Over 800 pages, but still too thin! 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Frommer's "China Complete" tries hard to include a lot of information, but there's just not enough room in "only" 800 pages to pack it all in. Let's face it, China is too big a country to be covered adequately by an all-in-one guidebook. I'd definitely go for more specialized, regional and city, guidebooks whenever you can find them.

For something more inclusive, though, I can suggest two possibilities, especially for first-timers: (1) "Frommer's China: The 50 Most Memorable Trips" and (2) "The Eyewitness Travel Guide to China." The Eyewitness Guide is very attractive and informative visually, while "50 Trips" has excellent descriptive text and not a single photograph! You could decide which one to buy, depending on your own preferred orientation (visual or text). Both do a fine job of describing China's many cultural sights: temples, palaces, gardens, and more. They are cultural guides, rather than "Frommer's Complete" all-things-to-all-people approach, but I prefer them for that very reason. In trying to do too much, "Frommer's Complete" doesn't really fit the bill.

Carry this with you- 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I spent about a month before our vacation reviewing this book. I highlighted, tabbed, and turned the corner down on pages that I thought I would use frequently. The section on suggested itineraries was an excellent "check list" for visiting the hot spots of New York. I was a little disappointed in the restaurant reviews- apparently my family's palate didn't correspond to Frommer's. However, the price rankings were very helpful. The fold out map was indispensable; and be sure to spend some time acquainting yourself with the sections of the city. Once you get the hang of uptown, downtown, west side and east side - and the transporation system - you'll do great! And New Yorkers are EXTREMELY helpful if you get lost or can't find that terrific landmark you are actually standing in front of. This guide is definitely worth purchasing.

Editorial Review:

Explore the city with a real New Yorker, who gives you inside tips on hotels, restaurants, attractions, and nightlife.
  • The best places to eat, from vintage delis to pizza joints to power palaces.
  • Off-the-beaten-path experiences and undiscovered gems, plus new takes on top attractions, and the latest news on the newest hotels, restaurants and hotspots in the City that Never Sleeps.

WORTH THE PRICE 5 out of 5 stars.

This was an excellent guide for people who have never been to Arizona. You can't get lost with it. The way it's organized makes it easy to read. You can go directly to the section you need without wasting time flipping the pages.

Invaluable Travel Guide! 5 out of 5 stars.

We used this travel guide on our recent trip to Arizona. We had never been to Arizona before,so we used the rating system to help us chose what not to miss. We are so glad we took the time to use it to research ahead of time. We had a great trip with the help of Frommer's Arizona 2008!

reliable 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this guidebook on my recent trip to Arizona. It was accurate and a handy guide to have. It did not, however blaze any trails. What I mean by this is that the author does not uncover many gems, but gives precise information about what is fairly well known. Also, like many guidebooks, does not want to give thumbs down to any tourist attraction. For example, we went out of our way leaving the grand canyon to visit the Cameron Trading Post, which is a quaint sounding name for an overpriced store of Native American handiwork. The author did say that the Trading Post sold some fine and expensive products, but did not say that it is an overpriced tourist trap. Had he wrote this, it would saved us wasted hours.
However I gave the book 5 stars because it did help alot on our trip.

Editorial Review:

In 2005, 15.8 million U.S. travelers visited Arizona. The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa was voted the best spa resort in the U.S. at the 2006 World Travel Awards.

Good But There are Better 4 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I have been to Switzerland many times. Recently I sat down with my daughter who has worked at a hotel at Interlaken in Switzerland during her years in Business Administration at McGill - up to last summer - and we went over the Switzerland guides to see how they ranked, and what was currently the best guide in our humble opinions. We are not experts but have certain requirements and preferences. It helps if one can get a feel for the area in advance of a trip, and generally that is helped by good maps and color photos. So those guides do better in our review. We like to make reservations by internet and telephone and just use the Guide as a "guide".

Generally it costs more to publish a book with color photos so when all else is reasonably equal, one feels that they get better value with a guide with photos. Also we wanted to see if the ambiance at certain hotels and resorts was accurately portrayed in the text based on our knowledge. So those aspects of the guides determine our ranking. Incidentally all the books are excellent. When we did our review the new DK Eyewitness guide was not yet available, but in any case it will be short, under 400 pages.

For the Swiss guides we separated the guides into three groups, 5, 4, and 3 stars.

5 Stars (this group has nice color photos plus maps and text).

A. Green Guide to Switzerland published February 2001 by Michelin, 395 pages, $14., ranked 24,380 on Amazon.com, 0.64" x 9.4" x 4.7", lots of photos, maps, text, accurate portrayal of areas. Gives a nice idea of what you will find. Goes right down to small villages in detail even though it is just 395 pages. First choice.

B. Lonely Planet Switzerland published July 2003, 335 pages, $ 14., ranked 29,913 on Amazon.com, .69" x 6.42" x 6.5". Solid effort, lots of good photos and descriptions.

4 Stars (this group mainly text and maps).

C. Rough Guide to Switzerland published June 2003, 704 pages, $13.27, ranked 30,209 on Amazon.com, 1.08" x 7.8" x 6.38". Solid effort lots of things to see and do and best "text and maps only" books.

D. Frommer's Switzerland published February 2003, 512 pages, $15.39, ranked 47,638 on Amazon.com, 1.1" x 8.5" x 5.08". Similar to Rough Guide but shorter.

E. Fodor's Guide to Switzerland 42 edition, published December 2002, 448 pages, $14.7, ranked highest in group on Amazon.com at 3,172, 1.2" x 8.98" x 5.01". The smallest in the group, do not know why it is so popular?.

3 Stars

F. Michelin Red Guide published in 2004, 563 pages but in four languages: Italian, French, German and English so English sections are just a fraction of the book.

What to Do Where 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The key feature of Frommer's guides is their "what to do if" pages. While I was on a tour which took us to certain attractions, there was sufficient free time to explore others. Having someone to guide you to the most worthwhile attractions depending on how much time you have available is helpful when visiting for the first time. I took some of their suggestions, but also found others just as interesting. The guide book is targeted for the mainstream adult audience rather than youth or those on a frugal budget. The pages of need to know items as well as items such as where to find bookstores and other make it very handy. The pages concerning accommodations and restaurants are as current as can be.

I highly recommend it for its target audience

Jonathan
