My daughter and I both enjoyed this book. It was great to have further development of Mia's story. No one engages a child's interest like the American Girl!

Editorial Review:

Mia St. Clair has been training all year to master the figure-skating moves she needs to compete at Regionals. But when a family crisis threatens Mia's chances of competing, she's heartbroken. She knows what it means to be a good sport, but will she be able to accept this latest challenge with determination and grace?

Back to the 18th century again! 5 out of 5 stars.

Another outstanding book by one of the best writers of the History Mystery Books published by American Girl about 10-12 years ago. Great to read further adventures about Felicity Merriman, the AG who lived at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Absorbing story that truly helps to understand history in a meaningful way. Also always enjoy a good mystery. Is being read now by my 35 yr old dghtr, who will then read it to my 5 yr old gr dgtr --this book appeals to 3 generations! Wish MY parents were alive to have read it...

This is one mystery you'll find difficult to put down! 5 out of 5 stars.

The year is 1776. Ten-year-old Felicity "Lissie" Merriman is in good spirits at the thought of her eleventh birthday quickly approaching. While she doesn't expect much for her special day, she can't help but admire the gorgeous copy of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS sitting in Widow Reed's storefront. The book is everything that Felicity could ever want; and she and her best friend, Elizabeth Cole, can't help but stop by the print shop every day just to admire the handiwork displayed in this lovely piece of literature. Felicity would do anything to own such a beautiful book. But when terror strikes the town of Williamsburg, Felicity's selfish thoughts go straight out the window.

Over the years, Fiona McLeod has become one of Felicity's dearest friends. As a Scot, however, Fiona's family is at risk of being named a Loyalist; something that Felicity can't understand. But she's forced to come to terms with it immediately when an unknown source, going by the name of Mr. Puller, begins posting broadsides around Williamsburg, falsely accusing Mr. McLeod of just that. Fiona is terrified, and so is Felicity. But even more so when her very own father decides to stand up for Mr. McLeod in court. Of course Felicity wants to help her friend, but she can't help but think that her very own family may become targets or angry mobs if they defend the McLeod's. Felicity's father, however, thinks nothing of it, and declares that he shall assist Mr. McLeod as much as he possibly can. When Felicity's worst nightmare comes true, however, and Father is accused of helping the British, and being a traitor to the Patriots, Felicity knows that she must do something to help her family's name from being dragged through the mud, and save her Father from the cruelty of their so-called friends and neighbors. But to get to the bottom of the case, Felicity must enlist the help of Ben and Elizabeth, and locate the mysterious Mr. Puller; otherwise her father could be put to trial under false pretenses.

When I was growing up, I more often chose to read the Kirsten and Samantha stories. However, since delving into Elizabeth McDavid Jones' PERIL AT KING'S CREEK, Felicity has earned a soft spot in my heart. And now, as she makes a mysterious return in TRAITOR IN WILLIAMSBURG, I am quickly finding myself drawn more and more to her character, and the era she was from. As with PERIL AT KING'S CREEK, McDavid Jones has, once more, penned a tale that is mysterious, and a little spine-tingling. Felicity is spirited and spunky from the get-go. Her loyalty to her friends and family is admirable; while the bravery she displays at every turn of the tale paints her as a heroine you can't help but adore. The facts about printing presses and newspapers that McDavid Jones sprinkles throughout the story are interesting; while the detective work conducted by Felicity, along with Elizabeth, Ben, and Walter leaves the reader on the edge of their seat. This is one mystery you'll find difficult to put down!

Long but interesting 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When I first got this book I expected bamboo, chopsticks, honorable monks and all that other stereotype Chinese stuff. But I saw that life in sixth century China was not that way. The Chinese were beyond bamboo but the Hsien people to the south weren't. The Hsien who lived in Southern China at the time lived a peaceful life in the forests until the jealous Dog Heads (who I think were from India or Vietnam) came and the Chinese help them. The Hsien send their Princess Red Bird to become a liasion and makes a clever plan to defeat the Dog Head Elephants. This Clever Book-loving Princess records in Five Scrolls her life living with her Father the king and then later her brother King Little Tiger who was a royal pain like this other Chinese rich colonist girl who ends up living with Red Bird. But I think lot's of kids who love books can relate to Princess Red Bird. I hope you like it as much as I have.

Editorial Review:

The Royal Diaries proudly presents two-time Newbery Honor author Laurence Yep, whose stunning diary of sixteen-year-old Lady of Ch¹iao Kuo takes readers on a remarkable adventure to Southern China in the sixth century A.D., where Ch¹iao Kuo, a born leader called Red Bird, is courageous and keenly intelligent.

A Chinese fairy tale story. 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

An excellent book on Chinese fairy tales about a Prince/Dragon and a poor, but skilled and beautiful peasant girl. It contains exquisite illustrations that captured my preschool and grade school daughters attention. I highly recommend this fantasy book for preschoolers, through grades three. The reading level and some content (reasoning) for older grades. Recommended for students, teachers, and parents.

The Dragon Prince Review 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a prince who can turn into animals and a farmer who had 7 daughters. The third sister is the evil and greedy one and the seventh sister the youngest daughter, was the prettiest. If it wasn't for her weaving fine shoes the family would have died. In the story the prince is trying to find a wife. So he searched everywhere for one.
If you like Beauty And The Beast you will like this book because this is the same only that it is the Chinese version. They also have the same theme which is don't judge a book by its cover. I know this is the message because in both stories they disguise themselves and they are really are princes
This is an awesome book. I recommend it to young readers for it has excitement, romance, adventure, and more. So pick it up at your local library or buy it at a book store. Hope you enjoy.

Editorial Review:

When a poor farmer falls into the clutches of a dragon, only Seven, his youngest daughter, will save him—by marrying the beast.
Publishers Weekly praised "Yep's elegant, carefully crafted storytelling" and Mak's "skillfully and radiantly rendered illustrations" in this captivating and luminous Chinese variation of the beauty and the beast tale.

Oraib's Review - A Page Turner 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dragon's Gate was an interesting read. The characters came to life, and the situations brought upon a reality which no one could have possibly imagined to be real. I loved the descriptive language that was used throughout the story. It made things look real through the perspective of another person. In a way, it gave me a better feel of the atmosphere and setting. The characters itself were charming yet original or life-like. I say this because we often feel that the characters in most stories are too non-realistic and we don't often find similarities between us and the characters. The characters in Dragon's Gate allowed most of the readers to learn from a more realistic perspective and feeling which also gave room to finding similarities and familiar emotions we often face in every day life. For example, in reality, how would we feel about sacrificing our lives to save others? I for one, must say that the very thought scares me yet at the same time we feel we must. This book makes you ponder how you value yourself, and as you read through the enchanting pages you find yourself asking, "Did I do the same thing when I was put in this situation?" or, "Is this what you really do?" and so forth. You may also find that as you read the book, your feelings unwind and you find yourself bound to the characters themselves.
I would personally recommend this book to ages 12 and above. I believe that it's both enriching and informative and will allow them to broaden their minds while receiving a general knowledge and understanding in return.

In 1867, Otter travels from Three Willows Village in China to California -- the Land of the Golden Mountain. There he will join his father and uncle.

In spite of the presence of family, Otter is a stranger among the other Chinese in this new land. And where he expected to see a land of goldfields, he sees only vast, cold whiteness. But Otter's dream is to learn all he can, take the technology back to the Middle Kingdom, and free China from the Manchu invaders.

Otter and the others board a machine that will change his life -- a train for which he would open the Dragon's Gate.

Did you want to go to America?
Pop: Sure. I didn't have a choice. My father said I had to go. So I went.

Were you sad when you left your village?
Pop: Maybe a little . . . well, maybe a lot.

Ten-year-old Gim Lew Yep knows that he must leave his home in China and travel to America with the father who is a stranger to him. Gim Lew doesn't want to leave behind everything that he's ever known. But he is even more scared of disappointing his father. He uses his left hand, rather than the "correct" right hand; he stutters; and most of all, he worries about not passing the strict immigration test administered at Angel Island.

The Dragon's Child is a touching portrait of a father and son and their unforgettable journey from China to the land of the Golden Mountain. It is based on actual conversations between two-time Newbery Honor author Laurence Yep and his father and on research on his family's immigration history by his niece, Dr. Kathleen S. Yep.

ribbons- a book that on the surface seems simple. a gifted young dancer, robin, must stop dancing because of money problems, which are caused by her grandmother. some people may say this is a grandmother-grandaughter story but it isn't at all. it is another way to show injustice and tragedy. this book made me cry from the unfairness of it all, and the amazing thing about this book is this: whereas most sad books are entirely realistic, this one could happen very easily. the reality of it, and the robin's brave, bright, innocent hope in the midst of true sadness is what makes you cry. for while she is deeply upset with her mother and grandmother for reasons very justified, she sill loves, respects, and obeys them. this might confuse some readers, or make them angry, but for me...while i thought that i would never put up with that, yep somehow managed to put all the pain and suffering into words, and thats what makes you cry- the emotion that comes through. you must read this...while it is a tear-jerker, it somehow leaves you with a good feeling, and a sense o resolve.

Editorial Review:

Ballet means everything to Robin Lee. But when her parents, who have brought Robin's grandmother from Hong Kong to America to live with them, can no longer afford her lessons, she is determined not to give up her dream even amidst family conflict. An exciting story that will appeal to children ages 8-12 4 out of 5 stars.

Chin and his father, Ah Sing, live in Chinatown with thousands of other Chinese immigrants. Ah Sing is a houseboy for Mr. Travis, a well-to-do banker who lives in a very nice San Francisco neighborhood with his wife and son, Henry. Henry and Chin are good friends; Henry shares his comic books with Chin, who is using them to learn how to read. Henry's parents and Ah Sing don't approve of the comic books their boys find so interesting.

Henry's dog, Sawyer, is very upset. He's whimpering and afraid, sensing that something is terribly wrong. Even the chickens in Ah Quon's butcher shop are skittish and frightened. What could be scaring the animals?

Over one-third of a million people are sleeping or just waking up around 5 A.M. on April 18, 1906 in the San Francisco area when the earthquake begins. Author Laurence Yep describes what it's like: "It is as if more than 18 million sticks of dynamite explode beneath them. That is more force than the atom bomb that struck Hiroshima."

At the Travis house Sawyer begins to howl. Henry hears a low rumble, then his books bounce off their shelves. Plaster drops off the walls and windows shatter. The house across the street falls apart.

Over in Chinatown the floor in Ah Sing's little apartment actually rolls under his feet. Boxes fall. Possessions are scattered everywhere. Windows shatter, and walls crack and crumble. Then the ceiling falls.

Imagine the chaos and destruction as houses tumble like flimsy paper cards. Water mains break. Thousands of people are trapped under falling rubble --- bricks, wood and plaster. Cable-car tracks are twisted and contorted. Fires are breaking out and spreading rapidly because there aren't enough firemen to fight that many fires. Those who are able to are helping rescue people, pets and a few belongings. Everyone is desperately trying to find a safe place.

This disaster is bringing out the best in most people, but also the worst as some folks are charging outrageous prices for the few supplies and what little transportation is available.

Henry and Chin's families experience many hazards and great uncertainty, but they do survive the earthquake and the fires. Both Henry and Chin are very proud of their fathers for the way they overcame the hardships and kept their families safe during the disaster.

Over the years the earth has moved many times under San Francisco. But it has been thirty-eight years since the last strong earthquake. People have forgotten how bad it can be. But soon they will remember.

Based on actual events of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and told from the alternating perspectives of two young friends, the earth dragon awakes chronicles the thrilling story of the destruction of a city, and the heroes that emerge in its wake.
