Editorial Review:

The text of this Norton Critical Edition is based, with typesetting errors corrected, on the first U. S. edition (1876), the most authoritative of the editions published in Twain's lifetime.

"Backgrounds and Contexts" provides students with the standard source materials often cited by critics—Twain's stories of Good and Bad Boys, his Boy's Manuscript, his correspondence with William Dean Howells, and his 1870 letter to Will Bowen. This section also includes lesser-known but valuable contextual materials, among them Twain's journalistic description of school exercise and the discussion of Perry Davis' Pain Killer and other nineteenth-century nostrums.

"Criticism" includes interpretations by William Dean Howells, Hamlin L. Hill, Judith Fetterley, Alan Gribben, Glenn Hendler, Carter Revard, and Susan R. Gannon.

A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

About the Series: No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions. Each volume combines the most authoritative text available with the comprehensive pedagogical apparatus necessary to appreciate the work fully. Careful editing, first-rate translation, and thorough explanatory annotations allow each text to meet the highest literary standards while remaining accessible to students. Each edition is printed on acid-free paper and every text in the series remains in print. Norton Critical Editions are the choice for excellence in scholarship for students at more than 2,000 universities worldwide.

Great rendition. 5 out of 5 stars.

Jack Lemon takes a rare and wonderful turn at narrating in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This adaptation of the Twain classic seems crisper, capturing the feel of youth. It has never sounded better. The spry Mr. Lemon breathes life into this worn classic. This is a keeper for all ages.

Great Illustrated Classics by Baronet Books 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought the original work of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn for my 8-year-old and while he reads on a very elevated level, the original had language too difficult to decipher. However, he was interested in the story so I bought this abridged version and he loved it.

Editorial Review:

A true classic, a search for America's soul is given the reading of a lifetime by one of America's finest actors -- two-time Academy Award winner Jack Lemmon. Floating on a raft down the Mississippi with Jim, an escaping slave, Lemmon's Huck finds adventure, danger and a cast of characters who are both menacing and hilarious.

Produced in a simple manner that allows imaginations to soar, Mark Twain's marvelous, enduring wit will charm the entire family. Destined to become an instant classic, this audiobook will help introduce your entire family to the unique pleasure of classic literature.

Mark Twain brings Saint Joan to life! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The master storyteller, Mark Twain, used his immense talent to create this fictionalized account of Saint Joan's life. Even though it is fiction, it is still very historically accurate and stays true to the story of Saint Joan of Arc. Because it is fiction, Twain is able to bring out Saint Joan's personality in a way that reminds us that she was a beautiful, vibrant, passionate young woman who sacrificed everything to serve God and save her country

I think the very fact that Twain would even choose to write a biography about Saint Joan is a further testament to her greatness. Twain was personal friends with U.S. Grant and could much more easily have written a biography about him. He also lived at a time when some of the greatest military leaders ever lived like Lee, Jackson, etc., so if all he had been looking for was a famous military leader he could have also chosen one of them. Obviously, he was looking for someone even greater to write about. I think his own words probably explain why he chose Saint Joan when he said that: "She was perhaps the only entirely unselfish person whose name has a place in profane history."

Whether you are a Saint Joan devotee or not I think you will enjoy reading this book. It is well written and easy to read and covers one of the greatest stories in world history. If you already know about the life of Saint Joan, I also think you will end up loving this account because of the way Twain brings her to life. Definitely one of the best of all the biographies written about Saint Joan of Arc and considered by Twain himself to be his greatest work. Five stars are probably not enough.

One of Twains Greatest! 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

This book--at times disjointed, rambling, self-referential, and irreverent--is decades ahead of its time. It's an interdisciplinarian's dream as Twain takes on economics, geography, politics, ancient and contemporary history, and folklore with equal ease. Mostly though, one appreciates his knack for exaggeration, the tall tale, and the outright lie. It's a triumph of tone, as he lets you in on his wild wit, his keen observation, and his penchant for bending the truth without losing his credibility as a guide.

The book's structure is also modern: He recounts his days as a paddlewheel steam boat "cub," piloting the hundreds of miles of the Mississippi before the Civil War, then, in Part 2, returns to retrace his paddleboat route. Although a few of his many digressions don't work (they sometimes sound formulaic or too detailed) most of the narrative is extremely entertaining. Twain seems caught between admiration and disdain for the "modern" age-but he also rejects over-sentimentality over the past. He writes with beauty and cynicism, verve and humor. Very highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

It's Time to Rediscover the Wonderful Books We All Cherish.

"The Mississippi is well worth reading about. It is not a commonplace river but on the contrary is in all ways remarkable."-- Mark Twain

0riginally published in 1883, Life on the Mississippi is Mark Twain's memoir of his youthful years as a cub pilot on a steamboat paddling up and down the Mississippi River. Twain used his childhood experiences growing up along the Mississippi in a number of works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but nowhere is the river and the pilot's life more thoroughly described than in this work. Told with insight, humor, and candor, Life on the Mississippi is an American classic.

A good modern substitute for the original version of this classic 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a firm believer that young people should read as many of the classics as possible, preferably in their original form. However, the realist in me understands that appealing to modern children often means that modern techniques must be used. This book uses simpler and more modern language to tell the story of Tom, Huck and Becky.
None of the charm and humor of the original story is lost. It is still exciting; there is still the thrill of boys carrying out a great adventure and slowly, despite all their attempts to avoid it, growing up. There are many illustrations, which are minimally drawn in black and white, yet give more life to the story.
This book would be an appropriate selection for classes of young people where the assignment is to read this great and exciting classic adventure.

Editorial Review:

In this enduring and internationally popular novel, Mark Twain combines social satire and dime-novel sensation with a rhapsody on boyhood and on America's pre-industrial past. Tom Sawyer is resilient, enterprising, and vainglorious, and in a series of adventures along the banks of the Mississippi he usually manages to come out on top. From petty triumphs over his friends and over his long-suffering Aunt Polly, to his intervention in a murder trial, Tom engages readers of all ages. He has long been a defining figure in the American cultural imagination.
Alongside the charm and the excitement, the novel also raises questions about identity, and about attitudes to class and race. Above all, Twain's study of childhood brings into focus emergent notions of individual and literary maturity.

Editorial Review:

An adaptation of Mark Twain's wonderful story set in California's gold-rush days. This is the story that made Angel's Camp, California famous for its annual frog jumping contest. The story relates the hilarious escapades of Jim Smiley who would bet on anything (even if he had to change sides to get the bet going). There is "The Fifteen Minute Nag" (a horse that looked so bad the other horse owners would give her a head start) that could win any race, Andrew Jackson (Smiley's pet dog that could beat any dog until he came across an opponent with no hind legs), and the famous educated jumping frog by the name of Daniel Webster.
