A Truly Great Read Aloud 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a joy to read and fun for children to hear. I read this to my two girls when they were young and now they read it to their children. Our edition is getting very worn and it is wonderful to see that it has been reprinted. This is the type of book that is a must to be owned and read over and over again.

Little disappointed... 1 out of 5 stars.

I realize that the book was used, but there was writing inside the front cover and the book really looks "used". I've bought used books before, and they looked much better than this. I feel that I spent a lot of money for a used book.

Stand Back Said the Elephant, I'm Going to Sneeze 5 out of 5 stars.

Like everyone else that has commented on this book - It is my all time favorite story. I'm 38 years old and I still have my original copy given to me by my grandmother at age 6. My 3 children all delight in this book as well. The pictures are great and it is just the right length for a bedtime story. This book makes memories for children and is worthy of handing down from generation to generation.

Editorial Review:

The last time the elephant sneezed, he blew monkeys out of the trees, stripes off the zebra, and spots off the leopard. This rollicking new edition of the favorite nonsense verse again shows the panic that follows the elephant's dreaded announcement.

Amelia Bedelia is Job Hunting, Look Out! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When Amelia Bedelia, the housekeeper who literally takes everything literally, brings Mrs. Rogers her cereal with coffee, the woman takes one look at those flakes floating around in her coffee cup and fires Amelia before she gets a chance to fill her creme puffs. Amelia, one who always sees the bright side of life, sets out to find a job. First she goes to work in a beauty shop, but when she's told to pin up a customer's hair and does it with pins from her purse, she is fired. Then she finds work in a dress shop as a seamstress, but she shortens all the dresses with a scissors and is fired. As a file clerk, she stamps on the letters with her feet when told to stamp them and files papers with a fingernail file when told to file them. And when she goes to work for a doctor, well, you'll just have to read this book to your child to find out what mischief she gets into there. Fortunately she makes a terrific cream puff, because when she remembers she forgot to fill them and goes by the Rogers', they hire her back, because those cream puffs are just oh so good.

My son Devon is fast approaching three. He knows his letters, upper and lower case. He knows they make words and he loves to sit while I read Amelia Bedelia stories to him. We've been doing it for over a year now. At first I made up the story line as his didn't have the attention span or the ability to understand. Now I've started reading, pointing to the words as I go along. Ms. Parish has written an excellent series for children and in this one, Wallace Tripps illustrations set off Amelia's tales to a tee. If you want your toddler to read early, and I do, then this is a series for you.

Editorial Review:

Amelia Bedelia must look for a new job -- Mrs. Rogers has finally had enough. But for poor Amelia Bedelia, each new job is a bigger mess than the last. Can she ever find a place to belong?

Great Baseball Story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In this edition of Amelia Bedelia, Peggy Parish has done another wonderful job at telling a wonderful story. Amelia Bedelia is making an attempt to play baseball, and she has managed to take the lessons literally, as always. She learns stealing bases are okay and putting players out. This is a favorite in my household, and we laughed at Amelia Bedelia's attempts of playing baseball.

Our favorite part was when she hit the winning run, 'stole' every single base along the way, and she ran home like everyone told her to with all the bases. The kids were wonderful in this story and patient, and it was a fantastic read.

I recommend the Amelia Bedelia books for every household. Amelia Bedelia is a fun character, and it will make the kids laugh.

Joy.

Amelia Bedelia "literally" plays the game of baseball 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Not since Abbot asked Costello "Who's on First?" has the national pastime been taken so literally. Taking things literally is precisedly what Amelia Bedelia has been doing ever since she first became a housekeeper. Tell her to "Dust the furniture" and she will dutifully find the Dusting Powder and do as she was told, even though at her house they undust the furniture. In Peggy Parish's "Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia," the Grizzlies baseball team is in trouble when one of their players gets sick and they need a replacement for their big game with the Tornadoes. Who steps up to the plate to save the day up the literal-minded Amelia Bedelia.

The fun, of course, comes when the kids tell Amelia Bedelia to tag a runner or make a base hit. Then there is the uniform that she comes up with (you need a uniform to play baseball, right?). The illustrations by Wallace Tripp capture the fun as Amelia Bedelia plays the game of baseball like nobody has ever played it before. Besides, you should see what Amelia Bedelia looks like when she swings a bat. Fortunately, one things she knows how to do right is to fix an empty cookie jar because she makes really great cookies (although she has doubts about using home plate to serve them on to her teammates). Fans of Peggy Parish's creation will enjoy seeing her on the baseball diamond while there might be some fans of the sport who will be introduced to the literally-minded housekeeper for the first time.

Editorial Review:

Guess who's
at bat?
The lovable, hilarious amelia Bedelia is back, filling in for a sick player on the Grizzlies baseball team. Watch out! Because nobody plays ball like Amelia Bedelia.

Great travel CD 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We took a trip through 4 states and had purchased 5 sets of books on CD. They all worked out great. We put them in our portable DVD player w/double headset jacks and 2 of us could listen at the same time. We laughed together at how silly Amelia Bedelia can be. Great purchases with many years of enjoyment left in them.

A Great Big Ugly Man Came Up and Tied His Horse To Me 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My wife bought our family copy when it first came out in 1973. She was at a conference in Boston and saw it go on display. Our daughter, born 1971, was raised on it and both my wife and I can quote passages at the drop of a word. Favorites are "The Slithergadee" and "The common cormorant or shag...." Our daughter is now expecting her first child (our first grandchild) and we presented her with our copy. We have recently purchased a paperback copy to read when the child is at our home. Our daughter's sister-in-law read our original copy and is now looking for a copy to read to her son. It is great for teaching children reading and an understanding of art and life. (Yes, I have several Wallace Tripp illustrations.)

Creme de la Creme 5 out of 5 stars.

There is no way for me to convey the top notch quality of Mr. Tripp's humor and art work in the sketched scenes that decorate both front and back covers and also accompany each verse in this volume. While each of the nonsense verses are wonderful in their own right, the accompanying drawings (with the comments created by Mr. Tripp for the little animal characters he has sketched for each scene) are absolutely delightful!

I received this book as a gift from my husband many years ago and I have worn it to a frazzle enjoying it over and over; it is my healthy tension-reducer and stress manager. Although it is presented as a child's book, I am convinced it was sketched for grownups. I am at a loss for words to tell what an indescribably delicious treat you will find in this book no matter what your age!

Great Rhymes, Great pictures, Great puns 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a book for the nursery rhyme set that erudite parents will enjoy as well. It has one or two standards (some not so standard) per page, cleverly illustrated with a wide range of the cutest anthropomorphic animals since Walt Kelly's "Pogo". The rhymes and pictures alone would make it a three-star book, a good standard collection. But there's more. Mr. Tripp has his animals make little asides, much like the penguin in "Oliphant", and scatters sight gags liberally throughout his illustrations.

For "Higglety-pigglety, my black hen, she lays eggs for gentlemen", for instance, a happy bear admires the hen and says "egg-squisite".

A list of four dozen contestants at a pie eating contest includes "Sally Forth" and "Robin Banks".

Scattered about the clouds for "There was an old woman tossed on a blanket" are a pretty complete set of milestones from aviation history; spitfire, sopwith camel, X-1, mercury capsule, and a fellow with a dozen swans in a silken harness.

I was glad I bought the hardcover edition; the paperback would have worn out.

In this vibrant edition, newly recolored by the original illustrator, Amelia Bedelia's job search gets her into another `homonym hot seat because she does what she's told'literally. For example, she gets a job as a file clerk, only she takes out a nail file and shreds the papers she's supposed to file away! The comic convolutions are endless and endlessly enjoyable.'The Baton Rouge Advocate Magazine.

Whether it be the work of Lewis Carroll, Gertrude Stein, or an anonymous rhymester, when Wallace Tripp chooses to illustrate it, something special is brought into the creative process. Wide range of verse & delightful Wallace Tripp illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.

I have loved Wallace Tripp's illustrations since I was a child- he puts an amazing amount of character and detail, and wonderful coloring, in his work! The verses in this book were penned from authors ranging from Emily Dickinson to Groucho Marx- and the illustrations enrich them in every case! Recommended for adults as well as little folk!

This book was always a favorite of mine when I was little. The illustrations are amazing, and very comical. I did not understand all of them, but you know now, I laugh every time I read this book!

A collection of amusing verses by a variety of poets, including Emily Dickinson, Spike Milligan, Shakespeare, and others.
