A few words, and a search 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a mother duck that cannot find one of her ducklings. She goes around asking the other denizens of the pond if they have seen it. The fun thing is that, if you look, you will find where the duckling is.

There are few words in this book, so be aware of the reading level (baby-preschool). However, the artwork is very well done, and the fun of having the little reader find the missing duckling on each page makes the whole thing worthwhile.

Great for kids that love animals 5 out of 5 stars.

My boys LOVE animals, especially ducks, so this is a big hit. If you like "Silly Little Goose" by the same author, this one's sure to be popular in your house.

A GREAT "CRITTER" SEARCH BOOK FOR THE WEE ONES. 5 out of 5 stars.

What a delightful work for the very young. A Mom Duck is searching for her one "lost" duckling and searches the pond, asking the other creatures "have you seen my duckling?" Of course the duckling is not actually lost, and if you and your child look close, the duckling can be found here and there, hidden (as little ducks should be) in various locations. The kids get quite a kick out of this one as it is interactive an they must search for the little "lost" duck. The art work in this one is great and quite appearling. The simple text is repetitive and fun for the child. This is simply a fun read for the small child and a fun read for the adult reader as they help the child find the duckling. Highly recommend.

An anxious mother duck leads her brood around the pond as she searches for one missing duckling.

Beautiful Christmas Book For The Very Young 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

No offense to the reviewer disappointed that this is not a "historical teaching tool", but this book is not intended to be that! Nancy Tafuri is one of the most gifted picture book authors for the very young, and she has used her talents here to make the Nativity story accessible to the very youngest readers. The gentle text and expressive pictures draw young children into the stable along with the animals to see the newborn baby, and to greet him.

I read this at storyhours for two and three year olds. The children love joining in on the animals' songs, and when the donkey sings his noisy "hee-haw" song, they laugh along with the baby. No, they don't get the deeper message, but we are talking about very little children and their first introduction to the story--and this works!

There are plenty of good books out there for older children about the Nativity. But if you want something to gently introduce your child to the wonder of Christmas--here it is.

Editorial Review:

A very special baby is born in a stable under a star, surrounded by friendly farmyard animals. The donkey wants to be the first to welcome the baby, but he is too shy. So the doves welcome him with their "Coo-coo," the cow with her "Moo-moo," and all the other animals in turn. Then, the baby welcomes the shy donkey with his own sweet smile. The donkey brays - "Hee-aw!" - and the baby laughs with joy! Then all snuggle around the baby and settle into sleep. This warm presentation of the first Christmas celebrates the wonder of a baby's birth and welcomes all into the spirit of holiday joy.

Beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book, I have been reading this book to my son from the day he was born, he is now 13 months. Now when I recite the first line of the book, he will grab it from his book pile and come sit with me to read together. I have even added my own verse at the end.
This book is sweet and soothing and I plan to give it to all the expecting mother's I come across!

An Instant Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

The first time I read this book to my 10 month old son, he sighed and pushed the book over which is his indication to me to read it again. I probably read this book to him (omitting a few words to speed things up - his preference) about 20 times. I could feel his body relax as the book's refrain came over and over again. He wanted me to linger, however, on the sweet and rhythmic lullaby on the last page. Lovely book!

Editorial Review:

Deep in the woods, animal mothers reassure their little ones of the many ways they are loved. And in a log cabin, a child hears the special way he (or she) is loved. Endearing artwork captures all the tenderness between parent and child.

Editorial Review:

Bunny and Bird are best friends. On the first day of a new snow, they decide to play games with their other friends, Squirrel and Chipmunk. But when Bunny hides--and keeps hiding--in a game of hide-and-seek, the others start to worry. Did he run away? Doesn't he want to play with them anymore? Great relief abounds when Bunny leaps out from his hiding place: "I would never run away," he tells Bird. "I am your friend."

This simple story, with sweet, almost old-fashioned pale-hued watercolors by Caldecott Honor artist and author Nancy Tafuri, is a sequel to Will You Be My Friend?. The easy, unfussy language, quiet storyline, and big pictures make this a terrific early reader book, although sensitive children may wonder why Bunny played an almost-mean trick on her best friend. Especially astute young readers might catch on to Bunny's whereabouts even before Bird does, and everyone will enjoy watching these four friends celebrate the enchantment of rural winter. A Comforting Story for Ducks and Kids 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Nancy Tafuri's reassuring mother duck is the heart of this sweet and gentle book for infants and toddlers. Mama duck surrounded All her little ducklings surround her as they being their short pond journey, save for one stray duckling about whom the story revolves. In the first two scenes, the mom gazes at them and at the us with the same reassuring pose, her head bent to the right crossing her body, and her beak suggesting a friendly smile. Her large tawny and white feathers contrast with the downy backs of the chicks, their golden undersides skimming the turquoise pond.

One very curious duck temporarily threatens the tranquility of this setting. She (or it could be a he) is distracted by the other pond inhabitants, including a turtle whom we see only in the distance on the first page. This seeminly unimportant turtle stays in the background while the increasingly straggling duck views a green dragonfly, a long-billed bird, a porcupine, and a frog. These animals arrive unexpectedly on each page; it's like an amusement park train ride where every bend brings a surprise. Tafuri draws tantalizing close-ups and blue-wash backgrounds, and her over/under the water picture showing the marshy pond in the background, and an underwater view of the duck's legs, a fish, a snail, and a lily pad in the foreground is a visual delight. (The blue washes of the pond are especially beautiful.)

As night approaches, the duck finds herself alone on the pond, except for that same turtle and one bat flying into the shadows. Even the lost-duck-at-night scenario has a casual air to it: Our little duck is only mildly upset, and the turtle soon rescues her. Things seem a bit too sedate when the bird shows no emotion when on the back of the turtle, who leads her back to her mother and siblings. However, it is calm that rules the day (and this book), and as little duck reunites with her family, the mother strikes her familiar protective profile. A lovely going- to-bed book, Mother duck bids us all good night with "I love you, my duckling," while the constant turtle sleeps silently on a nearby rock, head and legs withdrawn inside a cozy mosaic-like blue and gold shell. This is one of those simple but well-told stories that nicely accompany a child's goodnight rhythms.

Editorial Review:

The sun is setting and it's time for Mama to lead her youngsters home. One dawdling duckling falls behind, drawn to the pond creatures who call, "Goodnight, Little Duckling!" as he paddles by. Soon, Mama and the other ducklings are all out of sight, but there's no need for alarm. One special turtle is waiting to carry the little duckling back to Mama's nest.

In this fresh companion to her classic Caldecott Honor winner HAVE YOU SEEN MY DUCKLING?, Nancy Tafuri's beautifully detailed watercolors and spare text once again capture the tender feelings and joyful wonder of childhood.

My baby daughter loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We initially chose this book at the library because it had wonderful drawings of farm animals, especially dogs and cats, and a nice rhythm. But my 16-month-old daughter wouldn't let us put the book back on the shelf after reading it so we checked it out. We've since returned the book to the library, but she loved it so much - endlessly turning the pages and babbling to the animals pictured on them - that I had to buy her her own copy!

Editorial Review:

Just right for toddlers, an appealing book in which each action propels the next, from a farmer kissing his wife, who then pats the dog, to a cat, a mouse, geese, and a donkey....There's a lot to discover and discuss in these expansive, beautifully observed illustrations.

small error 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a children's library clerk, I see many such books in the course of my work. This is a lovely picture book; however, one thing bothers me: the baby fox is repeatedly referred to, both in the blurb and the actual text, as a 'fox cub'. Baby foxes are not cubs. They are kits. I hope this will be corrected in later editions.

Wonderful message, beautiful illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.

I just bought this book as a 'new baby' gift for a friend. It is a nice hardcover book that will be a nice addition to any collection/ Wonderful repeating message about how special a young animal, person, etc. is to its parents. A nice message and a good gift, because it's unlikely that everyone else knows about this book.

Editorial Review:

Deep in a tree trunk by a woodland grove, a fox kit asks, 'How am I special?' And her Mama and Papa reply, 'Dear little one, with your glossy red coat and swift running body, you are so special - and we will love you forever and ever and ever.' With lyrical text and lush watercolors, Nancy Tafuri follows I Love You, Little One with a celebration of the ways all creatures are special. Ranging from penguins in the Antarctic to lions on the savanna, baby animals around the world are told just how special they are, And lastly, a human child is praised for his curious mind and loving heart.

A great book for a first grader 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Thiis book was perfect for my grandson whose favorite color is blue (the reason I bought it) and who is having a bit of trouble with the secondary colors. On top of all that, he was able to read it all on his own, which was an added bonus. When I ordered it, I could not tell what age the book was for. It is a perfect fit.

Great teaching tool 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book for teaching both primary and secondary colors. It is simple enough that the kids( my 3 yr old class) can recite it along with me and can also problem solve as we go along.

Excellent buy.

Editorial Review:

When Farmer Gray takes a trip, Blue Goose, Red Hen, Yellow Chick and White Duck decide to paint their black-and-white farm. Red Hen paints the barn red and White Duck paints the fence white. Then Blue Goose and Yellow Chick pour their paint together to make green for the grass and trees. By the time Farmer Gray comes back, the whole farm is full of color--what a wonderful surprise! Incorporating primary and secondary colors, as well as animals, this is a simple and engaging way for young children to learn basic concepts.
