What sets this book apart is that it is nicely organized and well written. 5 out of 5 stars.

There are a lot of solar system books that are pretty, but the writing is what sets this one apart. Good sized text that is easy to read, simple yet concise, and fun. The author also does a good job of conveying his excitement to the reader. He isn't just throwing out facts for memorizing.

Must-have for children! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2-year-old and 4-year-old both adore this book, and we've already read it at least 100 times. It's got amazing photographs and up-to-date information about the planets and their moons. Highly recommend!

Great book, great pictures 5 out of 5 stars.

Though this book is definitely for older kids, above 1st grade, it has some awesome pictures. The descriptions were very nice and as with most books about tornadoes has great information about what to do and not to do if you are in the path of a tornado.

Editorial Review:

With winds that can reach speeds of three hundred miles an hour and funnel clouds that can measure a mile in diameter, tornadoes leave enormous damage in their wake.

Now award-winning author Seymour Simon examines these twisting columns of air and destruction. With the clear, concise style he is noted for, Simon explains how tornadoes are formed, why and when they are most likely to occur, how scientists classify and track them -- and what to do if one touches down. Spectacular full-color photographs show this powerful phenomenon in action.

Learn about trains! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We thought our 4 yr old train fanatic had taught us everything we needed to know about all the different train cars, but this book had a lot more knowledge for us. It's one of his favorite books, and has large photographs of trains and train cars. I think this is a must-have for any train loving kid!

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

After reading this book, our 3 year old can name every type of rail car. We live near a busy line and he is quite fond of calling out the types of cars he sees.

pipes and people.

Seymour Simon's exploration of these very different trains and their uses, combined with his characteristically eye–catching full–color photographs, captures the beauty and power of steam trains, diesel trains, electric trains, and more –– all at work!

Editorial Review:

Did you know that your brain (yes, even yours) is roughly the size of a large grapefruit? Award-winning author Seymour Simon clearly and skillfully exposes the many wonders of the brain and nervous system in The Brain: Our Nervous System. Author of more than 150 children's books about science, including The Heart: Our Circulatory System, Muscles: Our Muscular System, and Bones: Our Skeletal System, Simon has a knack for piquing the curiosity of youngsters and clearly communicating scientific facts. The Brain, written for ages 8 and older, is a solid launching pad for further investigation of the organ that makes us who we are. Kids will love learning that our brains grow until we are 7 years old, that our spines have 33 vertebrae, and that our skulls are made of 28 bones. Large, full-color photographs and illustrations show the fascinating, if slightly nauseating, areas of the human brain--a positron computed tomography (PCT) photo, for example, shows the dramatically different levels of visual stimulation to the brain when your eyes are open or closed. Two to three paragraphs of large type per page, plus one full-bleed illustration per spread, help make The Brain just the right amount of information for one grapefruit-sized brain to take in. (Ages 8 and older) --Karin Snelson

Really good short last minute book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is really good. There are really big pictures that give you an image of what they are saying. The words are really big which makes it easy to read. Seymoue Simon talks about the relationship between humans and wolves. He talkes all about wolves. I think everyone should read this book!

Debunks some of the myths about wolves 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Even though nearly everyone has a close association with domesticated wolves, there is a common and unwarranted hysteria about them. This unwarranted thought process has led to them being reviled by many and hunted to near extinction. Plans by wildlife managers to re-introduce them into places like Yellowstone Park have met with strong and at times irrational resistance. This book is designed to set the record straight and to show wolves as they truly are.
Wolves are pack animals and very intelligent. While they are feared by many, instances of a healthy wolf engaging in an unprovoked attack trying to kill a human are unknown. Wolves generally hunt small game such as mice and rabbits, so left to themselves; they keep the undesirable animal numbers down. They rarely interact with humans, and even the instances of wolves attacking livestock appear to be exaggerated.
This book is an excellent primer on how wolves live. Humans have little to fear from them, more damage is done by domesticated wolves (dogs) per year than by wild wolves. By reading this book, you will know how they act, which is not so different from dogs.

Editorial Review:

Wolves are much more than big and badDID YOU KNOW THAT WOLVES...
are like dogs: they are loyal, affectionate, and highly intelligent.live in packs -- or families -- led by the strongest female and male.are friendly with one another: they play games, bring food to one another, and baby-sit one another's cubs.

HERE'S THE REAL STORY ABOUT THIS ANIMAL OF MYTH AND LEGEND, THE WOLF.

Good childrens introduction to the stars. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my seven year old. He is delighted with it, the book is clearly a hit. The text is perfect for him to practice his reading as he learns about the stars.

He is especially taken with stars he recognises, such as Betegeuse in Orion. And he was very impressed with the drawing of a planet being sucked into a black hole. That sparked a couple of days of discussion about what life would be like in black holes. Kids always love the gruesome stuff!

The photographs of nebulae are very beautiful. I have to admit though, I'll need an adult version to answer some of the questions I am being asked.

This book teaches you alot about stars. 5 out of 5 stars.

Did you know that:

  • Penguins are champion swimmers.
  • They spend 75 percent of their lives in water.
  • They are birds, but they can't fly. Penguins are classified as birds because they have feathers.

Now you can explore a penguin's world by finding out how they can swim so fast, what they eat, and why people need to protect their habitats. Acclaimed science writer Seymour Simon has teamed up with the Smithsonian Institution to take you on a journey to the Antarctic region for a close-up look at one of nature's most beloved and sociable animals.

My Budding Astronauts Favorite Author 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 5 year old absolutely loves all of the books he has by Mr. Simon.

The pictures are outstanding and the wording is such, even he can understand, and grasp the concept Mr. Simon is trying to get across, as we read it to him. He is even now, picking up these books, and reading them himself, as best he can.

Any author that can capture and keep your child's attention and spur them on to learn more and inspire their desire to read, deserves nothing but the highest score. I regret I can only go as high as five, on rating this item and author.

Another "star" by Seymour Simon 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My teacher has many Seymour Simon books in the classroom and all of them are great. I am a fifth grader, and a good reader of fiction but nonfiction has always been a struggle for me. But this book, and others by the same author, have kept me interested. I've learned a lot and I wish we could use these books instead of textbooks.

STUNNING! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The full-color photos in this book are absolutely stunning. Lightning towering over a cityscape, hitting a tree, bursting from clouds, even right beside a twisting tornado! The text is large and easy to read. This book provides a wonderful overview of the phenomenon that is lightning, and is appropriate for readers of all ages.

Wonderful text and gorgeous illustrations! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

By far the best illustrations of any book I've seen about lightning. It also contains two photos from Boston's Museum of Science's electricity show, which are interesting, and a special treat for those of us who have seen that wonderful show.

The content of the book is great and gives more detail about lightning than I've found in other children's books on this subject. An example is giving a list of all the different types of lightning and even revealing three new kinds of lightning discovered in 1995. Who knew? Three other books I read about lightning and storms failed to give the level of detail that Simon chose to include.

Simon tells us what to do if we are caught in a lightning storm but it is done in a careful way with statistics given such as the number of people hit by lightning who lived through is almost double the number who are hit and die as a result of it.

As usual Simon writes in a non-patronizing tone, which I appreciate. We really enjoyed this book. A must-read for learning about the weather!
