I find nothing wrong with this book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I put off the purchase of the book based on the other reviews. I purchased a fodors family travel book instead. I hated that book so I decided to go back with my gut instinct and purchased this one. I gave it five stars because I thought the other reviews were harsh and unjust. I don't feel the sections need to be in any particular order. Start at page one and read. Mark or just take note of the destinations that interest you. I don't think the destinations are unrealistic. If disney or a caribbean cruise is your idea of the ultimate family vacation then this is not the book for you. I don't say this offend anyone it is just that you may need to consider a different book for your needs. I do plan to take my kids to Asia, Africa, South America and so forth. You need not be wealthy to do so.

Editorial Review:

500 Places to Take Your Kids allows parents, grandparents, and kids to create a lifetime of shared memories while visiting destinations the whole family can enjoy. Here are cities, zoos, sports shrines, museums, castles, beaches, outdoor activities, and more—500 thoughtfully-chosen places that will enchant and beguile both the young and the young at heart.

Each entry contains all the information families need to help plan a trip: age ratings, service details, and nearby kid-friendly hotels. A Specialty Index organized by type of trip helps families discover places and activities for all ages and interests, while a Geographical Index allows families to locate attractions across the world or simply across town. Photos throughout the book help bring destinations to life.

Good but only for certain States 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This manual is an informative manual as long as you don't live in Florida. As a Boy Scout I camped all over the state of Florida and now as a parent of a daughter I must find camping spots that are public such as State or National Parks, I purchase this book in hopes of finding the best places to go in my state. Unfortunately the information for Florida is severly lacking. The cool feature of telling you exactly which site in the campground is the best site... missing. Now if you live in other states they do seem to tell you where is the best site so the best advice I can give is get this book from the library look at a few sites in yoru state and if the details are there, buy it or if you happen to have lots of money and or time to travel get it anyway.

Editorial Review:

  • Covers campgrounds in every state except Hawaii
  • One out of every ten vehicle-owning households in the U.S. owns an RV, and 150 million Americans enjoy camping
  • Reviews nearly 5,000 campgrounds that accommodate RVers and families traveling by car
  • Includes "Campground Awards" for privacy, cleanliness, security, facilities, and best setting
  • Formerly titled The Unofficial Guide to the Best RV and Tent Campgrounds in the U.S.A.

I am planning a second visit based on descriptions in Frommer's Australia 2008 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This well-organized book breaks down places to see in Australia by thier states. The sixteen Best of Australia lists; descriptive reviews of hotels and suggested itineraries; and 'Fun Facts' such as where to cuddle a koala are interesting to note. I am already planning to go back for a second visit because I cannot see it all in two weeks.

As always, Frommers delivers - excellent for first-timers 4 out of 5 stars.

I have been using Frommers for many years. So naturally I chose this book to prepare for our first trip to Australia. It is the only guide book that you will need, though you might want to pick up a free AAA guide after you arrive if you need hotel info as Frommers can't cover every property.

This book will provide basic info on all the major sites. In addition, you will find a great deal of info on smaller towns that you may visit if you decide to do any driving. It was invaluable for providing info on the fly.

If you buy one guidebook, this one should be it.

Disappointing return to Frommer's NZ 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I took a 6 week trip to New Zealand 6 years ago and depended on two great books that helped me tremendously. One was Frommer's, and the other Lonely Planet. So when I ramped up for a 4-week return visit, the first book I ordered was Frommer's, even though the reviews were not terrific. Well. This book was such a disappointment, and proved virtually worthless in planning my trip, unlike the volume from 6 years ago.

First up, the accomodation section is sorely lacking for (truly) middle-class travelers. As another writer mentions, I was stunned by the abundance of listed lodging in the US$400 - $1000 (and up!) per night range. Yikes!! And I was dismayed by the paltry number of lodgings listed at a more reasonable range of US$150 - $300. I did check out a number of these latter on their websites, as well as the official NZ website, but still found better accomodation for the price through links and connections to elsewhere. I booked 28 nights of lodging in NZ using only 1 suggestion from this edition of Frommers. How disappointing. The other bookings are at some truly wonderful, visually beautiful, upscale places, for good prices at Bay of Islands, Whakatane, Gisborne, Nelson, Hokitika, Haast, Queenstown, Te Anau, and Akaroa, -but none listed in Frommers.

As well, some of the great suggestions for things to see away from the main tourist centers, which I found in Frommer's during my last trip, were absent in the present edition. So, from a lodging perspective and a "see the real NZ perspective," this book is just a complete disappointment.

For a helpful guide to traveling NZ, I suggest The Rough Guide to NZ, and the official NZ website.

Editorial Review:

Written by a New Zealand resident, and full of personal insights and opinions, this guide takes you to one of the world’s most exciting ecotourism destinations! It’s much more complete and in-depth than its major competition.
Whether you’re dreaming of hiking along the Marlborough Sound, trout fishing in Lake Rotorua, driving the Milford Road, or feasting on sumptuous green-lipped mussels or succulent lamb, this detailed guide will help you plan the trip of a lifetime. You’ll also find the latest on nightlife in Auckland and Wellington and the best places to lay your head after an adventure-filled day.

Alaska Tour Book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is an must for the tourist who wants to know something about the area they will be visiting. It is full of good info for a person going on a cruise. It has helped us to plan our days in the different ports we will visit. We highly recommend this book.

Frommer's Alaska 2008 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Frommer's Alaska 2008 proved to be as complete a vacation guide as we'd expected from previous worldwide books purchased under this name previously.

Condescending to Cruisers 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I are in our 30s, and took our first trip to Alaska to cruise and see the beauty of the coast and its wildlife. In preparation for the trip, we bought 3 books: (1) Frommers Alaska, (2) Lonely Planet - Alaska, and (3) Fodor's Ports of Call. If you are taking a cruise, and are buying less than 3 books (or if you don't want to check a 2 pound book in your luggage) - then you should not buy Frommer's Alaska.

Frommers Alaska is the largest / thickest of the books discussed above, but much of the information is irrelevant to a cruise ship passenger (cities in the deep interior, hotels, suggested 2 week-long itineraries, etc). There is one 20 page chapter, not written by the author, devoted to choosing a cruise-line, which can be helpful. However, better information can be found in a cruise-specific "ports of call" book.

One of the irritating aspects of the Frommers Alaska book, is the author's negativity towards cruise vacationers. Every chapter that discusses a port, includes a backhand remark regarding cruisers / tourists. It is much more pleasant to plan the vacation using a book that is more cruiser-friendly (or at least neutral, such as Lonely Planet).

Frommers Alaska is geared towards the land-traveler, and cruise passengers are better served with a cruise-specific book.

Editorial Review:

Since 2001, Alaska has had an increase in visitors every year, with 1.56 million in 2006. Cruise ship passengers increased an estimated 4% in 2006.

classic frommer guide 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I sure like this edition overall, though it had some shortcomings for my specific trip's purposes. Classic Frommers style -- concise, tight, useful info. Good complement to my other guides -- TimeOut Buenos Aires, Footprint and Fodors. Some key items about towns and lodging in Mendoza region I only found in Frommers. But, was weak on info for NW-Salta-JuyJuy region as compared to the others.

Editorial Review:

  • In 2005, tourism in Argentina increased 20% over the previous year, according to the Argentine Secretaria Turismo, with 1.77 million foreign arrivals
  • According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Argentina is the third most popular Latin American country for international visitors, behind Mexico and Brazil
  • Argentina offers a wide range of attractions, including a fantastic wine region, 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a variety of outdoor travel adventures
  • Argentina remains an excellent value for U.S. travelers, with its 3-to-1 exchange rate favoring the dollar

Best for detail 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I used Frommer's and Fodor's both for my recent Ireland trip. I think Frommer's had better detail about sights, for example: more accurate times when the sites were open. I usually check the book out of the library and if I really like it then I buy it. I probably used Frommer's more on my vacation.

Not as good as most Frommer's 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Look out...I agree with the other review that Frommer's guides are usually great on the specifics and in the past I've had great experiences with them. So much so that the only guide I bought immediately for Ireland was Frommer's. But the Ireland guide steered us wrong a few times. We were only there for a week and we ran into 3 inconvenient errors in the book. For example, it stated the Dublin Writer's Museum closed at 5pm...well, it does but last admission is at 4:15 pm and they won't let you in no matter how much you beg after that time (although they were very nice about it). We also ran into an incorrect closing time for the Burren Center, which we had gone a bit out of our way for (5pm instead of 6 pm). And another bummer was going to the Craggaunowen Bronze Age Project in County Clare and finding it closed as of Sept. 2nd, not as of October, like the book said. So buyer beware...still an all-around decent book, but double check hours of operation if you are running tight and in September, be very careful of things being closed for the season already even if the book says they are open. If hours for an establishment are listed as changing in September or October, double check since the book might be wrong. Have fun...Ireland is all good even if things don't work out as planned...

New Orleans Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This guide provides a variety of interesting facts about New Orleans, its culture and history, as well as information for selecting activities, restaurants, tours, and other in and about New Orleans. Very helpful as a pre-trip planner, and its maps assist getting about while there. It also gives a brief section about Katrina's impact.

Don't go to NOLA without it!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for a recent trip to New Orleans and found it a valuable resource, both for myself as a somewhat frequent visitor to the city and for my boyfriend, who was experiencing this wonderful place for the first time. We were guided to some absolute restaurant gems, both inside and outside of the Quarter, and to some fabulous music venues. We also spent our days on the recommended walking tours (the book pays for itself in walking tours alone--you will see and learn about a great deal of history and beautiful architecture at your own pace without being stuck in a group). The post-Katrina information was helpful and up-to-date, especially considering that so many businesses and services are still in a state of transition. The Frommer's guide enhanced our New Orleans experience immeasurably, and I would recommend it to anyone planning a trip to the Big Easy.

Editorial Review:

Frommer's New Orleans 2008 is a fully updated edition. Our author, a New Orleans resident, has chronicled the city's post-Katrina devastation and resurrection, with full information on what neighborhoods have rebounded and what establishments are open for business. With complete coverage of area hotels and transportation options, this book has everything you need to plan a trip to this slowly rebuilding city. Our author helps you find the best places now to hear jazz, blues, and zydeco, and detailed neighborhood maps help travelers find their way across town.
