Pretty good coverage, but not great for budget travellers 3 out of 5 stars.

I'm planning a trip to Scotland (leaving next week), and have never used Frommer's guides before. It has good suggestions for interesting touristy places to visit in Scotland, and gives a well written, concise historical description of the sites, which I like.

However, for booking hotels, I haven't selected a single suggestion from Frommers. This is because their suggestions are generally way too expensive. For example, looking for accomodations in the Orkney Islands, you'd think it was impossible to spend less than $150 a night if you relied exclusively on this guide. On the web, I found that there are at least a handful two and three star hotels in Kirkwall that were less than $100 a night, and look very nice.

Also, it says in Frommer's that it's ~$100 to travel by train to Edinburgh from London, but it doesn't mention that there are actually a huge range of fares, from ~$20 to more than $200 at www.virgin.com/trains, that depends on how early you purchase the tickets, and how flexible you want the ticket to be.

From these and other examples, I've decided that Frommer's is a fine place to start for an overview and figuring out where I want to go, but I'd end up unnecessarily spending a fortune if I relied on it for the practical stuff.

Editorial Review:

Frommer’s Scotland features gorgeous color photos of the quaint villages, misty moors, and offshore islands that await you. It’s a highly personal guide that’s fun to read and even more fun to use on the road—and it’s much more complete and in-depth than its major competitors.

You’ll find complete details on lovely small towns, world-class golf courses, superb fishing, country pubs, whiskey distilleries, natural wonders, castles, literary landmarks, mysterious ancient ruins, and Edinburgh’s vibrant cultural scene.

Don't leave home without it 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We used Frommer's in a recent train trip, and this was the first major city we visited on the trip. And it made me thankful that I purchased the editions for the other cities we later visited. I had visited Boston once before a decade and a half ago, but this time I had three children in tow. I wanted to make sure that we paced ourselves for the three days that we were there, and the book allowed me to do so. I was able to pick activities that the kids would like--including the Freedom Trail, a short 1-hour cruise to the USS Constitution, and Fenway Park. Frommer's has an excellent Freedom Trail section that you will want to keep your finger in as you walk along site by site. There were many excellent suggestions the book made about a number of things, including a short (positive) review about our hotel (the Midtown Hotel, which we were extremely pleased with in regards to location and price). Except for being wrong on some of the admission prices to some of the sites--just a buck or two--the book was fairly accurate in everything else we looked up, which I thought was pretty impressive. In addition, I recommend picking up an Entertainment book for your city--they're only $10 after the spring--as we used food and entertainment coupons in Boston that saved us more than $100. Two-fer-ones and excellent discounted fares made it more bearable to do a few extras, especially for us on a limited budget. Whether or not you've been to Boston before, I highly recommend Frommer's for getting around with the best possible information at your fingertips.

Editorial Review:

This brand new first edition of Frommer’s South Korea features in-depth coverage of this increasingly popular destination, from the cities of Seoul and Busar to the DMZ border area to Jeju Island, the "Island of the Gods." Our author Cecilia Hae-Jin Lee is a first-generation Korean American who passes along insider's tips and insights into Korean culture, plus a Korean recipe or two (Hae-Jin Lee is also a respected cook and cookbook author). She'll steer you away from the touristy and the inauthentic and show you the real heart of South Korea. Eat a Hanjeongsik (full-course meal) in a neighborhood cafe in Seoul, attend the Busar Film Festival, shop for the country's best fabrics (ramie fabrics) at the markets in Hansan, and hike the Seoraksan Mountains (or just buy the area's famous mushrooms and honey)--plus seek out tea houses, limestone caves, Buddhist temples, hot springs, battlegrounds, and parks throughout the region.

You’ll travel South Korea like a pro with our candid advice and handy Korean-language glossary. Also included are accurate regional and town maps, up-to-date advice on finding the best package deals, a glossary of Korean cuisine, and an online directory that makes trip-planning a snap!

classic frommer guide 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I sure like this edition overall, though it had some shortcomings for my specific trip's purposes. Classic Frommers style -- concise, tight, useful info. Good complement to my other guides -- TimeOut Buenos Aires, Footprint and Fodors. Some key items about towns and lodging in Mendoza region I only found in Frommers. But, was weak on info for NW-Salta-JuyJuy region as compared to the others.

I am planning a second visit based on descriptions in Frommer's Australia 2008 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This well-organized book breaks down places to see in Australia by thier states. The sixteen Best of Australia lists; descriptive reviews of hotels and suggested itineraries; and 'Fun Facts' such as where to cuddle a koala are interesting to note. I am already planning to go back for a second visit because I cannot see it all in two weeks.

As always, Frommers delivers - excellent for first-timers 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have been using Frommers for many years. So naturally I chose this book to prepare for our first trip to Australia. It is the only guide book that you will need, though you might want to pick up a free AAA guide after you arrive if you need hotel info as Frommers can't cover every property.

This book will provide basic info on all the major sites. In addition, you will find a great deal of info on smaller towns that you may visit if you decide to do any driving. It was invaluable for providing info on the fly.

If you buy one guidebook, this one should be it.
