Over the decades, I have read "Journey ..." a few times. Despite the years since it was written, it holds up quite well as a fantasy / Adventure! It is an enjoyable book and I think today's teenagers would like it.

Wow 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book many years ago and still have the book. This is a thought-provoking book, and I can honestly say that it's one of the best books that I have ever read in my whole life. There is much to be thought about in this book, and I intend to reread this book so I can appreciate it all over again. Truly, this book is one of these classics that must be preserved always, for the wonderful writing and lessons contained therein.

Shows its age 3 out of 5 stars.

Unfortunately, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" shows its age. While the story is, actually, quite good, the language is somewhat stilted and the book takes a while to really get going. I think many young readers will be puzzled by the vocabulary and will be bored. Eventually, the story picks up. However, I was bored in the 1950's and cannot imagine that today's youngsters will do much better. I think that the Walt Disney movie is a much better bet if you want to expose your child to a story that was a true classic. This is one of the few cases where a movie has an advantage over the written word.

Editorial Review:

A mission to rid the seas of a monstrous creature becomes a terrifying nightmare when Professor Arronax, Conseil and Ned Land are thrown overboard. The huge marine animal which has haunted the water is no living beast, but a spectacular man-made vessel, and the three men find themselves the helpless prisoners of Captain Nemo. Resigned to their fate, they begin a miraculous journey on the submarine ship which can travel through waters never before explored. For the Professor, at least, this voyage is one he would not have missed for the world.

Editorial Review:

What a stunning discovery: an old, coded note that actually contains directions for reaching the Earth’s very core! And once he finds it, renowned geologist Professor Liedenbrock can’t resist setting out with his 16-year-old nephew to go where only one man has gone before. Jules Verne takes young readers on one of the most incredible journeys ever imagined, from Iceland’s frozen tundra far down into fantastic underground prehistoric worlds and back up again through the fires of an erupting volcano.

I'm a dissapointed ten year old rating this book. Up until the end it
Was probably one of the best books I've ever read. It was full of adventure and excitement, but then I got to the end. The book did not live up to it's name. It would be more appropriately called "Journey Almost to the Centre of the Earth. I recommend this book only to people who like major dissapointments.

Editorial Review:

In this fully dramatized adaptation of Jules Verne's classic, "Journey to the Center of the Earth," Leonard Nimoy, John de Lancie, and cast members from "Star Trek"(R) feature films and all four TV series take you on an incredible journey. "Journey to the Center of the Earth" is the story of Professor Lindenbrock, his nephew Axel and their quest for the secrets contained at the earth's core. Led by Hans, their Icelandic guide, Lindenbrock and Axel descend deeper into the planet than anyone has ever gone before...but will they make it back to the surface alive? Featuring virtuoso performaces from the entire cast, riveting sound effects and original music, Alien Voices' production of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" is an adventure in sound.

An old fashioned tale that doesn't offend 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Bram Stoker's "Dracula" was first published in 1897, and as one reads this work, it is overwhelmingly apparent that it was written during a time when morals and virtues were held in a much higher regard than they are today.

The book is comprised primarily of various journal entries from six main characters. Two of these main characters are remarkable women, possessed of lofty talent and high moral character. It is when both of these women encounter Count Dracula himself and fall under his poisonous and deathly spell that the remaining main characters in the book--all courageous and gifted and accomplished men--spring to the aid of these women.

I, for one, loved the old fashioned language, the rigid formality and courtesy, and the unyielding respect that the main characters demonstrated in their interactions with one another. Chivalry was certainly not dead in 1897, if one were to use this book as evidence. The graciousness and loyalty that the men in this book showed the women is inspiring, and the moral refinement and sensibilities of the women characters caused me to yearn for an older time, away from the immorality and crudeness apparent in today's society.

I had to smile at one point when reading the book when the two main women characters found themselves out late at night after a frightening experience. They were both in their full-length bedclothes, which apparently covered every part of their bodies but their bare feet. One of the women, not wanting to appear immodest dabbed mud on their bare feet so as not to offend anyone who might see those exposed parts.

This book is filled with suspense and plausibly thrilling episodes. It stands as a wonderful classic of good-natured fright, which proves that tension and drama and expectation may be created in a work of fiction without all of the offending elements of bloody violence, gore, vulgarity, sex, and devilishness thrown into the mix. Its ending is noble, with at least one of the main characters revealing remarkable compassion when she sees the look on Count Dracula's face during the final decisive scene in the book. This book was a pleasant surprise, as I wasn't suspecting a work of such high literary value from a "horror" novel. Thus, I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", by Jules Verne, was published in 1869. A mysterious sea monster is attacking shipping, and Arronax, a scientist, joins an expedition to find and destroy the monster. Instead, he becomes a prisoner of proud and ruthless Captain Nemo, captain of the amazing submarine, The Nautilus. This title is part of a wonderful series that offers a quick way into a range of exciting stories. Fast-moving and accessible, each story is a shortened, dramatically illustrated version of the classic novel, which loses none of the strength and flavour of the original. This ELT edition of the series is available for the first time with an accompanying audio CD and has a full glossary at the back of the book. Comprehension, vocabulary and language activities are available on the website. It is intended for Upper Intermediate CEF B2 ALTE Level 3.

Good Read, But Long Read 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I thought that the book had one of the best plot lines I've ever seen, reguardless of the fact that there is only slight building up to the climax. The only thing that I didn't think was that good about the book was that about every other page, Jules Verne would go into a paragraph description of the animals. For example, he would say something like: I just saw a tuna. But not the normal tuna, it was yellow-bellied, had dorsal fins that went at a downward angle, etc." Otherwise, I thought it was a great read and well worth the money. I will be purchasing more of Jules Verne's books very soon. I highly suggest for you to read this book. Another thing, if you enjoyed watching the 1954 "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Film," I highly suggest the book because the movie only gives a small picture of what actually occurred during their submarine venture and the book tells you everything, and the occurrences are just amazing.

Editorial Review:

Originally published in 1870, Verne’s amazing undersea adventure is one of the earliest science fiction novels ever written. Since that time, generations of readers have plunged below the ocean’s waves with Captain Nemo and his first-ever submarine, The Nautilus. It’s a voyage of exploration and the imagination.

A Grand Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

Note: Some immature Mormon has been slamming my reviews because I wrote some negative reviews of books attempting to defend the Book of Mormon.

So your "helpful" votes are greatly appreciated. Thanks

In my opinion, a short review is best if you haven't read the book. I always read the longer reviews afterwards.

I read this book forty years ago in college and loved it. I also saw the movie, but as one reviewer pointed out, Phileas Fogg traveled by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but never by balloon. The balloon scene was added to the movie.

Nevertheless, I loved all of Jules Verne's stories, and I highly recommend this one, whose title says it all--"Around the World in Eighty Days" on a bet that it couldn't be done.

I enjoy collecting paperback books with neat covers, and I have a couple of "Around the World in Eighty Days."

Oh, and I hope this is helpful. Read "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg," by Philip Jose Farmer. This retelling of Verne's story has Fogg going after Captain Nemo. It's great Fun. Farmer also wrote novels about Tarzan and the "Barnstormer in Oz"--very sexy.

Around the world in 80 day , can it be done? 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In 1872 just going around the world was a difficult task never mind in 80 days. The main character, Phileas Fogg bets a couple of his rich buddies half his fortune that he can make it around the world in 80 days. Not long after that he is on his way. His journey starts off flawlessly, without a hitch, but not too far into the book he starts to run into trouble. A detective by the name of Fix believes that it was Mr.Fogg who robbed the bank of England and will stop at nothing to catch him so he follows them all around the world. Theses characters never take a break they're always on the move going from place to place. After many obstacles got in their way such as their train running out of tracks, being attacked by Indians, saving a princess from her death they returned to England. But it was too late. This book has a surprising twist but I will let you read it for your self to find out what it is.

I found this book very noteworthy. The chapter headings are very unique and will hook you in to the rest of the story. I found the chapters in this book to be quick and to the point so you won't get bored with them easily. There is more action and adventure with every turn of the page, which keeps the reader absorbed into the book. This is a great book if you want to take a break from emotional reading, so if you are looking for an emotional type of book this isn't for you. Vocabulary in this book enhances the reading and gives the book character. I find the author, Jules Verne; voice really comes through in this book. The only down side I found in this book was the loose ends. I found myself asking the same question at the end as I did in the beginning.

This book was written more for young adults and older. It's just as good for a fifteen year old as it is a fifty year old. Around the World in 80 Days isn't a hard read. The vocabulary may be complex and unique, but the meaning is still easy to make out. This book is one you read strictly for pleasure. If you are forced to read it will take the fun and interest out of the book. In this novel there are no futuristic gadgets like in other Jules Verne books but it is in keeping with his normal writing style. No one can absolutely hate this book it's to enjoyable of a book to even dislike. In you're a fan of historical fiction thins is a book for you. Even if you're not big on history anyone can find interest in this book. That is why I give it four stars, two thumbs up; on a scale from one to ten, I give it a nine.

Editorial Review:

Jules Verne’s career as a novelist began in 1863, when he struck a new vein in fiction—stories that combined popular science and exploration. In Around the World in Eighty Days, Phileas Fogg rashly bets his companions £20,000 that he can travel around the entire globe in just eighty days—and he is determined not to lose. Breaking the well-established routine of his daily life, the reserved Englishman immediately sets off for Dover, accompanied by his hot- blooded French manservant, Passepartout. Traveling by train, steamship, sailboat, sledge, and even elephant, they must overcome storms, kidnappings, natural disasters, Sioux attacks, and the dogged Inspector Fix of Scotland Yard to win the extraordinary wager. Combining exploration, adventure, and a thrilling race against time, Around the World in Eighty Days gripped audiences upon its publication and remains hugely popular to this day.

An Obsolete Translation--Barnes&Noble ISBN:0760765197 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This translation, one of the Barnes and Noble "Classics Editions", is the 1874 English translation by Edward Roth, a Philadelphia school-teacher. In no sense a translation, it is more a parody or retelling of the French original with many embelishments and additions by the author. The editor is Aaron Parett, an English professor from Montana. In an appendix the editor mentions that for furthur reading one might try the complete translation by Walter James Miller, "The Annotated Jules Verne: From the Earth to the Moon" published by Crowell: 1978 and reprinted by Gramercy: 1995. (In reading reviews, make sure the review applies to this ISBN: 07060765197)

Editorial Review:

Verne's 1865 tale of a trip to the moon is (as you'd expect from Verne) great fun, even if bits of it now seem, in retrospect, a little strange. Our rocket ship gets shot out of a cannon? To the moon? Goodness!

But in other ways it's full of eerie bits of business that turned out to be very near reality: he had the cost, when you adjust for inflation, almost exactly right. There are other similarities, too. Verne's cannon was named the Columbiad; the Apollo 11 command module was named Columbia. Apollo 11 had a three-person crew, just as Verne's did; and both blasted off from the American state of Florida. Even the return to earth happened in more-or-less the same place.

Coincidence -- or fact!? We say you'll have to read this story yourself to judge.

Fogg and Passpartoit's Excellent Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Fogg and Passpartout's Excellent Adventure
Around the world in 80 Days by Jules Verne is an adventure book that starts out slowly, but the pace gets faster as you read on. The characters have to get past the bandits. The bandits are Indian people who are like a gang and who have the character, Aouda, in a hut. Fogg and Passpartout want to save the woman. They save Aouda while she is sleeping. When she wakes up she is on a train with Fogg. Fogg and Passpartout were not expecting her to come on the adventure. Now the three instead of two saw all kinds of things, in different parts of the world. They traveled on boats and trains. Their travels took them to India, China, and the United States. Fogg and Passpartout need to get to London in 80 days so Fogg can win a bet. If Fogg wins the bet he can keep his money and pride. He will also prove that he was not the robber and not have to go to jail. During the trip Passpartout went on errands for Fogg so they would have proof that they went on their trip around the world.

Some one who likes to read adventure books would enjoy this book.
