terrified mother 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 22 people found this review helpful.

The story goes beyond bad. This is a story of three little girls that torture and kill the wolf in a premeditated way. My 4 year-old son was very sad after someone read the story to him in a school interview to preschool. He said to me that it was a bad story, and the girls have done "bad choices". I can't believe this is in the list of books recommended for 4 and 5's.

Lon Po Po 4 out of 5 stars.

Title- Lon Po Po A Red-Riding Hood Story From China
Author- Ed Young
Do you recommend this book? Yes because it is great.

The book was so good. It's about a wolf and 3 girls. The 3 girls were very scared because of the wolf so they had to figure out how to get rid of the wolf. So they decided to climb up a tree and get a rope with a basket and hang it down and the wolf got on it then they put the rope over on the other side and let go of it and the wolf fell and hit his head the wolf tried this a couple more times until the last time when he broke his heart so he went away forever.

Editorial Review:

Three little girls spare no mercy to Lon Po Po, the granny wolf, in this version of Little Red Riding Hood where they tempt her up a tree and over a limb, to her death. The girls' frightened eyes are juxtaposed against Lon Po Po's menacing squint and whirling blue costume in one of the books numerous three-picture sequences, which resemble the decorative panels of Chinese tradition. Through mixing abstract and realistic images with complex use of color and shadow, artist and translator Young has transformed a simple fairy tail into a remarkable work of art and earned the 1990 Caldecott Medal in doing so.

This book is great for both of my kids and also as an introduction to mothers in Bible Study. I love it.

Excellent book for young children 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a beautiful book. I bought it for my children, who enjoyed it immensely. I also used it in a classroom of first graders. They were delighted with the book, and we all had fun with the illustrations and the story. I think it is a wonderful book, with beautiful illustrations and a great story.

7 Blind Mice 5 out of 5 stars.

Ed Young brings simple truths to preschoolders and young children as he retells a favorite story about the Blind Man and the Elephant using 7 blind mice to show that each point of view, just like all the colors of the rainbow, come together to make the "whole" of the elephant and also equals white light, which is what all colors of the rainbow equal. Many teaching moments such as primary colors equal white when combined and looking at things from many points of view brings about a different understanding, can be shared with children as they are able to understand. Enjoy the simple story or the depths of the wonderful ideals illustrated simply and beautifully.

Editorial Review:

"It's a pillar," says one. "It's a fan," says another. One by one, the seven blind mice investigate the strange Something by the pond. And one by one, they come back with a different theory. It's only when the seventh mouse goes out-and explores the whole Something-that the mice see the whole truth. Based on a classic Indian tale, Ed Young's beautifully rendered version is a treasure to enjoy again and again.

"Immensely appealing." (The Horn Book, starred review)

A must have! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a future teacher, I am always looking for books that will be both enjoyable and educational. This is a great book for social studies concepts in younger grades (K-2) and excellent for elements of literature in older grades (3+). The message is one that children can never hear enough: You have gifts that should not be neglected!

Favorite Read Aloud 5 out of 5 stars.

I Wish I Were a Butterfly is one of my favorite books to share with children. The lesson is one that can never be taught too often. The illustrations are art quality and captivating. It is the perfect book to carry into most classrooms as a "guest" reader. Few children have experienced this book, but I've never read it to a class (or child) that did not enjoy it.

Life's most important lesson 5 out of 5 stars.

The beautiful lesson of this tale is that each of us is unique with talents and gifts that enrich others' lives. The poor little cricket in the story is unhappy because he has been told he is ugly. He wishes he were a beautiful butterfly. Little does he know that by the end of the story, it is the beautiful butterfly who will be admiring him for the lovely music he can make!
I have an autistic son, and this book is an absolute treasure to me. Every child - every person, really - should be nurtured to understand the lesson of this story: that he or she is special and wonderful just the way he or she is!

Editorial Review:

A wise spider helps a despondent cricket realize that he is special in his own way.

CLEAR, CONCISE AND DELIGHTFUL TALE 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I found this Ed Young retelling of the traditional folktale quite simply a delight. The pictures are soft and have a mystical quality. The text is simple and concise on each page and the tale has a humor and lesson that even first graders will appreciate. The addition of the puppets is sure to delight those children who like to pursue a story farther than a shared reading with Teacher and class.

Good story and sweeping artwork 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Efficient text, coupled with sweeping illustrations, saturate this Chinese tale of happenstance and fortuosity. Sai is a wise man living in Northern China. Having few possessions, he takes things as they happen, for better or for worse. When his valued horse gets lost, he believes it may not be a bad thing; the horse then returns with a mare. Sai finds harmony in taking the bad with the good.

Young's artwork is portrayed in subdued oils that radiate with a chalk-like appearance. Soft hues fade into another, giving an impressionistic view of the Gobi Desert. The art is often too relaxed at times; on a few pages, the texture of the canvas is plainly visible. However, tinges of life in China hundreds of years ago take form for an indelible rendering. Display this recommended book with other Chinese folk tale picture books during Chinese New Year. Although targeted for 4-6 year olds, children up to age 8 will also enjoy this book.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed author-illustrator Ed Young breathes new life into the ancient Chinese folktale of a horse that brings extraordinary reversals of fortune to its trusting owner.

A timeless fable, The Lost Horse teaches of the ever-changing fortunes of life.

Rev. Marie of Rebeccasreads highly recommends BEYOND THE GREAT MOUNTAIN as Caldecott Medal winner author & artist Ed Young offers a book that will enchant adults & children alike as it transports you on a journey of words & art, to a strange & wondrous land far, far way in both time & place.

Unique & very different fare for parents & children.

An intro of art and a new language to children 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The design of the book is extremely creative and artistic. The pictorial language of Chinese, besides its beauty, is thought provoking. It makes children think with imagination and ask to learn more. When a book stimulates curiosity, it translates to search for knowledge, and results in growth. It's a wonderful thing.

Editorial Review:

Ed Young's spare prose, as lovely as a rice-paper painting, describes in measured detail the beautiful and mystical land that the author so clearly loves. The unique format and gorgeous paper-collage illustrations, highlighted with Chinese characters, combine to convey the many facets of China to form a poetic picture of the land s grace, depth, and majesty.

Great book for adoptive families 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughters are also sisters through adoption, and this book doesn't miss a beat showing how families formed though adoption are every bit as natural and connected as those formed through birth. And the illustrations are gorgeous! I highly recommend this book for children ages 3 and up and their families.

Editorial Review:

More than anything else in the world, Antonia wants a Mei Mei, little sister, to call her own. But when she and her mother and father fly all the way to China to get her little sister and Antonia finally meets her, she is not at all like Antonia imagined her: She can’t walk. She can’t talk. She just cries and steals attention. But is her Mei Mei all that bad? This charming personal story from Ed Young follows a little girl as she learns what being a big sister is all about, and discovers the real meaning of family.

Editorial Review:

Growing up at the foot of Mount Everest, a Sherpa boy named Tenzing Norgay dreamed about one day being the first to climb the giant in his backyard. For years he practiced, carrying loads of rocks in his backpack to grow stronger, prowling the mountain's lower levels; later, carrying loads of equipment for other adventurers, but always, always, wanting to climb himself.

But his dream never seemed possible until he met Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand beekeeper who shared Tenzing's dream. By working together every step of the way, two men from entirely different backgrounds climbed into the clouds, to the peak of Mount Everest. However, as the years passed, only Hilary's name lived on in the history books while, in the west, Norgay's was mostly forgotten.

In Tiger of the Snows, Robert Burleigh introduces young readers to one of the Far East's greatest heroes and tells the long-neglected story of a litle boy with an unimaginable dream, who refused to be daunted by the world's most daunting mountain, and who came to be known as the tiger of the snows. Caldecott winner Ed Young brings Everest to life with hauntingly, subtly beautiful animal imageries and resplendent colors, capturing the breathtaking grandeur and life force of the mountain the Nepalese call Mother Goddess of the Earth.

Voices of the Heart by Ed Young 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

What a lovely, useful book. Our fast paced times don't offer us the leisure to consider the meaning of our emotions and how they inform every moment of our lives. Emotions are like a roller coaster ride we are locked into and we feel powerless. When the old Chinese were inventing their writing, they noticed how activities & places evoked feelings & they began to draw the words like pictures as a remembrance. Feelings emerge from somewhere in the middle of our physical selves, & "sorrow" does feel like "opposites," a face off in ourselves. "When the heart is ruled by feelings that oppose each other" is insightful. If we are more aware and have the capacity to define feelings like sorrow that converge on us in a moment, maybe we could begin to have a better degree of balanced in life. I can only say this is most helpful to me. This book is absolutely wonderful & more than anything else, useful in meaningful ways for all ages of people.

Editorial Review:

In this deeply personal book, Ed Young explores twenty-six Chinese characters, each describing a feeling or emotion, and each containing the symbol for the heart.

Through stunning collage art that interprets the visual elements within each character, Young uncovers layers of meanings for words such as joy and sorrow, respect and rudeness. He invites readers to probe the full range of their own emotions and he gives a context for discussing ethics and the similarities between old and new, East and West.

It's a book for those who love the beauty of language and the beauty of the heart.

Zen for the read-to-me kid 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Hasely retells a classic story - one that looks a bit beyond the effortless ease of a master, to see understand the long discipline and effort from which effortlessness arises. It runs somewhat against the self-esteemist grain of the "everybody's a star" philosophy so prevalent in grade-school teaching these days. That's a good thing, I think; not all efforts have equal results, and not all gratifications are immediate.

Young's illustrations carry the story well, even if his style seems less than memorable. He builds his imagery up from collages of patterned papers, with details that seem to be added in colored pencil.

The story has been one of my favorites for many years, even if the details of this version are new to me. This children's rendering comes across well, even if I haven't kid-tested it yet, with its quiet lessons in skill, patience, and even a little bravery.

Editorial Review:

A SIMPLE STORY LAYERED WITH MEANING; stunning layered artwork by an acknowledged master.

A wealthy Chinese man dreamt of a painting of his favorite horse. He sought out a man named Homan, known as a great painter of horses and commissioned the portrait. Then he waited…and waited…and waited. As the years passed, his hair grew gray, and he grew furious. What was taking so long? Dennis Haseley’s simple story about the nature of art and the value of time is subtly amplified in stunning layered collages by Caldecott medalist Ed-Young.

Dream Catcher by Audrey Osofsky 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a story of a day in the life of the Ojibway Indians of the Great Lakes. The story is based on the baby of the tribe, whoses sister weaves a dreamcatcher. A dreamcatcher is a net, which is used to catch bad dreams, holding on to them until sunrise when they will be destroyed. This net was made for the Ojibway baby who watches its family through the day as they work and play, lulled into a restful slumber by the dreamatcher.

This is a wonderful story of how this tribe treasured their good dreams as a source of wisdom. It is very captivating for young readers to relate to dreams in this manner, also comparing the games that the children of this culture play. This poetic text uses a rhythm to keep the young reader interested. The beautiful pastel illustrations are used in an impressionistic way to keep the reader in that dream-like feelng.

Editorial Review:

The Ojibway Indians wove dream nets--delicate circlets to capture nightmares and let only good dreams through. Osofsky weaves these beliefs into her story of an Ojibway baby long ago, who watches his family as they play and work, and, safe behind the dreamcatcher, drifts contentedly off to sleep. Full color.
