book starts by encouraging children to use their imaginations to think up what other animals and/or places in the world may be like. This alone can stimulate a lot of conversation between you and your child about other places in the real world and what life is like there. This will go a long way toward teaching younger children about the world out there that one day they will be exploring for real. In addition, the book also has Dr. Seuss using his own imagination to give examples to children as to how to use their imaginations; we get words about foreign things and sounds like "guff" and "schlopp." This does a marvelous job of teaching children to always be optimistic.

The book has even more value. Younger children will profit from learning words critical to their growing vocabularies including yellow, blue, red, pink, black, white, night, day, left and right--and more! Excellent.

The book cover withstands some throwing around just in case your child accidentally mistreats it; and, as always, the paper quality of these books by Dr. Seuss is very good.

I highly recommend this fine children's book. It teaches much to both very young children and older children as well. Get this and enjoy it with your growing child!

I really like this book as the price was a great deal. Of course I think its better to have the individual books but I couldn't resist the price and its not too bulky for reading, although I wouldn't want the book to be any bigger.

This is a great book for anyone looking to buy Dr.Seuss books. Why buy 1 book when you get this one for less and it has 6 long stories.

A terrific bargain for Seuss lovers 5 out of 5 stars.

Most "compilation" children's books--books that collect a large number of originals into one volume--are horrible. They typically include only part of the original story, or only some of the pictures, or else they shrink the pictures in order to save space. This one, though, is the real deal--it's six complete Dr. Seuss books, collected under one cover but otherwise exactly the same as if you were buying the six originals. If your children love Dr. Seuss (are there any that don't?) then this will get you through a lot of bedtimes.

I should also emphasize one other point that has confused some new parents I have talked to: these are Dr. Seuss "big books", which are only suitable for children four and older (a couple of them won't work until your child is five or six, or didn't for mine). Younger children simply don't have the attention span to appreciate these stories. For them, you should stick to his "Beginner Books" (Green Eggs and Ham, Seven Apples up on Top, The Foot Book, etc.).

Like most celebrities, Dr. Seuss is a little too simple-minded 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a writer and a creator of children's stories, Dr. Seuss was absolutely brilliant; there is no doubt about that. But his childish view of of the Cold War, at his age, is unforgivable. Likening the difference between freedom and Communism to the difference between the location of butter on bread is frustrating, and demonstrates once again how our American celebrities are unbelievably idealistic and out of touch with the realities of the world.

Wars are often fought over dumb things 5 out of 5 stars.

This is what my 8 year old son got out of reading The Butter Battle Book and that you should always accept peoples differences. It is one of his favorite books and it is timeless.

Yep, This Is The One -- a review of "The Butter Battle Book" 4 out of 5 stars.

Well, this is the Seuss book that riles the feathers of some adults. It's got a definite anti-war theme and deals with the consequences of a military arms escalation.

Who's at war? It's the Yooks and the Zooks. Essentially the same sorts of people, they clash over whether bread should be eaten butter side up or down. The story is told from a little boys (?) perspective and is the only Seuss book I can recall that ends on an ominous note.

"Grandpa!" I shouted. "Be careful! Oh gee!
Who's going to drop it?
Will you...? Or will he..."
"Be patient," said Grandpa. "We'll see.
We will see..."

It's hard to say whether kids pick up on these various messages. My own impression is that they won't, unless you sit and have a chat with them. They will be far too busy listing to the clever rhymes and gazing at the wild Seussian artwork.

Meant for practice reading, the Accelerated Reading designation for "The Butter Battle Book" is 3.9 which means that end of year 3rd Graders should be able to read this book themselves without getting too frustrated by words they don't know.

The "Official" Interest Level is given as Preschool thru 2nd Grade, but that makes no sense given the reading level. And personally, I would say that it's more appropriate for First thru Fourth Graders.

My own two children showed moderate interest in the book and they are currently 6 and 8; boy and girl. They requested multiple reads and the book is a pretty good read-aloud. Not amongst Seuss' best, in my opinion. It IS definitely worth a read.

My 2 year-old loves Dr Seuss books and we decided to get this one in Spanish as we are raising him bilingual. It's very good for a translation as these books are extremely hard to translate.

!Excelente! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I never liked Green Eggs and Ham in English (or Fox in Socks either) because I found Sam so annoying. Give it up already, Sam, I don't like the blasted things! However, to my surprise I found myself really enjoying the translation into Spanish and I don't mind reading it over and over again to my kids. As a translator and conference interpreter myself, I'm delighted with the way the translators solved the rhythm transference. As a mom to bilingual children, I hope there are many more translations of English classics of the caliber of this one.

Some of the best of Dr. Seuss 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Here's a rare book that gives you more than it promises. While it's titled "Five Favorite Dr. Seuss Stories," you actually get EIGHT stories. That's because there's three extra ones ("The Zax," "Too Many Daves," and "What Was I Scared Of?") included with "The Sneetches and Other Stories."

It's hard to say enough good things about this book. You have a collection of delightful stories, fun wordplay ("I'll go to the far-away mountains of Tobsk / Near the river of Nobsk, and I'll bring back an obsk"), nice life lessons ("A person's a person no matter how small"), and some of the most imaginative artwork anywhere. I enjoy these as much as my kids (ages 3 and a half, and 2).

The only negative I can think of is that the book is rather large for a child to easily rest on his or her lap. If you're reading to your child, that's less of an issue.

If I HAD to pick, I'd say that "Sneetches" is our household's favorite story in this collection, followed by "Horton Hears a Who." But occasionally we'll opt for one of the others. It's good to have a selection of stories, because kids' interests change and they can suddenly decide a different one is the one they want to hear all the time.

Most of these stories are good for reading to your kids right from birth, because the rhyming play and colorful pictures are fun no matter the level of comprehension. The one exception is "Bartholomew and the Oobleck," which is a bit more involved story that probably is best for ages five and up.

Dated 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The racist elements of the book are certainly not out of the ordinary for 1950. (And they're much milder than in Seuss's cartoons of the 1940s.) However, I think many parents, and not just "stuffed shirts", will prefer not to invite their children to laugh, for example, at the idea of people with "eyes that slant." (The phrase is given strong emphasis -- "slant" is a rhyme word.) Obviously, I'm going to discuss such things with my daughter when she's old enough, and teach her to assess them for herself when she reads. But now she's only three, and I prefer to pass on to another book.

Great for adults, too! 5 out of 5 stars.

Purchased this book for a grandchild. I can only hope that whichever parent reads this to the child, they have as much fun as I did reading it to MY child. It IS fun--snuggle with your little one and start reading. Soon you will be both laughing. I believe the word "nerd" originated in this book.

A Lesser Known Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book left a strong impression on me as a child. One of only a few books that I remembered vividly and was anxious to get for my own young boys (who of course, loved it).

The story is great because it keeps building and building. There is a little violence (threatening to cut off Bartholomew's head), but that only made it more exciting for me as a young boy to read it.

A Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

I'd been searching for this book to read to my 2 year-old son. I remember just loving it and was sure he would. He does. It's just delightful to hear his astonishment every time another hat appears on Bartholomew's head. It's a must read for children of all ages.

This is a great book for kids ages 4-5 all the way through 8-10. It has a catchy story line about a boy of that age, his problem, how he plans to solve it, and finally the real solution. An upbeat read for kids these days. And, it's by Dr. Seuss.

the potential in every thing 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"If I ran the circus" starts off with a boy and an empty lot. I had a lot similar to this near my childhood home. This book played perfectly into my wild imagination of what one could make out of a seemingly uninteresting place. It made me see things in a different way, the possibility that was in every place and every thing. This book is wonderful. Calm Sneelock is worked into the plan. (Isn't it just typical that kids think of shopkeepers as friends?) This book is a big part of my childhood and now I am happy to share it with my kids to help them see the potential in everything. One just needs to use a bit of imagination -- a lesson for young and old.

Fun for kids. Tedious for adults 4 out of 5 stars.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

Ten Apples Up on Top is a good introduction to counting and addition for preschoolers. My 3-year-old loves it. He counts the apples on every page and never gets bored. Me, on the other hand - I would have liked the book to have more of a storyline.

Gosh I love this book! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Three animals compete in the first half of the book to see who can have the most apples on top of their head. During the second half of the book, they escape an angry mob, happily collide with an apple truck, and end up giving the entire town ten apples on their heads as well. (What fun! Ten apples up on top! We are not going to let them drop!)

This is a good book both for early readers, and for young children learning to talk. Very simple, rhyming vocabulary, of the sort with intuitive spellings (so much of English orthography is a mess...!)

Please note that I do not recommend the board book version at all. They cut out the entire second half of the book, as well as good parts of the first half. In addition, the board book is poorly constructed. Just wait and get the real version instead.
