The Many Faces Of Courage 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As Maya Angelou has said "One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential." If you agree with this philosophy, then you realize that courage, as character, must be fostered and developed.

Bernard Waber's book works so well because it shows young readers the many faces of courage. There are the obvious kinds -firefighters entering a burning building, mountain climbers scaling the heights - involving people and actions which youngsters find heroic, larger than life-size. But children will realize, thanks to this insightful book, that ordinary, everday actions also require courage, whether it's breaking bad habits, holding on to your dreams, or being the first to apologize after an argument. Even acts of common courtesy may display courage in action.

This book encourages youngsters to go on in the face of adversity and feel good about themselves for doing so. It should serve as an excellent starting point for parents to discuss this important topic with their children.

[...]

To paraphrase Maya Angelou once more, "Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest."

Those who read Courage will undoubtedly agree.

Editorial Review:

What is courage? Certainly it takes courage for a firefighter to rescue someone trapped in a burning building, but there are many other kinds of courage too. Everyday kinds that normal, ordinary people exhibit all the time, like "being the first to make up after an argument," or "going to bed without a nightlight." Bernard Waber explores the many varied kinds of courage and celebrates the moments, big and small, that bring out the hero in each of us.

great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I just purchased this title for my 4 year old daughter, and she (and I) really love it!!! The title of the book doesn't really grab you but it's a sweet story about how the neighbor Mr Grumps really doesn't like Lyle, has him banished to the zoo, and then Lyle ends up saving Mr Grumps. I really like the characters in this series because they remind me of real life people that your kids will have to deal with at some point or another. My daughter was totally engaged.

A Book to Remember 5 out of 5 stars.

I am now 21 years old and I can still remember the opening line to this tape. The Lyle books are wonderful for children and this tape is a great way to put your child to sleep. The Lyle books are truly one of my greatest childhood memories!

i love lyle 5 out of 5 stars.

Why do people love this book?? 1 out of 5 stars.

I don't get it. My three-and-a-half-year-old son doesn't like it. It lacks the sweetness and focus of "Corduroy" or "The Snowy Day." It changes scene too often (and not in a good way, like Harold and the Purple Crayon). And the characters are unkind to each other until the very end. I bought this book based on good reviews, but without having read it myself. My mistake. I think this is not a great book for little kids to read, and I won't read it again with my son. Very disappointing.

A cranky neighbor puts Lyle in the zoo but experiences a change of heart when the crocodile saves him from a fire.

A charming children's classic 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I first read Bernard Waber's The House on East 88th Street as a child and was capitivated by Lyle the Crocodile. How I loved this story about a bright green crocodile living in a bathtub in a New York City brownstone.Though frightened at first, the Primm family is won over by their housemate. Lyle is amazing, he takes out the trash, brings in the milk, (this book was first published in 1962!)helps around the house, and loves a nice, hot bath complete with Turkish caviar! (We could all use a Lyle) The story of Lyle does not end here; Waber went on to write seven more titles about this lovable creature. Out of all the Lyle books, this is his best-known. This charming children's classic is suitable for small children between the ages of four and eight.

The magical world of Lyle 5 out of 5 stars.

The story of Lyle the crocodile who is discovered in the bathtub when Joshua and his family move into their new home. My mother first read this book to me when I was four years old. I am now 35! It is a truly wonderful childrens book. One of those that lingers in your memory as a world you inhabited as a child. Myself and my sisters adored the Lyle books and we are now buying them for our families. Endearing, amusing, full of the joys and sadnesses of life. Lyle is a childs world through a crocodiles eyes. Try them all. You and your children (of all ages) will love them!.

Editorial Review:

The first book in the Lyle series, this tells the story of how the Primms found Lyle the crocodile in the bathtub of their new home.

Ghost story climax too scary. 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Not having read the book nor able to check it out from a library, I relied totally on reviewers 5 star comments when deciding to purchase this book. Just about 1/3 the way into the book my parental radar piqued at the conversation between Reggie and Ira concerning ghost stories, "scary, creepy, spooky ghost stories." To my sorrow, no mention or even allusion of this was in any of the reviews.

My youngest 3 children (two 5 year olds and a 7 year old) are from a culture that emphasizes ghosts, the boogie man, evil spirits, etc. in a demonic fashion. Prior to becoming part of our family, ghosts were used as a form of disciplne to terrorize them to comply and obey. Even after having them in our family for a year they still struggle with the memories of these demons. Since the ghost story is the climax in Ira Sleeps Over, I do not recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Ira is thrilled to spend the night at Reggie's, until his sister raises the question of whether he should take his teddy bear.

Editorial Review:

Christmas is an especially festive time for everyone"s favorite crocodile, Lyle. Lyle loves Bird and Loretta the cat, who live with Mr. Grumps. He loves East 88th Street, the house he shares with the Primms and his mother. Lyle"s only problem is that he can"t decide what he wants for Christmas. However, not everyone is filled with holiday cheer. Mr. Grumps has the holiday blahs—so much so that even his adored cat, Loretta, has had it with miserable Mr. Grumps. And then, just a few days before Christmas Loretta disappears and the entire neighborhood joins Mr. Grumps in the hunt for the lost cat. Will he be able to find Loretta before Christmas and restore the holiday cheer to East 88th Street?

A child's world through a crocodile's eyes 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who has ever had a birthday party as a child will be swept back to the excitement, the fears and the adventure of their first parties through the eyes of Lyle the Crocodile. Endearing and touching, any child (or adult) will lose themselves in this book. I write from memory-my mother read the Lyle books to me when I was four years old and they have stayed alive for me ever since. My sisters and myself are now buying them for our families.

Old Time Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Mrs. Primm fears Lyle the crocodile is terribly sick, when in reality he's just "green" over Joshua's birthday party.

I don't recommend this book. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book on my parents' bookshelf, so I happily picked it up to read it to my 3-yr old son. Big mistake. The book could best be described as a period piece that, while charmingly illustrated, goes to lengths to show the inherent cruelty of prejudice. Lyle encounters a girl who hates him and leaves him vicious hate mail. In the end, Lyle saves her life and she grows to understand and love him. My problem with the book is two-fold: First, the hatred she feels for Lyle is way over the top for my son to hear. It's just way too ugly for him to comprehend at this age. Second, I have a problem with the victim having to prove himself to the hater. It seems to me that the victim shouldn't have to redeem himself or prove his worth in any way. The entire premise is that people who are hated need to find a way to be loved and that's just wrong. It's the haters who need to change. The book's lesson is not about tolerance; it's about appeasement.

Editorial Review:

Lyle is distraught to learn he has an enemy and tries to be an even more lovable crocodile than he was before.

One Most Remembered From Childhood -- often recounted! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a child I adored this book and the characters -- I found them so easy to identify with as they would try to work on character flaws such as losing mittens and slouching. The final story gives an important & powerful message in such a simple format that I have never forgotten it. In fact, I have recounted the story to many of my adult friends when they have been down about the trials of life. So now I'm sending it to my friends with kids. I'm certain they will like it as well.

I still love love love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was a little girl, my mother, sister and I would get on the waiting list every 2 weeks at the library for this wonderful book. The stories are sweet, funny and poignant; the illustrations divine. This is Waber's best book. I love it.

We Love Lyle 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is our first (and favorite) Lyle book. It is a cute story, enjoyable for the whole family. Of course, it has a happy ending, and Lyle is the hero. Although it is rather long, my 2 1/2 year old has memorized it, and knows if I miss a word. I highly recommend it. We can't wait to get started with the other Lyle books, and hope that they are as good.

Editorial Review:

When Lyle the Crocodile visits Mr. Primm's advertising office, he has tons of fun and makes lots of friends. He also gets Mr. Primm fired. However, Lyle manages to save Mr. Primm's career when he rescues the boss, Mr. Bigg, from the local haunted house.
